Man command

I'm running the Intel version of Solaris 8. When I try the man command, it doesn't work. Do I have to install any additional software to make it work?

Uh, I have no idea what you're talking about. What's the error message? What packages did you omit during installation? Be more specific and I'll try to answer your question.

Have you downloaded/compiled/installed docbook-to-man as it is not part of the Solaris distribution.
If you have then add it's location to your $PATH.

  • -bash: man: command not found

    Hi All,
The problem I faced is that after a fresh installation of Oralce Linux 6 with the Minimal Installation option selected I cant use the MAN command.
    [root@oelinux /]# which man
    /usr/bin/which: no man in (/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/root/bin)
    [root@oelinux /]# man man
    -bash: man: command not found
[root@oelinux /]# I think I need install some missing packages. Does anybody know how to solve this. Google couldn't manage to help.

Also managed to create a repo file. Format is some like this
    [DVD]
    enabled = 1
name = From Server on dvd
    baseurl = file:///media/cdrom0/Server
    gpgcheck = 0
where [DVD] matches the name of the repo file: DVD.repo (The file must be placed in the /etc/yum.repos.d)
enable -- says that yum should use the repository
name -- is the name of the repository as you would see it in the graphical version of the yum
baseurl is location of dvd after you have mounted it.
After all that I can check with
    [root@oelinux yum.repos.d]# yum list available | wc -l
This system is not registered with ULN.
    ULN support will be disabled.
    2587
[root@oelinux yum.repos.d]# that now i have available packages.

  • How to get man working ?

    Hello
I don't know how my man command is not working any more. Probably after one of the updates from Sun update connection.
The man executable is running fine, but it can't find any man pages.
    I tried
    man man
man ifconfigand it says there is no man page for man or for ifconfig, although my MANPATH looks as usual: /usr/dt/man:/usr/man:.....
Please, do you know what could be wrong with it ?
    Thank you,
    Timothy Madden,
    Romana

Looking into /usr/man, which is a link to /usr/share/man, I see there are only a few of the man pages there., for sman1, man1 and sman1m. Where should the man page for ifconfig be normaly found ?
Now I remember I edited /etc/profile and marked MANPATH for export, the same as PATH was marked already. And also I added the path to the Sun Studio man pages to the MANPATH, in the same /etc/profile, as the Sun Studio installer does not do it for me.
Could this be the cause ? How am I supposed to add a directory to MANPATH if so ?
    Thank you,
    Timothy Madden,
    Romania

  • Query on –m option of iptables command

I have a query on the use of the –m option of iptables command in RHEL 6.0. I have seen commands like:
    iptables –A INPUT –m state --state ESTABLISHED,RELATED –j ACCEPT
which makes quite good sense but the below command:
    iptables –A PREROUTING -s 10.101.17.34 –d 10.101.15.84 –p tcp –m tcp --dport 443 –j REDIRECT –to-ports 30080
does not seem to be useful as tcp is already given against the –p option then what is the use of specifying –m option again with tcp. I am be wrong on this.
I hope my query is clear.
Please revert with the reply to my query.
    Regards

    Hi,
When we see the man command for iptables which is the manual reference.
    # man 8 iptables
    -m, --match match
Specifies a match to use, that is, an extension module that tests for a specific property. The set of matches make up the condition under which a target is invoked. Matches are evaluated first to last as specified on the command line and work in short-circuit fashion, i.e. if one extension yields false, evaluation will stop.
For more information, look at this URL.
The match can be: account , comment , connbytes , connlimit , ipv4options , osf, recent, set, tos, tcp, udp
For more information, look at this URL.
I hope this can help you
    Best Regards

  • What are all the 'Terminal' Commands?

I use Terminal for fun with the commands and the killall argument command but i really want to know all the terminal commands so that i am not that bored. I always use the commands i know but they are getting old so please help.
    PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks,
    Andrew.

The commands are be scattered around the hd.  A command is any file with the execution bit set on.
The best way to go is to go to your local library and find any book on unix or bash.  There will be some difference between what you read and what is available in X.  the man command should key you in on the differences.
A book on Bash would be helpful.
Here is the book that I use:
Mac OS X Tiger in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference (In a Nutshell (O'Reilly))
This is also good & was in my local library.
Practical Guide to Linux Commands, Editors, and Shell Programming, A (2nd Edition) [Paperback] the book Don't be fooled by the name, the second addition includes Mac OS X.
Advanced Bash Script. premise: Examples for everything. I have revision 6.2.
    tldp.org/LDP/abs/abs-guide.pdf
    BASH Programming - Introduction HOW-TO
    http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Bash-Prog-Intro-HOWTO.html#toc14
    Apple administrative commands
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/IntroCommandLine_v10.6.pdf
    Apple Shell Scripting Primer
    https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/OpenSource/Conceptual/Shel lScripting/ShellScripting.pdf
Check you local library. Any book on Bash syntax will do. There will be minor differences but they will not be great.
Sometimes you can get a good deal on used books in Amazon.

  • Man Pages when installing from source

    Hello,
Whenever I can, I prefer to install applications by source following the steps:
    1. sudo ./configures --prefix=/usr/local/app-name
    2. sudo make
    3. sudo make install
Everything runs fine (the only difference is the prefix parameter), but the applications is not automatically added to the PATH.
If the app should be available to all users I create a symbolic link in /usr/bin pointing to /usr/local/app-name/bin. If it is just for a single user, I added the location to .bash_profile file of the user.
Now I noticed that the man page of the app-name is unavailable, because the man page file is installed in /usr/local/app-name/share/man, in a location different from the rest.
Can someone help me to fix the linkage of the man pages? Where does the man command reads from by default?
Note: I prefer to install with --prefix to /usr/local/app-name because it's easier to remove the entire application when I don't need it.
    Thank you.

Yeah... it worked like a charm!
    Thank you Zerwas.
I marked as Solved but what if we want the man page to be available to all users without the need to edit .bash_profile? Can we create a symbolic link somewhere? (like I do with the /usr/bin) Certainly there's a default folder for man pages.
    Thanks again.

  • Burrito - can't set 'command line arguments' (mobile)

    Hi all,
The option to set command line arguments in the "Run/Debug Settings" - "Launch Configurations" dialog disappears when a new "Flex Mobile AIR Project" is created.
I am developing APKs that are launched via Intents from other Android apps; setting arguments for testing in the IDE would improve the workflow that now requires me to deploy to the device for testing. Is there a workaround for this?
    Thanks,

Put the command into a file with execute permissions, including whatever command-line arguments you want. For instance, the file might contain the following:
    #! /bin/bash
    xpdf -g 1200x900 -z width -cont "$1"
In Firefox preferences, under "Applications," locate the appropriate Content Type and in the Action menu, select "Use other..." and then locate the executable file you just created and select it.
In UNIX-type operating systems at least, available options to the command can be found using the "man" command (e.g. "man xpdf" for the example above).

  • Basic commands not running

    Dear All,
Only after installing Lion, the Terminal now claims
    that "man: command not found"
"ssh: command not found"  (remote login enabled)
I've also realised some missing environment variables
    echo $PATH just returns /bin
    Regards
    El

Well, it's alright that those missing files do not exist. The command I provided would try to find files that could possibly be changing the PATH variable. And it did! Log on to the problem account "thestudio" and move /Users/thestudio/.bash_profile ->
    /bin/mv /Users/thestudio/.bash_profile /Users/thestudio/bash_profile
Quit the Terminal.app then reopen it. Now try->
    echo $PATH

Can You verify that the man-files are installed?
What kind of installation do You have. If You
have a core installation I don't think the man pages are installed
    (Was so in the past)
If they are installed, try man -M /usr/share/man ls
    /Ulf

  • Missing commands/utilities after version 10-x86 install

I've had more problems installing version 10-x86 than any other version I can recall (most SPARC/x86 since version 6).
I downloaded and created the installation set (4 CDs) from the ISO images. The first problem was that it couldn't run the gui because the box had only 255 MB RAM (it needed 400). Because of that (even when I specified the console txt installation), the rest of the installation seemed gimped.
The install used very little of disc 2, nothing from disc 3 and practically nothing from disc 4. When I finally finished the installs, I find that there is no man command or tcsh shell on the system. I downloaded the source for tcsh and attempted the ./configure only to find out that I have no assembler (as).
Where can I obtain either installable downloads for man and as? Was there supposed to be a companion or utility CD that was not in the 4 disc download?
Thanks in advance for any clues.

I downloaded the current version (Solaris 10 - x86 Platform - Solaris 10 1/06 Operating System) and selected full installation.
The commands are not in the directories. I looked on a SPARC 10 install to find the correct locations and could not find them on the x86 install using:
ls -l /bin/tcshNor were they anywhere on the system using:
find / -name tcsh -print I just read the post before mine about the missing man command and will try using pkgadd from the various CDs.
