Managed Library - Reveal file in finder option ?

I am using a managed library , if I want to view a file manually I am not able to locate an option which will reveal the file in finder option for me.

I am in fact quite happy with the option of managed library quite frankly . Saves me the hassles of individuals backups.
I wanted the option to actually reach to those unsupported videos in my library and maybe replace them with new encoded one.
A managed library can be a good choice.
You should simply import the new videos, put them where you want, and tag, flag, and album them as you did the others. Then delete the unsupported version(s).
A cardinal rule of a managed library is: DON'T TOUCH THE FILES IN THE LIBRARY with any program but Aperture.

  • Manage library - seperate file locations

Hi, i use itunes for windows 7.5.0.
thx to growing podcasts and music library use my disk1 where my (so far one and only) itunes library is full
So i would like to tranfer the podcasts+video files to a seperate folder on disk2.
Is there any way of physically moving the files but keeping central directory (catalogue, playlists, etc)?
I noticed that when ADDing new titles (music, video) there is an option /a with creating a central copy and /b with only a directory entry into library - so my goal should be possible
How do i manage to get around duplicate entries (which happen if i just move the files to disc 2 - which ones by the way? - and add them back to the library from new location)?
PS An unrelated but similar question:
my libray is still small (c. 20GB) I noticed that new generation ipods have 80/160 GB
If i bought one for the family could we use three seperate itune libraries on one ipod (similar to a shared pc usage, i open my ipod library, my son his, ... and each ipod subsection sync with a matching itunes library on a PC)?

One way to do it is consolidating your Library using iTunes. It will copy all the files from wherever they are to the iTunes Music folder location that you have set in your preferences (Prefs, Advanced tab, general tab, music folder location).
Before trying any of this, backup (at minimum) your iTunes Library files (by default in My Documents\My Music\iTunes).
In other words, set your iTunes Music folder to the location you want on "disk2", then, from the "Advanced" menu, select "Consolidate Library". All the current items in your Library will be updated to play from the new location.
Since iTunes copies the files, you will have to manually delete the original files (after you're sure the copy was performed correctly).
BTW, you do not have to have the preference checked for "Keep iTunes Music folder organized", nor the "Copy files to iTunes Music..." for this to work.

  • Command-click on stacks doesn't reveal file in finder under snow leopard

I could have sworn I have been doing this for years but it seems this functionality is broken. Any idea what can be causing it?

hmmm, where else could i try it? When I do it it just makes the stack go back down and does not reveal. It used to work I swear!

New user here.  Trying to import iPhoto 9.4.2 libraries into Aperture 3.4.3 as referenced files. When accessing File>Import>Library, it finds the iPhoto library just fine, but then imports it as Master files. No option that I can find to leave the photos in place on the file system.  All the literature says their should be an option to choose, but I never get that option.  What?

All the literature says their should be an option to choose, but I never get that option.
That has been true for the previous Aperture versions. Now Aperture simply treats the original image files exactly as they are in the imported library. Referenced images will stay referenced, managed will be imported as managed. But you can always relocate the imported managed images afterwards by using "File > Relocate".

My iPhone has two identical options under "iTunes wi-fi sync" that are the same computer. I only have one user on my computer, and I tried moving my iTunes file in Finder to organize it and now my library's not synced with my phone. Help?

I have the same problem. Right now my iPhone 5S shows 3 instances of the computer to which it is connected under Settings » General » iTunes WiFi Sync. I'm having problems connecting and syncing, and this is probably the cause: the phone chooses one of these connections, and it isn't the one that's actually in use. What's probably happening is that the phone and computer establish a connection using a dynamic IP address, the address becomes "disassociated" due to error, another address is associated, the phone retains each address/link, and each link is displayed as if it represents a separate computer (the fact that the name of the computer is identical is ignored, as the only thing that is considered important is the IP address). But that's all conjecture. More important, I'm not sure how to fix the problem. A network reset doesn't do it.

  • HT3842 Does iTunes store the original music file and copy it into a separate folder? If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library?

Hi, on my last PC when transferring music to my new MacBook Pro i noticed i had about 6 duplicated of each song in every album i took hours in removing them.
I Just wondered Does iTunes store the original music file and then copy it into a separate folder?
If i delete the original file from finder will it remove it from my iTunes library or vice versa. I didnt want to lose any music like i have some how managed to on my old computer.
Or should i keep both files of it in the Music folder and also iTunes library folder?
    Which is best ?

    DrewPowell wrote:

It does both at the same time.
When you add files to iTunes, it copies them into /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/ folder. The original file remains where it was.
You can drag a file to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/Automatically add to iTunes/ folder.
This will add to iTunes and move it to /Music/iTunes/iTunes media/.
I keep a shortcut of this folder on my desktop then simply drag files to the shortcut to add to iTunes.
Then there are no "extra" files around.

You can "see" the iPhoto library in Time Machine backups, but you cannot "open" the library or "browse" the contents while you are in Time Machine.
Apple makes you restore the entire iPhoto library to another destination...like your desktop....if you want to retrieve a few older images that you may have deleted by mistake.
This is a convoluted mess, but unfortunately, that is the way it is.
See Pondini's excellent, detailed information on this:
    http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
You might also want to post in the iPhoto support area to see if the experts over there might have a workaround for you. I cannot find one, but I'm not an iPhoto expert.

  • I have my library in AIFF format on my iMac. I want to converte all in Apple less loss on my macbook pro. how can i do? becouse if i converte the files, i find on library the two version, AIFF and Apple lessloss....

about 300 CD imported on my IMAC in AIFF version.
I want to create the same library on my macbook pro, but Apple lessloss to use for ipod and other device.
I import on the finder'S macbook pro all the library ( many gigabyte in AIFF version). I open Itunes, add to library the folder, on preference i set Apple lessloss, but itunes import AIFF version.
If i converte on itunes the files, i find all the two version: AIFF and Apple lessloss. I cannot remove manually all the file AIFF....
Duplicate files is impossible to remove with 11 version...

Select 'Songs' then 'List'. Click on the top of the 'Kind' column to sort by type of file, thus bringing all the AIFF files together. (If you don't have a 'Kind' column, enable it in View>View Options).
Click on the top AIFF file in the list, then shift click on the bottom one to select them all. Hit the delete key. At the prompt, be sure to choose to move them to the Trash or they will disappear from the list but remain in the actual Library in the Finder.

To make Mail quit you'll need to perform a forced quit or, failing that, a forced shutdown.
When an application won't quit you can hold the Command and Option keys together and then type the ESC key. This (usually) brings up a dialog with all the running applications. Select the offending program and click the Force Quit button.
If this doesn't force the application to quit (quite rare) or if you cannot get the Force Quit Dialog to pop up, hold the power button for about 10 seconds to shut down the entire computer. This should be a last resort but sometimes is necessary.

  • First time user questions (managing library, file size defaults, cropping,)

    I'm on my first Mac, which I am enjoying and am also using iPhoto '08 for the first time which is a great tool. It has really increased my efficiency in editing a lot of photos at one time. However, the ease of use makes a couple custom things I want to do difficult. I'd appreciate any feedback;
    1) I often want to get at my files for upload or transfer to another machine. When I access Photos with my Finder I can only see "Iphoto Library" (or something like that) which does not show the individual files. Very annoying. I have found that i can browse to one of the menus and select "Open Library" and then I can see all the files.
How can I make it default to this expanded setting? When I am uploading pictures via a web application, for instance, the file open tool does not usually give me the option to Open the library. By Default, I would like the library to always be expanded so I do not have to run iPhoto or select "open" to view the files.
Basically, I just want easy manual control of my files in Finder and other applications.
    2) Where do I set the jpg size of an edited file? My camera will output 10MB files and after a simple straighten or crop, iPhoto will save them to 1MB files.
Ignoring the debate on file size, is there a way to control the jpg compression so I can stay as close to what came out of the camera as possible?
    3) I crop all my photos to 5x7. If I do that once, it comes up the next time. However, once I straighten the photo and then choose crop, it always comes up with some other odd size by default (the largest rectangle that can be fit in the new photos size).
While I know this may be useful for some people, it is time consuming when going through hundreds of photos to constantly have to choose "5x7" from the drop down list. Is there a way to make this the default?
I'm sure I'll have some more questions, but thus far, I've been real happy with iPhoto.
    4) The next task will be sharing this Mac Pictures folder on my Wireless network so my XP PC can access it. I'm open to any tips on that one as well....
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services.
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
The format of the iPhoto library is this way because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.
Basically, I just want easy manual control of my files in Finder and other applications.
What's above is what's on offer. Remember, iPhoto is NOT a file organiser, it's a photo organiser. If you want to organise files, then use a file organiser.
Where do I set the jpg size of an edited file
You don't. Though losing 9MB off a 10MB files is excessive. Where are you getting these file sizes.
I crop all my photos to 5x7. If I do that once, it comes up the next time. However, once I straighten the photo and then choose crop, it always comes up with some other odd size by default (the largest rectangle that can be fit in the new photos size).
Straightening also involves cropping. Best to straighten first, then crop.
The next task will be sharing this Mac Pictures folder on my Wireless network so my XP PC can access it.
If you use the hack detailed above be very careful, it's easy to corrupt the iPhoto Library, and making changes to the iPhoto Package File via the Finder or another app is the most popular way to go about it.

  • Can't find Library when using Import Mailboxes option in Mountain Lion

Hi there, I'm trying to import my Mailboxes I've created on my iMac in my Apple Mail, but I can't see the "Library" folder. I've searched the web and found instructions to unhide the "Library" folder when using Finder, but this does not help me as I can't use this when following the instructions and prompts in the Mail>File>Import Mailboxes option. I'm running Mountain Lion. Can anyone help?

Sorry that option not available in mountain lion.
You can use a terminal command but the easiest way to do this is to choose Go>Go To Folder ~/Library.
When it opens drag the Folder from the window bar into your side bar.
This will make it always available.
To remove it just drag out of the side bar.

  • Where is the plist file for the Finder option "Always Show Extensions"?

Where is the plist file for the Finder option "Always Show Extensions"?
I am designing a new master NetRestore image for Leopard. I have all my Dock and FInder prefs tweaked and customized on the image. (They all live in /System?Library/User Template/English.lproj/Library/Preferences...)
The one preference I cant get to stick is the option to "Always SHow Extensions" It appears to not be located in the usual com.apple.finder
Can you tell me where this preference lives?

    user/library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
Hold down the Option key when selecting "Go" in the Finder's menu to see your Library folder.

  • How to use spotlight to find and reveal files in the finder

Hello, Spotlight  in Yosemite gives you the opportunity to reveal all files in the Finder (show all files in Finder) but can it reveal in finder just the want you want? We could that with Maverick, using command. Command now seems shows you only where it is, but it doesn't take you to take to finder. Thank you

    Thank you Brenden,
Sorry for not being more clear, I looked at your links but  I couldn't find the solution. Spotlight allows you to show "all results from your Mac in the Finder" but my questions is: can spotlight reveal a specific file in the finder? Showing all results in the finder is not very helpful because it shows too many.  I used to be able to do it all the time with Maverick but I don't know how to do it with Yosemite, maybe it is no possible.
    Thank you,
