Managed computer Time Machine setting blocks login

I have seen this a couple of times with 10.7 clients bound to 10.6 servers, and now with 10.8 clients and servers.
I have machines bound w/ authenticated binding to the server so I get a machine entry in WGM / OD. I create a machine group and set a preference for the group for Time Machine (set disk and quota). Now, on the client side, I log out (so the MCX settings refresh) and all logins are blocked (both network and local users). I get the spinning gear and have to reboot with ARD.
I'm not sure what it is in the process that is stopping the login process - any ideas of where to look?
Thanks,
Miles

Just reset the Admin password for my account using the system disk and everything works now.

Stick the OS X 10.6 install disk and reboot the computer holding c down.
Second screen in is a Utilities menu with Password Reset, try that.

  • Can I delete my music on my Macbook air now that I have time machine set up?

I cannot see the music files on the time machine.  Can I delete my music on my Macbook air now that I have time machine set up to an external hard drive?

The Time Capsule is for your Time Machine backups, not "everyday" files. .
If you delete the music files on your MacBook Air.....there are a number of negative things that can occur.
    1) The only copy of your music will be on the Time Capsule. When....not if....the Time Capsule has a problem, you will lose your music files, since you have no backup for them. In other words, you always need at least two copies of your important files on two separate drives.
    2) Time Machine backs up the changes that occur on your MacBook Air. If you delete the music files from the MacBook Air, at some point Time Machine will also delete them from the Time Capsule.....and there is no way to know when this might occur.
A better plan to consider might be to add a USB or FireWire drive and connect it directly to your MacBook Air. Move the music files over to that drive.
Then, Time Machine will back up both your MacBook Air and the attached hard drive. So, you have an "original" copy of your data on one drive and a backup copy of the same data on the Time Capsule.  That would be a minimum backup plan.

  • Time Machine: setting up second external harddrive does it make a complete back up the first time?

Time Machine: when setting up a second external hard drive (after a Time Capsul is already set up) does Time Machine place a complete backup onto the new external hard draive?

I want to use Time Machine to begin "doing it's thing" - creating a second Time Machine backup of the hard drive on my computer - on a new 2Tb external hard drive I've just installed and initialized.
When I open the TIme Machine App it automatically goes into "Star Wars" mode as it's already commected to my Time Capsule.  THere is no menu bar anywhere.  When you cancel the "Star Wars" mode, it just closes the application.
Where are the TIme Machine App "controls" - the menus where I can direct it to install and do an ongoing second TIme Machine backup of my Computer's hard drive on the new extrnal drive?
Thanks for any help.  I hope this is as simple as it sounds.
    Steve
PS If having a 2nd external drive doing regualr Time Machine backups of my main hard drive will slow down my computer too much (MacBook Pro 2009 running Mountain Lion) please advise.  I can also just do some other type of file and folder backup on a daily basis once a day.  I used to use Retrospect before I got the TIme Capsule 3 years ago.  Looks like REtrospect isn't among the most popular file backup apps for the Mac anymore.

  • Help with the Time Machine set up

    Hi all,
I am a newbie to Mac computers. I just got my very first MBP. As I am learning my way around and trying set things up with it, I came across the TIme Machine (TM). How do I set TM up? I have a 1 TB Seagate external hard drive that I've been using to back up few windows laptop at my household. When I plugged this drive in,TM prompted me to erase everything that I have in the external drive if I were to use that as my TM backup device. But I don't want to lose everything that I have in that drive. Since it contains backed up data from multiple machine. What do I do to set up TM backup using the same external drive without losing what I have in there?
In addition, I will be loading windows 7 on a virtual machine using Oracle Virtualbox on my mbp. Will I be able to backup data from the VM onto the same drive?
Thank you all in advance for your replies.
    Prince

Yes, move all the data from the hard drive to another computer. Then use Disk Utility (in Utlities folder) to erase and partition the hard drive. You can use one partition for Time Machine and the other partition for all of your other stuff. Be sure and move your 'stuff' to a differnt partition than the Time Machine.
For everything you'd ever want to know about Time Machine, see http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html.
    Good luck...

  • Time Machine: setting-up external hard drive question

I purchased the Lacie 2TB External Hard Drive from Apple and in the set-up process it said to free up all 2 TB storage space if I intend to use it only for my MAC (which I do), so that's what I did. However, when I was doing that, the set-up screen kept giving me these warning signs if I did all MAC like the screen told me to do it would erase data on the disk...I did all MAC anyways so not sure what got erased since nothing I thought is supposed to be on there...don't these come clean with 2TB available? I just want to make sure I did this right!

Not now no. All is ok then.
If Time machine HAS been backing up to it, its fine, it couldnt use it otherwise.
However now that youve got A (single) backup, dont make the huge mistake everyone else does,  backup your data on yet another HD and update it and store it somewhere safe
second HD doesnt have to use time machine, just drag and drop your valuable data.
Hard drives are cheap as dirt, buy another one at minimum if you cherish your priceless data.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6031
The Tragedy that will be, the tragedy that never should be
Always presume correctly that your data is priceless and takes a very long time to create and often is irreplaceable. Always presume accurately that hard drives are extremely cheap, and you have no excuse not to have multiple redundant copies of your data copied on hard drives and squirreled away several places, lockboxes, safes, fireboxes, offsite and otherwise.
Hard drives aren't prone to failure…hard drives are guaranteed to fail (the very same is true of SSD). Hard drives dont die when aged, hard drives die at any age, and peak in death when young and slowly increase in risk as they age.
Never practice at any time for any reason the false premise and unreal sense of security in thinking your data is safe on any single external hard drive. This is never the case and has proven to be the single most common horrible tragedy of data loss that exists.
Many 100s of millions of hours of lost work and data are lost each year due to this single common false security. This is an unnatural disaster that can avoid by making all data redundant and then redundant again. If you let a $60 additional redundant hard drive and 3 hours of copying stand between you and years of work, then you've made a fundamental mistake countless 1000s of people each year have come to regret.
Many countless people think they're safe and doing well having a single external backup of their vital data they worked months, years, and sometimes decades on. Nothing could be further from the truth. Never let yourself be in situation of having a single external copy of your precious data.

  • When I tried to back up my computer, Time Machine says 'an error occurred while creating the backup folder.' When I check the side of the partition where I manually saved old files, the folders are there, but NONE of the files are.

I haven't backed up my computer in over a year. When I tried to back it up today, Time Machine says 'an error occurred while creating the backup folder.' When I check the side of the partition where I manually saved old photos and documents (including all the pictures from the year I studied abroad/traveled a bunch), the folders are there, but NONE of the files are.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be, or how I could fix it? I really don't want to lose all those photos

So you were doing a time machine backup to another partition on the same hard drive? Just trying to gather some information so i can provide a helpful response.

  • Manage multiple Time Machines

I have about 10 users with Macs.
Is there any application/tool I can use to manage all of their Time Machines in one place?
I'd love to be able to see success/failure of their backups.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
There's nothing built-in. TM is designed more for folks at the novice to intermediate level, so is kept as simple and automatic as possible.
You might, however, be able to something with Automator or Applescript. TM keeps a hidden XML file with the results of the latest backup; you could have a job on each Mac that periodically sends a copy to a central location (or a central job that could go get it on demand), then extracts what you want.
    The file is: /Private/Var/db/.TimeMachine.Results.plist
There are probably some alternatives, but that's the one that comes to mind.

  • Time capsule/time machine set up question

    Hi there,
I'm getting my new Macbook Pro tomorrow and am going to set up time capsule and have a couple questions on the best way to do it.  I want time machine to back up my macbook at a regular interval.  I also want it to back up my external hard drive manually (ie once every couple of months when I think about it).
Normally my external hard drive will be plugged into the back of my time capsule so I can access it from the macbook.  I realize I'll need to plug it in to the macbook to back it up as I'm pretty sure the Time Capsule won't back up an external hard drive plugged into it.  I'm just not sure what settings I need to change in time machine to acheive this.
Also, I have my Imac on the network which i don't want backed up with Time machine.  Will it try to back it up automatically when I turn on Time Machine?  What do I need to do to prevent this?
    Thanks for your help,
    Dug

    Hello Dug.
I want time machine to back up my macbook at a regular interval.  I also want it to back up my external hard drive manually (ie once every couple of months when I think about it).
This is no problem.. leave TM to do its hourly backups. It is faster that way and it will simply clean up the backups at the end of the day and end of week to remove the excess and repeats.
Read how TM actually works as it is good to understand.. It is not a simple piece of software.
The general info at the top here is great.. about TM and clones.. as well as the article on TM and magic.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
This covers a lot more of the details.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I realize I'll need to plug it in to the macbook to back it up as I'm pretty sure the Time Capsule won't back up an external hard drive plugged into it.
Correct.. TM only backs up the disks plugged into the Mac.
It cannot backup network drives.. ie the TC. Or anything plugged into the TC.
You can setup TM to backup the external drive by removing it from the exclude list in preferences. When it is plugged in you might need to still go to preferences and remove the exclusion .. it will take a long long time to backup.. And I personally think this is the wrong way to do it. I think you are better keeping the backup of the external drive separate. I would use (I do) carbon copy cloner, which works great and is far more flexible than TM.. you can then backup the external USB drive plugged into the TC occasionally to the TC without any unplugging.. (although I would plug the MBP into the TC by ethernet). Which reminds me your first backup of the MBP should be by ethernet.. if you Mac has no ethernet port buy the thunderbolt to ethernet dongle..it is not expensive and well worth the money.
TC cannot do anything.. it is a dumb as a board hard disk in a fairly dumbed down router.
Also, I have my Imac on the network which i don't want backed up with Time machine.  Will it try to back it up automatically when I turn on Time Machine?  What do I need to do to prevent this?
TM is controlled by you.. if you don't want TM to back up, don't turn it on.. I am lost why you think TM will start automatically backing up. It won't.. it is going to sit there off.. and you can leave it off.

  • Time Machine set up on Time Capsule with data already on it

I've had a Time Capsule for a while, using it with my Powerbook G4 running OS 10.4. I put a lot of data on it including my entire iTunes library. I just got a new MacBook Pro with OS 10.5. Now I want to set up Time Machine. Can I do this on a Time Capsule with data already on it? I haven't given it a try because I don't have the data on the TC backed up (I know I need to fix that). TM won't require me to erase the volume first will it?

I discussed this issue with Apple Care at one point in the past when I was considering doing something similar to you.  They informed me that Apple does NOT recommend or support using Time Machine over a network (ethernet) connection.  They said Time Machine was not designed for it.
    Hope this helps

  • Time Machine backups blocked by malware

Hello all.   I have just used AdwareMedic to effectively remove from my iMac a version of the malware Genieo that I picked up a few days ago.   However, I am still unable to use Time Machine to revert to my older files because the Restore button in the lower righthand corner of the screen no longer lights up when I am in Time Machine mode.   It would seem something has been turned off, or blocked.   I have already reset my Time Machine settings.    Advice please?   I would like to once again have the capacity to revert to an older saved version of my data and programs.

Are you trying to restore everything, or just certain items? If the latter, you have to select a snapshot behind the frontmost window and then select at least one file before the Restore button will become active.

  • Time Capsule/Time Machine Set Up

Every morning when I get into work, I have to reselect my Time Capsule as the backup disk for Time Machine. I thought it was supposed to back up automatically. Is it because I'm disconnecting from the network every night & taking my laptop home with me? My boss has an Air and he's having the same issues. Did I possibly do something wrong during setup? Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Hi Thanks for the response. In desperation I went and dug out my old Maxtor back up drive. Plugged it in via USB, and Time Machine worked straight away.
Time Machine works fantastically - I am now wondering whether to just plug the Time Capsule into the USB?
Otherwise, it is going back to the shop!
    Thanks again.

  • Time machine backup blocked; disc image sparse bundle needs ejecting

Team, I cannot backup to 2Tb time machine; error message as above. How do I 'eject' this disc image and what exactly is it?
    Thanks
    Nick B

OK, we fixed this for now with the simple, but common Mac way of
    throwing something in the trash.
In this case it seems to be a temporary network connection to the remote Time Machine partition. When Time Machine balks, the icon for the temporary mount gets stuck on the Desktop. We threw it in the trash (unmounting it) and then Time Machine can resume.
Apple networking is annoying, but then on the other, it's easy. We lose printing in a similar way.
Anyway, although we seem to be OK, I'd like to understand this a bit better. I can see in the "/Volumes" folder (in Terminal) three Time Machine mounts, not one as I would have expected, and they all appear to point to the same place:
    drwx------   9 root                   wheel  264   Jun 22 10:23 TM-2
    drwx------   9 root                   wheel  264  Jun 22 10:23 TM-1
    drwx------   9 MYUSERNAME  staff   264 Jun 22 10:23 TM
On the remote machine, the disc TM appears only once.
If you look at the listing of all three, they are identical. What gives?
Is this a consequence of the fact that we are putting the time machine backups on a remote machine (that is not a Mac OS server). We have to mount the remote disc before Time Machine will run, but from that point it works perfectly -- or as perfectly as any mac networking thing seems to work.

  • Time Machine sets Lacie as a Read Only Device

I found the threads that suggest the verify / repair permissions and that cleared the "Read Only" problem. However, I am getting often errors just launching the "Disk Utility" from the main hard disk (not the Time Machine Lacie) with this crash dump.
It appears that Disk Utility getting device info prior to launch about all available hard disks in the Imac and Lacie is giving problems. as listed at the
    bottom of the crash dump.
    Any thoughts?. Bad disk?
