Management Packs and direct connected agents (without SCOM)

Hi Guys,
It´s possible to install and use Management Packs (such as SharePoint Management pack) without SCOM? I mean, collect sharepoint management data using MP and send it to azure operational insights directly (using Monitoring agent only)?
Thanks and Best Regards

No, because Operations manager MPs have discoveries of objects and monitors to calculate state and groups that need to be calculated by a management server.... all things that today OpInsights doesn't do, as OpInsights is not SCOM.
But you can collect your logs from those workloads and run your own intelligence (in the form of searches) against them i.e.
Monitoring SQL Backup Failures with Azure Operational Insights Search and Dashboards
IIS Management Pack Event-Alerting Rules’s OpInsights Searches Equivalents
The two approaches are not opposed, but complementary: SCOM is not meant to keep a very big data volume in the on-premises databases, and a lot of its alerting and intelligence that happens down at the AGENT level. This is performant, but lacks correlation
capabilities, since you can easily get duplicate alerts from multiple agents.
In Operational Insights we look at volumes of data to aid with rich troubleshooting scenarios, investigations and deep dives (often following up from a SCOM alert) allowing to span across all that data.
Check what other data sources other customers are asking to bring in Operational Insights

  • Create multiple management packs and groups

    Hi,
I wonder if it is a way to create a lots of Groups and management packs automatically/scripted.
My problem is that I have a list with about 200 services that I need to setup monitoring for.
The monitoring are simple, its just if the service are started or stopped.
I need to have one management pack and one group for each service.
    Like this:
The monitor monitors the service "workstation" if its started or stopped.
The monitor needs to be created in a management pack with this name: "Custom-Service-workstation"
The agents that I want to monitor this on need to be members of the group "Group-Custom-Service-workstation"
Please, please help me with this.

  • Do we need both management Pack and ADP  for monitoring SOA suite 11g

    Hi,
Do we need to Both management pack and ADP (OCAMM) Application Dependancy and Performance for monitoring SOA Suite 11g.
I was creating a monitoring template for SOA Composite and SOA Infrastructure and wanted to know if I need to install additional ( management packs, ADP and Middleware Plugins ) packs to get an effective template.

A management pack generally refers to the set of pages in EM Grid/Cloud Control which provide functionality for a given set of target types. Since EM Grid Control 11g, the ADP functionality has been part of the Grid Control release and the pages licensed via the Management Pack Plus for SOA or the SOA Management Pack EE.
To populate the ADP pages with data, additional steps must be performed in order to deploy an ADP manager and ADP agents. Doing this is optional, depending on whether or not you require the additional capability that those pages provide.
ADP data, however, are collected and stored separately from the core GC/CC metrics and are not related to the monitoring template functionality.

  • Updating management packs and adding new onces

    Hello Forum
I enjoy the use of SCOM to monitor our environment.
    But i have Two questions:
    1. Will updating management packs from the builtin utility remove any custom overrides and monitors?
For example i have crated custom disk monitors under the Windows Server Management Pack and Custom SQL monitors under the SQL sql management.
    2. Why are only some management packs available from the builtin utility? for example Exchange 2010 and AD 2012 Management packs are downloads on the download center? Why not publish them to the builtin utility of SCOM?
    Thanks for your time!

    Hi,
    1. No, updating management packs will not remove custom overrides. However, with new mp's, new monitors may come, which change some of the monitors which you have overriden. Always read the MP documentation for new mps and test the new mp in a test environment.
    2. Regarding the Exchange 2010, there have been some issues earlier, why it was taken off the online catalog. This will also give you the managment pack documentation, which you should always read.

  • Imported sealed Management Pack and its not showing up in Data Warehouse Job MPSyncJob

    Hello,
When i try to Import a sealed Management Pack (with defined new Dimensions for Data Warehouse) it works fine, and it shows up under Management Packs under the Administration Pane. But its not showing up in the Data Warehouse Job "MPSyncJob".
No errors in the Eventlog on the DW Management Server and cant see any errors in failed Data Warehouse Jobs either.
I imported the MP three Days ago and still nothing.
    Now what?
    /Maekee

I have a smaller SCSM Lab that i can import this MP in and the classes are created in the DW. Now is the question why its not working in my PreProd env and why i dont get any errors in the Event Log? Anyone that can Point me in the right direction for
    this?

  • Mix settop box and direct connection to tv

I have just this week had FIOS installed with 1 digital lcd tv plus hd settop box. I expect to add another tv in the near future buy had thought that I might simply connect the coax directly to the new digital ready tv without a box to receive just the unencrypted channels. But, with the current setup I bypassed the settop box and connected the coax cable directly to my current tv (which has both digital & analog tuners & can receiver over-the-air channels well from rabbit ears). To my surprise (& disappointment) the tv set does not receive any signal.
Is this what happens when your service includes a settop box? Is it really so that you cannot have one set connected via a verizon box and another directly connected? Or am I do something stupid and missing some simple step?
    Any/all comments/suggestons welcome.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

OK, thanks. But the set (vizio sv470xvt) has a qam tuner builtin Also analog (ntsc?) and atsc. The literature with it says it can receive cable channels without a box; it is not cablecard ready so presumably that's not an issue. I've searched on the web and all sites I've found with info confirm that. There is another thread (started earlier than this one, but I did't see it until later) in which many people say that they've had real problems with getting the unencrypted cahnnels; it appears that Verizon moves them around?!
I've tried several times both using the search menu and manually entering some (although not a lot) of some channels. The highest channel number allowed is 135; could that be a problem?
I_Am_The_Stig: your message came in after I started this but my set has options to search for analog/digital or either alone (I've tried both combined & digital only) but nor a 'cable'setting. Since the literature with the set claims it can receive cable signals I would assume it searches with all tuners. But still I don't get any channels found.

    Adelmo,
Any text log file scraping monitoring solution can key off of the ggserr.log looking for key words such as ERROR and WARNING.

  • Management packs and upgrades

I am new to my position and to Service Manager. I can see such great potential of what Service Manager can do and how easy it could be to work with it however my company is afraid to make changes. They have said that not to far in the past
they did some customization and when they did the upgrade to 2012 r2 they lost everything - data included. They couldn't give me quite enough details as those that performed the task are no longer here. It went along the lines of a technician built management
packs that customized the screens. When they did the upgrade the management packs could no longer be used which resulted in them not being able to bring forward the data. They say they worked with Microsoft on the issue. From what I have been reading
this just doesn't sound like something that could happen in this extreme. However, they are now adamant that we cannot customize anything because of this. They want to use the system however people are miserable with it as out of the box just doesn't
fit what they need. How can I convince them that customization is not evil and precautions can be taken when upgrading where everything does not have to be redone?

You're dealing with psychology. Your company had a bad experience and now don't even want to risk that bad experience again.
It would definitely help to know what the heck your previous technicians did that could screw up Service Manager _that_ bad..especially if they were only customizing screens (I assume they were extending or creating forms).
But.. for some general advice on how to keep customizations "safe" and maybe calm your manager's fears, these are the guidelines I follow:
If your customizations include creating your own classes or relationships, always keep them in separate sealed management packs. Data warehouse extensions should also be kept in separate sealed MPs.
Console tasks, custom forms/form extensions, should generally be kept in their own management packs (sealed or unsealed).
Workflow rules, templates, and notification templates should be generally kept in their own unsealed management packs (so they can be easily modified from the console).
Since this is an extensible system, you should be doing regular backups of the Service Manager database. That way if someone messes something up really bad, you can always restore from a backup and lose maybe a day's worth of data.
Lastly, and most importantly, Service Manager is meant to be extended. Microsoft builds platforms. They don't build programs that can do everything. They build programs that can be _made_ to do everything. Every company is different..each has their
own flare for process, their own take on how a program should work. Service Manager is flexible enough to allow you to introduce your own flare and your own take on things. Instead of adapting your processes to Service Manager, you can adapt Service Manager
    to your processes.
The downside, of course, is that with flexibility comes risk. Folks who extend these programs should be pretty familiar with how the underlying platform works. But if you take necessary precautions (follow the guidelines, do regular backups, etc) you can
    reduce the risk significantly.
    That's just my 2 cents :)

  • Managing wired and wireless connections.

I have a client who wants to be able to use a wireless hotspot for backup internet when their main connection fails.
However when the  main internet fails, they can't always use the wireless connection they've set up while still being on the wired LAN. The workstation will ignore the wireless connection and attempt to connect to the internet via LAN.
    1. They need the LAN for networked printers
    2. They want to be able to use the wireless hotspot to connect to the internet.
    3. They want to be able to switch between connections without their users needing to change anything manually other than connecting to the wireless hotspot.
I've been looking but I haven't been able to find any kind of software that manages network connections in this way.
Is anyone able to suggest a solution?

  • What's the difference between Apple TV and direct-connecting an iPad?

I'm thinking about getting Apple TV - but what does Apple TV give me that my iPad doesn't?  I've got an Apple cable that connects my iPad to my big screen already.  What do I gain by getting Apple TV instead?  Please advise - thanks!

Thanks!  Yea, I'm leaning that way and from everything I've read the 'biggest' benefit would be Airplay - and the 5:1 surround in my gameroom (or the 7:1 surround in my screening room).  I don't stream movies - I'm more of a blu ray collector and watch movies that way - so in all probability I wouldn't use Apple TV in the screening room - but there are several other locations where it could be a nice addition.
I do watch some TV shows on my iPAD, and lots of music videos - so perhaps, with Airplay they'll look/sound even better if I push that content to one of the other big screens.
For the most part - whenever I wanted to watch something from my iPad on the big screen, I just connected it to my A/V receiver - pressed play, and enjoyed.  Apple TV would now become that device that's connected to my A/V receiver, and the iPad more of a remote - uncabled.
Again - thanks for the reply; it's proven very helpful.
    Cheers.

  • BI to BPC 7.0 MS version data integration and  direct connectivity?

    Dear  All,
I need some valubale and proper information  about the BI to  BPC 7.0 (Microsoft)integration?
As i have already gone through forum threads and read blogs stil i dint found any solution to our requrirement.
Is it possible to have a direct data transfer between BI to BPC 7.0(MS version)? I understand that data can be extracted from BI cubes into files and then uplod into BPC. Is there any other ways to bring data directly from BI into BPC 7.0?
Any connectors or plugins has been release in the market so far?
As per our understanding right now in the market for BPC 7.0(NW Version) everything is available but for BPC 7.0 microsoft version if any body as implemented  or having any docs or related to that will be great helpful if you can share the same to me.?
IF its not aviailable in the market what could be alternative option to go ahead with the same version?
    Thanks a ton in advance.
    RK.

    Rakesh,
There is nothing delivered within the products that seemlessly integrates data from BI to BPC (MS ver).  Besides the aforementioned good ideas about using open hub there are several 3rd Party companies that have an offering that will integrate data from SSIS packages on MS SQL Server from BI.  Just search the internet  (Xtract IS, iNet-BI, . . .).  They all range in price and functionality.
    Hope this helps.
    Best Regards,
    Kevin

  • Management packs to scom agent server ?

How SCOM agent will get Management Packs from Management server ? Will all Management Packs will get downloaded to all SCOM agent server?
Or how does Management server will come to know only required Management Packs
for agent server? (I heard Management Server  will scan the registry to of agent server to understand the application and requirement , then it sent Management Packs
for agent server , is that correct ? )

On import, a complex and expensive series of operations occur.
The MP is written to a table.
The MP is loaded by the config service and all discovery targets are examined
A list of agents is created based on whether the agent manages a type instance that is a target of a discovery in each new MP.  When this is found to be a match, the config service marks the agent config as stale in memory.
The agent periodically contacts the RMS (config service).  In the response, a "you are stale" flag is included.  THis causes the agent to ask for a resynchronization.
The agent gets a response with all of the state for every type instance being managed, as well as a list of mps and versions and indicators of whether the agents copy of these is stale.
The agent then requests any files it needs and receives them (this is expensive)
The agent then loads each MP, replacing any workflows that are necessary, and starts normal agent processing (discoveries run immediately - this is expensive).
Agent submits new discovery data.  The config service responds with data indicating what the official state of each managed instance sent in the discovery is. (this is expensive)
Each time you create an override and save it, the above is repeated. (this is why it is slow to make online overrides)
