Managing badges on 10.7.5

Hello!
I've got an older MacBook laptop, and am running the highest I can go on the iOS which is 10.7.5.  I've got badges showing up on my tray icons, i.e., Mail shows a 3 on it's upper right corner.  However, I don't have 3 emails waiting for me there.
I'd like to turn them off, but don't have a Notifications Center on this iOS.  I can't seem to figure out where to go to manage them.  Any clues?
Thanks so much!  --Burma

Mobile Documents **is** in the ~/system folder, but that is hidden by default.  Can it be the case that it's actually there but it's hidden from you?

  • Data loss -- managed photos mis-badged as missing referenced photos

I always import all photos as managed photos, and never use referenced photos. Yesterday, I noticed that the last 29 photos from a group of 96 photos imported Feb 18 were badged as "The referenced image’s master file has not been found."
Indeed, although I had worked on many of these images in Aperture shortly after importing them, I could now only view a large but low-res thumbnail.
Weirdly, when I right-click on one of these images and select "Manage Referenced Files..." I get a message that "The selection doesn't use any referenced files." I get the same message when I select "Manage Referenced Files..." from the File menu with the entire project selected.
Using the Finder, as well as the find and locate commands in the terminal, I have verified that the missing images are not on my main or backup hard drives (unfortunately, I use a simple rsync script for backup, and I didn't discover this problem until after the deletions had propagated to my backup).
The other 67 photos imported at the same time (same import group) seem fine, and, using the Finder, I can locate all of them in the Aperture library.
To test one user error scenario, I imported some test photos into the Aperture library and then relocated the masters to the desktop. I then quit Aperture, deleted the photos on the desktop, and relaunched Aperture. As expected, the test photos had the same "The referenced image’s master file has not been found" badge, but when I right clicked and selected "Manage Referenced Files..." I got the expected dialog, unlike when I select the same option for the missing 29 photos.
    Any ideas what went wrong?
    G5 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Thanks for responding...
It sounds pretty odd. First try to rebuild the
database...as was suggested (Option>CMD on launch of
    Aperture).
I will try this eventually. But I want to get some insight first, in case this could create more problems than it solves. I am also holding off on updating to 10.4.9 for the same reason.
This might help. If not, try to make an
adjustment on one of the images. This will force the
thumbnail to redraw. If the adjustments aren't
available for that particular image, then the image
    is really offline somewhere.
I am unable to make any adjustments on these images.
I assume you went into your Library "Show Package
Contents" to confirm they are missing. If not, try
    that.
Yes, the images are not in the folder with the other images from that import. Further, I used the unix 'find' and 'locate' commands to search my entire hard drive and backup drive, and the images were not found.
    Can you Export the image?
That was how I first stumbled on this problem -- I tried to export and got an error message that "Versions with unavailable master images cannot be exported."
The weird thing is that when I try and get the 'Managed referenced files...' dialog, Aperture claims that "The selection doesn't use any referenced files" -- that tells me this data loss might be the result of a bug and not user error.

  • Disconnected managed images after data recovery

First of all, hello to all of you willing to help me,
I am on a trip around the globe with limited internet access and only my mac, a camera and now three external hdd (and my wife G). Hence, not many options to deal with technical problems. Further more am I a fairly new, meaning un-experinced aperture user.
    The problem:
After b-tree header error, DiskWarrior usage, relocation of aperture library (and all other restorable data) to new external hdd is aperture not willing to identify the current location of most of the pix I once had in the library (10.000+). The pictures in one "project" and all sub folders/albums are connected and usable as ever. The rest shows a little badge in the right hand corner with a red line crossing a square from the bottom left to the upper right corner.
Before the b-tree header error, I had all "masters" as "managed images".
Now most images are still physically in the library when I control-click on the library and take a look into the package.
I tried to reconnect the pictures within aperture. But this is not do able. If I select more then one image and follow the instructions from the manual it wont give me the option to reconnect the pix. If I choose one image - it works. But searching through the directories for 10.000+ pictures by hand can't be the final solution.
Moreover, the repair library option does not start when I try it with alt-cmd-dbl click.
What shall I do? Any solutions?
Thanks for any help in advance!
    P.S.
if I did not use the correct terms in english forgive me please. I work on a german language setting.

First of all it means you have had your masters Referenced, and now connection has been lost, for now.
Did you think they were Managed? Sounds like you need to reconnect to the source drive for your masters, either one or more?

  • Managing Metadata in Digital Libraries within Lightroom for Upload to WordPress

I have been researching SEO tips for my clients to build their image libraries and fill in all of the pertinent meta data. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find a workable solution to categorize the images and retain the metadata after uploading to WordPress.
Specifically, I need to know how to add file properties (in a program for a PC or Mac) to your image libraries before you upload them. It appears that Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Bridge and Microsoft PhotoGallery do not retain the alt text and captions after importing into WordPress. Also, there is no access to an 'Alt Text' field in Lightroom. I entered it in PhotoGallery. I also added Lightroom Plug-ins from Rob Cole:
    rc Metadata Extensions
    rc Custom Metadata
    robcole.com
However, I have not been successful in customizing them.
Upon further research, I have found another way, but it requires paying for a subscription based service (Uploading Photos to WordPress with a Lightroom Publish Service):
    http://havecamerawilltravel.com/photographer/lightroom-wordpress-publish-service
Another tidbit was the workflow by Scot Kelby, which discusses entering the metadata before uploading to UPI wire service (requires Photo Mechanic software):
    http://scottkelby.com/2012/my-sports-photography-workflow-so-far/
So, I am still searching for the complete solution. Technically speaking, it sounds like it is an issue with WordPress to read the data in the image and map it to the alt text and caption fields. The WordPress plugin appears to allow the creation of new fields in the MySQL database and create a function to route the metadata. I am surprised that this had not been resolved by professional archivers.
This is a task I have left to my client and I am in the process of building a cheat sheet for SEO labeling of images, which is also helpful in placing them in documents and presentations. Advice and best practices would be welcome.
    Thank you.

I'm looking for some feedback as to the benefits of allowing Aperture to manage those videos.
Aperture was not designed as, and does not excel as, a video storage, editing, and publishing workshop. My guess is that video was added in because it could be, not because users wanted it. My experience was that video tended to mung-up the works with 3.0. One of the upgrades has resolved those issues, but video remains nothing more than a limp tangent away from Aperture's core.
As as side question, if I were to continue managing video within Aperture, does it make sense in anyone's opinion to keep those videos in the same projects, etc as my image files?
Absolutely. Set one of each view's metadata overlays to show badges. Video has its own badge. Also, you might set the Poster Frame of each clip to show some text (the title, for instance) as a visual indication that the Preview is a video.

  • Intel Core Duo case badge

I've managed to find original Intel Core Duo case badges, just wondering if they would leave any markings on the iMac should I decide to remove it at a later date? Perhaps someone with PC building expertise who knows more about the material these badges are made of could comment.
    Cheers.

If you remove it later, it will most likely leave an adhesive backing/residue on the case of the iMac. Ive found this out from playing around with badges on PC's. You can get the adhesive off, but it takes a good amount of scrubbin'.

  • Managing files and vaults

Im in real trouble understanding this. I have a mac pro with 2 internal drives and 1 external. I want to have my entire managed files in the apperature library with 2 vaults. 1 on the extra internal drive and 1 on the external. My problem is when I import a raw file (I only shoot RAW) into apperature a project is created and a badge is created saying that the file(s) are referenced. The meta data shows the master being in the project so Im confused. Im also freaked out because I understand that the vaults do not retain referenced images. Is there a way to view the contents of a vault without doing a library restore? How can one be comfortable with these vaults if you cant view them. If I double click it apperature opens but its my regular library. So what I have done is selected every file 7k+ and consolidated the masters (copy) and then updated the vault which took a while so that kind of confirms my fear. The badges went away. any thoughts or a better way?

It sounds as though you're missing the option, in the Import pane, to move the images into the Aperture library. That will make them "managed," which will mean they're including in the Vault. If you leave them "referenced" they're not in the Vault and Aperture won't do anything at all about backing them up -- that will be up to you.
If your images are all referenced (they don't all have to be one or the other), what Aperture puts in the Vault is all the work you do on the images, in Aperture -- a set of recipes for how to process the images for display etc, not the images themselves.
All this is covered in the manual and, better, on Bagelturf:
    http://homepage.mac.com/bagelturf/aparticles/ref/ref.html
    for example.

  • How to remove OTA Settings badge after delete of IOS 8.0.1 software update from storage

Running iOS 8 I had downloaded and not installed IOS 8.0.1 software update.  A "1" Badge appears as expected on my Settings icon.  I then removed the software from storage.  Settings->General->Usage->Manage Storage but the badge was not removed.  Things I have already tried that did not work:
    - Checked for software update
    - Rebooted phone

So with the release 8.0.2 the badge went away once I updated.
I did however download, watching it until it completed.  Then chose "LATER" before the timer ran out.
Then went back to install it.  I am not sure if forcing later is needed, but I wanted to make sure it would force it to update the badge to "1" once I went to install it.  If someone else who has the problem tries it without choosing "LATER" please update the thread for others to let them know if it was needed.

  • Better library management & offline files

Having recently converted from Aperture (mostly on account of more fluid editing, more intuitive brushes [I can go into detail if desired], and IMHO better image quality for my main camera), I do miss one aspect of Aperture's file management: the fact that the hierarchy of "projects" and folders that I see within the program can (though need not) be decoupled from the physical file organization.  This means I can start a library with, e.g., all photos arranged in folders according to date, and all on my local disk initially.  I can then select an arbitrary subset of the files (e.g., as the result of a search) and "relocate" those files off my local disk and onto a server.  The key here is that in the hierarchy that I have created inside Aperture (and hopefully one day Lightroom), the photos still appear in the same place as before I relocated them!  (There's just an optional badge in the right corner telling me that the photo is "referenced"; this also similarly indicates when a photo is currently offline.)
In Lightroom, the only way I have managed to simulate something vaguely equivalent is to have two hierarchies, one on the local disk and one on the server.  So I might have a folder ONLINE/2010/august/19 which I could then move (in toto) to SERVER/2010/august/19.  But for one, unless I remember which photos have moved offline, I now have to look in two different places in my hierarchy.  Moreover, it only really makes sense for entire folders; moving individual photos seems like a recipe for massive confusion.  Ugh.
Note that I am not suggesting that Lightroom store files in a proprietary folder hierarchy ("managed" in Aperture parlance), but I really do like the ability to have the physical location distinct from the "logical" organization I have created within the program. This is just an additional level of indirection internal to the database, and oughtn't be that hard to implement --- and compared to Lightroom's current approach, it is way more flexible when it comes to managing large libraries IMHO.
Oh, and incidentally, if a photo has gone offline, Aperture indicates that fact via a discreet little icon (which can be turned off).  Lightroom insists on splashing "This file is offline" all across the preview.  It's a useful message, to be sure, but if I just want to show someone the previews of some pics that happen to be offline, I'd like to be able to turn that message off so I can see the entire picture.
Anyway, add the ability to "relocate" without changing the "virtual" hierarchy of folders, and let me turn off that annoying message for offline files, and I'll be in heaven.  And major kudos on the improvements in image quality in Lightroom 3!

Use collections. They are the equivalent of your projects and albums.

  • Yellow Badge showing up in imported library

I recently imported a managed library from a MBP to a Mac Pro, and roughly 10-15% of images are now showing the yellow badge w/ exclamation point. Images have always resided in a managed library on MBP. I understand what the badge signifies, but need insight as to how to resolve?

The library thinks those images are referenced. Could you have possibly without knowing it at some point imported or made some images as referenced?
I would start by going back to the MBP and running a search for referenced masters even if you're sure that you never made any masters referenced. If that comes up negative you could either try running the Aperture Troubleshooting steps or else try moving the library again. How did you move the library btw?

  • Why is the badge number removed?

I have notifications enabled in my mobile Flex application and notifications are working fine, but, the Air SDK seems to remove the "badge" number automatically before the invoke (and activate) events are fired.  It's even noted as the standard behavior here: http://blogs.adobe.com/airodynamics/2012/05/29/push-notifications-supp ort-in-ios/
Not sure how it was determined that this logic was appropriate, which is obviously business logic and not normal behavior, but, I don't see a workaround to override.
I want to manage the badge numbers in the app, not have the Flex SDK decide when to remove the badge.  If you look at ANY application that uses the badge intelligently, you'll see it isn't removed when the app is fired up.
I'm looking for a workaround to set the badge back to it's original state, however, I don't think it's possible, since it looks like this is cleared before invoke/activate events.
Anyone know how this can be "fixed"?  I don't even see a way using ANEs (which I'm using to get/set the badge).
FYI, I posted this in the Flex community also, not sure which is more appropriate for this question.

Well, as you point out, this is by design, so this is the typical "open a bug report and ask for votes" situation. I guess this was made because Adobe should otherwise have designed an extra API to validate the notification, or to control the badge number, which is rather specific to iOS (although notifications are only supported on iOS anyway...).
What I've done in the past is get the payload data (in the app launched or the notification received event), get the set badge number, and if I still need the badge number place it again through any of the available ANEs out there.

  • Managing videos in Aperture

I've been importing videos from my PAS's and iPhone into Aperture. I'm looking for some feedback as to the benefits of allowing Aperture to manage those videos. It seems as though when I try to upload a video from Aperture to my MobileMe Gallery, the video doesn't work. I have to export it first and then upload the video via QuickTime in order to get it to work.
Also, if videos don't support IPTC metadata, why are the fields eligible? Is it worth adding metadata to video files in Aperture?
As as side question, if I were to continue managing video within Aperture, does it make sense in anyone's opinion to keep those videos in the same projects, etc as my image files? I have a smart album that holds just video, but it gets confusing (aside from the little video icon) when viewing images in the different views as to what is video and what is a photo.
    Thanks

  • Managed vs Referenced vs Dups vs Junk

I try to keep all of my photos in Aperture, either as Managed or Referenced.  I believe 95%+ are Managed and the others Referenced.  I had some issue some time ago that forced me to have some of the Photos as Referenced.  How can I tell what photos are Referenced.
I have also accumulated quite a few jpeg files on my main drive.  I believe most of them are in my Aperture library, but don't know what is and is not.  I want to clean things up and recover space.  Is the best way to figure what is not in Aperture is to import all of them and check the box don't import duplicates.  Then when done delete all of them.  In theory a lll my jpeg files on my main drive are in Aperture, EXCEPT...  As per the first question I want to make sure I don't delete Referenced files.
Am I On the right track of what is the best way to get all of the jpeg files into Aperture if they are not and free up space
    Jon

Typically referenced files have a badge on them which indicates that status. As far as using Aperture for all the photos on your HD, and strategies for that, it's harder for me to say. Again you can used the badges to see if they're referenced or not, I'd suggest using that as a guide.

  • How can I tell whether a project has managed or referenced images

    Hi all,
    Another noob question.
I started working with Aperture and imported about 20GB of photos from my hard drive into one big project. But I can't remember whether I imported them as managed or referenced images. I want to clean up my drive and delete one set of these if they're duplicates.
Is there an easy way to determing if the images in the Library are managed or referenced? I've looked all over for an answer, but can't find one.
    Thank you!

The "badges" in the lower right corner of each image will tell you if the image is a "referenced" image.
See this page for an explanation of the badges: http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=11%26se ction=9%26tasks=true
The badge icon will either be a small rectangle (which represents your photo) with an arrow (indicating that the real photo is elsewhere -- aka "referenced", or it will the rectangle will have a red slash through it, meaning it's a referenced image but the master is currently offline.
There's a third possible icon... which is yellow warning triangle (has a "!" in it) with the arrow. This means the referenced master was not found (e.g. the Mac can find the filesystem & folder, but your image is not there.) This means someone decided to delete or move images in the filesystem -- bypassing Aperture.
On a related note... it is possible to change your mind about whether you want images to be "referenced" vs. "managed". The "Aperture" -> "File" -> "Relocate Master..." will allow you to pick a folder on the hard drive and Aperture will copy the masters to that location -- converting a "managed" image into a "referenced" image. The "Aperture" -> "File" -> "Consolidate Master..." will do the opposite... it will convert a referenced image to a managed image, but does offer the choice of whether the "copy" vs. "move" (e.g. do you want to leave a copy of the image out in the filesystem which is no longer associated with Aperture vs. have the only copy of the master living inside the Aperture library.)

  • File management - changing "managed" to "referenced"

I've imported several thousand images as managed files and would like to change them to referenced to conserve disk space.
What is the easiest way to do this? And can it be done without disrupting the order of my folder/project hierarchy?
    Thanks,
    M

    1. Select the images.
    2. File>Relocate Masters...
    3. Tell it where to move the masters to, including a sub-folder format if you want.
    4. There is no step 4.
You'll see little alias badges added to the images in the Viewer pane, apart from that you won't see any functional difference within Aperture, assuming the HD with the referenced files on is mounted.

  • Help! I managed to create 4 libraries in Aperture!

I am a total Mac newbie. I downloaded the Aperture trial and just purchased the program. Installed it and tried to move the Trial Library and the iPhoto libraries and now have duplicate libraries.
I want to migrate from iPhoto to Aperture...there is no reason to keep iPhoto right?
So...how do I fix my libraries?

Until you get more familiar with Aperture i suggest you keep iPhoto. It sounds like you may not have a lot of images to work on. Because Aperture is a bit of a minefield to begin with, and it takes a while to gain the knowledge.
It is a simple matter to delete the unwanted libraries. However you need to be sure about how you did the import to Aperture. If you made the choice to leave the master images in iPhoto then it is safe to use the Finder, get to the Pictures Folder, highlight Aperture then click the drop down window to reveal some options, one of which is Delete. Delete managed images and they are gone for ever.
If the images are still Viewable in iPhoto its a good bet they are referenced.
You also get a badge on the bottom of the images in Aperture telling they are referenced files. Try hitting the U or Y key, the show or hide image information but this is customisable. Allan
