Manage users in mailing list

Hi,
I have a few groups/mailing list in ou=groups under root suffix. Now i need to create an admin just to edit/modify these users which are belongs to these groups. How do i it?

Messaging Server 5.2 came with iPlanet Delegated Admin, which is the tool suggested for managing users and groups.
Three years ago, when this product was introduced, nobody really thought about having a limited admin to do what you're asking.
You can certainly achieve what you're looking for, in the current product, though there's no GUI for managing groups/lists.

  • End User's mailing list administration

    Hi,
I have a customer who has just migrated from iMS 5 to newest JES05Q4. Everything seems to be OK except one thing: In iMS 5 end users were able to use Delegated Admin to manage their mailing lists. In 05Q4, Delegated Admin does not allow end users to login. Is this a configuration issue, or is that function removed from the newest Delegated Admin? What is the recommended way for web-based mailing list manipulations?

Yeah, that's gone from the current DA. We're hoping to get better stuff into JES5, due out sometime around the end of the year.

  • Managing a mailing list in numbers. Duplicate Entries?

    Hi Everyone-
I'm a newbie to these forums, and have done a brief search but didnt seem to find anything relevant, but if anyone can point me in the right direction, I would be most grateful.
I have been using Numbers to manage a large mailing list of around 10-15 thousand names for promotional mailings for my small business. When I receive updated lists, new contacts are simply added to the old ones, and I am trying to figure out how to extract only the updated contacts and append the relevant ones to my existing list. Does that make any sense?
Is there any way I can compare the two documents and have numbers delete names that exist in one document? Or even if I pasted the new list into my modified one, is there a way to tag and delete duplicates?
Thanks in advance for any help!

There are ways to do this in Numbers, but not simply. At this point there is no method to electronically compare two spreadsheets in numbers. The method I have in mind requires using a formula using an "IF" statement to mark suspect records, but still requires you to visually check that the record is actually a duplicate and not two people with the same name. This formula only looks at the Last name of the entry.
Databases, and even Address Book with Applescript or Automator actions, are frankly better suited to finding and purging duplicates than a spreadsheet. At least until Numbers becomes scriptable.
Anyway, let's say the last name of the entries are contained in Column B and you have a blank Column A named "dupes". If you don't, create one. . Sort the list by the Last Name.
Enter this formula in cell A2 and copy it down to the last row:
    =if(B2=B1,"x","")
Substitute the correct column letter for B in the formula. This formula says "Compare the last name in this row to the last name directly above it. If they are the same, put an "X" in this spot. If not, leave this spot empty."
You can now copy all of column A and use Edit>Paste Values to paste Column A back into itself to get rid of the formula and leave the "x's" or you can modify the formula to compare items in another column. Be sure to sort the records by the column values you are comparing.
From here you can scroll down the list using the "x's" as visual markers to stop and compare the entries to see if they actually are duplicates. This will preserve your sanity a little since you won't have to do a line-by-line visual comparison.
If you really trust the results, after you've used "Paste Values" to get rid of the formulas, you can sort on the "dupes" column (column A in this example) in 'Descending' order to bring all the "x's" to the top, select them all and delete the buggers.
    Good luck,
    Terry

  • Problem creating mailing list with Server Console

    Hi,
when I create a new mailing list, I do the following:
    1. Right click on groups folder in Console
    2. Choose New->Group
    3. Entering all data and checking "Mail Account" under Account
The documentation sais, that a Mail-tab should now appear. But this is not the case for me!?
I can only create the group like this and have to add the attribute "mail" - to enter an email address - manually..
Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong or missing something? Also disallowing posting on this group can only be set manually. Shouldnt all this be done using a nice GUI dialog?
I'm using Directory Server 5.2 Patch 2. Also tried 5.2 Patch 4. Both same problem.
    Thanks in advance

got the instructions from the "Sun Java System Messaging Server 6 2005Q4 Administration Guide", chapter "Managing Mail Users and Mailing Lists with the Console Interface"-"Managing Mailing Lists":
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-2650/6n4u4du0e?q=messaging+server&s=t&a=view
Step 6 sais: "Click the Mail Account box. -> The Mail tab becomes visible in the Create Group window."

  • Group Mailing Lists and Email Addresses

    Howdy All,
    A couple of quick questions:
    1. When a Group mailing list is created does this create an equivalent Mailman mailing list (i.e. that would appear at the Mailman list URL)? I'm not so much concerned as to whether Groups uses Mailman behind the scenes just whether or not one could "further" admin the group mailing list through the admin interface.
    2. What happens when you have a username "x", a group name "x" (which I commonly used on other Unixes) with a mailing list (implictly named "x"), and a Mailman mailing list named "x" (what was created as a Mailman mailing list in Server Admin) and then you email x@serverDNSname? Because I often use the same user and groups names this could be quite common.
Thanks for any thoughts on these puzzles.
    Cheers,
    Ashley.

I am beginning to suspect a combination problem- i.e. bad converter and bad Admin Tools.
The 10.6 Mail Admin manual states that:
+In Workgroup Manager, enable the Mailing List service for each group you want to have a mailing list address.+
+The setting is located in the Basic group options in Workgroup Manager.+
However, I no longer have these options in Admin Tools. I had them in 10.5.8, but not in 10.6 or 10.62 tools. I took a screenshot of the basic tab in WM:
    Image: !http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t69/dunkelza/Screenshot2010-01-08at81609AM. jpg!
I checked the About Workgroup Manager menu item and got "Version 10.6.2 (361.2.1)"
So it appears that the update to 10.6 not only failed to convert the LDAP settings correctly and/or map them to the mail system; but, that the update also removed my ability to see this and fix it through the GUI.

  • Regarding creating a Mail List Manager  ..pls suggest

    Hi,
I am trying to create a very primitive Mailing List Manager for general usage. I am facing a few issues and would be greatful if i could get them clarified.
1.I requier a smtp server that will create group accounts, i tried using a few mail servers but they require creating of accounts manually by the admin, is there any mail server that you can suggest that will allow creating user accounts (actually group accounts) and these accounts can be created thru a java program.
2.I searched the Java Mail API but could not find any methods that will allow me to create a user account/mailbox in the smtp server i am using.I am using a very primitive smtp server called " OpMail ".
3.To create this list manager do i require something called JMS, or will mail API only suffice.

1 & 2) I don't know of any mail servers that allow you to create users without admin access.
    3) JMS is something else entirely. The Mail API is all you should need.

  • After changing a mail list name in Server end, users can't see the update in outlook client

    Dear all,
This is a real issue. I am a Help-desk in a global company and after changing a mail list name in Server end, users can't see the update in outlook client. Even I download Offline address book in full detail, user still can't see the change in her outlook.
Does anyone know how to fix it?
    Thanks,
    Franklin hong

    Hi,
Would you please detail what you did by "changing a mail list name in Server end"? What is the mail list and what server?
If you switch to Online Mode instead of Cached Exchange Mode, does the user see the change?

  • Delete Ghost Mailing List User (Mailman Config Bug)

I recently did something stupid. On the up side, I recognized that it was stupid right after I did it, but unfortunately my effort to undo what I did wasn't fast enough to correct the following issue. First, here's what I did:
I added a new group with the same name as an existing user.
Immediately after thinking about it and determining that this was probably a really bad idea, I deleted the group.
I thought everything was working fine until I realized that email was not coming in to the email address of the aforementioned user (the user that I had created a group of the same name)
Fortunately, I figured out the problem and a temporary fix. The purpose of this post is two fold: first, to submit what I believe is a bug, and secondly to figure out a way to permanently fix this issue on my system.
I have determined what happened on my system is this:
a mailing list group of the same name as my existing user was created thus diverting mail from that user to a now non-existant mailing list user. That results in the List Server Log reading the following when an email is sent to the user in question:
    list_server_post[16378] <Error>: missing list GUID
Here's what I believe is a BUG: OS X Server 4.0 did not delete the mailing list group when I deleted the group. Now that's probably understandable because it's probably a protection against also deleting my user of the same name as a precaution, but it's not the expected behavior nonetheless.
Here's where I need help: In searching through various config files, I've determined that there entries located in /Library/Server/Mail/config/listserver/prefs which correspond to various lists (including my ghost list). I've also determined that /Library/Server/Mail/Data/listserver/aliases contains the references to the list that postfix uses to handle delivery. Unfortunately, according to the contents of /Library/Server/Mail/Data/listserver/aliases/list_server_virtual these files are generated "automatically" so deleting them does not rectify the problem. My assumption is that these files are generated from Open Directory, but for the life of me, I can't figure out what entry. In any case, I need assistance deleting the entry which should no longer be present. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
In the meantime, I have successfully worked around this problem by issuing:
    sudo  /Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/sbin/serverctl disable  service=com.apple.list_server_mgr
which, of course, disables the list server (which I don't need), but I'm afraid it will be re-enabled if I restart (maybe I'm wrong about that, but I'd prefer to get to the root of the problem so it doesn't pop back up and bite me in the future).
    Thanks in advance!

Where would the error be sent? If you send it back to the originator, you
disclose membership of the list. You can, however, configure the list
to have an address to which DSNs and NDNs are directed so that the
list maintainer (or whomever) can be alerted to these issues. This
is done with the mgrpErrorsTo LDAP attribute associated with the list
description. (I myself do not know how to set that via iDA.)
FWIW, there's a public mailing list for iMS issues. That mailing list is
read and responded to by many of the iMS engineers. It's
[email protected] Anyone can post to it; it's an unmoderated
list. You can subscribe by sending a message to [email protected] In the message place the single line

  • Mail List Management

    Hi,
    Running JES2005q4
Does the messaging software allow for self subscribing and unsubscribing mail lists (groups) and if so, where would I find the docs on how to do this. I would like to build some lists that users are able to subscribe to and also unsubscribe without the need of a manger to do this for them. I am not aware that this was possible, but have recently heard that it might be.
    Thoughts?
    Darren

At present, there is no mechanism to do what you're looking for. It's on the map, but I can't tell when we might get something like that.

  • User e-mail address in 2 mailing lists

I have a question from a customer i had no idea.
if a persons email address is in 2 mailing lists do they get the e-newsletter twice if the customer sends the e-newsletter to both lists.

    Hi Paul,
If the contact is in both lists selected to send the newsletter out to the system will recognize the duplicate and will only send a single e-mail in this case.
    Kind regards,

  • Mailing list problem. Users added in mgrpAllowedBroadcaster cant send email

    Hi,
I have problem with making some new mailing list and updating some old ones.
I made a list named [email protected] and i wanted only specific senders to be able to send to the list so i added them in mgrpAllowedBroadcaster attribute in the Directory Server.
When i sent email from my pc (my email adress included in mgrpAllowedBroadcaster) with a mail client to the list i got
    Delivery Notification: Delivery has failed
Your message cannot be delivered to the following recipients:
    Recipient address: [email protected]
Reason: you are not allowed to use this list: [email protected]
If i use webmail (Messanger express) the message gets normaly delivered to all the members of the list.
The webmail is on the same machine with the Messaging Server that has the mailboxes so its a local delivery.
I have 3 mail servers in my configuration. Outgoing mail server with sendmail (out.mydoman.com) , an spam/antivirus box (spam.mydomain.com) and the messaging server (pop.mydomain.com).
The delivery failure for the list was always sent by the messaging server.
I tried contacting each of my servers with telnet on port 25 and send an email to the list.
If i contacted the outgoing mail server the message was not delivered to the list and i got the same error as with the mail client on my PC.
(email goes to outgoing --> spam box --> messaging server)
If i contacted the spam/antivirus box then the message was delivered normaly to the recipients in the list
If i contacted the Message store box then its was normaly delivered.
I added a gmail account to the mgrpAllowedBroadcaster and when i sent email from it the message was delivered normaly to the list.
I get no error when i try
./imsimta test -rewrite [email protected] [email protected]

  • Trouble with an internet mail program for managed user

Not sure if I am posting this question in the right section.
I have a new imac, and kids are managed users. I put some parental controls on them I picked and chose with all the various choices.
They have a login website through their school where they can send and receive emails only with other students and teachers.
Its not working on their managed accounts. It DOES work under my administrator account, or a "test" user, an unmanaged account. The browser used is Firefox 3.0.4.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?
    Taffers

That sounds like a problem with the browser you're using. It may be that the browser must run from within the user's account and not your admin account. Try making a copy of the browser and placing it in the user's Applications folder - /Users/sonsuserfolder/Applications/. If there isn't an Applications folder there then make a new folder and name it Applications. Put the browser copy in that folder. Now log into the account and run the browser from his Applications folder rather than the system's.
Have you tried using Safari instead of Firefox? Is it possible that the school's system is not intended to be accessed from another network, thus it generates that error message because it will not accept an outside access. Or you may need to find out from the school how to access their network from home.

  • Mailing list set-up in OS X Server.

    Dear members:
I have been looking at different options for setting up a few mailing list groups. One of the best options I have found in terms of functionality and features is Listserv software but it is very expensive and is only available in a Unix version (no OS X available) which would require me to install it using terminal.
Two other options are DirectMail and OS X Server. According to the info page on Apple's web site setting up a mailing list in OS X Snow Leopard Server is a fairly simple thing to do. At least that is what they say.
According to your experiences how simple is it to set up a few mailing lists in OS X ? Please consider that I am an advanced user but without any advanced training in networking or programming.
    Thank you in advance,
    JRC

i have now resolved all my issues with the mail list functions on SL... and i am pretty confused as to why it is done like it is now. done... BUT... there are now TWO ways of creating lists in SL 10.6
1, the mailman way, which is a proper mail list server and can be relied on and has sensible mail handling and bounce control and aparantly no longer linked to workgroup manager or OD
2, the apple-wiki tool which uses a postfix alias populated with a group membership on creation.
SO... if you need a group that is linked to a OD group and you do not mind the complete lack of management and the fact that the mailing list will be called [email protected] then use mailing lists linked to wiki...
    OR
Use mailman... 10.6 has now removed the link between groups and mailman lists.. and you will soon loose the workgroup manager control (that no longer works) for integration with mailman lists... if you use mailman you have an industrial strength mailing list tool that you can sync with various other DB sources (inc LDAP) and has sensible bounce and mail handling...
it took me a while yesterday to finally realise what has really changed and what i need to do to work as normal.
My plan is to create a group in workgroup manager called "Mailing Lists" and then with a perl script interrogate OD for groups that are in my "Master mailing list group" and then sync the OD group user list emails with the list of the same name (as any group in the OD group "mailing lists") in MailMan.... which will give me OD managed group mailing lists again and also give me [email protected] for my list name...
i object to have to call a mailing list with a "-wiki" extension to the name, and i would like to automatically have people added to mailing lists when they are put in groups...
i am still working on all of this and i hope my findings are of some help.
