Malware infected firefox after i opened a email

Back around September 21st i opened an email in my Yahoo spam box thinking it was a legitimate email about my mortgage application when all of a sudden my computer and Firefox stopped working for a few seconds. I knew something malicious must have been installed. Ever since, my computer has been running slower and every once in a while will hang up. I have to wait a few seconds before the computer is responsive again.

I'm going to guess this coupon was a PDF file. There are two things you can do:
Wait until Friday, and update to Firefox 29.0.1 which fixes this issue Update Firefox to the latest version. I recommend this if you can wait two days to print PDF's
If you can't wait, How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer can help you change your PDF viewer to one that can print.

• Firefox will not open my email client when I click on a "mailto" link on any website. How can I fix this.

Anytime I drag my cursor across, or try to click on a "mailto" email link on any webpage, it will display an incorrect e-mail address (it seems to default to one in particular). It will not open a new e-mail window and if I "copy e-mail address" it's the wrong one. I've tried everything and was hoping with new updates the problem would solve itself but obviously it hasn't.
HELP ! This is driving me CRAZY

For the settings to check to ensure that Firefox opens your email client, see changing the e-mail program used by Firefox. I don't know why it shows the wrong email address.

• Firefox does not open my email. Internet Explorer does

Firefox stopped opening my email a few days ago and I have troubleshooted it with my internet supplier this morning. We found that Internet Explorer would open it but the Firefox page would still not open it. We updated Adobe Flash Player to 10.3 but still not working.

hello ray, please disable the scanning of encrypted connections/https within kaspersky's settings and see if you can load gmail properly then.

Had a trojan. Got it deleted. Now, only for the user originally infected, Firefox won't open. When clicked, window opens asking which program I want to use to open firefox.exe. Huh? Opens & works fine for other users. How do I fix this? Can I recover this user's bookmarks?

• Firefox can't open a plugin to make comments as a Facebook user in some pages...

It seems a malware blocks the comments in some pages that use the facebook comments plugin. This malware infects Firefox and Chrome and is addressed to block interactions in some social networks.
¿Any suggestions to restore Firefox to his normal behavior?
¿Any suggestions to diagnose the problem in the way Firefox manage social plugins?

• Why does Firefox 12 quit opening emails after it has successfully opened many beforehand?

When I click on an emails label, Firefox opens it so I may read it. However, after successfully opening several such emails, the system will then stop doing so. Instead all it does is change the unread email's label from being 'bold' (indicating an unread email) to just normal (indicating the email has been read - even though it has not).

Hi, I'm not sure what you mean by 'email client'. I am running Firefox 12.
The system hangs at various random points. For instance, it will hang if I click to open an email; if I try to delete one; etc. It does this after I've been using Firefox for 15-30 minutes.
Now lately (in about the last week), it has not frozen on me. But I can't rule out that it won't again because it does not hang consistently every day.
As for trying it is Safe Mode, I could try that, but it may take at least 2 weeks of usage before I would feel comfortable giving you the results. Even at that, they would be questionable - simply because of the randomness of the problem.
Wish I could be of more help...Morgan.

• I have cs4. Had to rebuild my mac OS after malware infected it. Now getting an error code 150:30 when trying to open PS. Can this be fixed or do I have to upgrade to cs6?

I have cs4. Had to rebuild my mac OS after malware infected it. Now getting an error code 150:30 when trying to open PS. Can this be fixed or do I have to upgrade to cs6?

150:30 means licensing is broken. It's a common CS4 error. On Macs it usually happens when Photoshop is retrieved from backup or migrated from another Mac. Photoshop is never meant to be moved that way. As advised, you should uninstall and reinstall from your discs.
Sine reinstall only apply the base install and the CS4 Help > Update function is outdated, you will have to manually download and install your updates from here:  Product updates for Bridge and Photoshop.

• After cleaning some malware off my system yesterday, Firefox won't open except directly after a system restart. Help?

Have reinstalled Firefox, renamed the .exe, no luck. Did another scan with Malwarebytes today and system came up clean. After reading online, it seems that this is not an uncommon problem. Can anyone offer assitance?
Oh, Firefox will not open in safe mode either.
Thanks!

Thanks, but I did a bunch of researching beforehand and none of that stuff applies. I get absolutely nothing when clicking the shortcut, going to the actual .exe, or trying to start in safe mode. Also, this is a fresh install after deleting my old profile.
Oh, and I am killing all the running instances of 'firefox.exe' in the task manager.
Any thoughts?

• After latest update a few minutes ago, Firefox won't open any web pages.

I was on a local web page run by a local server on my intranet. Firefox was not open. I opened it (the last time it worked successfully was a few hours ago). It did an update. After the update, it tried to open a Firefox web page - that failed. The local web page I was on would not open either. The web pages still work from Internet Explorer.

Can you start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> by holding down the Shift/Options key?
Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance

You can try to reinstall Firefox.
Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
*Download the full Firefox installer and save the file to the desktop<br>https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
*(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

• New add-on appeared after cleaning malware infection - is it legitimate?

I cleaned up a malware infection and, upon opening Firefox, I got a notice that a new add-on had been installed. It is called XULRunner 1.9.1 and appears to be from Mozilla. Given that I'd just had the malware infection, though, I'm suspicious of anything new adding itself.
Could anyone tell me if this is a legitimate add-on and what exactly it's for/does? Thank you very much!

In frustrationi I decided to close all of my Firefox add-ons. When i did this, the Google re-directs went away. I enabled my add-ons one at a time and after I enabled XULRunner 1.9.1 the re-directs started again. Thats proof enough for me. I would like to remove the application from my computer if anyone can help me locate it, I'd appreciate that.

• Firefox will not open at all, even after rebooting & re-installing - IE opens normally - what can I do?

I've used Firefox since version 3 - really like it compared to others.
This morning, after booting up Firefox wouldn't open. It worked when the PC was shut down last night. The eggtimer comes on briefly, then nothing. Internet Explorer works fine, as does Mailwasher (for email) and MS Outlook, so it's not an internet problem.
I'm running XP Service Pack 3 (no, really, still), with Webroot Secure Anywhere internet security.
I've tried rebooting - no effect
I've tried removing, rebooting, and reinstalling - no effect
I've tried launching it from a link within a mail message - no effect
I've tried launching it from the Start-Run line with the ~p option as in your FAQ - no effect
I've tried re-installing Adobe Flash Player, Java, Shockwave, etc..
The closest I've got to something to go on is when trying to launch a console from Webroot, when I got "Browser launch error 1073741819" - but this could be a Webroot error code.
I'm not sure what else to do - almost all your FAQ's assume you can get into the program.
The only thing I can think is that webroot removed a threat this morning, but I can't find any saved scan log as to what it was - clutching at straws, maybe that had something to do with it?
Maybe this is linked, but i'm having to write this on a different PC because the Mozilla webpages don't display properly in IE (all the other sites I can find display normally) So the installed plug-ins won't reflect what I have on the PC in question

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Maybe you restored to a version of Firefox that crashes or still have a virus problem.
(irrc some Firefox versions specifically had problems after Windows restores)
Follow up checking for malware and then try re-installing Firefox. I would also suggest you make a copy of your profile including all folders and sub files and put it somewhere safe as it may assist in restoring your bookmarks and information.

• Firefox won't open after re-installing and can't remove from control panel. What do I do?

After a storm and short power failure, I started having trouble with certain sites loading, and pages moving slower. I emptied my cache and defragged and ran total virus/ malware scan, but still had problem. (Pages loaded fine on AOL) I decided to uninstall Firefox and re-install to help fix problem. I did this, and now Firefox won't open, no matter if I double click, right click (open), or go through "all programs". I tried to uninstall and re-install again, but now I can't get it to respond through my control panel, either.

After upgrading firefox to 6.0.2 firefox crashes upon opening. When I try to open firefox the "Mozilla Crash Reporter" opens up. I tried all the sugestions on the support page. None of these worked. It will open with the computer in safe mode. I can not find where to start firefox in safe mode after upgrading.
I can open it now after running firefox in compatibility mode for windows XP sp2. The problem with this is I have to accept permission everytime I open firefox. If I change user account control settings to not ask every time firefox crashes on opening again.

• Unable to open my email messages on Firefox? How do I fix this?

I am not able to read my emails while I am in Firefox. This has happened about 8 days ago. I don't recall how this happened because I was able to use FF very well & never had any problems. I have been using Internet Explorer because most of my work has to be done on IE, the problem is that IE crashes too many times and its become very slow, I am just sick of it. I decided to use FF to read my emails & to do my PCH sweepstakes and play some games and maybe I would not get the screen crashing effect that I'm getting on IE. However, in order to get to do this I must open my email messages to proceed with the sweepstakes, but for some reason when I click on my messages nothing happens, they don't open up. How can this be repaird? I have even gone as far as deleting FF and re-downloading it again, but the problem still persists. I need help please!
I made a copy of my email screen to place in the box below, but it is not allowing me to paste? I tried clicking on install but all I got was an error message that it could not open up this document because it needs to know the creator. I've tried to open with different programs but it just won't work. Can anyone please give me some assistance?

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
