Management Tools for Oracle

Hi Guys,
Is there a consensus view on a decent GUI interface for managing Oracle instances. In particular something equivalent to SQL Server Management Studio - something that allows you to do DBA tasks and write ad hoc queries against the database?
The reason I ask is that I'm just having a play with Enterprise Manager (the web based version) and I've got to be honest - it's pretty hard going. Even something as simple as adding a table is very tedious when compared to SQL Server Management Studio.
I'm just downloading SQL Server Developer to see how that looks but was wondering if there was a de facto standard that lots of people like and use.
Many thanks in advance
Simon
PS - Typing the SQL in by hand is not an option for me
:-)

Hi Simon,
Many thanks for your thoughts. I've heard people say similar things about SQL Server - e.g. if you don't know how to make indexes, filegroups, schemas etc using TSQL, you aren't a proficient DBA. Thing is, I still manage to make a decent wage consulting on SQL Server and I'm sure the same arguments were applied to the Windows command prompt in the past.No Simon, you took me wrong. A proficient DBA is NOT the one who remembers each command by heart and can immediately type it. Heck what is the need of remembering syntaxes, commands when there is whole bunch of information of them over the entire web, in the documentation? But merely knowing that there is a command and does create an index doesn't make /prove anyone as a super-duper dba. Knowing at which stage to apply which command is the trick which differentiates best from the good dbas and certainly from average ones as well. People who say windows is a bad o/s are wrong. If it would be bad, it wouldn't had been used by so many people. Its good that's why it stayed and dominated for so long. Its just the people who use it, they tend to behave it like a bad o/s. A very simple, example, ask any pure winddow admin, what does it mean by mount point and he would be blank as the term never comes across to him since window has made things so simple, there is no need to know all these things. Its hard to make windows do what you want so we tend to adopt whatever it gives to us and there, things start getting different from Linux/Solaris(put any *nix here). Does that mean all window admins are bad? Nope, I know some guys who make window based servers up much efficiently and use its fullest power. But when things are tied to a shiny interface, we tend to use that more and more often, what they say, comfort zone kinda thing happens. That's it.
s I mentioned, I can write decent, very high performing queries, but when it comes to administrator style tasks I tend to want to use a graphical user interface. That's not to say I don't have a good understanding of what the UI is actually doing for me - it's just I don't care to type it all in by hand :-)No admin would like to type things. If they really would had loved typind so much, they probably would had become developers <g> . That's why we make scripts , schedule them , just to make sure that we can sit back, have a cup of coffee and can truly live up to expectations that dba's don't do anything (just kidding).
suppose the best anology I can come up with is if I want to go to the New York Times website, I don't open telnet and do:
GET /default.html HTTP/1.1
Host: www.nytimes.com
I open Firefox and type in New York and then press enter :-)I agree to what you said but doesn't matter how hiteck we may become, how many I's we include in our phone, life, we still have to eat by our hands only and that's the only way to enjoy it too isn't it ;-) .
Now for the Sql Server, Oracle difference in the Management tools, here comes an analogy from me which I give pretty often. Getting married for the first time and making sure that the married life goes smooth itself is a very big and tough task. And if you decide to get married, things only would become tougher. If you really want to make the second marriage a successful one, you need to forget all teh good/bad points of the last partner and have to live with and be happy with the ones of teh second one. If you would keep on comparing, you are going to be ending up screwing up things in a very nice manner. That's what is doing Sql Server in the first place and then oracle or vice-versa. There would be differences, theree would be some good/bad new things but that's what it is and with which you have to live with.
Hope you would have fun learning oracle and surely being over here as well.
Cheers
Aman....

    Hi,
Is there any configlab tool for Oracle CC&B package for confifuration management accross different environments. we can use VSS as version management for java codes and cobol codes in CC&B. But i am unable to identify any config lab tool for configuration management.
Guys please help me out in this.
    Thanks and Regards
    sayantan

    Sayantan,
There is (unfortunately) no silver bullet for your requirement.
Here is a good blog article on the different options available.
    https://blogs.oracle.com/theshortenspot/entry/configlab_versus_bundling_vers
Implementations use variations and combinations of the 3 tools that are available, coupled with 3rd party migration tools (like vss). The strategy for an implementation's development-to-production life cycle will vary based on a multitude of factors. Skill set of the IT shop, what tools they are used to, internal audit procedures, etc.
Hope the article provides some food for thought!

We have a tool profiler in sqlserver,we need the tool which works like profiler...

You can enable tracing at multiple levels using the DBMS_MONITOR package. The following link shows how to enable session tracing: [Application Tracing Tools|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14211/sqltrace.htm#CHDFCGAE]
You can then use a tool like TKPROF or TRCSESS to aggregate the trace data into more readable files for analysis.

  • Searching for a Reporting Tool for Oracle 11g

    Hello,
I have created several OLAP-Cubes with the Analytic Workspace 11.1.0.7.0B on the Oracle Database 11g. Now I need a Tool for Creating some Reporting. I have Oracle BI Spreadsheet Add-In Version 10.1.2.3 for Microsoft Excel. I have installed it and I have a Connection to the Database. But on the Query-Assistent, I can't see my Measures and Dimensions. I guess it is because of the Version.
    My Questions are:
    - Is there any BI Spreadsheet in Version 11?
    - Is there any other Reporting-Possibility with another Tool for Oracle 11g? I couldn't find anything yet.
I am very happy, if there is anyone who can answer my questions.

I have no knowledge of BI publisher but if you install OBIEE then you will have option to install BI publisher also. You can download OBIEE from here.
After installation you can look at following post to see the set up required to access olap cubes.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/olap_biee/index.html
    OBIEE install/user documentation -> http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10415_01/doc/nav/portal_1.htm

  • Web content management tools for enterpise portal

I'm currently trying to research web content management tools for enterprise portal.
    My general requirements are:
    -  Tool should sit on top of the portal/km and not require another landscape infrastructure, in other words we don't need another document management repository, but rather a way an easier interface to KM.
    -  Should be geared towards end-user management of actual content.  In other words IT provides the site framework and the business user handles the rest, with approvals with business unit
    -  Compatible with EP 7.0
My research so far has turned up two possible solutions:
    - Webpage composer delivered by SAP
    - EasyWCM by btexx
Are there any other solutions that people are using which might meet these needs or alternative web content management tools that could live with the portal on the same physical hardware environment?  I have searched this forum and ecohub and have not found much besides this thread which is now almost 4 years old:
    https://forums.sdn.sap.com/click.jspa?searchID=24164203&messageID=448870
    Thank you,
    Stephen

    Hi Stephen
I'm not aware of too many other options than the ones already mentioned here. Also Iu2019m probably not the right person to ask as I have been part of the development team for the KMD product.  So Iu2019m a bit biased on that part.
You could try to have a look at this presentation where other WCM solutions are mentioned (page 5):
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/d07b5354-c058-2a10-a98d-a23f775808a6
However if you are looking for a WCM solution with no extra landscape infrastructure and low initial setup effort you are (in my opinion) down to 3 options (Web Page Composer, Btexxu2019s or KMDu2019s product). I think all of them can be used for external content. Try to have a look at this web site u2013 made entirely with the web page composer:
    http://www.kmd.dk
It was no easy task but it can be done.

  • [Blog] Using VMware vROPs to monitor Oracle Database and WebLogic.  Management Pack for Oracle EM, Hyperic Plugins, or Both?

This blog post provides a suggested methodology for helping users of VMware vROps/vCOps decide which of the existing solutions, the vROps Management Pack for Oracle EM and the VMware vROps Hyperic Plugins for Oracle, should be used to monitor their Oracle workloads.
It’s been a nearly a year since VMware transferred the vCOps Adapter for Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) to Blue Medora and since that transfer Blue Medora has released a number of major updates as well as rebranded it the Blue Medora vROps Management Pack for Oracle EM. Over that same period of time VMware has continued to evolve their Oracle-focused (Oracle Database and WebLogic J2EE) Hyperic agent-based plugins culminating most recently with a October 2014 update to the Oracle Database plugin that provides support for Oracle Database 12c.

  • Replication Management tool in Oracle Db10g Standard Edition....

    Hi,
Where is the Replication management tool can be found in Oracle OEM10g Standard Edition...????
Is this contained only to EM java version.... in Oracle client...????
However , i have a doubt that the EM java version gives the capability for advanced replication.... whereas the standard edition supports only basic replication...Is that correct....???
If the above is true then... how to create an environment which gives the privileged user to select tables , columns to be replicated manually or using the scheduler...????
    Thanks.. a lot

  • Tools for Oracle

    Hi All,
Basically we are looking for Oracle utilities which encompasses the following. Please let me know if anything in the market.
    a) Code Review
    b) Redundancy / Duplication check for code in Packages / Procedures
    c) Proper usage of variables and scope (Local vs. Global)
    d) Any MISC. suggestions regarding Tuning and Performance enhancements of the queries/procedure/ packages involved.
(** Basically we are looking for utilities for Oracle code which are similar to certain Java Optimizer utilities (Jprobe, Jprofiler etc.))
    Thanks in advance
    Deb

Seconded to Billy suggestions. although Mark I eyeball should be run in parallel of a factor of 2, great little tool.
    It Manager: "tune the database"
    DBA: "why, what needs tuning"
    IM: "The plsql code"
DBA: "Why, whats wrong with it"
    IM: "theres loads of it"
    DBA:"hmmm"
No DBA worth his salt would let an adhoc tool at code.
Tuning? Use statspack, ASH, AWR reports, take your top ten hitters, tune them. Next month do the same.
Code duplication? go to your Code repository like visual sourcesafe for example (you do have one dont you), get each developer, get them to go through each object and make sure it tallies with what you have in the database. they should be able to tell from the object doc notes (you did doc each object didnt you).
Proper use of variables? Refer to to your coding standards doc (you do have one dont you), if it specified where to put global and local varialbes and it breaks those standards, get the developers to go through the objects and where it specified it was peer reviewed before submitting and noted in each object header, hang the developer and reviewer.
code review? whats wrong with the code? see variables above.

  • Oracle Identity Manager looking for OracleAS 10.1.3.x

    Hi,
I need to install the following products on 2 servers
Oracle Identity Management Suite (OID, DAS, SSO) as a OracleAS Active-Active Cluster.
    Oracle Identity Manager in Cluster
    Oracle Access Manager in Cluster
    Oracle Virtual Directory in Cluster
    with F5 load balancers
A bit complex configuration, but think i can achieve it. I completed the first task successfully but now I am facing a problem when i wanted to install the Oracle Identity Manager 9.1 on the existing OracleAS cluster. OIM is looking for a 10.1.3.x version of OracleAS where as the Oracle Identity Management suite is shipped with OracleAS 10.1.0.2 version. we went ahead with the installation process as there was no reference of application server version in the Oracle Identity Management Certification matrix and the OracleAS 10.1.3.4 certification document below mentioned that IM 10.1.4.0.1 is shipped with 10.1.3.x version.
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/ias/files/oracle_soa_certification_101310.html
Can anyone guided me how should i go ahead with this.
    Thanks & Regards
    Ramesh GK

Check this OIM on OAS issues
SOA suite is using jdk 1.5.x , Identity Management Suite is using jdk 1.4.x. My advice is to use OC4J from SOA Suite. Open a SR to confirm this. Some OIM required patch for OC4J are only for 10.1.3.x and can't be applied to OC4J from Identity Management Suite, also you can't not use the same database for OIM and IDM repository if you are using multilanguage installation.
