Manage multiple Domain.sites files

Is there any cool utility to manage multiple iWeb Domain files ?
In .Mac, is that possible to publish the site Site_A based on one Domain file and to publish just after the site Site_B based on another Domain file ?

Multiple domain.sites files

Any reason I shouldn't rename my domain.sites file in order to create and work on another site? I could just rename the files when I switch back and forth. I'm building a site in exchange for lessons and don't really want to keep it around all the time..... plus I'll turn it over to them someday anyway. Good, bad, indifferent?

No problem with that. Rename each domain file to match the site name it contains. You can then put them both in the default location, your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder, and drag that folder into the Dock. When you want to open Site A click on that folder in the dock and select the A.sites2 file.

IWeb 1.1(.1) and multiple Domain.sites

There are (still) a lot of references to Domain.sites resides in ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder, this is no longer true with iWeb 1.1(.1).
iWeb 1.1(.1) can handle multiple Domain.sites, and once you double click a Domain.sites outside of ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder, ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder is no longer needed (unless you double click the Domain.sites inside ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder, again).
Once you double click a Domain.sites outside of ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder, you can move iWeb folder out of ~/Library/Application Support folder, and iWeb WON'T create another ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.

iWeb 1.1.x multiple domains handling is quite low
key, and for a good reason. Although, iWeb 1.1.x can
handle multiple Domain.sites, however, there is no
way (that I know of) to create a fresh Domain.sites
from iWeb.

Hmmmmm, I AM able to create a new Domain.sites file using iWeb 1.1.1; see this Apple support article:

I've got a number of different sites that I had been keeping in different folders in a new folder that I named "Sites" that I kept where the default Domain.sites file was stored, i.e.,
for "Site1": ~username/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Sites/Site1/Domain.sites
for "Site2": ~username/Library/Application Support/iWeb/Sites/Site2/Domain.sites
etc.
Prior to version 1.1.1, when I'd open one of the Domain.sites files, iWeb would automatically create a Domain.sites file in the ~username/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder, then when I was done making changes to that file, I'd have to copy it back into the subfolder. Now with version 1.1.1, iWeb does NOT create a new file but rather just uses the Domain.sites file from where it is opened and makes that the new default location. To create a new site, just move this folder containing the Domain.sites file that iWeb now uses as the default to a different location and start iWeb by clicking on the iWeb application: you'll then get a new site. If the last opened Domain.sites file was in the username/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder, then moved to a different location, and then you open iWeb by clicking on the iWeb application, you will be prompted to either "Quit", "Create Domain…", or "Choose Domain…"; click "Create Domain…" and you'll then be asked to choose a location for a new Domain file; select a new location then iWeb opens with a new site.

Retrieving damaged domain.sites file

My domain.sites file has been damaged and I can no longer access my blog pages. Does anybody know if there is any way to retrieve and rebuild them from either the i.disk or the .mac account?

If my guess is not wrong, I had the same problem and after "googleing" for long hours and reading barely all the post I basically will have to disappoint you. Apparently there is no solution. It seems to be some corruption with the index.xml.gz file and unless you are a hardcore programmer and manage to edit that file at "code-level" there is no human solution available for restoring that file...
Sorry for the bad news! But if you do find a solution, please post it!

How to move iWeb site with missing Domain.sites file

I've been asked to host a friend's iWeb site now that MobileMe is no longer an option. The problem is that the MacBook it was created with is long gone and the only original files remaining are the image files for the site. No Domain.sites file. They are also not sure which version of iWeb was used, if that even matters. Initially I was thinking we could just access the existing site using ftp and go from there - upload the site to my hosting account and use Dreamweaver to maintain it, but everything I've read seems to point to 'Not gonna happen that way'.
Is there a way to transfer an existing iWeb site hosted on MobileMe to a new hosting account and be able to work on it with another editor, all the while not having the original Domain.sites(2) file?

Quite a few people are moving to other drag and drop style editors like Sandvox and RapidWeaver although they aren't really any better - just more expensive.
I advise people not to use iWeb for new sites and just to keep it going to update existing ones until they are defunct or rebuilt some other way.
I quit using iWeb about a year ago due to the fact that it, and similar apps, can't create responsive designs for mobile devices although I did figure out a stop gap design for iPhones...

Domain.sites file

I've been poking through the discussions trying to solve my issue, https://discussions.apple.com/message/15079651#15079651, and have found that the domain.sites file should be in the library/applications support/iWeb folder.
My new/additional problem is I have no iWeb support folder. I looked through my Time Machine backups all the way back to December of last year and have no folder. There is also no file named domain.sites anywhere in the backup.
Any ideas on why not? Also, any ideas on how I can get iWeb to start working again would be a big help.

To be more precise, the file should be in :
~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/
folder (note the uppper/lowercase characters and the missing s in Applications) where ~ is your Home directory.
If you copy that line and do Command-Shift-G in the Finder, paste the line and hit Return, you'll end in the iWeb folder where the Domain.sites2 file should be.
Whether or not the file is backup'ed is another matter.

Create and manage multiple web sites using iWeb and GoDaddy

Now that Mobile Me is going away and the other comments in this discussion relate to iwebsites were written several years ago, I am looking for new and up-to-date information.
I have been building and maintaining a website using my MobileMe account and porting it over to GoDaddy.
I need to re-write the site if for no other reason than it is getting cluttered and needs freshining.
I would also like to create some other seperate web sites with their own URL
1) Is iWeb capable of doing this?
2) All the information I have found on iWebsites is at least 3 years old and there does not seem to be updates to that software.
3) Are there other tools that will allow me to do this?
And finally, does the group have any words of wisdom for me.

It is now generally acknowledged that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
◼ Password protection
◼ Blog and photo comments
◼ Blog search
◼ Hit counter
◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken. If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows. Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.

However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone. How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For opening your domain file in Lion for the first time or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
Just launch the applicaiton, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.

I have multiple "domain".sites2 files.

I built a few simple sites maybe 5-6 years ago, and was unconfortable with keeping them in one iWeb arvhive. So I figured out a way to save and open sites from muliple archives. Now, when I try to open a "old" iWeb archive only the most recently created opens, and not the "old". Back then I figured out a solution to this - but I don't recall what it was and everything I tried does not help. Happy for any hints.

The following is my take on the issue. My app, iWeb Switch Domain, is the same as Roddy's app. They are the same script but with a different name.
Note the warning at the end of my post below. If you're not careful you could lose a domain file.

Keeping multiple domain.sites on the same computer

Based on reading the help info, it seemed that if I had several domain.sites in DIFFERENT folders, I could open them separately and thus keep several different sites on the same computer (which I want to do to keep my student's work). However this doesn't seem to work. Even if I rename the "main site" (in application support) something else, like domainX.site, the copy domain.site which I have on my desktop (or in another folder) remains in sync. It doesn't matter which I change, they both remain the same. So I do not see how I can do what I need to do . . . any suggetions? I am using iweb 06

Select the domain file hit command(Apple)+d
The two domain files (domain.sites and domain copy.sites) are completely independent from each other.
To edit one of the two simply double click it.
If you duplicated the domain files (command(apple+d)) changes to one will not apply to the other.

Using BC to manage multiple client sites

Hi,
I'm a freelance designer who has recently started delving into the world of web design due to the high demand from my clients!
I am very interested in the Muse and BC software packages from Adobe and like the way that they interact with eachother to enable more interactive features on websites.
I am really struggling to get my head around how BC works though?? As mentioned before I have multiple clients that have recently asked me to create/redesign their webistes for them and all of my clients have asked for feature rich websites that either allow them to update certain pages themselves (news pages, menu pages etc.) and add in features that allow for e-commerce/shopping carts.
I know that combining both Muse and BC will allow me to achieve all of these features but I need to know how I can get BC to manage all of the sites.
Do I only need a copy of BC myself so I can manage all of the sites in one place or will I need to set up an account for each seperate site and log into each one to manage the modules etc.?
My ideal scenario would be as follows:
I have a copy of BC on my machine that I can use to set up each site and manage it. I can then give each individual client login details for their site so they can add/amend content on specific pages that I unlock for them. The clients login details also give them access to the site analytics, create e-shots, update the e-commerce side of the site.
Each client would then pay the relevant monthly subscription to host their site on BC depending on what level of interactivity they require.
As I said, I'm struggling to work out how BC works in terms of managing multiple sites so any suggestions/guidance would be great!

Hi Dan,
Firstly you need to understand Muse in the scope of website design & development and also with it and BC.
Muse is a means for graphic designers to step into the web would and get them going. Its concept as a point and click interface, while built very well from a good team by its very nature is only a stepping stone and basic.
With that and how it works with BC as well it is only the lower end of what you can do with it and BC. So proper implemented eCommerce etc you simply can not create properly and use and utlise other BC features.
It does not teach you the javascript etc you need to take a full on BC site to where it needs to be.
Also while it has been improved the way you develop in Muse and then clients updating content via the admin (as they should being a CMS) it is not the smoothest affair.
With your next part of your post - To manage many clinets in BC you should look to become a partner. You have access to the partner portal and can manage client sites more easily and access some cool tools to help and aid with that. You get a free partner site for yourself you can use as your business site.

Trying to transfer, can't find domain.sites file

I'm using iWeb '08 and have read some of the forums about how to transfer sites. Trying to design a site for my sister. I've read some of the other questions on this topic and people say to transfter domain.sites or domain.sites2 file. I can't find either. Someone explained it was in the library/application support/iweb folder. Well that folder doesn't even exist on my computer. Any help is appreciated.

Make sure you're looking in the right Library folder. It's the one in your home directory, not at the root level of the boot drive: User/Library/Application Support/iWeb.

BranchCache - multiple domains and file permissions

I have been researching BranchCache and looking into its feasibility given my requirements and constraints.
I am considering replacing servers in branch offices with a single BranchCache server [per branch] in 'hosted' mode.
1. It has been suggested that each hosting server can only host files from content servers in the same domain as the caching/hosting server. Is this correct? For jurisdictional purposes, we have a 'shared, global' forest but also 'local, jurisdictional'
forests. Each branch needs to access data which resides in either/several/all of these forests.
2. A simpler but related question - how are file permissions adhered to? Are the NTFS perms simply included as metadata? How does the hosting server authorise the requesting client access to the file at the point of request? Does the content server provide
the authorisation instead and hence client and content server must be in the same domain?
I'm keen to pursue this technology further but suspect it has limitations which mean it is not feasible within my environment.

I forwarded your questions to the BranchCache team, and this is their response:
"All of the entities in the BranchCache system can be on different domains and BranchCache will work just fine. It’s ok to have content servers and hosted cache servers on different domains or on no domain at all. The client and server
just need to be able to communicate to get BranchCache working.
"As far as permissions go, clients in the branch office need to be able to download hashes from the remote file/web server to use BranchCache. The file or web server authenticates and authorizes the client using whatever means it would if BranchCache
were not in the picture. Once the client is granted permission, it can retrieve the hashes and pull from the local cache. Permissions are not embedded in the hashes. Ownership of the hashes is all a client needs to download from the cache.
Hashes are a substitute for content and are kept secure the same way content is."

Can I change where iweb looks for it's domain.sites file?

Even simpler than that....read the Apple bulletin...it's a good summary.
Basically if you move your domain file to another location, all you have to do is double-click on it to launch iWeb. From that moment on, iWeb will remember the location of this "default" domain file, until either you move it or you "bless" another domain file as the default by the same method.

Accessing domain.sites file from idisk

Hi, all! Merry X-mas!
I just got a new MacBook (yay!) and I would like to work on my various websites. However, my desktop with my files on it is 3,000 miles away. Is there a way to open iweb on my new computer and access my various domains here using my idisk?

If you had copied your Domain files to your iDisk, you could download them to your new laptop and open them with the iWeb application. Beyond that, unless you know a way to hack into the system on your desktop machine...
I keep mine (Domains) on a usb thumb drive that I always carry with my laptop. You can even click on them straight from the drive and iWeb will open them for editing and publishing.

Multiple Domain files, Multiple Sites, Publishing Problems

I am frustrated beyond belief. I'm an old hand-coder, coming from BBEdit, but I've been using iWeb almost exclusively since its release, because it really is a great product for quick, easy, stylish designs.
However.... In that year, my collection of sites has grown to 12. Discovering that iWeb becomes a major dog when dealing with that much material, I found and followed the instructions - today - to separate my sites into individual domain files, and edit them individually. iWeb is much snappier and publishing goes much more quickly.
The problem? Well... after editing, "Publish to .Mac" rarely works. Only "Publish All to .Mac" will get the site online (something about an error with the index.html file). But "Publish All to .Mac", I've just discovered, DELETES the other websites that I have previous published. All day I've been doing updates and publishing my sites, only to discover that the uploads have all been wiped out by the most recent one!
I'm a big enough fellow to admit that my knowledge isn't total nor perfect - so please, would someone out there with a better handle on iWeb than I (preferably someone who actually deals with multiple domain files rather than someone who thinks they can guess the problem) please clue me into how we make use of this program non-destructively?
I suppose I could always publish everything to folders and upload it to my iDisk (which itself remains ridiculously slow after how many years now? Sheesh!), but that detracts from the elegance of the .Mac integration, the counter features, - not to mention the little fact that I'm a paying .Mac customer and this darn thing should just work, no?

I was where you were also. You should give iWebSites a try. It's to iWeb what iPhoto Library Manager is to iPhoto.
I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want. Just remember to put a copy of your current Domain.sites file somewhere else on your HD in case the splitting gets messed up. It went very smoothly for me and I now manage 19 or so sites.
