Managing apps on multiple ipad devices

Hi, I work @ all college in AU. We are implementing ipads as a study tool. Initially the ipads will be set up by the college, then distributed to the students to keep.
My question is about how to manage apps for so many devices. For example we have 2 apps that need to be installed for 150 units to begin with. This could get quite messy I would think. Has anyone had any experience with this sort of volumes? Any and all input would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking at setting up a class set of 20 iPads for use in a new language centre in AU. I want to offer students flashcard, language specific software and playlists of listening examples, PDF textbooks created in school and the like.
Currently, I cannot find a decent syncing system either.
http://www.ipadcart.info offers a charging rack, but nothing for actually syncing a full set of iPads.
Unfortunately, given that at the moment you are only able to sync apps across up to 5 devices, it looks like I will have to have every iPad hanging off a single machine which will have an individual iTunes account associated with EVERY iPad. Which will require me to buy a copy of each app MANUALLY for each iPad, rather than be able to order 20 copies of iKana and 20 copies of iKanji and the like.
From what I can tell there is no easy way to create a single iPad "image" and copy it across to a whole set of iPads. We need a carbon copy cloner-type app for iPad/iTunes.
Or we need some kind of lab management solution from Apple.

  • How can I install one app on multiple iPads at the same time?

We have a volume purchasing account, but when purchasing an app we get multiple serial numbers that all seem to need to be entered individually. The iPhone config Utility will not sync multiple iPads at the same time. Am I missing something? This cannot be the method for mass deployment, it seem too complicated.

You can do a  backup of you iPad then restore the backup to many devices.

  • I have "my story" app on multiple ipads at our school.  It now appears as if this app will function on some ipads and not others.  Is this because the app was pulled off of the itunes store?

I have "my story" app on multiple ipas at our school.  It now appears as though the app will only function on a few of the ipads.  Is this because itunes pulled the app from the store?

For any iPad exhibiting this, try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray before doing the reset.
Is this the app? https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/my-story-story-creator-for/id449232368?mt=8. It appears to be available.

  • How do you sync the free iWork and iLife apps to multiple supervised devices?

So, I have a number of 4th gen iPads that are eligible for the free iWork and iLife update. I downloaded all the apps manually to one device, but was wondering how you can do this with multiple devices at once. If I try to add the apps in Configurator it asks for codes, because we have these apps downloaded already and on older devices. Configurator does not dinstinguish between the older and newer devices.
I tried making a backup of the first iPad that has the apps and pushing that out on Configurator, but the apps did not transfer. Do these need to be side loaded? Is there another way? I am trying Settings > iTunes and App Store > Sync apps across devices, and having all ipads logged in with the same account. But, no sync of apps yet, and not even sure that will work...
    Ideas?

Probably sould just do them individually.

  • One non-VPP app on multiple iPads -- what's the current best practice?

So I've been playing around with Apple Configurator and think it has the potential to be useful in deploying multiple iPads (in this case, 18) to a client.  I've been able to configure one iPad, take a backup of it, and then easily deploy that backup to 2 iPads.  I've also been able to automatically install free apps... to a point.
In this particular test I set up an old version of Pandora I had on my Mac to be installed on my test iPads.  I intentionally chose an old version of the app to see what would happen when it needed an update, assuming that it would ask for the personal iTunes account I originally used to download it.  And sure enough, my assumption was vindicated -- after this iPad was prepared by Apple Configurator, I went to the App Store, attempted to update Pandora, and was prompted to enter my personal iTunes account password.
I figure that the next step would be to create an iTunes account specifically for downloading apps intended for deployment to clients, and I'm guessing I should just create individual iTunes accounts for each client, download the required apps, and configure each device to use that iTunes account.  But is this viable?  Is there some limit to how many devices you can associate with one iTunes account?  Is this really the best they could do?

This is a challenge.  On our enterprise owned non-shared devices we ask the user, if they need to install apps that are non VPP, to use a personal iTunes account.  Though the devices are owned by the enterprise, and have enterprise security policies on them, we allow the users to put personal music photo's etc on them, and back them up on home, not work computers, with iTunes.  I think most users of non shared devices feel they are "personal" devices and treat them as such.  We do put an IPCU profile on them, and do require encryption through Exchange Server policies.  Shared devices, where 1 device might be used by a number of employees in one day (say in an Emergency Department for registrars), we associate with a enterprise created iTunes account that has the same name as the Exchange account used to attach the Exchange security policy to the device.  We use restrictions on these devices to block app purchases, safari etc.  In the case of the shared device, free apps would be installed by IT using the enterprise created iTunes account.  We are in the process of getting an MDM which we expect to simplify all of this.  My opinion ( for what it's worth) is that Apple is  becoming much more enterprise aware and is moving toward making the scenarios described easier to deal with.  iOS devices started as consumer centric devices but are being adopted in large numbers now by business, BYOD or otherwise.

  • Do I need to upgrade my CC Account to create a folio app for non-iPad devices?

    Hello,
I have never created a DPS app, but have been researching this for the last 4 weeks.  From what I understand, I can create a DPS app for iPad using a single edition or a multifolio app.  If I want to create a DPS app for any other device, I would need to create a multifolio app.  I have only a Creative Cloud account, but I believe that I will need a Professional or Enterprise account to create multifolio apps.  Is there another way that I could create apps for Android, iPhone, etc devices without having to upgrated my account?
    Thank you.

Your research and understanding is correct. If you want to use DPS to target anything other than an iPad you need Professional or Enterprise edition.

  • Managing media on multiple iPads using one computer.

I am working with a client who wants to use iPads in their showroom so their sales force can show product info and videos to their customers. I need to find a way to upload the content they want to show onto multiple iPads from a single computer. Is it possible to do this with the iPad? I thought only one device could be registered to a computer at a time. Any thoughts?

New companies are entering the sync and charge market.
Lock N Charge has an new 32 iPad cart and a new 16 USB handheld sync and charge unit.
Ergotron has introduced an inexpensive 16 USB module that can be a desktop syn and charge or stack into a cart format for up to 48 iPad Sync and Charge.

  • Licensing of apps for multiple iPads in an enterprise environment

I have 21 iPads in an enterprise environment, syncing to one iPad.  Am I violating licensing terms.? These are 21 iPads used by 21 board members on each Friday.  Do I need to purchase this app 21 times?  If so how?

Yes, you may be. The applicable terms of sale are these:
(ii) If you are a commercial enterprise or educational institution, you may download and sync an App Store Product for use by either (a) a single individual on one or more iOS Devices you own or control or (b) multiple individuals, on a single shared iOS Device you own or control. For example, a single employee may use the Product on both the employee's iPhone and iPad, or multiple students may serially use the Product on a single iPad located at a resource center or library.
If these iPads are under your own control and you just loan them out for the board meetings, then that might fall under clause (a), though I'm no lawyer and I don't speak for Apple.
If these iPads are kept by the board members for their use, then your company needs to purchase the app twenty-one times, and the only way at present to do that is through twenty-one different iTunes Store accounts. So each board member should probably buy through his or her own iTunes Store account, and get reimbursed by the company if appropriate. I know this is awkward; perhaps Apple will come up with a better mechanism in the future.
    Regards.

  • Managing apps for multiple users in one iTunes library

Hi - my wife and I both have iPhones and separate iTunes ID's.  We both share music in one iTunes library and sync to the same library.  We also backup our phones to that same computer.  We have some apps on both phones (for example, Pandora) and when we backup/restore our phones, iTunes apparently will put "my" version of apps on her phone and "her" version of apps on my phone.  Afterwards, when I update apps, my phone will ask for BOTH my iTunes ID AND her iTunes ID.   Similarly, her phone asks for both her ID and my ID.  Presumably, this also uses two of my FIVE authorized devices, which is also a problem.
My question is how can we manage our apps separately on iTunes so that we can get rid of this annoying behavior?  It is very common for families to share one common iTunes library, so I don't see why this would be unsupported.
    Thanks for any assistance!

  • HT204266 how to put an app on multiple ipad

I have a Ipad mini and Ipad how do I get the apps I buy on both?

use the same apple ID for both.
then you can download hte same app and put it on both devices at once.
There is a setting in iTunes to 'automatically download' which means when you purchase an app on one it'll appear on the other one.

  • How to test the app on my Ipad device?

I'd like to know how to test the app and if it's strictly necessary to have a developer liscense to test it or if it's only necessary to make the app available in the Appstore.
    Thanks!

You need a paid dev account to test on a device.

  • Am I able to legally purchase one app and put it on multiple ipads?

I am using over 30 ipad 2's for a high school and elementary learning support group. Some apps will be specialized for that certain person...others will be using the same apps for algebra 1 and geometry...social studies and geography...can i put a purchased app on multiple ipads?

You are getting a lot of replies stating that you can download the apps again for free - but ....
You can download it to as many devices as you want for your own personal use on your own personal devices. What you want to do is a little bit different and I'm not so sure that free downloads falls into this category.
You should probably look at this web site. Apple App Store Volume Purchasing .
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/education/
Be careful - for your own sake and for the sake of the school or institution, that you are allowed to download these apps again. Free downloads are for personal use on your devices all using the same Apple ID.

  • IPad/iPhone Backup/Management App for PC?

I'm fed up with the massive headache that's called iTunes.   I don't want a Backup/Management App for my iPad and iPhone that is music centric.  I have a lot of valuable information, applications, photos, videos, and documents on my iPad and iPhone that needs to be effectively backed up and managed.   And yes, I want to back up/management my music too.  I want a well written app that does it all.   Is there an application that does this?
    Dan.

Thanks for answering.  I don't like the answer, but it's what I expected.
