MAMP or XAMPP? which is preferable?

first of all, i have just shifted to mac a week ago and m really a newbie in the web programming...
i got my MBP just a week ago and thinking to start learning the web developing stuffs in it and want to configure the environment suitable for me...
as far as i know, MBP comes with apache and PHP pre-installed in it and i only have to get mysql installed...so i what i wanna know is should i install only mysql and start getting ideas on how to use it or should i install whole package including apache and PHP?
and if its the second option i have to go with, which package should i install, MAMP or XAMPP?

I have Zend Server, which includes Apache, PHP, MySQl, phpMyAdmin. It works very well. I use it to run MediaWiki and it's fine.
AFAIK, if you plan to update manually Apache or PHP, then you should not use the preinstalled versions, but instead install your own copies (i.e. install the whole package) because the preinstalled copies will be modified when Apple deploys updates for them (which are typically included in the system updates,) and in this case they might conflict with your 'manual' updates.

SSIS designer and runtime, basic transforms, and data profiling tools are only supported by Standard and higher editions. Besides, some advanced SSIS adapters such as High performance Oracle/Teradata destination and Dimension processing destination adapter
are only supported in Enterprise edition. So, if you need to develop/modify SSIS packages on this server, Standard or even Enterprise editor is recommended.

HDCam or DCP. Which is preferable for my film?

Not saying it's going to happen but just in case my film is selected for screening at a festival I'd like to be prepared. So my question:
I shot 1080i, my timeline is currently 1080i tho maybe it should be 1080p. Anyways, which would be preferable for my film, HDCam or DCP?
DCP: I see there are ways to do-it-yourself tho it sounds tricky. The alternative is very expensive.
HDCam: On one thread someone said go to a local PBS or TV station and they would make the transfer free. Free? That sounds impossible in the good old USA. Anyone have any advice on HDCam?

For a 64-bit OS, which is preferred: 32-bit or 64-bit version of R28.0.1?

If one didn't need large heaps, which would be preferred for a 64-bit OS, the 32-bit or 64-bit version of JRockit?
If compressed refs is used (and is by default anyway when heaps are < 4GB, right?) is there any performance trade off when using the 64-bit JVM?
What I've noticed is that there seems to be a trend in distributions to move away from the 32-bit gcc support in 64-bit platforms. Effectively our issues boil down to the linux community seeing that binaries that are linked to libstdc++.so.5 are considered "legacy" vs newer binaries that are linked to "libstdc++.so.6". In our platform, this includes the Jrockit JDK and the apache weblogic connector as both are dependent on libstdc++.so.5 (we're currently using the 32-bit version of the JVM).
Presumably the 64-bit version is linked to "libstdc++.so.6"?
As always I'm sure there are trade-offs, but what I'm looking for is a good scorecard to understand those trade-offs :)
We mostly run WLS 9.2.3, but also have tomcat 6 and standalone command line applications (in case that colors any responses).

Probably changing the compatibility level of setup.exe might help.
However you dont really have to uninstall 32 bit SQL to install 64 bit. Both can go side by side.

In R3 create a datasource form txn RSO2. Base the datasource on the table which has your fields in.
From here reolicate your data source in bw and then u can concatenate the fields using some simple ABAP in your transformations.

Which is better, the sid name in lower or upper case? When I created a database with sid name in UPPER case, my file_name in dba_data_files is something like this, /u01/oradata/TESTDB/users01.dbf.
So base on your experience, should the sid name be in lower or upper case? Thank you in advance.

I've habituated to upper case, even though as a unix bigot I tend to do things in lower case. Don't forget dbname and service names in their various places too, obscure bugs in various places have popped up with those over the years.
See Bug 9438890 - DBMS_AUDIT_MGMT.CLEAN_AUDIT_TRAIL does not work for AUDIT_TRAIL=OS with uppercase ORACLE_SID for a recent silly example. Someone somewhere must have been slapping their forehead over that one.

Boxed set vs. downloads - which is preferable?

In general, are downloads preferred for any technical reason over having the boxed set of software mailed to you?

I prefer the boxed sets since that eliminates wasting resources (time, electricity, and bandwidth) DLing or re-DLing the stuff. Also, allows you to install w/o being tied to the Internet.

I run my system 24-7 but use sleep mode overnight. Also have UPS protection to prevent unintended shutdowns due to power outages.
The only time I turn off the system is during electrical storms.

Which is preferable, MacDrive or HFSExplorere?

I have a new MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard and I have created a Bootcamp partition and installed Windows 7 successfully. Everything works except that I cannot open files from the Mac partition unless I first copy them to the Windows partition. I understand that I cannot edit files and write them back to the Mac partition but would like to be able to do things like open pdf files or play music files without making duplicate copies of everything. I understand that either MacDrive ($50) or HFSExplorer (Free, but with fewer capabilities) will make this possible. Does anyone have a recommendation either way? I don't mind paying for MacDrive if it is much better and will allow me to do things I can't do in HFSExplorer, I'm just trying to figure out what makes the most sense. I suppose I could use the trial version of MacDrive and then try HFSExplorer but thought I would ask the question first and see what suggestions come back.

I'm using Snow Leopard and Windows 7 and I can open/read all the files on my Mac partition. Boot Camp 3 drivers included a driver to be able to read (read-only) files from a Mac partition.
I've never used HFSExplorer, but I have used MacDrive. However, one thing about MacDrive is, it allows full read and write access to your drive, so, if you enable full read and write, you're going to have all those messy Windows files stored onto your Mac partition. Now, most of these files won't make a difference on your Mac partition, but knowing they're there bugs me.
However, if you choose to enable read-only in MacDrive, you'll notice you may have a hard time using any files that are stored on your Mac partition in Windows.
With the driver that is included in Boot Camp, you get full read privileges and everything seems to open nicely in Windows. I added all my documents, MP3's, videos and pictures to my Windows "Library" and all of them open/play just fine. Also, since it's read-only, you don't get the messy Windows files saved onto your Mac partition.
Do you perhaps have a trial version of MacDrive or HFSExplorer installed? It may interfere with the Boot Camp driver.

RunBooks vs. Autosys - which is preferable?

Hey folks, I am currently using Autosys as an automation tool for JOB scheduling. It was suggested that Run Book Automation (RBA) be used instead of Autosys. Has anybody used RunBooks? If so, please advice if it a better alternative? I would also really appreciate if anyone can reveal its pros & cons? Is this the best alternative for Autosys? Or is there anything better than Runbooks automation (RBA)? Please provide any support documents as well.

Which is the prefered way to rollback a patch set?

I am about to apply a patch set to my test database 10.2.0.3. Because of a bug, I need to patch up to patch #27 (7353785). From reading the patch doc, it suggested I backup the ORACLE_HOME mountpoint and also the inventory directory. There is a rollback procedure for rolling back the patch as well.
1) If after the patch has been applied, what would be the best way to back out of the patch say, after the database has been running for a few days after the patch?
2) What would be the best way to back out of the patch, a few hours after the patch?
3) which is preferred, using the rollback procedure (opatch rollback -id 7353785) or using the backup ORACLE_HOME and backup inventory directory taken just before the patch is applied?

Hello! I cannot get Apache to start after loading up WAMP (I also tried using XAMPP, but with the same result). This is driving me crazy. I am starting to build my first Joomla site and I have Joomla succesfully loaded onto my server site, but because of the Apache issue, I can't load Joomla onto my local server.
This is what is going on:
have successfully loaded MAMP and MAMPro. This is a fresh reload as of today. When I go to start the MAMP, I get the following message with regards to Apache:

I got brave and went into the root using terminal.app. After following the instructions on that page as best I could, there did seem to be a lot of semapores (maybe 50+), but how to delete them was unclear to me on that page. I tried to follow Step 2 by copying this line and pasting it into the terminal prompt:
ipcs -s # grep apache # perl -e ‘while () { @a=split(/\s+/); print `ipcrm sem $a[1]`}’
but it was pretty unclear if I was doing it correctly and there seemed to be no real result. I got too nervous working in terminal to try to continue the instructions on how to delete them, so I got out of terminal and decided to see if there was anything else that might help.
After being in there, I tried to run Apache from MAMP, and, once again, I got the same error. I then found this site:

I did type in "localhost" in the browser, and it DID show apache running with the confirmation window looking exactly as in the article. I then follow the instructions back to terminal.app and did the following command:
sudo pico http.conf

#AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
#AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
however, there were so many warnings about making and changes and such that I decided NOT to eliminate the # sign as the article recommended and just got out of terminal.
The thing is this. Under MAMP, everything seems to be running EXCEPT Apache. However, when I type "localhost" in the command line of my foxfire browser, Apache seems to be running fine.
On another forum, where I have posted exactly as above, the response was:

The script you've used is not correct, the # symbols have to be replaced with pipes | to execute the commands one after another. You should execute this as admin using "sudo" followed by the commands. You also have to replace "apache" with the user name under which apache is currently running. For MAMP Pro that is either "www" or your user name:
This will list all active semaphores of the user "www"

This one should remove them (at least it one runs without any errors)
I tried this but I'm afraid that I am still having the exact same problem. In fact, I unloaded MAMP and then tried XAMPP, which also didn't work. I tried to follow the directions above, but I'm so unfamiliar with how to do terminal in Mac, that I'm really not sure that I'm doing things correctly, or that I'm even addressing the problem. how do I know what the username is for apache? How do I know what my username is? I know that these are basic questions, but I have never had to do this before and I don't know where to find the answers. I simply copied and pasted into terminal EXACTLY what it was posted. Ok, first thing, why are you doing anything with WAMP or XAMPP when you're running a Mac? MAMP should be what you want unless you're not explaining part of what you are trying to do.
2nd thing, I haven't used MAMP in a while, but there are two possibilities for not seeing what you want to see once you have MAMP turned on. One possibility is that you already have "Web Sharing" turned on in your Sharing Preference Pane. If that is the case, port 80 will already be taken and you'll be seeing the default Apache install (files are stored at /Library/WebServer/Documents/). This would push MAMP to either not turn on it's web serving capabilities, or to push it to another port. The other possibility is that MAMP defaults to another port anyway. So instead of localhost, you might have to type in localhost:8080 or something similar. I believe the control panel that gets installed can take you to the currently MAMP-served page, and it can also help you change which port your serving on.
80 is the default port for web serving and the ONLY port that will let you get straight to the server without having to type in webaddress.com:port# instead of just webaddress.com.

110V vs. 220V, which is better?

I'm going to be living for the next several months where I can use either 110V or 220V power. I know the charger is dual voltage, and I can use it with either voltage with a simple plug adapter. My question is, which is preferable? Will the battery charge twice as fast at 220V? Will using 220V create other issues like excessive heat in the charger or laptop? Any other reasons I'm not thinking of? I know the simple Watts = Volts x Amps, but I think that's more for DC current, and I suspect there are other more complex issues with how the charger handles voltage. Since I am not an electrical engineer I'm not really sure how it works. Thanks!

As I live in Europe, I can share some additional advice: I'm running the MBP here on the standard 230 V without any problems; given the fact that it's the same model you get in the US (power supply wise, of course keyboards differ), there shouldn't be ANY issues.

BootCamp Advice on gaming uses and which Windows OS to use.

I am about to purchase a new MacBook Pro 13.3 inch with 2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, 320M GeForce NVIDEA card, 256MB.
I am going to use it as a hub in university but also I am going to use it as a gaming device. I am using the Mac OSX to run the intensive RTS games (e.g Total War games) but I would also like to know if I can use BootCamp to run windows games on the Mac too, so I can play a wider library (E.g. FPS games also found on the consoles, RPGs and so on).
If this is the case, which windows OS should I use? XP, Vista, or Windows 7, to get the best gaming experience from my specs. Note that price is not a deal-breaker but it is a disadvantage, so if for example XP was only marginally worse than Windows 7, I would probably take it and avoid unneeded cost.
Just as a note, I am unlikely to use Bootcamp for anything else very intensive, just if I have any other compatibility issues with programs I need to run.

Sounds like you are rationalizing why you should stay with an older OS. I use Windows 7 64bit every day running in BootCamp for work. It runs quick, is extremely stable (leaps and bounds better than XP or Vista), it is more secure, is easier to network, I never experience instability, and I never have overheating issues. I don't know what running games "significantly better" means. The games will run as they were designed to run.
The advantages of Windows 7 over XP or Vista are well documented. But if you want to stay with an older OS that is your choice. I opted to go with the better OS.
