Manage Cisco catalyst Switch 2948G.

My task is to manage Cisco 2948G switch using NMS.I am supposed to use CISCO-STACK-MIB.I just need the following hierarchy info of Cisco 2948g switch. Please tell me the number of components in each
Chassis
|-->Slot
|-->Module
|-->Port
As per my knowledge,it has 48 ports of "fixed configuration" and two ports with GBIC interface.how are they arranged ?if it is fixed configuartion ,then there is no modules, slots??
When i populate the data in CISCO-STACK-MIB,
1)Should the value of "portModuleIndex" in the MIB be "1" for all 50 ports??
2)Should the value of "portIndex" be 1,2,3...50 for the ports?
3)What should be the value of "moduleIndex"?
The following link deeals with it but not clear.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk648/tk362/technologies_tech_note09186a0080094a9a.shtml
Kindly load the CISCO-STACK-MIB available at ftp://ftp.cisco.com/pub/mibs/supportlists/wsc2948g/wsc2948g-supportlist.html
analyse and help me.

  • Cisco Catalyst switch

    Hi,
Can I know the answer for the following questions?
    1. What is the maximum MAC-address entry per Catalyst switch?
    2. Is there specific interval that I need to wait before issuing snmp polling to the switch after the LAN port turned into “green”?

    1. Depends on the Switch/Supervisor you have. For example Sup1/2 in a CAT6500 can have upto 128k MAC addresses
    http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/765/tools/quickreference/catalyst6000supervisors.pdf
4k Supervisors can have upto 32k
    http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/765/tools/quickreference/catalyst4000supervisors.pdf
    3750/3560 can have upto 12k
    http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/765/tools/quickreference/catalyst3x00.pdf
2.I am not an SNMP expert but would not think there would be any network delay other then the poll interval delay.

    Hello NetNavi.
Check the post above about MacSec for more information and let me know if you need further clarification, if so I will do my best,
In regards to best practices there is a Cisco document; it describes deployments and best practices in every scenario; Supplicants, authenticator, authentication services and other configurations. Please check it out:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/iosswrel/ps6537/ps6586/ps6638/deploy_guide_c17-663760.html
    In regards to Private VLANS:
    What is a Private Vlan?
A private Vlan is a way to isolate hosts within the same Vlan or broadcast domain. So even when you might have devices sharing the same broadcast domain they can be isolated, this isolated is configured based on sub-domains also most often called primary and secondary Vlans.
    What is a primary Vlan?
The primary Vlan is representation of the private Vlan, a primary Vlan has one or more secondary Vlans, a switch uses the primary Vlan to present traffic from the secondary Vlans to its neighboring devices.
    What is a secondary Vlan?
A secondary Vlan is a sub-domain of the primary Vlan. We could say that the secondary Vlans belongs to the primary. The must be associated to a primary Vlan. There are two types of secondary vlans: Isolated and Community secondary Vlans.
What does it happen to host within a secondary isolated Vlan?
Host within the isolated vlan; can’t communicate to neither other host in the same isoalted vlan nor host in a community vlan.
What does it happen to host within the secondary community Vlan?
Host within the community Vlan can communicate with other host assigned to the same community vlan, but they can’t talk to host in other community vlans.
What are the benefits of implementing private Vlans?
Scalability: The most common scenario is a service provider. Imagine all customers of a service provider connected through DSL, cable modem… it’s very likely that all customers belong to the same broadcast domain, however if that’s the case why is it that I can’t use my neighbor’s printer, or maybe why is it that I can’t access the files he has store in his computer, (security) we are in the same broadcast shouldn’t I be able to at least ping his ip address?. Well that’s because the ISP must guarantee some type of security for their customers, and because put every single customer that they have in a single Vlan is not scalable they use private Vlans.
    Examples:
ISP use private vlans to protect from security bridges, Private vlans and isolated Vlans are used to protect personal information for example from one customer to another.
DMZ; Many implementations utilizes private vlans in a DMZ to limt or minimize that risk of a compromised server.
I would like to share this documentation with you for further information and configuration guidelines

  • Cisco Catalyst 3560G 48, PSU

    Hi
I have several Cisco Catalyst switches 3560 / 3750 etc.
There is a connector for remote PSU in the back.
Is this an input for redundant power?
Where can I find the pin layout?

Sounds like you've found the connector for an external RPS.  I don't know if Cisco documents the pins, and the RPS might "talk" with switch, so more might be involved they providing some voltage on those pins.

  • Standard Catalyst switch vs. Enhanced routing version

I have question regarding the Cisco catalyst switches with the enhanced routing option.
As I understand it to do layer 3 routing between vlans on a standard catalyst switch IOS requires me to configure a port on the switch with 802.1Q, plug that port into a seprate router and configure the router's port (also configured with 802.1Q) as a 'router on a stick' for each vlan i need to route. Then any additional switches I want to add to the network I would simply trunk them back to the switch that has the router plugged in so i could have inter-vlan routing. Does this sound correct?
Now if I used a switch with the enhanced layer-3 IOS (A WS-C3560G-24TS-E for example) would i be able to remove the extra router from the design? would the packet routing go at the speed of the back-pane of the enhanced switch, rather than the wire-speed of the connection to a external router? I would also be able to get a gigabit SFP for each of my additional switches (3500XL's) and plug them into a trunked port on the 3560 thus giving a full gigabit trunk to each access layer switch.
Or would a router on a stick be a fine solution for inter-vlan routing? There will be a need for a integrated services router in the future to act as our CME for this site, so we will be purchasing a router anyways.

    Hi Friend,
If you have layer 3 switch with standard image then also you will be able to configure intervlan routing on layer 3 switch.
Enhance image on layer 3 switch will let you configure routing protocols like ospf, bgp and enhance qos features whih is not possible with standard images.
But just for intervlan routing any layer 3 switch like 3550,3560 will let you achieve inter vlan routing without using external router.
Have a look at this link for intervlan routing on layer 3 switch like 350/3560 switches

  • Why choose Cisco Catalyst WS-C2960-24TC-L Switch ?

As the new family of fixed-configuration standalone devices, Cisco 2960s series intelligent Ethernet Switches provide desktop 10/100 Fast Ethernet and 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity for entry-level enterprise, mid-market, and branch office networks
    to enable enhanced LAN services.
    Why choose cisco WS-C2960-24TC-L ?
The Cisco Catalyst WS-C2960-24TC-L has hardware enhancements for network managers, including configurations featuring dual-purpose (alternatively wired) uplinks for Gigabit Ethernet, allowing the network manager to use their Cisco switches as either a copper
    or a fiber uplink.

Agreed! WS-C2960-24TC-L has hardware enhancements for network managers, and if you want to buy it, here 3anetwork.com  64%

  • The difference of the IEEE802.1x Auth between Cisco Routers and Catalyst switches

    Hello
I am investigating the difference of the IEEE802.1x Auth between Routers and Switches.
Basically dot1x auth is availlable on Catalyst Switches. however if I want to check to
PortBased Multi-Auth , MAC address Auth and any certification Auth with this feature,
Is it possible to integrate into Cisco Router such as Cisco 891F ?
In my opinion Cisco891F is also available to use basic IEEE802.1x but if it compares with Catalyst switches such as Cat3560X
I think there might be any unsupported feature on Cisco 891F.
I appreciate any information. thank you very much in advance.
    Best Regards,
    Masanobu Hiyoshi

Many time in interviews asked comaprison between cisco  routers and switches that i was answerless bcoz i dont have much knowledge about that. Can anyone provide me the compariosin sheet of the same.how are the cisco devices differ with each other how much Bandwidth each routres support and Etc...
Ummmm ... The most common question I get is "what is the difference between a router and a switch".
However, if you get a question like this, then my impression to this line of questioning are:
    1.  The candidate they are looking for has in-depth knowledge of routers and switches.  And I mean IN-DEPTH!;
    2.  They are not looking for a candidate.  They just want to stroke their ego.  There is not alot of people who can give you the "names and numbers" of routers and switches at a snap of a finger.  And if you do happen to know the answer, then and there, then expect a tougher follow-up question.

  • Connection of LC/APC fiber patch cords to Cisco Catalyst 6500 $ Cisco Access 3750 Switches

I have an LC/APC fiber patch cord infrastructure and I want to connect it to Cisco Catalyst 6500 & Cisco Access 3750 Switches. what type of transceiver should be used?
I read a note on Cisco website stating the following for Cisco SFP+ transceivers:
Note: "Only connections with patch cords with PC or UPC connectors are supported. Patch cords with APC connectors are not supported. All cables and cable assemblies used must be compliant with the standards specified in the standards section"

Thank you,  but my question is that I have a single mode fiber patch cord with LC/APC connector while cisco stating a note that only use LC/PC or LC/UPC type of connectors with SFP+ transceiver.
So what type of transceiver should I use to connect LC/APC patch cord to cisco switches?  Is there another type or SFP+ still can be used?

  • Embeded Event Manager on cisco 3560 switch

Can someone help me please? I have EEM configured on cisco 3560 switch. The configuration is below. I want that switch inform me through email when device with particilular IP address become unavailable. For some reason this configuration is not good and I can't tell why. I already try to debug this with debug event manager action mail but didn't see any output .
    ip sla 11
    icmp-echo ip address
    frequency 20
ip sla schedule 11 life forever start-time now
    event manager applet device-TEST
    event snmp oid 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.42.1.2.9.1.6.11 get-type exact entry-op lt entry-val "2" poll-interval 20
    trigger occurs 5 period 120
action 02.0 mail server "ip address" to "[email protected]" from "[email protected]" subject "device is down"

The mail part looks good, I'm not sure you are hitting the trigger right.
Why not do a track on the ip sla instead of the snmp stuff?
Here's a good example of that.

  • Alternative switch to Cisco Catalyst 3750v2-24FS and 3750-24FS

I`m looking for an alternative to these two switches:
    1.  WS-C3750V2-24FS-S  Cisco Catalyst 3750V2-24FS Switch with 24 100FX SFP + 2 Gigabit Ethernet SFP Ports
    2. Cisco Catalyst 3750-24FS (WS-C3750-24FS-S 100BASE-FX)
They are now EOL and not available.
I have a campus style network and need to be able to connect multiple 100FX fibre switches back to a central switch. The 1st unit uses 100FX SFP modules and the second has in-built 100FX ports. I`m struggling to find anything from Cisco that will give me multiple (i.e 12+) 100FX ports.
Could anyone please point me in the right direction?
    Many thanks,

There aren't any public utilities in the Cisco website that provides you with a bug study.
We have a bug tracker https://tools.cisco.com/bugsearch/?referring_site=popular but it will be extremely time consuming to identify each bugs and if you are affected.
