Malware and Other Various Nasties
Hello Everyone
I am looking for some real solid feedback when it comes to the various onslaught on nasty infectious computer viruses , malware , spyware and things such as viruses and key loggers.
Would anyone know of any real solid top notch programs / applications that work very well with a Mac?
Thanks To All !
- Best Regards!
You want the whole nine yards?!
Do not be tricked by 'scareware' that tempts computer users to download fake anti-virus software that may itself be malware.
Fake anti-virus software that infect PCs with malicious code are a growing threat, according to a study by Google. Its analysis of 240m web pages over 13 months showed that fake anti-virus programs accounted for 15% of all malicious software.
Scammers trick people into downloading programs by convincing them that their PC is infected with a virus.
Once installed, the software may steal data or force people to make a payment to register the fake product.
Beware of PDF files from unknown sources. A security firm announced that by its counting, malicious Reader documents made up 80% of all exploits at the end of 2009.:
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9157438/RoguePDFs_account_for_80_of_all_exploits_saysresearcher
No viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions.
It is possible, however, to pass on a Windows virus to another Windows user, for example through an email attachment. To prevent this all you need is the free anti-virus utility ClamXav, which you can download for Tiger and Leopard from (on no account install Norton Anti-Virus on a Mac running OS X):
http://www.clamxav.com/
The new version for Snow Leopard is available here:
http://www.clamxav.com/index.php?page=v2beta
(Note: ClamAV adds a new user group to your Mac. That makes it a little more difficult to remove than some apps. You’ll find an uninstaller link in ClamXav’s FAQ page online.)
However, the appearance of Trojans and other malware that can possibly infect a Mac seems to be growing, but is a completely different issue to viruses.
If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's (that's you!) DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
You can read more about how, for example, the OSX/DNSChanger Trojan works here:
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/trojanosxdnschanger.shtml
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X. It's available here:
http://macscan.securemac.com/
The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X and allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.
(Note that a 30 day trial version of MacScan can be downloaded free of charge from:
http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
and this can perform a complete scan of your entire hard disk. After 30 days free trial the cost is $29.99. The full version permits you to scan selected files and folders only, as well as the entire hard disk. It will detect (and delete if you ask it to) all 'tracker cookies' that switch you to web sites you did not want to go to.)
A white paper has recently been published on the subject of Trojans by SubRosaSoft, available here:
http://www.macforensicslab.com/ProductsAndServices/index.php?mainpage=document_general_info&cPath=11&productsid=174
Also, beware of MacSweeper:
MacSweeper is malware that misleads users by exaggerating reports about spyware, adware or viruses on their computer. It is the first known "rogue" application for the Mac OS X operating system. The software was discovered by F-Secure, a Finland based computer security software company on January 17, 2008
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacSweeper
On June 23, 2008 this news reached Mac users:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/06/23/mac_trojan/
More on Trojans on the Mac here:
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/63574.html?welcome=1214487119
This was published on July 25, 2008:
Attack code that exploits flaws in the net's addressing system are starting to circulate online, say security experts.
The code could be a boon to phishing gangs who redirect web users to fake bank sites and steal login details.
In light of the news net firms are being urged to apply a fix for the loop-hole before attacks by hi-tech criminals become widespread.
Net security groups say there is anecdotal evidence that small scale attacks are already happening.
Further details here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7525206.stm
A further development was the Koobface malware that can be picked up from Facebook (already a notorious site for malware, like many other 'social networking' sites like Twitter etc), as reported here on December 9, 2008:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/technology/newsid_7773000/7773340.stm
You can keep up to date, particularly about malware present in some downloadable pirated software, at the Securemac site:
http://www.securemac.com/
There may be other ways of guarding against Trojans, viruses and general malware affecting the Mac, and alternatives will probably appear in the future. In the meantime the advice is: be careful where you go on the web and what you download!
If you think you may have acquired a Trojan, and you know its name, you can also locate it via the Terminal:
http://theappleblog.com/2009/04/24/mac-botnet-how-to-ensure-you-are-not-part-of- the-problem/
As to the recent 'Conficker furore' affecting Intel-powered computers, MacWorld recently had this to say:
http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?email&NewsID=25613
Although any content that you download has the possibility of containing malicious software, practising a bit of care will generally keep you free from the consequences of anything like the DNSChanger trojan.
1. Avoid going to suspect and untrusted Web sites, especially p'orn'ography sites.
2. Check out what you are downloading. Mac OS X asks you for you administrator password to install applications for a reason! Only download media and applications from well-known and trusted Web sites. If you think you may have downloaded suspicious files, read the installer packages and make sure they are legit. If you cannot determine if the program you downloaded is infected, do a quick Internet search and see if any other users reported issues after installing a particular program. A recent example is of malware distributed through innocent looking free screensavers: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/malware-watch-free-mac-os-x-screensavers-bund led-with-spyware/6560?tag=nl.e589
3. Use an antivirus program like ClamXav. If you are in the habit of downloading a lot of media and other files, it may be well worth your while to run those files through an AV application.
4. Use Mac OS X's built-in Firewalls and other security features.
5. Stop using LimeWire. LimeWire (and other peer-to-peer sharing applications and download torrents) are hotbeds of potential software issues waiting to happen to your Mac. Everything from changing permissions to downloading trojans and other malicious software can be acquired from using these applications. Similar risks apply to using Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube and similar sites which are prone to malicious hacking: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8420233.stm
6. Resist the temptation to download pirated software. After the release of iWork '09 earlier this year, a Trojan was discovered circulating in pirated copies of Apple's productivity suite of applications (as well as pirated copies of Adobe's Photoshop CS4). Security professionals now believe that the botnet (from iServices) has become active. Although the potential damage range is projected to be minimal, an estimated 20,000 copies of the Trojan have been downloaded. SecureMac offer a simple and free tool for the removal of the iBotNet Trojan available here:
http://macscan.securemac.com/files/iServicesTrojanRemovalTool.dmg
Also, there is the potential for having your entire email contact list stolen for use for spamming:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/20/technology/internet/20shortcuts.html?_r=1
NOTE: Snow Leopard, OS 10.6.x, offers additional security to that of previous versions of OS X, but not to the extent that you should ignore the foregoing:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/security/
Apple's 10.6.4 operating system upgrade silently updated the malware protection built into Mac OS X to protect against a backdoor Trojan horse that can allow hackers to gain remote control over your treasured iMac or MacBook.
http://www.sophos.com/blogs/gc/g/2010/06/18/apple-secretly-updates
Finally, do not install Norton Anti-Virus on a Mac as it can seriously damage your operating system. Norton Anti-Virus is not compatible with Apple OS X.

Hi,
i'm a new member of this community. I've recently learn about flashback malware and other threats to Mac devices. I've installed the new Mac OS X update for Lion 10.7, and the flashback removal tool. What about the update for Flash Player? Should i install it? Otherwise, should i permanently remove this app?
I realy need some advice.
Thank's to all.Be sure to install the latest version of Safari (version 5.1.7) which is available via Software Update (in the Apple menu) if you have not already installed it. This update will automatically disable older versions of Flash when new versions are available, and will instruct you on how to install the latest version on your system. This should help keep your system safe from any vulnerabilities in Flash.
Note that this is only useful if you use Safari, though other browsers have their own update mechanisms you should research and enable or configure to your liking. -
Does ipad 3 support adobe flash and other various video formats?
does ipad 3 support adobe flash and other various video formats? Thanks/////!
Flash is not a video format. Flash is a platform that consists of a scripting language, and plug-in or application that presents a canvas and resources to run the scripts. It is possible for Flash to load video and play them in the canvas, but the video itself is a separate resource. Flash became a popular mechanism for video plaback mostly because the plugin was available for multiple browsers and the video codecs that Flash could load were consistent across multiple platforms, which made coding easier. It also made it simpler to add advertising overlays (especially before CSS3), and it was also a popular mechanism to distribute viruses.
In November of 2011, Adobe stopped development of and licensing of the use of Flash on mobile platforms, citing that HTML5 makes the primary uses for Flash obsolete. There is no version of Flash for iOS, or new or future versions of Android.
Adobe further indicated that they will be phasing out Flash plug-in support as well (such as the plugins used in Desktop web browsers), instead aiming to make Flash applications stand-along applications running on the desktop. No time table for that has been set, though they've just recently phased out Linux development. However, Flash is being actively developer for native applications and Adobe makes Flash Builder and AIR that allow you to make native applications for iOS and Android using the Flash development tools.
With regard to video formats... iOS natively supports MPEG-4 and various profiles thereof, and it supports the use of the HTML5 <video> tag to embed video in pages and in applications that leverage the WebKit environment to implement their UI. There are also apps that display other video formats. -
Windows 8.1 wifi not working after sleep (and other various bugs)
Hello Apple support forum, this is my first post!
Alright, so I just switched to my first mac. MBP Retina late '13. I bought it primarily to run windows, and to also of course use OS10.
My issues in bootcamp however are getting annoying. My Wifi shows up as connected after I resume from sleep, but my mac won't let me disable wifi, enable airplane mode and then re-enable wifi, nothing. The only way to get wifi to work when resuming from sleep is to reboot.
I just set hibernate when close lid on all my power modes, and basically disabled sleep for now. Hibernate works fine for now, but sleep is much faster from resume and also I'm not sure if the machine will wake up from a simple tap on the keyboard or opening of the lid, I think I have to actually boot it all over again anyways.
My other minor but still annoying issue is my titles of windows in windows are showing up as black (screenshot here)
the only other thing I was curious about was the dual-gpu functionality. I know from reading these forums it's probably not possible because of the hardware and software mesh apple created for OSX and their dual-gpu design, how it wouldn't really work in windows. I'm just wondering if anyone ever got this to work in windows maybe on the older retina MBP or older macs, or if anyone is making progress on trying to fix that in windows? I bought this laptop expecting that to work, even the geniuses at the Apple store said it would be possible, I was misled and might have second-gussed buying a 3k machine if it would only get a few more hours battery than my old Vaio. I bought this machine primarily for battery life.
I'm just remembering another tiny tiny issue. When I plug headphones in the headphone jack in windows, it doesn't automatically switch to that audio output, I have to manually do it in audio settings, is this a bug, have I configured something incorrectly, and is there a fix?
One other thing is my dpi settings, I have it set to a larger font and everything because at stock it is SOOO tiny. my question is, is there any way to smooth out text in other apps, my browser and apps like rdio look like crap unless I leave the dpi settings stock, which I basically need a magnifying glass to use (I tried that for a week lol. Not the magnifying glass tho haha)
I know I'm rambling at this point, but in the windows 8.1 camera app, sometimes my camera does this bug where it flips between inverted and normal, extremely quickly, so it looks like there are two of me. I don't know if this was GPU drivers tho, because just reinstalled those this morning and it seems to be ok so far.
also, the keyboard. I miss my context menu key, what do I need two command keys for? A right alt button, I'd rather have that be the other control button. Any way to remap these easily? what about switching Fn with control on the left, I prefer my windows button in the exact corner.
last question tho, I saw people overclocking gpu's on their retinas from last year, can you do this on the new retinas, and can you overclock the cpu as well as the gpu?
I do have to say this in the end, I am a little dissapointed with apple, I was told thst my mac would run windows like a native windows machine. I know windows 8.1 is not supported, but coming from PC's for years, and being a PC technician, I also go to school for computer engineering, I expected everything to "just work" as steve jobs once said. Well, it doesn't just work. I even had these issues in windows 8, which is supported.
Installing windows 8 was a nightmare. I had to use the forums, try for weeks to get windows 8 to finally instll the proper (uefi) way, and to get everything usable, I had to reinstall my os's twice.
Apple, if you are going to advertise a mac that can run windows "seamlessly", you need to get these major issues fixed, support all new versions of windows before they are even release, and release proper hardware drivers and support software before new hardware is released. All other Windows OEMS are pretty much required to do this to stay in business. I don't dislike OSX, I just use windows for everything I can't use Mac for, so please fix this. You're better than this, you should put a higher standard on this. otherwise, don't advertise macs that can run windows.
Thanks guys, sorry for the information overload. BTW, MBP Retina 15" 16GB RAM 512 SSD, 2.6 haswell, pretty much the max specs other than the SSD.I have stated every issue I’ve had so far in a fairly clear and concise way. I think if you read what I wrote, it all makes logical sense as to what is going on. Windows 7/8 would work just as well on a Mac if it was supported the same way the OS is for other OEMs.
As I stated earlier in the post, I’m having these same issues in windows 8, not just 8.1, which is the reason for the post. I know the difference between supported by drivers and not supported by the manufacturer. The fact that when Haswell mbp’s came out and no revision to bootcamp for the new hardware was released to fix issues with installing windows on the new hardware shows Apple clearly Is not supporting bootcamp as strongly as they advertise.
I am being realistic on Apple having drivers early. Anyone with an MSDN subscription can download the RELEASE version of windows months ahead of the actual release, I’m 100% sure if any average consumer can do that by paying $100 and saying they are a developer, apple can do it just as easily.
You aren’t much help, you haven’t answered really anything to my post, nor have you contributed any knowledge that wasn’t clearly posted above, so don’t say anything if you don’t have anything to contribute.
By the way, my rant is directed at apple, as you can see because I am saying “Apple, if you are going to…” because this is an Apple forum on Apple’s website. It is not directed to end users, clearly. -
Unsharp text in menu bar and other various places
After upgrading to Yosemite the text and icons of the menu bar is pretty unsharp.
Other text such as on websites and filenames remain sharp. Anyone else experiencing the same issue?
Any way to solve this?
I'm on a 27" late 2009 iMac.The menu bars and filenames have been replaced by the letter "A" surrounded by boxes, over and over!
Perform an Archive & Install of Mac OS X, preserving user and network data, and then reinstall all needed software and updates.

please help!!
I'm with you on the saying goodbye!
I've gone fron having an old BB 9780 which worked perfectly to "upgrading" to a phone that doesnt work for a business user on soooo many levels.
I'm reverting back to the old BB for a couple of months then will look at changing platforms. -

Your new recommended update appears incompatible with my and other's virus protection. How can we be sure we can safely navigate if your security on the older versions of firefox are lifted? It seems that many people are having this problem and have said they will return to Internet Explorer. Please advise as I prefer Firefox but cannot take the chance of malware and other infections. I would appreciate a hasty response.
No, it doesn't affect your anti-virus program, only the silly little extensions that some anti-virus applications install into Firefox that duplicate features which are built into Firefox = anti-phishing & web forgery protection.

Yesterday while on WiFi at an international airport, I suddenly lost content in Safari. A window popup suggested that someone was trying to spoof setup.iCloud. After arriving home to my own network, Safari still was acting strange. Do I need to be concerned with possible malware or other destructive software remaining on my iPad?

I Cannot get my organizer to work for Elements 13. "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program......" is the error I get. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the program and tried various other things based on the MANY other complaints with this same issue and nothing is working. How can this problem be corrected?
Hi,
Which operating system are you running on?
Are you upgrading from a previous version of Photoshop elements or is this your first?
Are you trying to load the organizer or the editor or do both fail?

I am running OS X Version 10.9.5 on n iMac I brought in 2011. Had a virus or malware attack the other night and a window opened with a # to call for help. Didn't know if I should trust the # but ended up calling it anyway and paid to have them 'fix' things. Was told I didn't have firewall protection. Am not sure if I do now. [It still says to allow all incoming connections]. So what do I do now? And what kind of antivirus program is recommended?
FirewallRead "Ransomware" web pages.
Assuming you let the scam outfit remotely control your Mac, the information on it can no longer be considered secure. Neither can the Mac itself. You should immediately shut it down and take actions to prevent or recover from identity theft, which is quite likely to have occurred. This means contacting the financial institutions and other companies that may permit access to your accounts using login names and passwords, canceling and replacing credit cards, and similar actions that only you can know.
Determine if you can contest the charge made to your credit card for this criminal transgression.
And what kind of antivirus program is recommended?
None. The Mac is highly secure against malware or virus intrusion, but nothing can prevent you from willfully installing dubious software or granting remote access to criminals. No "anti-virus" software in the world will protect you from that. The OS X application firewall is not intended to prevent this sort of occurrence. -
Hi. Firefox 22 on my PC is not allowing uploads and other functions.
Hi
I have uploaded Firefox 22 on my laptop but in various websites; i.e., shipspotting.com, You Tube, My Yahoo, etc. I am unable to utilize the upload functions on those websites and the bookmarks function is not working properly in the My Yahoo website.
When I got into Safe Mode, I could utilize the upload functions for shipspotting and You Tube; but, when I rebooted to regular mode the old problem returned and uploading photos, videos, etc. was not possible.
Any suggestions to correct this problem?
I have the same problem with Chrome and Internet explorer browsers.Could you clarify your original reference to Safe Mode -- did you mean Windows Safe Mode or Firefox's Safe Mode?
In case a recent software installation introduced some malware or other undesirable software to your system, you may want to run some supplemental scans. These three tools are highly regarded (and free):
* Malwarebytes Anti-malware : http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
* SUPERAntiSpyware : http://www.superantispyware.com/
* AdwCleaner : http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ ''(ignore banner ads for other products)''
When multiple browsers display the same issue, a likely culprit is a filter or system-level setting. Things to investigate include:
* Add-ons you use in all browsers that could change how sites respond, e.g., privacy filters or cookie blockers. To check in Firefox, disable all nonessential extensions on this tab and then restart Firefox using one of the links provided there:<br><br>orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
* Internet Explorer connection settings: do you use a proxy or filtering or anonymizing service?
* Security, privacy, or filtering software: are some sites completely blocked? does the software block cookies or "referer" information? are "third party" sites or cookies blocked (this can wreck sites that split their content over multiple servers)?
* Parental control software: programs like BlueCoat K9 sometimes need to be updated when sites split their content between multiple servers.
* Windows hosts file: sometimes a server is blocked in this file by malware (blocking good sites) or by suggestions for ad blocking. -
Convert smart quotes and other high ascii characters to HTML
I'd like to set up Dreamweaver CS4 Mac to automatically convert smart quotes and other high ASCII characters (m-dashes, accent marks, etc.) pasted from MS Word into HTML code. Dreamweaver 8 used to do this by default, but I can't find a way to set up a similar auto-conversion in CS 4. Is this possible? If not, it really should be a preference option. I code a lot of HTML emails and it is very time consuming to convert every curly quote and dash.
Thanks,
Robert
Digital ArtsI too am having a related problem with Dreamweaver CS5 (running under Windows XP), having just upgraded from CS4 (which works fine for me) this week.
In my case, I like to convert to typographic quotes etc. in my text editor, where I can use macros I've written to speed the conversion process. So my preferred method is to key in typographic letters & symbols by hand (using ALT + ASCII key codes typed in on the numeric keypad) in my text editor, and then I copy and paste my *plain* ASCII text (no formatting other than line feeds & carriage returns) into DW's DESIGN view. DW displays my high-ASCII characters just fine in DESIGN view, and writes the proper HTML code for the character into the source code (which is where I mostly work in DW).
I've been doing it this way for years (first with GoLive, and then with DW CS4) and never encountered any problems until this week, when I upgraded to DW CS5.
But the problem I'm having may be somewhat different than what others have complained of here.
In my case, some high-ASCII (above 128) characters convert to HTML just fine, while others do not.
E.g., en and em dashes in my cut-and-paste text show as such in DESIGN mode, and the right entries
–
—
turn up in the source code. Same is true for the ampersand
&
and the copyright symbol
©
and for such foreign letters as the e with acute accent (ALT+0233)
é
What does NOT display or code correctly are the typographic quotes. E.g., when I paste in (or special paste; it doesn't seem to make any difference which I use for this) text with typographic double quotes (ALT+0147 for open quote mark and ALT+0148 for close quote mark), which should appear in source code as
“[...]”
DW strips out the ASCII encoding, displaying the inch marks in DESIGN mode, and putting this
"[...]"
in my source code.
The typographic apostrophe (ALT+0146) is treated differently still. The text I copy & paste into DW should appear as
[...]’[...]
in the source code, but instead I get the foot mark (both in DESIGN and CODE views):
I've tried adjusting the various DW settings for "encoding"
MODIFY > PAGE PROPERTIES > TITLE/ENCODING > Encoding:

but switching from "Unicode (UTF-8)" to "Western European" hasn't solved the problem (probably because in my case many of the higher ASCII characters convert just fine). So I don't think it's the encoding scheme I use that's the problem.
Whatever the problem is, it's caused me enough headaches and time lost troubleshooting that I'm planning to revert to CS4 as soon as I post this.

Failed Hardware Scan and other issues E440
Hi all,
This is probably more rant than anything, but I wanted to give a heads up to others too.
I have a ThinkPad E440 that is a year old. From the very first time I turned it on, there have been issues. The first hardware scan (via Lenovo Solution Center - LSC) showed a warning for the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 Local Connection Test. There were also tons of System Events that always show up in the "Configuration History" part of the LSC. You can look at the calendar and tell exactly which days I used the computer because there will be System Events generated each day. Things like app crashes and failed drivers.
In July 2014, I got the first warning for the 16 GB SSD - the SMART Short Self-Test. By February this year it showed as failed for each hardware scan (these were initially set up to run monthly).
Also the whole time I've had it the touch screen would just stop working at some point and I would have to reboot to get it working again.
I finally called Lenovo on March 30th, before my warranty expired. When I called that time, I didn't realize the hard drive failure was the SSD. So they sent me a new 500 GB drive. I also added the other things into the case when I talked to them. For the wireless issue they suggested making sure the driver was up to date. I did this and let them know when I called back that it was up to date and still having the warning. So I called them to tell them to tell them about the wireless and also that I realized it was the SSD having the failure, not the main drive. The first case had already been closed even though none of the other items were addressed.
So they opened another case (this is #2). They said to mail them the laptop since the wireless issue would probably be on the board and it wasn't something I could fix myself. They sent a box with a prepaid overnight shipping label. I was very sick for a few days so I sent it back to them on April 10th (a Friday). Via UPS I saw it was delivered on Saturday. Work was performed on it Monday, April 13th and sent back to me that very day. I received it on April 14th. This part of the service has been excellent - very fast response.
Being in IT, I included a letter with the laptop that outlined the issues that should have been in the case. I also printed the hardware scans and what the system events looked like.
When I got the laptop back, the sheet inside said they had replaced the Speaker because of Distorted Sound. This was not even on the list even though I had noticed it. I didn't even power up the laptop before calling them again - yes, I was furious! Plus our power was out...
So this was noon on the 14th. They opened case #3 and sent me ANOTHER BOX so I could send it back.
After our power came back on the 15th, I powered up my laptop. I opened the browser (I have it set to restore the previous session) and there was a sexually explicit video on YouTube. I opened the other browser and there was a different video on YouTube. So this person was watching YouTube instead of fixing my laptop. I looked through both browser histories and there was quite a bit of activity while my laptop was at the repair center... I ran the hardware scan - still failed and a warning for the wireless. They really hadn't done anything.
I also found two pictures of the repair person in the recycle bin...
So I called back. I was LIVID! They opened another case (this is #4). And sent me ANOTHER BOX. I finally learned the other day that once a case is opened, it cannot be edited or added to at all. Instead, they close the other case and open a new one. I guess their turnaround time for closing cases is excellent! I've never seen a system like that - and I've used a lot of them.
I got a really nice, patient fellow on the line. He took all my info (again). I emailed him the pictures, screen captures of the YouTube videos, the letter I had sent - everything. He entered as much into the new case as he could - he talked to one of the supervisors to make sure he did it right. Somehow he flagged it so that the laptop would get more attention (time) at the repair facility. He also opened a separate case (an escalation ticket?) for a supervisor to call me regarding the person's conduct at the repair facility. He said they would call me that day. (It's now the 25th and I've never heard from anyone)
So, he sent me ANOTHER BOX. I've built up quite a stack of them.
Our power was out AGAIN from the 17th through the 19th (don't get me started).
I noticed a hardware scan had now gotten a failure on the main hard drive. So I called them on the 21st to add this to the case before sending the laptop back. The girl said they can't add anything to an existing case or edit it at all once it's opened. She would have to open a new case and SEND ME ANOTHER BOX. I told her to forget it because I was ready to send it in and didn't want to wait for another box. I also asked for a status on that "escalation case" where the supervisor was supposed to call me. In order to do this she, yes, wait for it, had to open ANOTHER CASE!! So they would know I wanted a status. I'm completely dumbfounded.
So I sent it back on the 21st. This time I practically wiped it. I had already removed all my files the last time, but I had left my bookmarks and browser history intact. I set up a guest logon with admin privileges. I updated my letter and printed off more stuff to include with the box. On one sheet I had only the case number, the serial number and machine type. On another sheet I had "DO NOT SEPARATE THIS PAPERWORK FROM THE LAPTOP" and the case number. I put this sheet on top (The guy on the 15th said my letter and stuff may have gotten separated from the laptop once it was delivered to the repair facility). I used a ton of staples so it would all stay together. I included in my letter the failure on the main hard drive and asked if they could look at it. I wrote about having to open a new case if I wanted to include it.
They received it on the 22nd. A nice gentleman from the repair facility called me that day asking about the password. that. was. written. on the sheet they have you fill out. I told him what happened last time and also mentioned the hard drive failure and asked if he could look into it. He said they would.
I received my laptop back yesterday morning. The sheet that came with it said they had "replaced the following parts to complete the repair of your laptop."
Part Description Symptom
IMAGE Replaced due to engineering change
System board Network card error
Hard disk drive Network card error
ECA-WIRELESS <no symptom listed>
There was also a sheet saying they had installed a factory preload of software and I needed to install Lenovo and Windows updates.
When I booted it up, the first thing I noticed, in the lower right corner was:
Windows 8.1
SecureBoot isn’t configured correctly
Build 9600
I ran a hardware scan. Well, I tried. It stopped part way through and said it finished successfully but most of the tasks showed up as cancelled. I tried to run it again - issues - rebooting ensued. It said the LSC wasn’t available and that I should try again or reboot.
Tried several times. Then got what I guess is the new BSOD - kinder, gentler:
Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just
collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you. (xx% complete)
If you'd like to know more, you can search online later for this error: DRIVER_CORRUPTED_EXPOOL
Even though the LSC said my Lenovo files were all up to date, I ran the Update. And first I had to download a new version of Update. Then I downloaded all of the Lenovo updates and installed them (there were quite a few). The BIOS update failed. While I was doing the Lenovo downloads, I got a light blue screen but no text (I was out of the room so I'm not sure what happened). Did CTRL-ALT-DEL and it shows only IE and Task Manager as applications that are running. Could not “Switch to” IE. Hitting window key to go to start didn't do anything. So I had to restart.
By 3pm yesterday there were 34 system events in the configuration history.
I ran the hardware scan again after I updated the Lenovo files, and you guessed it! Failure on the SSD (SMART Short Self-Test) and warning on the wireless. Nothing had changed. Except hardware scan is acting different than it did before I sent in the laptop for repairs. When it finishes, it instantly closes and just shows 100% complete. When I click on "see last results" it shows a screen called
Log Information,
Canceled 04/24/2015 n:nn pm
You have not done a hardware test on your computer
And the calendar in LSC only shows the very first hardware scan I did on Friday. Even the hardware scan screen shows the date and time of the last scan. It also shows the error code. In order to see exactly what is failing, I have to sit there and watch it very closely and snap a picture of the screen as soon as the error (or warning) shows up.
When I would try to run Windows update, it would hang up PC Settings. I couldn't even kill it using task manager because it didn't show up as a task. During this, I got a flag saying the firewall wasn't turned on. I tried to turn it on, but clicking on Turn on Windows Firewall didn't do anything. I tried to setup my Microsoft account but that just hung too.
I ended up running Windows Update FOUR TIMES to get all the updates installed. Every time I ran it, it said "Done!" and I would run it again and more would show up. The last time was this morning.
At some point, the error about SecureBoot went away.
Then, I created a bootable BIOS update disk. Following the ReadMe instructions, I went through ThinkPad Setup and verified several values. Of note:
Secure Boot was DISABLED. According to the ReadMe file, this should be ENABLED in Windows 8.1. I enabled it.
Under Startup/Boot, according to the ReadMe that came with the BIOS update, UEFI/Legacy Boot is supposed to be set at UEFI Only for Windows 8.1. Mine was set to "Both". I changed it.
In Startup, OS Optimized Defaults was DISABLED, even though it says right there (and in the BIOS update ReadMe) it should be ENABLED to meet Microsoft Windows 8 Certification Requirement.
After these updates, I flashed the new BIOS.
Then, I ran hardware scan again...
Now I have TWO failures on the SSD: Random Seek Test and SMART Short Self-Test. Great.
In the Event Viewer (that I recently discovered), it says my disk has a bad block. It just says The device, \Device\Harddisk\DR1, has a bad block. I assume this is the SSD...
There are 867 events in the event viewer - Critical, Error, and Warning...
Fifty-two of these are from October 7, 2013 - before my little laptop was a glimmer.
The rest are from when Lenovo had it and yesterday and today.
64 of them are the disk error.
341 are from DeviceSetupManager. 65 of those are from failed driver installs. 69 are for not being able to establish a connection to the windows update service. 64 are from not being able to establish a connection to the Windows Metadata and Internet Services (WMIS).
3 times it's rebooted without cleanly shutting down
60 of them are from Service Control Manager and say The TDKLIB service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.
One of them says {Registry Hive Recovered} Registry hive (file): '\??\C:\Users\Default\NTUSER.DAT' was corrupted and it has been recovered. Some data might have been lost.
16 are warnings that various processors in Group 0 are being limited by system firmware.
12 say the certificate for local system with thumbprint <bunch of hex numbers> is about to expire or already expired.
108 are warnings for failure to load the driver \Driver\WUDFRd for various devices
16 are application errors
One is for the computer rebooting from a "bug check"
15 are for name resolutions timing out after none of the configured DNS servers responded.
10 are for SecureBoot being disabled.
14 for services terminating unexpectedly
15 are for WLAN Extensibility Module has stopped
61 are for applications not being able to be restarted because the application SID does not match Conductor SID
12 are for activation of CLSID timing out waiting for the service wuauserv to stop
So, I'll call them on Monday and open. a. new. case (#5?) - but really 7. And get A NEW BOX.
I'll keep you updated!Hi amycdero and welcome to the HP Forum,
I understand that you are having scanning and printing issues after upgrading to Mavericks OS X v10.9.1. I will try my best to help you resolve this issue.
In this document for Mac OS X: Scanning Software Does Not Open or Stops Responding are steps the may help you with your scanning issue.
This document for Fixing Ink Streaks, Faded Prints, and Other Common Print Quality Problems should help with the streaking printing issue.
I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know.

Hello all, I could use some serious help on some major issues I have been having after installing Mavericks on my system (specs stated below). Never has a mac felt ever so rebelious and broken before in my lifelong period of using these systems. Anyway, after installing system 10.9, I had opened the mac App Store upon seeing that applications such as my iWork suite all had free updates. However, when I would attempt to navigate to the updates window, it would not respond to my various attempts. I then tried to get there by the system's menu bar and to my dismay, nothing would work when I clicked on it, not even the apple logo menu. I later quit the application using Command-Q and opened up the App Store by the apple menu option 'Software Update...' instead. Though it looked promising since the updates window did open, all update buttons or even '...more' info buttons were unresponsive. These same problems persisted even after restarting my computer. I had also attempted to see if repairing definitions would help by booting from the recovery start-disk and using disk utility but the repairs it carried out apparently had nothing to do with my issue. Finally, I was able to update to the new iWorks suite (which interestingly did not replace the iWorks '09 suite) by following the notification that asked about allowing automatic updates which I did.
Once trying to use Pages 5.0, I soon noticed that all I could do was merely type in a new document and change various options via key commands. Neither the inspector or top bar menus would respond to any place I click. Similarly, Evernote only starts up on the last used note and merely allows me to scroll through it. The top bar menus, the note select pane, and even clicking inside the note to input text are all not functioning and uninfluenced by any mouse clicks.
I have noticed other apps that will not respond to any sort of input, but I still have not explored all applications to know what the issues of each may be. However there are some applications that work such as Safari, Google Chrome, dolphin, iWork '09 including Pages '09, and others.
I do hope that I can avoid rolling back my system, but in the meantime, it has been quite the obticle course to use my computer for all of my school purposes.
Any help is very much appreciated,
Thank you!

I'm not sure if this is a "new" issue after upgrading to Server 10.5.6 or if it's been around and we've just noticed it. The issue is simple: if someone logs in via AFP and creates a file or renames it to something with a slash e.g. filename/08.txt,
