Manage Server 2012 Backups from Windows 8.1

Hello,
I am trying to find out if it is possible to manage server 2012 backups from a windows 8.1 workstation via GUI or is the CLI the only option?
I found a few articles online that mention to use a computer management console > storage > backup (but from what I know it only works if you're connecting from a 2012 server itself)
Thank you in advance!

Hi,
We cannot manage server 2012 backups from a windows 8.1 workstation. Ye may need to use Remote Desktop Connection to access server 2012 from windows 8.1 workstation. In additional, we could manage server 2012 essential backups using dashboard on Windows
8.1 workstation.

  • Cannot browse to Server 2012 shares from Windows 8.x

I can't conntect or browse to any shares on a 2012 server from a Windows 8.1 client. I can connect from Windows 7 to server 2012. And from Windows 8.1 I can connect to 2008 servers. Is this a new security feature/setting on Windows 8.1 or on Server 2012?

    Hi Spetroski,
Based on your description, I’m a little confused with your question. Please let me confirm something more.
Is it in a domain environment? Did you mean you type the share path in
Run, and then access share? If so, please check if use server’s IP address to access, will the same result?
If I misunderstood the connection way, please don’t hesitate to let me know.
Please confirm which following scenario is similar with current state of this issue.
When use Windows 8.1, you can connect to server 2012. However, can’t browse and access all shares that host in server 2012.
Can’t even connect to server 2012, when use Windows 8.1.
If none, please feel free to let me know some details.
Meanwhile, please let me know if you can find some error message when this issue occurred. If can find, please
post the complete error messages here.
    Hope this helps.

  • SQL Server 2012 Express on Window 8.1 64 bit version?

    Hi,
I´m trying to install SQL Server 2012 Express on Windows 8.1 64 bit version. When I reach the point of "Installing Setup Files", of the installation process, the installation seems to halt. I´ve tried both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of SQL 2012
Express. I´ve installed SQL 2012 Express several times before on other Windows versions but I´ve never encountered this problem. Is it a known SQL Server 2012 Express/Windows 8.1 64 bit compability problem?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Server 2012 vs. Windows 7 / 8. What should a newbie choose?

    Hi there!
Am here with a newbie question. Ive been running a Windows Home Server 2003 for several years, and learned alot had great use of it. But the hardware got old, and I wanted to buy a new server.
So, right now I am running my new server with Windows Server 2012 trail, and I've had quite alot of difficulties. So after getting stuck with a Certificate Autority-something, am starting to really wonder if I'd rather should use Windows 7 or 8 to run my
server. Then I dont have to understand all the extra stuff comming with the server edition, but the reason I have this is also to learn how to setup a server.
What should I do? Everyone I know who's interested in server-management is using Linux, and am allways getting stuck with hours of googling, doing stuff that learn a bunch of, but takes me way too much time.
I really wanna learn, but am getting a little fed up with getting stuck all the time.
Just to mention it, am using my server mainly for http, php, mysql and ftp service, running file-sharing over my network, and stuff like that, but really enjoy the more advanced features I had on the server 2003 that I could experiment with.
    What do you think?

    Hi atomprompen,
Besides the suggestion of using Windows 8 Professional, you may also consider to use Windows Server 2012 Essentials.
Windows Server 2012 Essentials is the latest version of Windows Small Business Server. Windows Server 2012 Essentials is a flexible, affordable, and easy-to-use server solution designed and priced for small businesses with up to 25 uses and 50 devices that
helps them reduce costs and be more productive.
Also, Windows Home Server has seen its greatest success in small office/home office (SOHO) environments and among the technology enthusiast community. For this reason, Microsoft is combining the features that were previously only found in Windows
Home Server, such as support for DLNA-compliant devices and media streaming, into
Windows Server 2012 Essentials and focusing our efforts into making Windows Server 2012 Essentials the ideal first server operating system for both small business and home use—offering an intuitive administration experience, elastic and resilient
storage features with Storage Spaces, and robust data protection for the server and client computers.
For more details, please refer to
    Windows Server 2012 Essentials FAQ.
    We can also download
Windows Server 2012 Essentials trial to evaluate it.

  • RMAN Backup from windows to Linux

    Hi,
I am having Windows 2003 server Oracle 10.2
    and I have RHEL5 and Oracle 10.2
I have taken a RMAN Oracle Database Backup from windows..
I have installed oracle software on RHEL5 and now i need to restore this backup to the Linux
it is possible to restore it? if possible can any one let me know the process?
    Regards,
    Vijayaraghavan K

    I have another doubt
I took RMAN full DB Backup - it comes around 2.5 G (performed on time 9.00 A.M morning)
When i perform differential incremental backup it comes around 2.6 G (performed on time 9.45 A.M )
Why it is coming like this.. The backup should happen only for the changed blocks alone?? i.e it should come around 10 Mb or 20 Mb?? Why is like this? or my understanding of differential backup is wrong?
I issued the below commands for Full DB Backup and Incremental Backup...
FULL DB backup at 9.00 A.M
    RMAN> BACKUP INCREMENTAL LEVEL 0 DATABASE;
    Differentail Backup a 9.45 A.M
    RMAN> BACKUP INCREMENTAL LEVEL 1 DATABASE;

    hello again,
meanwhile I was lucky to find this article about Idenity Mapping in TechNet in the Storage Team Blog:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2012/10/09/nfs-identity-mapping-in-windows-server-2012.aspx
Likely to be overseen at the end of one paragraph it says:
"Client for NFS does not support NFS V4.1 in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012"
Question : Is this an official statement and is it still valid with most recent
Windows Server 2012 R2 that NFS client does NOT support NFSv4.x  ??

  • SharePoint 2013 Server OS upgrade from Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2

Is it possible to have SharePoint 2013 farm to have mixed version of OS (Windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 R2).
We have a request to upgrade our farm servers from WIN 2008 R2 to Win 2012 R2. We have 5 servers in farm -
2 App servers - running with Central Admin, Service Applications, User Profile
3 Web Front End Servers- running web application, search and workflow manager
the database layer is separate on sql 2012 R2
We want to upgrade OS from windows 2008 R2 to windows 2012 R2 and SQL to SQL 2014.
What will be right approach to do OS upgrade in above scenario to minimize the impact of downtime.
May be add windows 2012 based servers in farm one by one and replace the windows 2008 R2 based servers from server.
    Regards,
    Kunal Abrol

Its possible, but I wouldn't recommend it.  The problem is that you can only install SharePoint 20103 on Windows Server 2012 r2 using the slipstreamed SP1 version.  I assume that you used the regular version to install on you Server 2008 r2 versions.
Even if you upgrade those servers to SP1 there are some minor differences in the builds between slipstreamed SP1 and upgraded SP1.  So although it will work it isn't recommended.
Also, you should be aware the upgrade of inplace SharePoint servers running Windows 2008 r2 to Windows 2012 r2 is not supported.
To upgrade to server 2012 you'll need to add 2012 servers to your environment using the slipstreamed version os SharePoint and then remove the old server 2008 r2 servers as soon as possible.  For the period of the upgrade you should be able to get away
with running the farm in a mixed state.

  • Unable to do Bare Metal Restore on Windows Server 2008R2 Backup from USB Seagate Backup Plus Harddrive

I have done a windows full server backup on to an external Seagate HDD on a Dell PowerEdge T110 II Server running Windows Server 2008 R2
I want to clone this and do a Bare Metal Restore on an identical server at home which has Windows Server 2008 R2 on it.
I boot from the Windows DVD provided, select repair however windows Server 2008 R2 will not find the image of the Seagate drive. The Seagate drive can be seen on the server otherwise. I guess there are options to load the driver, but I don't see them.
Please help. Kind of stuck here
    Thanks

I am using a windows server 2008R2 disk to boot up. Both the servers have windows server 2008R2 on them. I have two licenses for each of the servers. I want to use the server at home as a backup server in case the server in office  goes down. I used
windows server backup to backup the server at work to a portable USB hard drive. I bought the hard drive home and want to clone the server at work. I heard bare metal restore is the best way to do this. So I booted the server at home with the windows server
2008 r2 disk that I have and clicked repair. I had attached my seagate portable drive to the usb port so that the server could find the image of the server at work, however the server cant find the hard drive or the server image. Is it a problem with my usb
hard drive? Do I need a specific type of usb hard drive to do server image backups?
If I let my server at home boot regularly and it comes up, it can see the image on the hard drive so I dont know how to do the bare metal restore. I know it can be done becuase my IT guy did it when he set up both the servers. I just want to periodically
clone them so make sure the server at home is updated with the settings of the server at work.
    Thanks for any help here

I want to know, how can I restore a bare metal or system state backup to another machine, to have a domain controller same as old one whit all the properties, rules and features.

    Hi Mehdi,
Yes, it is possible to restore Windows backup to a different machine with different hardware. This article, although written for Windows Server 2008 still applies in 2012:

  • Windows server 2012: migration from 2012 standard evaluation version to 2012R2

    Hello.
    Is it possible то migrate
FROM: windows server 2012 standard evaluation
    TO: windows server 2012R2 standard
And if it is possible then "how to"?
Activation product key for 2012 is NOT available.
Activation product key (MAK, "open licence") for 2012R2 is available.
The key for 2012R2 does not "open" 2012 evaluation version.
    Thanks.

Upgrade means moving from your existing operating system release to a more recent release, while staying on the same hardware. For example, if your server is running Windows Server 2012, you can upgrade it to Windows Server 2012 R2. You
can upgrade from an evaluation version of the operating system to a retail version, from an older retail version to a newer version, or, in some cases, from a volume-licensed edition of the operating system to an ordinary retail edition.

  • SSMS for SQL Server 2012 Express on Windows Embedded 8 Standard

    Hello,
I have installed SQL Server 2012 Express with Advanced Tools (SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe, downloaded from MS website) on Windows Embedded 8 Standard 64-bit. But, when I try to find SQL Server Management Studio, I realized it's not installed (same installation

  • Daily Server 2012 backups to different drives

We have a Windows 2012 server that runs AD and Hyper-V with 2 VMs. Total disk space is 2TB. We have 5x 2TB USB disks that are rotated daily from Monday to Friday. Currently I have a scheduled task that fires off a batch file with the following in it:
wbadmin start backup -allcritical -systemstate -include:"c:" -backuptarget:E: -vssfull -quiet
WSB backup performance is currently set to "Normal backup performance".
The reason I went this route is because I had issues trying to get WSB to use all 5 drives in rotation through the GUI. Connecting all 5 drives at the same time when setting up the backup is just not feasible.
When I initially configured the backup it ran fine for the first 2 weeks whereby the backups would take about 16 hours to finish which was fine (starting at 6pm and finishing around 10am the next day). For some reason now the backups are taking around 26 hours
to finish which I don't understand as the size of the data hasn't changed much.
I have now changed the performance to "Faster backup performance" but I'm not sure if it will work with the drives being changed daily as the comparison of say Monday's snapshot on the server will be different to the backed up data on Tuesday's drive.
Or alternatively, if the comparison of changes is only done on the server and the differences are copied across, will it cause issues when trying to restore the backup?
Basically what I need to achieve is:
    - The RPO is 1 day so that in the event of catastrophic failure we need to be able to restore the server completely to the previous day (obviously within reason of when the catastrophe occurred).
    - We need 5 days worth of backups from Monday to Friday.
    - Each drive is swapped out daily to be taken off site.
If I need to look at doing a full backup every weekend and leaving a single drive connected for the week for "incrementals" then I can discuss that with the managers but that would change the RPO to the previous week instead of the previous day if
the building burns down for example.

Thanks for the feedback PrashKom. What difference will leaving out -backuptarget make? From what I can see at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc742083.aspx it is required to have that switch.
Changing the backup performance doesn't seem to have made any difference in terms of the speed it takes as it is only on 68% complete 13 hours after starting.
Do you think there will be any difference in changing from wbadmin start backup using task scheduler, to using wbadmin enable backup? I see in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc742130.aspx that they have "wbadmin enable backup –addtarget:H:"
but from my understanding is that setting the schedule will remove the drive letter and rename the drive like it does in the GUI.
