Managed printers and PPDs

I set up some managed printers and was wondering if the server should be pushing the PPD to the clients or not.
What I did was install the drivers on the server, made the printer and added it to my managed users group. The printers show up for the users but the PPD is set to generic. I was assuming the PPD would get pushed to the clients, like Windows does.
Do I have to install the drivers on my clients as well?

Yes you will need to push out the PPD files yourself. If you have Apple Remote Desktop it helps

  • WARNING:  Canon Pro Printers and CS4 – Serious Colour Management Issue

Over the last four days (and over fifty prints) I have undertaken extensive and meticulous tests to identify the cause of a problem; namely that targets for profiling a new printer (a Canon Pro9000), printed with ‘no colour management’, were printing far too dark and with what appeared to be a colour cast.
I have conclusively eliminated the printer, the printer drivers, the Mac OS, corrupted preference files, corrupted user accounts, incorrect Photoshop settings, incorrect printer driver settings, the ‘sticky settings' issue, and user error as possible causes of the problem.
I can say with 95% certainty that my tests, conducted using Mac OSX 10.4.11, have proved the following:
That, printing to a Canon Pro9000 or iP4500, Photoshop CS4 does not print accurate targets suitable for producing profiles.  This applies to both the No Colour Management (NCM) and the Printer Manages Colour (PMC) settings.
Photoshop CS and CS2 are not effected.
    I did not test CS3.
Furthermore, colour managed prints (using the same accurate profile made in CS2), printed in CS2 and CS4, show subtle differences.  This may not be an issue except in the most critical applications.
It is likely that the problem will not be confined to the two Canon printers above since many other Canon printers share the same driver architecture.
Reading posts and discussions on other websites would seem to indicate that this problem is also manifest with some Epson printers and may also effect Mac OSX 10.5.
I have to conclude, therefore, that Photoshop CS4 cannot be replied upon to print targets of sufficient accuracy to produce reliable profiles for a colour managed workflow.
The fact that this is only just being reported can be attributed to four factors:
That many CS4 users are continuing to use profiles made under older versions of Photoshop and have yet to make new profiles using CS4.
Some users may not immediately notice a problem, or may ascribe it to other causes.
Some users may take the line of least resistance and use a previous version of Photoshop to work around the problem.
Some users are still using the older versions of Photoshop not effected.
Eric Chan (of Adobe) has stated on another website that CS4 implemented some new APIs for printing and that this has given rise to some "minor glitches".  If Eric Chan is correct, and Adobe changed the APIs in Photoshop CS4, this begs question of whether Adobe sufficiently tested CS4 before release ?  If Adobe did not test their software, and therefore failed to identify this critical problem, this would suggest negligence on Adobe’s part.  If Adobe identified the problem but then did not inform users that a potentially serious colour management issue existed this would suggest wilful or gross negligence.
It is not good enough to say that Adobe simply followed the ‘conventional’ path and ‘followed the rules’ regarding API implementation.  The experience of end users does not correspond to a “minor glitch” and, in my case, has been extremely costly in terms of time (over five days in all), lost revenues, and materials.  Furthermore, why should Adobe's customers be forced to use their valuable time diagnosing problems clearly of Adobe's creation – and actually admitted.
In UK law providers of goods and services (and this includes software) have to supply them as “fit for purpose”.  Clearly, in terms of colour management, CS4 is not fit for purpose.  Neither can Adobe hide behind its labyrinthine licensing terms since any exclusions would be ruled unlawful under the UK’s ‘Unfair Contract Terms’ Act.
My strong and unequivocal recommendation is that representatives from Adobe, Apple, and the printer manufacturers meet together – with the utmost urgency – and provide a rapid and complete solution.  It is simply not good enough to pass this ‘over the wall’ saying “it’s not our problem”.  It is.  Adobe's, Apple's, and the printer manufacturers'.  Please solve it.  And quickly.
Identify the problem clearly, make it and the solution/s public; and publicise it widely and thoroughly.

    Dear DYP.
    Thank you for your concern.
    "What fixes have you tried?"
If I may quote from my post above:
"I have conclusively eliminated the printer, the printer drivers, the Mac OS, corrupted preference files, corrupted user accounts, incorrect Photoshop settings, incorrect printer driver settings, the ‘sticky settings' issue, and user error as possible causes of the problem.
I can say with 95% certainty that my tests, conducted using Mac OSX 10.4.11, have proved the following:

Photoshop CS and CS2 are not effected.
    I did not test CS3"
These tests took place over three weeks and involved over five days of work and the replacement of the printer on Canon's recommendation (although the printer is clearly not at fault).
Please note that I am using Mac OSX 10.4.11.
"What driver versions are you using?"
Pixma iP4500 6.9.3 (also 6.9.1, 6.9.2 and the driver supplied on the CD).
Pro 9000 4.8.7 (also 4.7.3, 4.8.4 and the driver supplied on the CD).
"Yes it is frustrating but in a lot of cases it is fixable as I and others have clear reported, on this and the LR forums."
I have not found any fix on any website referring to Canon printers, despite exhaustive searches (this includes Canon's European and US websites which are mute on the issue).
The ReadMe file supplied with the installation disc of CS4 refers to problems with "some Canon printers" when printing with the 'Printer Manages Color' but does not identify using 'No Color Management' nor Epson printers as having issues.
I hope this post answers your questions.
Clearly all users of CS4 need to be warned of this problem which is likely to effect other printers.  I believe that I am assisting others by issuing this warning.  It is done, not to cause mischief, but in the spirit of a public service.  CS4 users can then treat their printing results from CS4 with caution, and then conduct their own tests.  I have presented a workaround which is to use a prior version of CS4.

  • Managed Clients Printers and wrong Printernames

    Hi,
we have managed clients and assign printers through the WGM.
If for example the client uses the "ad dept"printer the printername in the dock, while it is printing says "finance dept" but prints to the correct printer.
I have spoken with other admins, that also use WGM and managed clients/printers ad they have the same situation.
Again: The detination is right but the name of the printer in the Dock is wrong.
I looked in the detailview in WGM and found nothing irregular.
Is there a way to handle this?
    regards
    Oliver

We had a wierd problem with HP printers giving the wrong names... we had to change the printers mDNS name. Dunno if this helps

  • Is it possible to create a configuration profile that will install multiple network printers and their associated drivers

Is it possible to create a configuration profile that will install multiple network printers and their associated drivers?
I was not able to find profile manager on my employer's installation of 10.6 Server. Is this only a feature of 10.7/10.8 server?

10.6 server does not have profile manager, profile manager is only available in 10/7 and 10.8 server
for 10.6 server you'll need to use wgm and server admin
printer management with 10.6, I recommend you read the relevant server manuals regarding

  • MCX Managed printers problem with Adobe CS5.5

I manage 300 or so Macs running 10.6x with a 10.6 server using Workgroup Manager.
I am having a problem where the managed printers multiply exponentially in Adobe applications, so that on some machines there may be 15 or so versions of  the same printer in the print dialogue box. This only happens in Adobe Applications. When I look in CUPS there are multiple MCX versions of the same printer, no other Applications seem to be picking up these extra printers. If I reset the print system and reboot then everything returns to normal for a while, but the extra printers slowly return. Is anybody else having the same problem and managed to solve it?

Did you ever resolve this? I'm also having issues!

  • Directions on how to setup printers and push them out to clients using WGM

Hello, I am looking for directions on how to manage printers in WGM. How do you set them up and how do you push them out to clients.

You'll probably get a more succinct answer posting to the server forums.

  • Best way to manage Printers

    Hi all,
We have an ERP System. We only use Windows Computers. Users print their documents in any of the printers at the "print room", a centralized place where the physical printers resides. Each user has in his/her Windows profile the printers he or she needs. Now: SAP Is new here. We are having the "test time". No production system installed for now. So: I need to know what is the best way to manage the printers. It seems that the printer type SAPWIN is enough for us. It is just a "training". In PRD, i suppose that other access method is more appropiate, because of the batch jobs. I just dont know what is the best way to manage printers. What do you, guys, do? How you manage the printers? An example: I have just on printer defined on SAP: SAPWIN printer. There are 100 users. I suppose that every user can print to this device, and then pick the Windows printer they want. Is that ok?
    Regards,
    A.

    Hi,
For my understanding, many ways can be used to manage a IE environment, like using Administrative Template, GPP, IEM or IEAK, depends on yourself, but pay attention to that IEM will no longer work on computers where Internet Explorer 10 or newer is installed,
so it is a difference between IE 9 and 10. And GPP and IEAK use asynchronous processes when they run, so it is recommended to use only one for each group, you can see detailed information in the folloowing links.

  • Unable To Load NIS Map (printers and printers.conf)

    Hello;
I am trying to migrate my NIS maps for "printers" and "printers.conf" into my newly built DSEE 11.1.1.7 (Solaris/Sparc) server, and I am getting this error (same for each):
    # ldapaddent -a simple -D "cn=Directory Manager" -f /tmp/printers printers

From my DCC, I am able to see an OU named printers, but it is empty, and not showing up in the output above.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Update:
I've found that you must use the lpset command to populate/install UNIX printers.
As an example, an entry in my printers.conf looked like this:
    hplj1001:\
            :bsdaddr=printserver1.example.com,hp30ps:\
            :description=Semi-Retired HPLJ:
I added it using the following command:
    lpset -n ldap -h ldapserver -D "cn=Directory Manager" -a hplj001:bsdaddr=printserver1,hp30ps hplj001
I hope this is right, I have no way of testing at the moment, am I doing this right, is there a faster, more foolproof way to do this?
Lastly, how do I assign "default" printers for users?
    TIA!

  • Problems with Managed Printers

Our school has two main types of users: Faculty and Students. We want Students to be able to print to one list of printers and Faculty to print to a different list. In Workgroup Manager I have specified the lists and when a user logs in they can see that list and print with no issues. The problem is that after they log out of a public computer, their list is not cleared away. So if a Faculty user logs in after a Student user (or vice-versa), they can now see both lists of printers combined. Is there something I am missing to make this work?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Jason,
Before going further, sorry for the late response.
    >>If I create a test account and login to the same PC as a student that doesn't get the printers it works fine for about 9-10 logins and then it starts happening to the test account. Its like the problem takes a few logins to occur
Based on the description, after the issue occurs, please log out the users, log in again, and then run the command
gpresult/h gpreport.html to collect group policy result to check if the group policy settings still apply correctly.
Besides, what printers do we use? For this involves third party hardware product, and in order to better troubleshoot the issue, we can also contact vendor company to see if they have some suggestions for this issue.
    Best regards,
    Frank Shen

  • Managing Printers via WGM

In WGM, under printer Lists, there an option to "Only show managed printers (Mac OS X v10.5.7 or later)". I have this selected, and add users to the group, with three printer's selected for the user's printer list.
Presumably, this would disable their existing printers, and only give them access to the ones I'm providing via OD. This doesn't seem to work however -- it appears they have all of the printers they had, in addition to these.
Is there a way to remotely remove the other printers?

Try remotely through ARD removing the Managed Prefs folder,
then reboot the clients. Then, on one client to test, login
as a managed user, and select the "refresh managed Prefs"
button first, then proceed to login as normal.
See then if that fixes the issue.
I've seen these old printer selections "stick" after making that change just as you did,
and for some clients that seemed to work. For the more stubborn clients,
I had to go in and remove the Printers manually ( cleaning them all out) and
then logging in as a managed user, thus refreshing the managed prefs, and then
the printers would show up correctly.

  • Managed Printers Don't Appear in Printer & Fax Preference Pane

Something curious to ponder. I've had this issue for a while now (though it's not a huge problem), where I have a managed Mac (managed via Mac OS X Server 10.6.8) that doesn't display the printers that have been added to a computer list via Workgroup Manager in the Mac's Printer & Fax preference pane. The printers do appear in CUPS (127.0.0.1:631), and the computer prints fine to the available printers, but they just don't appear in the preference pane. I've attached some screen shots for clarification.
    Computer list in Workgroup Manager
(even with the Only show managed printers option unchecked, nothing shows up in Printer & Fax)
    CUPS page on managed Mac
(All printers show up fine here)
    Print & Fax Preference Pane
(Printers don't show up here, why not?)
    Print dialog box in Safari
    (Printers show up here)
    Any ideas?

  • Hp Printers and Norton 360 Diagnostic Report?

I have had this problem for a long time and have never gotten any postitive solution for it. I have had HP printers for longer than when I started using Norton,But ever since the 5,0 version and later I have had trouble with the Run Diagnostic Report feature that ALWAYS show my HP printer drivers as not installed. Now!  the Printers all work fine except if I go to Device Manager it will show the yelow exclamation mark then I'll update the drivers thru DM,but windows will fail to locate the drivers, but the printers AGAIN I say work fine. Now most of the techs that I've talk to and chatted with at Norton support tell me that as long as the printers work to ignore the Diagnostic Report!!!! Now I have version 6 and the problem still exists. You would think that if it didn't go away in the next version (6) then something is wrong with the software that should REALLY be addressed. Now the over-time effects from this issue is that I might come home and maybe needing to send a fax, print -up a envelop thru Stamps.com or just print and find that my printers dissappeared from  Devices and Printers And then I'm forced to re-install the drivers all over again. (ALWAYS theFull Version) Now with the new drivers I still have the same issue. There is an issue with the Diagnostic Report features the prevents the drivers of my printers from registering as installed. When I go into properties for the printers it says: The drivers for this device are not installed (code 28). But the printers are working???????? I've also talked to many HP support techs online and they take me over and over thru the process of un-installing the software complete and re-installing it and I still end up with the same results. Can anyone please tell me how to fix this issue or who to talk to to get maybe both companies to research this issue???

Now before you suggest installing with the Anti-virus and the firewall off well!! I've done it all. Is there a feature that's not being installed or missing that prevents the drivers from being read properly or at all?? That's stopping it from registering in Device Manager?

  • Managed Printers

    Hi,
I am having a problem that wasn't an issue on my 10.4 network. Our entire network is now 10.5 and I manage all of my labs individually through computer groups. This way I can specify that the computers in a lab can only print to the computer in the room which is a queue on the server.
The issue is that every time I attempt to modify the managed printer list for the room, it shows all of the old printers on that computer also. With 10.4 I was able to restrict the client to only seeing managed printers. This means that a user has about 6 printers listed and doesn't know which one will actually work.
Is there a plist file that I can incorporate to the group preferences because there isn't a checkbox under printer preferences as with 10.4
Thanks in advance to anybody that has a solution!

If you are managing the clients through computer groups, when you manage printing, you will need to add the printers to the Printer list on the server, once this is done, you should be able to force the users to have a preset list of printers based on what printers are installed on the server. I am currently managing 2000 clients in a 1 to 1 and can push out a printer list to all 2000 clients and change it at will. All of my printers are added to the server, and from there, they will show up in the Printer Preferences in WGM. You select Always and select which printers the Group is allowed to use. You can also make sure that they cannot add/remove printers. A minor glitch though in 10.5, if you manage printers from the server, and still allow users to modify their printer lists, they will still need an administrator password in order to add them. This is easily bypassed by putting a '#' in front of the line in the cupsd.conf file inside /etc/cups/ that says
    # All administration operations require an administrator to authenticate...
    <Limit CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer CUPS-Delete-Printer CUPS-Add-Modify-Class CUPS-Delete-Class CUPS-Set-Default>
    AuthType Default
    Require user @SYSTEM
    Order deny,allow
    </Limit>
so your final copy would look like this
If you are managing the clients through computer groups, when you manage printing, you will need to add the printers to the Printer list on the server, once this is done, you should be able to force the users to have a preset list of printers based on what printers are installed on the server.

  • Color Space for iBook Printers and Photo Printers?

Has anyone figured out what the Color Spaces are for the iBook Printers and the Photo printers they use when you order prints through iPhoto? is it sRGB IEC61966 or something else? I want to clean up some shots in Photoshop before sending...
    Thanks!

Yes, I set all profiles to the sRGB except the monitor. I calibrated my monitor thru the system preferences as the whites seemed too yellow with the sRGB for my viewing tastes.
I don't do a whole lot of printing. More into creating iDVD projects but I have Photoshop set for sRGB. There are a number of sites on color management which may give you some more insight.

  • What is difference between Managed Bean and Backing Bean?

What is difference between Managed Bean and Backing Bean? Please guide me how to create them and when to use them?
Please post sample for both beans.

    Hi,
managed beans and backing beans are quite the same in that the Java object is managed by the JavaServer Faces framework. Manage in this respect means instantiation. The difference is that backing beans contain component "binding" references, which managed beans usually don't. Do backing beans are page specific versions of managed beans.
Managed beans are configured either in the faces-config.xml file, or using ADF Faces and ADFc, in the adfc-config.xml file
