Management of imported pictures

Hey guys,
when I changed from Windows to Mac, I started operating iPhoto with the "self-management" of pictures! I mean, I didn't copied the imported picture into the library!
Now I want iPhoto to manage all my picture and for the new imported stuff it works fine. (Libraries are very great! )
My Question:
How can I move the orignals from the folder "Picture" to the library without importing the pictures again?
Hopefully my english is "good" enough to explain my problem!
Thank you very much!
Rainer

Can you hack an SQL database? If not:
Worth a try: Set iPhoto to be a Managed Library: Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
If that doesn’t work then you'll need to create a new Library and start over from scratch.

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:

  • How do I create sub folders for imported pictures in iPad albums?

I have imported some photos to my iPad for a presentation. The pictures were in different folder under the main folder. After I import the main folder the sub folders are deleted and now all the picture are in one folder. How can I keep the original main folder with sub folders when importing pictures in iPad photo?

Not within the Photos app, but there are other photo management apps in the App Store which allow you to create albums within albums e.g. Photo Manager Pro - that app lets you copy photos to/from the Photos app and copy photos via iTunes : Photo Manager Pro help pages.

  • How do i import pictures from my old iMac directly to my new iMac using iPhoto?

Hello! I have just got a new iMac and I am struggling with Migration Assistant to transfer data from my old iMac to the new one
I have tried to follow the standard procedure with firewire cable without luck
I am now desperately trying to find a smart way to import pictures stored in the old iPhoto (old iMac) to the new iPhoto in the new iMac
    can anyone help??
    Thanks a lot
    Valentina

thanks a lot for your tips, which unfortunately I am not able to follow as I currently stand
here is what happened, this morning when i started the new iMac I realized that i had in fact managed to complete the migration
upon start-up, the new iMac gave me the option to choose whether to log-in as the old Me (i.e. previous account in old iMac) or the new me
If choosing the old, I can access my old iPhoto and iTunes material
If I log-in as the new me, I am in the new iMac and do not know how to access neither iPhoto nor iTunes libraries
Question 1: Is there a way to access both libraries (iPhoto and iTunes) logging-in using the new credentials?
Eventually I would love to get rid of this double users accounts as I do not find it too convenient, I would rather consolidate the important data (i.e. pictures and music) in the new account
Question 2: Alternatively, if I were to follow the tip you gave me and forget about the migration altogether, can you help me locate the iPhoto library in the old iMac so that I can drag it as a single entity from the old Mac? could you also explain what I need to do to move it to the pictures folder of the new iMac?
Thanks so much for helping, pls consider me as a very basic Apple user, I appreciate you making it very easy for me to understand, do not give a lot of details for granted as I do not know a lot of stuff (for ex, I would not know where to start to "drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac")
hope you can help, make my day!

  • Why do imported pictures end up in an "Originals" folder I can't locate?

I am trying to import pictures to IPhoto from a CD. I am choosing "Import to Library" under "Files" on the IPhoto library menu, and then highlighting several folders on the CD.  I click the message that says do not import (all) duplicates. The import occurs. But when I check, the vast majority of the photos I had intended to import are not in the "last imported" area. If I use my "Spotlight" to locate one of the images that didn't import by typing in the exact name of the image (number plus jpg extension) I get two listing of the photo that did not import. One is (as expected) on the CD.  The other is in a folder called "Originals" in my IPhotos library. But when I scan the IPhotos library I cannot find a folder called Originals. In case it's relevant I should mention I have been using IPhotos Library manager, which has been useful. But in this particular instance, I am not using it--just trying a simple import into my IPhotos library.  Thoughts?
    All the best, David

    A few things
1 - Never go directly into the inside of the iPHoto library - there is no reason to and there are no user servicable pieces in it - only access your photos using iPhoto or the media browser - more details are available in the user tip on accessing your iPhoto files -
2 - a default "managed" library (the iPhoto preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library is in its checked state)  is strongly recommended - a referenced library where that preference has been unchecked is not a good idea
3 - IPLM is not a photo manager - it is a library manager and is used to help manage iPHoto libraries - iPhoto is used to view, access and organize libraries
4 - what is the source o the photos on the CD? Camera? Scans? in events view try looking at the top and the very bottom of the events - depending on the source of the photos and their past history they could be anyplace - but that is a place to look -

Hi, I was importing pictures into iPhoto from my sd card and suddenly iPhoto quit.  Now it just won't open.  When I click on the iphoto icon in the dock, nothing happens!  Does anyone have a solution to this problem please?

As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?
If it does then your current library has been damaged and should be repaired: apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IPhone5 no longer importing pictures and videos correctly

I have been able to import pictures and videos from my iPhone 5 to my Windows 7 Pro computer for the last 2 years.  However, a few months ago, I couldn't get the iPhone to appear on the computer, so I went into Device Manager and Uninstalled the driver, then plugged the phone in again to let it reinstall the driver.  That worked, but now when I try to download again, everything on my computer (browsing on windows, windows import manager, Sony Play Memories) says that there are no files to import.  I can take pictures and videos and when I try again, I get the same message, so it's certainly not true.  If I browse to the files using explorer, I go to Computer >> Apple iPhone  and Internal Storage shows 383 MB free of 14.7 GB.  When I browse further down to Internal Storage >> DCIM, the folder is blank.  I tried the same trick of deleting and reinstalling the drivers with the same results.  I don't know what else to try.

I solved my own problem.  Apparently, you now have to log into (unlock) the phone for it to work.  That was not the case on some earlier version of IOS.

  • After importing pictures they became grey with doted white line around

I have imported pictures (RAW CR2 format) from my camera hundreds of times and they all went well. But this time the only the import worked well (I saw the preview when each picture was imported). Then Iphoto asked if i would like to delete the pictures on the camera after import. I deleted them. But then when I should take a look at the pictures they were grey with doted white lines around all of them. When I chose a picture and check the properties I can see that the pictures use normal space. I tried to drag one picture to a directory in the finder but this didn´t work either. The export doesn't work either. When I scroll fast among the pictures I can see them for a short period but when I stop scrolling they will turn grey with doted white line around. Whats wrong? and how to solve?

  • Can't import pictures to iPhoto and can't close app

    Good Day!
    iMac with OS X 10.8.2
    iPhoto 9.4.2
iPhoto as stopped working recently. It used to be fine.
I cannot import pictures anymore: From camera, it says it's importing but it hangs and I have to force quit. From desktop nothing happens.
Also, when I try to quit iPhoto it hangs. Have to force quit.
I have restarted iPhoto with "option-command" keys and went through all the options with no success.
I have deleted iPhoto (dragged from applications menu to trash) and reinstalled it with no success.
Any idea what I could try next?
    Regards,
    003

You could try to recover using Time Capsule, but I fear that the backed up iPhoto Library suffers from the same corruption. You could go back in time to earlier Time Machine backups on Time Capsule to try to find an uncorrupted, older version of your iPhoto Library.
Here's how to move all your photos into a brand new iPhoto Library. This is a brute force way to get all your original photos (and events) into a new, clean Library. I think that your album information will not be moved into the new Library and you'll need to recreate that.
I normally would not recommend doing this but because you have already rebuit your Library using Apple's method and also using IPhoto Library Manager and haven't succeeded, this is like a last resort.
    (1) Start iPhoto with option key held down to create a brand new, empty iPhoto Library. (I think you have done this already, actually.)
    (2) With iPhoto running from this new, empty iPhoto Library, go to your old, corrupted iPhoto Library in the Finder. Control-click on the corrupted Library and select Show Package Contents.
    (3) There should be a folder called Masters there. It should have lots of folders and photo files inside. Drag that Masters folder onto your open iPhoto window where you are running iPhoto connected to the new, empty iPhoto Library.
    (4) This should import (copy) into the new Library all the original photos from the old, corrupted Library.
    (5) You may find that the Event names are not what they were in the old, corrupted Library, but I think the photos will still be grouped into the same Events as before.
    (6) Close iPhoto. Reopen iPhoto, see that this new Library appears to have all your photos as best you can.
You can return to your old, corrupted iPhoto Library for more attempts to revive it because this procedure does not do anything to that old Library. It simply copies all the photos into a new one.
Make sure you have enough disk space to essentially make a copy of the old Library befor eembarking on this.

Since we don't know what version of Lightroom you are using, or your operating system, or your camera, or ANYTHING about what has happened and comparing that to the past, the only answer that can be given is, "Because."

  • LR 5.2 hangs when importing pictures from the SD reader (Macbook)

Hi, I'm experiencing problems when importing pictures in Lightroom. The context is
    - Lightroom 5.2
    - Nikon D600 (always RAW files)
    - SDHC SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB (UHS-I, 95MB/s)
    - Macbook pro 15" early 2011 (high def matte screen) running Mac OS 10.7
I have a recurrent problem when importing pictures in Lightroom using the built-in SD reader. LR starts the process ok but a few seconds later it seems to stop. If I click on a picture I get "preview not available". Even when (after a long long time) the importing finishes, the pictures are corrupted and I have to start it again.
The only solution I've found so far: try once and again (ejecting the card doesn't work, so I get several messages: 'disk not unmounted cleanly' or something similar) until it works smoothly. Usually 3 or 4 re-tries are needed. It goes worse with the number of pictures: the more pictures I have in my SD card, the more likely it will hang repeatedly. Very disappointing...
Any help would be welcome. Thanks!
    Cheers, German

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. Be sure to not delete the photos after importing into the library.
If you are able to import into the new library try repairing your current library as follows:  make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • How do you stop adjustments to the image when importing pictures?

When I import pictures into Lightroom 1.1 they all automatically get adjusted to be much brighter. How do I stop this? The DEVELOP SETTINGS DIALOG in the IMPORT PHOTOS pop up box is set to NONE. I don't think it's a color management issue as the images are imported with a normal brightness/color balance and then get their settings changed one by one. Opening an image in Photoshop CS3 with the EDIT A COPY WITH LIGHTROOM ADJUSTMENTS radio selected opens up the modified brightened image. Opening that same image in Photoshop CS3 with the EDIT ORIGINAL radio selected opens a normal image with correct brightness/color balance.
This is driving me mad! I don't want these adjustments. Please help!

It's not turned on by default, that I know of. Somehow, yours got that way.
As to where it's located, I would like the preferences to be distributed around the application rather than concentrated in one place. I agree with you that this one should be in the import dialog.
