Managing data files on Zen Xtra 6

I'm thinking of buying a Zen Xtra 60Gb in order to house and use my music collection, but also to act as a backup from my notebook pc.
The Xtra's manual makes some reference to data files - but will this work? Does Windows XP recognise it as another dri've, and can I just upload and download using Windows Explorer?
Please let me know what you think.
Thank you.
Stephen, Cape Town, South Africa.

You cannot "drag and drop" files as metioned here with this player. If that iss what you mean. So you could not back it up like that. But i do beli've you can still put files and documantation on the player.

• Trouble Transferring Data Files From Zen Xtra to Computer...HELP

Hello to all technical-savvy people out there in computer land, I'm hoping you can help me somehow, as I am frustrated beyond belief.
I have a Creative Nomad Jukebox, Zen Xtra, 30 GB. I used it for, obviously, listening to MP3's while I was out of the country in Australia, and I also used it to store data...all of my digital pictures and videos. When I got back to Chicago, I was able to download all the drivers and software onto my dad's computer from online, and was able to successfully transfer everything from my Zen Xtra onto the computer.
I am now at my mom's, and trying to do the exact same thing to her PC and to her laptop....neither of them want to cooperate with me. The computer recognizes the device, and can recognize the data, but it is unable to transfer the information from the device to the computer. I have done the following:
Downloaded the drivers/software
Restarted the computer (plenty of times)
Rebooted the Zen Xtra
Firmware upgrade
And I still can't transfer. I want to show my mom the pictures desperately, and it's realllly frustrating me. If anyone can help me out, my email is [email protected]][email protected]
Thank you,
Sheryl

If it worked with the exact same drivers/software on one PC but not another, this suggests a USB incompatibility (especially as you've tried a firmware upgrade). It's not clear whether this is Creative's drivers and/or certain USB chipsets, but issues do seem to exist for some people with certain combinations of hardware.
Out of interest, have you tried a disk cleanup? To access the Rescue Mode hold down the play button and KEEP it held down, press the tiny reset switch once, and KEEP the play button held down until the player boots into the Rescue Mode. Choose Disk Cleanup from the menu. Note: Disk cleanup should not remove your tracks. It searches through the disk for files and rebuilds the index, and can be useful for correcting any strange behaviour.

• Can't transfer Files from Zen Xtra 30

Hi,

I can transfer files (let's take movies (700mb)) to my Zen Xtra 30gig.
When i want to transfer them back it says that there is not enough space available...
there is 20 gig free space on my mp3 and more then 80gig on my pc.
anyone got the same problem or can help me?
thx in advance

maybe good to know: i'am able to transfer small music files from and to my MP3.
Only the "big" data files fail

• QUestion about the Explorer for Data Files on Zen X

I would like to put some of my school document files and architectural drawings onto the Zen Xtra as a Hard Dri've, but do I need to install the CD that came with it before I can actually put files onto it's

Hey,
Unfortunately, the Zen does not show up as a dri've when you plug it into the computer (it's not just the xtra, the touch doesn't either), I understand the plight that you're going through. You will need to use the intallation disk to install Nomad Explorer because you can do a transfer like that. I shows up as an item in my computer, Once it finds the player there will be a music folder and a data folder, just open the data folder and drag and drop. Hope this hel
ps.
I have a school laptop where all my files are but unfortunately I don't have admin rights so I can't intall the software/drivers so I use my home network and cds as well as my flash dri've to move any new files over to my home desktop to transfer to my zen. It works well for a weekly backup, that sort of thing...Sorry but you'll have to use the install disk. As long as your an admin, no prob.

Note: if you don't have the install disk visit Nomadworld.com and you can download Nomad ExplorerMessage Edited by wilco99 on 0-9-2005 09:54 PM

• Safing the files from Zen xtra

Hello,
my Zen Xtra mp3-player starts only in the rescue mode.
The following happened:
The mp3 player was no longer recognized by Windows XP. I have therefore extended the HDD and plugged directly to a PC. The file format has been designated as unknown. I have copied the files from the disk with Ontrack. I then safely removed the HDD and replugged into the mp3 player.
problem : I can not open the saved files.
problem 2: Now start the mp3-player only in rescue mode.
On the HDD I have nothing deleted or changed.
My Question is:
Is it possible to restore the files from mp3-player back somehow?
Thank you very much,
longhan

Maybe you are not understanding this. The file system is unique to the Zen Xtra. The only way it can be read is on a dri've that is INSIDE the player loaded with the same firmware as when you transfered them. Then you transfer them back on to the player. Like I said I don't know if it will work since I have not done it. If the dri've is bad you will have to install a working one anyway. You have already copied the files from it. If it is still good formatting>cleanup>rebooting will be the only way to attempt to get it working without changing it out.So you won't be losing anything. It will work or it won't.

• Problem Retrieving DATA files from Zen To

Has anybody else had this problem?
I moved a bunch of data files to my zen touch. My computer hardri've
failed and now I want to copy the data back.
BUT when I try to do it, I get an error message that I can't remove
the data files.
I called tech support once and they had me "clean" the hardri've --
didn't work. Then he recommended JBHTTP. I downloaded that
(free) and it does work, but I can't remove the files <EM>within the file</EM>
<EM>structure</EM> -- and only one at a time.
This is better than nothing, but it will take a long time to remove
all 3000+ files.
I found a recommendation for NotMad on the web, but the free
version will not do data transfers, and I don't want to pay for it
if it isn't going to work.
Has anyone had any similar problems? Any solutions? Any
suggestions?
Please help. I need it.
<FONT face="Comic Sans MS" color=#336600 size=4>JT

I believe via Xtreamer, in the trial version of Notmad, you can also download data files. But it sounds like the same process as JBHTTP i.e. slow and one-by-one.
I've seen before that new drivers and firmware update can fix this. I've also seen that new drivers have broken data retrieval, and reverting back to the install CD drivers have fixed it. It's worth trying.
It's a good idea to check data retrieval on a device once you've copied some files over, just to test. Also never trust important files (audio or data) to an MP3 player as the sole source.

• Data File Management on SAN & RAID

Hi everyone,
this is more a question for some generic feedback rather than a particular problem. I'm advising on a system which runs 10g, Archiving, Flashback and Standby on a really fast machine. The whole database, which currently is some 5GB, runs pretty much of an 40GB SGA :)
When i started working with Oracle we managed data files very detailed and paid much attention to disk placements, that was back at 8i. Today we have NAS, SAN and RAID systems which make I/O tracking a lot harder. This particular system runs an HP storage system, which runs virtual RAID's and everything appears under just 1 mount point in the OS and to the DB.
I'm aware of the standard rules, e.g. Logs on RAID10 etc., but i'm just wondering how, everyone of you out their setting up production systems, usually deal with the placement of DB Files, Log Files, Archive File and Flashback Files on today's low end or enterprise class Storage Systems?
If you need a particular problem to answer ..... the issue here is that IT says it's not the storage system, but out of 13h database time i have over 3h log file sync and write wait events.
Thanks.

Well the first thing I'd do with a 5GB database is not run a 40GB SGA.
But to your question ... I like to place my files so that, hypothetically, I can lose a disk shelf not just a disk, and that in so doing if I lose storage I can lose the database but not its associated backups, archived redo logs and redo logs. Or, if I lose the backups I still have a running database.
And 1 LUN is almost never the right answer to any question if performance is an issue.
Also familiarize yourself with Clos networks and create multiple paths from everywhere to everywhere. This means that blades and 1U servers are almost never the right answer to a database question.

Is it possible to transfer files from Zen Xtra to computer whitout drivers installation ? I've got Windows XP.

No, not until the MTP firmware is ready.

• Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra - cannot install firmware - PC says device "not connected&qu

Hi everyone,?Below is a message I've just sent to Customer Support, but I thought I'd also post it here in case anyone has any words of wisdom. Thanks in advance for your help. -- - Dear Madam or Sir,?Yesterday, I tried to connect my Zen Xtra to my PC to transfer some songs from Windows Media Player . WMP produced an error message stating that my PC had a driver for my Zen Xtra which is not supported by WMP. [This was the first time I had tried to Sync my Zen Xtra with WMP.]?I visited www.creative.com and tried to install the latest firmware for my Zen Xtra. The installation of the firmware froze and remained frozen for over an hour. Now the only thing that my Zen Xtra displays is Rescue Mode v.3. I cannot install any firmware at the moment, because the installation wizard keeps stating that my Zen Xtra is not connected to my PC. However, it IS connected and Windows XP detects it up as a "portable storage device." I have completely uninstalled all Creative products on my PC and reinstalled them using my original installation CD, but this has not helped matters. I cannot find any helpful articles in your Knowledge Base. I would be very grateful if you could provide some assistance in this matter. I have had several years of excellent usage from my Zen Xtra and I am extremely annoyed by this latest development. Not only did the firmware upgrade process require me to delete all the data on my Zen Xtra, but now I seem to have a device which is not functioning at all. Many thanks.

I've received a reply from Creative [see below] which is, frankly, a bit insulting, because it suggests that they never even read my original message to them. Needless to say, I haven't been able to solve the problem. I've written back to them and told them that I'd appreciate further assistance. To top it all off,?I can't even format the Zen Xtra so that I can simply use it as an external hard dri've. Does ANYONE have any advice on this matter? • Zen Xtra fails PlaysForSure Firmware update - Now it won't install a firmw

Zen Xtra 40 - Was upgrading from .30 firmware to 2.0.03 to support WMP and VistaFirmware Upgrade to Failed to Complete
Downloaded and ran PlaysForSure Firmware 2.0.03
It identified my Zen Xtra and started the upgrade, Zen Xtra rebooted and just sat there. 2 hours later I disconnected Zen Xtra and its in Recovery Menu. Reboot says Firmware Problem and goes to the recovery menu again.
If I plug it back into my system it says it found a 20mb 'Portable Device' MTP and lets me open the device but nothing is on the 20mb partition.
If I run PlaysForSure Firmware 2.0.03 again it says I must plug in the device, even though its definitely plugged in and recognized as an MTP device.
Seems like the PlaysForSure Firmware 2.0.03 isn't designed to identify the device after a partial upgrade? Tried older .30 Firmware install program, it can't identify the device either. Device shows up in Device Manager as Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra using a Microsoft Driver.
I've installed the latest JB3MV2_PCWDRV_US_2_0_00.exe drivers and it does not help. Device still detects as a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra. If I uninstall Windows Media Player it won't install any drivers and won't accept the PCW Driver either.
Where can I get a firmware updater that will function when my Zen Xtra wants to be an MTP device?I tried another computer with WM9, just PCWDRV 2.0 drivers, and it will not detect and install the drivers when I plug the device in. Says it can't find suiteable drivers for this device.
Tried Cleanup, Reload OS, Reboot.
Boot v.4 and HW v0.0. Any ideas?

Wow after searching hundreds of documents on this forum I got my firmware updated
!!! I took my notebook, which I had recently upgraded from WMP9 to WMP after I could not get it to recognize and upgrade my Zen. I uninstalled WMPI uninstalled WMP RuntimeRebootedI went to Microsoft and get WMP0 specificallyInstalled it and closed itI ran the ZenXtraPS4Audible_PCFW_LB_2_0_03.exeOn the Zen I selected Reload OS, I click to have it reload OS, while it was doing that I plugged it into the notebook. The Firmware Tool Detected the Device again!!Current version 2.0.03Upgrade will be 2.0.03I click Upgrade!?It upgraded this time!!?The bummer is ALL MY MUSIC is wiped off my device. I didn't format it, but I guess the upgrade does it for you. Which means I just lost hundreds of dollars worth of songs since WMP doesn't have a license transfer and all my music was on the ZEN. So even though I have the files on my computer, they won't play because I don't have the license any longer.

• Zen Xtra 60GB, Nomad Exlporer iss

Some problems i'm having with Nomad explorer are: . Im trying to take ALL the data out of the data library and its telling me "There is not enough diskspace on either the destination or the temporily folder at C:docume~\user\locals~\temp\CTBNS\copy Please Free up more disk spaec and try again" Okay, i have 500gb's on my hard dri've and I did not fill up the zen, i'm only trying to move gb's off the darn thing 2. I'm deleting things out of the Zen, to infact free more space as its asking me to do, and its taking foreverm and in most cases, it will show that its gone, but when i plug it back in.... its there again 3. It's moving really slow, i have USB 2.0 ports and i have a super high end computer with a quad core processor 2gb's of ram I've never had these problems before, can anyone tell me whats going on with this thing The version of firmware is .20.08, i did all the upgrading it suggested. I just want my files off of this thing. Anybody else ever have this problem

Hi,
Are you trying to move about GB worth of data from your Zen Xtra to your computer?
What's the file size of the largest file you are trying to move?

Guess I will try what you guys and gals said to do and if no luck then would someone please let me know when there is a class action:smileyvery-happy:? • Creative Zen Xtra USB Driv

I need USB drivers for this player. Can somebody help me?

He is probably having the same problem I am.
All the drivers for the are installed before the player is connected. The Zen Xtra is connected afterwards.
The player connects with Windows XP, is recognized as the Creative Zen Xtra, but when after telling the system to install the drivers, it wants to connect with Windows Update to continue. After the attempt, it says that the drivers for the device were not found.
Looking in the Device Manager reveals that the Zen Xtra has a Code error - The Device is not Configured Properly. All the driver details are Not Available/Unknown.
I have attempted to install this player on 2 different systems with the same result. The Zen Xtra plays and otherwise functions normally. My Firmware Version is 2.0.03. One computer is an AMD64 with Windows XP SP2, the other is an AMD Sempron with Windows XP SPa.
I hope this hel

• Data File Cache Significance

Hi Everyone,I have been away from Essbase for a little while and in the mean time our client made the move to Essbase v6.Could somebody please explain the significance, and correct way to set, the Data File Cache? Also, have the rules for setting the Data Cache changed as a result?Any advice would be appreciated - I understood Essbase v5 quite well but have been out of the loop as far as Essbase v6 goes.

The data file cache has significance only if your client is using Direct I/O. Direct I/O was introduced beginning with v6 to allow DBAs to explicitly manage data file caching on a database by database basis rather than allowing the operating system to do it. The previous I/O management scheme (Buffered I/O) was still supported, but Direct I/O was the default.Unfortunately, in installations with multiple applications per server, optimizing the data file cache for each database proved to be a headache. So Hyperion decided to revert to Buffered I/O as the default beginning with v6.2. So in Essbase version 6.0-6.1 Direct I/O is the default and you have to change it in essbase.cfg to use Buffered I/O. In version 6.2 and later the reverse is true (please correct me if I'm wrong everyone). If you choose to use Direct I/O, I believe the conventional wisdom is to make the data file cache big enough to hold all the .pag files in your database. Otherwise, set it as large as possible.Good luck,Bruce---Message Posted by sparky1 ??4/7/02 19:44---Hi Everyone,I have been away from Essbase for a little while and in the mean time our client made the move to Essbase v6.Could somebody please explain the significance, and correct way to set, the Data File Cache? • What is the difference  between  data file  & control file

what is the difference  between  data file  & control file

Dear Deba s
Control file
Every Oracle Database has a control file, which is a small binary file that records the physical structure of the database. The control file includes:
The database name
Names and locations of associated datafiles and redo log files
The timestamp of the database creation
The current log sequence number
Checkpoint information

Data File
You manage Data File in your Oracle database as part of Space Management. You can extend, create, drop, and alter tablespaces.
You especially need to avoid tablespace overflow, which is when a tablespace runs out of freespace in the allocated file or files. This happens when an object requires a new extent but there is either no freespace or insufficient freespace in the tablespace
