Manage AEBS From Wired Computers

I have a LAN with 7 or 8 computers connected. All but 2 connect wirelessly. I have yet to assign static IP addresses and intend to shortly. Part of the reason for static IPs is that one of the wired computer's IP changes from time to time and then I need to change the port mapping to it.
Now for the dumb part ... why can't I manage (administer) the AEBS from the wired computer? When it's IP changes I have to go to a wirelessly connected computer to administer the AEBS. From the wired computer neither the AEBS or AExp show up in the Airport Utility side bar, the Utility says it can't find any and to make sure they are in range, blah, blah.
Thank you

If you already have the AirPort Utility in the \Utilities folder there probably isn't any reason to reinstall it unless it isn't the latest version. Currently that would be v5.5.3.
If you have an 802.11n AirPort Extreme, you could consider using the DHCP Reservation feature to assign a "static" IP address to any device that you will be port mapping to. This feature allows you to assign an IP address out of the DHCP pool to a network client based on its MAC address. You would then only need to do this for that device and all others can still be set up as DHCP clients.

When setting up sync how does sync manage information from two computers? Does it merge the information?

    Hi!
Yes, the way Sync works is that it puts all the Bookmarks together and pushes them to all your devices. Same with History.
You will not loose any information in any of your computers.

  • How to transfer videos onto iPad from multiple computers?

I have an iPad mini.  Most of the time, I don't use it with a computer, but occasionally, I need to load videos onto it for editing.  I have two comptuers I need to load videos from (work and home).  Do I understand correctly that this is not possible?  I can manage media from multiple computers via iTunes, but it appears that the only way to get videos into the camera roll is to actually sync with iTunes?  And that's can only be done with one computer at a time?  And that changing which computer I use wipes the iPad?
I've tried both Google Drive and Dropbox as well, and while the videos do show up and are playable, there doesn't appear to be any way to get the videos out of either app.  The videos are in MP4 format.
    Any advice?

One work around could be: say you sync with comptuer A, use dropbox to get the videos from B to A, then iTunes to get them from A to your iPad.

  • Manually manage music on two computers with iPhone 4s

For the past few months I have had not issues manually managing my ipod touch on two computers. This is a necessesity as I own a mac laptop but like to listen to audiobooks from my local library which will only download to a PC. With my iPod touch all I had to do was make sure that the manually manage music was turned on and I could put the music from my computer on the device than go and use my friend's pc to put on the audiobooks (WMA Overdrive format). Since getting the iPhone 4S it has been a nightmare to get the same result. I even went so far as to plug it into each computer completely when nothing was on the iphone and turn on manually manage music in each, than put all my music from the mac on it. Only to find that when I opened up itunes in the PC manually manage music was unchecked again. The only way to turn it back on is to sync and erase all my music, thus forcing me to carry around both an ipod and an Iphone, which is more than a little annoying.
    Please help!

Unlike the iPods, including the iPod Touch, iPhones will synch with ONLY ONE iTunes library at a time.  You will NOT be able to manually manage music from 2 computers with your iPhone.

  • I want to manually manage and add songs to my iPhone 4 from multiple computers, but it will not allow me to without erasing the music I currently have...any suggestions?

I can manually manage content from my personal computer, but I cannot do that on other computers. why is that?

Because this is not and has never been a feature of any iphone.
You can sync or manually mange with one and ONLY ONE itunes library/computer at a time.  Syncing/managing to another will indeed erase the current content.

  • Manually managing music on iPhone from multiple computers

Everything I've read 'claims' this can be but I don't think the people who tell you how to do it even bother to see what happens.  This is one of the things that really frustrate me about forums.  It's the complete lack of thoroughness of the people who reply to a question without knowing the outcome.
It's a simple task.  I want to be able to move music from multitple computers to my iPhone.  When I go into iTunes and select the device, in my case it's the iPhone, and check the box to manually manage music and videos then click 'apply' I get a warning that everything is going to be erased from the phone.  WTH!?!  And no one on ANY forum who suggests this is the proper way manually managing music even has a solution to be able to do this WITHOUT erasing the phone.
C'mon Apple.  It's a SIMPLE drag-n-drop implementation.  How hard can it be?  I'm not the least interested in syncing with some music library on the computer.  In fact I don't even sync my phone with the iTunes Library.  It's a waste of time because I can't even selectively sync music.  It's either all or nothing.  STUPID.  I simply want to move music on and off the phone.  You know, drag into the window to add and drag off to remove.  And I want to be able to do it from any computer I want that's running iTunes.  I shouldn't have to copy music from a different computer, carry it home and add it from the home system.  That completely defeats the concept of portability.  And if my home computer happens to go south for some reason then what?  Even if I have all my music backed up, I have to wipe out all my music on the phone and start all over because I'm now using a different computer.  Who was the genius that came up with that ludicrous idea?
Apple you really need to take a page from Sandisk and allow iPhones to be treated as external drives so we can drag and drop our music onto them.  No muss no fuss.  Simple and clean with no hair pulling.  It's already established the you create some very pretty devices.  Now let's work on improving usability.  Because the way I see it, it's a bit backwards.

    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans with iTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
As long as your media is organised within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organised) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.
When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behaviour has been changed but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entires and import the local content you have on that box.

  • How do I delete a network and start over with no wired computers??

I've been trying forever to delete my parents network...it has a WEP I can't remember, and I just want to start from scratch.  I've tried reseting the router...I've even called a Linksys tech, and even she was baffled.  I have no wired computers...Can anyone help???

The only thing you can't do is upgrade the firmware.
That being said ... I have to assume you are using Windows XP and windows is managing the wireless network connections.
If any of these assumptions are false, my advice may not be as helpful.
Step 1. Delete all networks from the Preferred Networks list.
    - open the wireless network connections window (double-click on icon in task bar)
    - click on Advanced tab (bottom left)
    - select each network that is shown and delete/remove it (can't remember what the button is called)
    Step 2. Reset the router.
    - unplugging the router does not accomplish anything here
    - locate the reset button ... press AND hold for at least 5 seconds
    - once you release the button, various lights on the front panel will flash as the router boots
    - when you have a steady green for power, look to see if you have a green light for WLAN
    - if the wireless is turned OFF by default (no green light for WLAN) you will have to find a way connect wired for at least a few minutes to turn it on (take it to a friends, bring the friend to it ... whatever works)
Step 3. Setup the router for secure wireless.
    - if the WLAN is lit after resetting, you should see a notification on the computer saying "one or more wireless networks are in range"
    - click on that notification and find an unsecured network called linksys (if there is more then one, pick the one with the highest signal strength)
    - once you connect to that, open Internet Explorer and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1
    - the user name is left blank and the password is admin
    - change the password (under the Administration tab)
    - under the Wireless tab change the SSID name
    - under the Wireless Security tab choose WPA-shared key (better the WEP) and a phrase
    - once you apply the changes you will lose your connection
    - go back into the wireless network connections window and you should now see a secured network with the name you picked
    - try to connect to it, a dialog will appear asking for encryption type (WPA-shared key) and phrase
    - once you have successfully connected windows will automatically set up that network as default and connect to it whenever it is in range.
Let me know if any of this is ?!?

  • Is it possible to control itunes dj from other computers on the same network?

is it possible to control itunes dj from other computers on the same network?  we have a computer running itunes connected to our speakers here at work, and we'd like to be able to control it through the other comptuers on the network.  is this possible, or do you have to use iphones/ipads/etc?

AC is corret you can do that.  It might work a bit better for you if you use a wired connection vs a wireless one for the ATV's.

  • If i update my ipod will it delete all my music as it is from various computers?

I have a 32GB iPod touch and when I plug it into the computer, it says an update is available. I manually manage my music so that I can take music from my laptop and the other computers in my house as well. If I update my ipod to this newer version will all my music be deleted? If it does that I don't want to update because I have music on there from old computers which are no longer available. I have heard of similar problems happening to other people which is why i have this query.
When i plug my iPod in, it says 'A new iPod software version (5.11) is available for the iPod. Would you like to update your ipod now?' I click update and it says 'Updating to iOS 5.1.1 will delete all of the apps and media, including iTunes Store purchases, on your iPod touch. To preserve your content, apply this update on the computer where you sync apps, music, videos, and photos. Updating on this computer will only preserve contacts, calendars, text messages, and other settings. Please do not interrupt the update, which may take an hour or longer to complete. iTunes will verify the software update with Apple.'
    thanks.

  • A Colour Management tutorial from an amateur

Archiving at the end of a long project I came across a document I assembled at the start when I wanted to teach myself about colour management. I spent several weeks reading, experimenting and putting together these notes, but it all came to nought. To quote from the notes:
…I chose not to use colour management when printing my books on a Xerox iGen3. I converted the InDesign files to PDF with all colour management turned off, and asked the printer to print ‘direct’. The iGen RIP converted RGB images to CMYK, and CMYK images were printed as per the colour numbers. Using certain colour settings for my monitor, and for Photoshop and InDesign, I was able to obtain a very close match between what was on screen and what was on paper without the need for profiles…
I've asked a fair few questions here over the years, and this forum has been a great help, but I rarely offer anything in return. Well, here's a little something that some people might find useful. A mob of information about colour management, collated from various sources with my tuppence worth here and there to make it flow. It was put together before my InDesign days when I used Pages, so forgive the mediocre layout.
Colour Management (450k) can be downloaded here: http://www.mediafire.com/?86edp6742ac6zlv (If Peter Spier is reading this: Peter, that's a hot link now; I've upgraded my Mediafire account so there are no more banners).
If anyone visits here in the future and that link doesn't work (which will happen if I upload a new version), try this one, a link to the folder: http://www.mediafire.com/?an9n0o36nymwv
Please let me know if there are any gross errors in the PDF and I'll fire up Pages and correct them.

geoffseeley, Welcome to the discussion area!
    1) amber light keeps flashing but internet works - is this a problem?
I believe that indicates that you do not have wireless encryption enabled. If you enabled wireless encryption, the light should turn green.
    3) how does iTunes work through the extreme box? am i supposed to plug my home cinema into the extreme box somehow?
The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) has no special features to support video/audio directly. iTunes has nothing to do with the AEBS.
The AirPort Express (AX) has an audio out port for streaming music from iTunes.

  • Putting music on from multiple computers

Is it ever going to be possible to put music on the iPod from mulitple computers without the songs that are already on the iPod being deleted?

yes..its acutally been possible..if you're using itunes 7..goto your ipod under devices then click on the summary tab..then at the bottom you're going to checkmark manually manage songs and playlists
basically this is going to change how the ipod will update..instead of your ipod automatically updating whenever you plug it in..you'll have to manually click and drag the songs out of your library and drop them onto your ipod under devices
NOTE: you can highlight mulitpule songs if you hold in the shift key while clicking on the songs you would like then you can drag that highlighted group and drop them onto your ipod under devices
if you want to highlight the whole library you can click on one song then goto Edit>Select All then drag the highlighted group to the ipod under devices
    hope this helps..

This online MacWorld article might be helpful: MacWorld iWeb Drobbox
Managing an iWeb site from multiple Macs.
Since you have to all be using the same domain.sites file another method is to put the file on a flash drive and carry it between computers. If those computers are not all yours then the drop box method may be the best method. However, two cannot try to edit at the same time and sufficient time must be given for any edits to be distributed to the other Macs.

  • Wireless computers cannot see wired computers

I'm a bit frustrated at this point: It seems like such a simple problem:
I have both wireless and wired computers connected to my Verizon router (Westell, I think).
All computers can access the Internet
All computers are Windows 7 with all updates.
The "wired" computers can see each other and share files and printers.
The "wireless" computers can only see internet, not other computers.
I have a working "home group" between the wired computers.
The wireless computers say there is no homegroup available to connect to. Also, Network in Windows does not show any other computers on the wireless ones.
    Wireless security is WPA/2
I have run every "Troubleshooter" that I can find, in Windows and the Verizon In-Home Agent.
The closest I have come to figuring this out is that I have seen some discussion about "bridging" the wireless network to the wired network.  It seems that this setting is part of the Router setup, but I am just guessing at this point.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I have 1 wireless and 2 wired PCs and I too have had trouble with the wireless PC “seeing” the wired PCs (and vice versa) in Network and HomeGroup.
Occasionally, the wireless PC name would be displayed in HomeGroup and Network on a wired PC but every attempt at connecting would fail.
I’ve researched this problem by reading quite a few forums (including several Microsoft forums) and implemented many suggestions with no results. All of the modifications dealt with settings within Windows, remove and reconnect to the HomeGroup, HomeGroup and Sharing options, etc. but this was the first suggestion to affect the router.
All 3 PCs had no problems or issues accessing the Internet. The only issue was the inability to transfer files across the LAN.
I have an “older” Verizon Actiontec MI424-WR (Rev C) router using WPA2. All three PCs are running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64-bit). The wireless PC has an internal 802.11n WiFi card and proximity to the router didn’t have any affect with the problem.
After I modified IGMP Proxy to Disabled and rebooted router (just to be safe), the problem was solved. I’ve monitored the situation for the past 2 days and both the wireless and wired PCs have been able to consistently see each other in Homegroup and Network. Connectivity has been consistent and file transfers have been working beautifully. Internet access and speed (using http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/) has not been affected on any PC.
A thought: The problem may have resulted from changing from WEP to WPA2. It’s been such a long time since that change including PC hardware changes, OS upgrades, additional hardware that uses WiFi, and other wireless items that could produce interference, I can’t be sure when the problem first occurred.
I can’t explain why it worked but changing IGMP Proxy to Disabled, in my circumstance, solved the problem.

  • How to manage iphone on two computers!

    Hello,
I have and iphone 3gs and i used in a windows xp pc
Yesterday the computer was not warking due to a BSoD (classic for windows)
So i have installed a windows 7 and i would like to manage my iphone from the new installation without loosing the data.
Also i bought a macbook pro win mac os x Lion and i would like to know if i will be able to manage my iphone from both computers
    best regards

You can sync photos and itunes content with one and only one computer at a time.  If you sync to another you will lose all itunes content and pics.
If you have contacts on the other computer then you could sync with that computer.  If the other computer is blank then so to will be the iphone after syncing

  • Why can I copy music to my iPad or iPod touch from multiple computers but from only one computer using my iPhone?

Why can I copy music to my iPad or iPod touch from multiple computers but from only one computer using my iPhone?
IPads and iPod Touches don't seem to have the same media copying restriction that my iPhone has. My main computer is at home. I have music at home and at work and sometimes I like to add it to my iPhone from work. I can do this no problem using my iPad or my iPod touch, but when it comes to my iPhone, I can only copy music to it from my main computer.
Why would the iPhone have this restriction but not the other two devices?
ps. Where's my "add currently playing song to playlist" button? I can't even find a third-party music app with this feature.

    Because...!
    I've no idea why either.
Although it isn't normally possible to sync an iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers (or manually manage an iPhone from more than one) it can be achieved if all computers have copies of the self same library. See Re: how do i sync on a second laptop without the data on my iPhone 5 being erased?
