Managing a Big iTunes Library with many iPods, iPad

I have quite a large iTunes Library of about 800 GB  (2 700 music albums in Apple Lossless).  This is much larger than what one iPod Classic can take.  So I change my selections manually once a while.  Recently, I bought another iPod Classic and I will do so with an iPad Air soon.  I want to have different albums selection for each device from my unique library.
I did not find any formal information how to manage this situation.  When I will connect my new iPod Classic (without automatic sync), will I be invited to make new albums selection (that are different from those of my former iPod Classic) ?  In clear, I have around 500 albums in Apple Lossless on my former iPod Classic.  Let say I would like to have a completely different albums selection (of around 500 albums) from my large library on my new iPod Classic.
I hope that I have been comprehensible enough.  This information is very important for me to pursue my goal of introducing new music to a lot of people.

Probably the easiest way would be to have two seperate playlists. One playlist be named something like "iPod 1" and the other would be "iPod 2". Each playlist would have a different set of 500 albums. Then you would only sync the iPod with it's appropriate playlist.

  • I can't re-synchronize my ITune library with my IPod

If your iPod is set to sync automatically with iTunes you need to take care connecting to an empty library. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes for Mac - Keyboard Shortcuts
Once you are safely connected there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

  • To big Itunes library for my Ipod mini

I've got a problem. I just bought my Ipod mini and I'm a novice so I wonder if you need to create a "Library selection" as Itunes suggest when I plug my Ipod in to the computer? I thought I just might create playlists and ad them to my Ipod. My problem is that I haven't figured out how to get the playlists on to my Ipod.

    The option to

Fortunately, it's fairly straightforward when you make your way to the iTunes Edit menu > Preferences > iPod tab.

  • Sharing more than one iTunes library with one iPod

    Hi.
I've tho Mac connected together. I've two different libraries, one for ech one. Well, I'd like to charge my iPod with songs from the two libraries. How can I proceed? I've tried to share the libraries, I can listen to the tracks but no way to transfer to the iPod.
Thanks in advence for your help.
    Regards

If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one library or computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. In this mode you can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
    Syncing Music to iPod
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • How can I manage 1 iTunes library with 2 computers (not on same network)?

I have 1 very large iTunes library in which I am always adding/deleting/editing songs and 2 computers (1 home, 1 laptop). I would like to be able to manage my library with my laptop when I am away from home but also be able to see any changes I made next time I open iTunes on my home computer. I tried home sharing but this seems to be more for computers on the same network. My library is much too big for iCloud. Someone suggested I hold shift when I open iTunes to select a library but even though I can select the library file I want, it doesn't populate iTunes with my changes (or any music for that matter). I'm running XP with the latest version of iTunes (10.7.0.21). Thanks

This describes a work/home scenario.  For home/away use, edit the library directly on the portable backup when away, then sync libraries on your return.
    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans with iTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
As long as your media is organized within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organized) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.
When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behavior has been changed but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entries and import the local content you have on that box.

That really does not work since music is not included in the backup.  See:

  • HT1535 I own an iPhone4, an iPod 3rd generation and an iPad 2. I use the same iTunes library but unfortunately synced iPad with a different computer before syncing to my own. Do I risk losing the films/apps I've downloaded onto my iPad if I sync with my i

I don't want to sync what is on my iPod to my iPad. (I have a 32gb iPod but only 16gb on iPad. The iPod I use mostly for music.) I can't seem to add the films I have downloaded onto iPad to iTunes. If I could do that, I could erase them from iPad to create more storage.
    This is intensely confusing, sorry.

    Question.....

    Answer.....
Yes you will lose the films that you downloaded to the iPad when you sync with your own iTunes unless you transfer the purchases into your own iTunes library. Were these movies that you purchased? If so, you might be able to download them again for free. Do you have multiple computers that you sync from or is this someone else's purchased content?
You can select whatever you want to sync to all of your devices in iTunes, you do not have to sync the same content to all device.

I have 1 itunes library with a phone and ipod linked to it.  My daughter just got a touch.  She would like to have some of my music downloaded into her touch.  How can I do that without having her linked to my library?

Sync all the devices to the same computer.
If you do not want her apps, then simply do not select them to sync to your device.
Each device will only sync what you select to sync.

    Try:
Close the Camera app in the multitasking bar, then try again.
