What programs can i download for my macbook pro that will check for and remove duplicate files,photos etc? Which are the easiest to use?

You want a program that will compare the actual files themselves, not just by their name.

Not those whole folders, but their contents, maybe.
If the user account now on the Mac has read rights to the user account(s) on the backups, yes. If not, you may have to do some finagling.
Try the Browse Other Backup Disks option, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17. If you find an account that can open those folders, restore what you want to an alternate location (#16 in the FAQ).
If not try creating one or more accounts temporarily.

No, you don't need to, but it is highly recommended. Upgrades can fail, the computer may fail, the may be a power outage, etc. Never be without a current backup. Never upgrade until after you make a backup.
I recommend making a bootable backup by cloning:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

What is the best way to find and manage all my duplicate files? I have a Mac Mini late 2010, Mac OSX 10.6.8.

Help with Library Management - duplicate files, single develop settings.

I use Lightroom 5 and local disk as my supposed master.
I use GoodSync and an external drive as my backup.
When I am traveling I use my Macbook and the external drive - and this has caused the following problem;
Instead of just being a backup, my external drive is now a folder in Lightroom.
The develop settings are associated with the files on that drive and I have duplicates through the synchronisation process that I run with Goodsync.
Can I move the develop settings (All, Automagically) back to the files located on my local drive and remove the folder from Lightroom?
I will manage my backup process differently.
Or .. do I create a new catalog and import the files from ... the external drive first? Or the local?
Possibly external to ensure I don't lose any settings?
Any advice, especially if someone else has found themselves in this predicament, would be greatly appreciated!

When using a Finder specifier you also need to include the startup disk. There are a few different domains that the path to command will work with. If you don't specify a domain, such as your first example, the assumption is that you want the user domain. The /Library/Preferences folder is in the local domain so you can use the following command to get its path:

The way that you can transfer apps can vary depending upon the apps themselves. Many apps use iOS file sharing with iTunes. Read about file sharing here.

There are apps that will move files back and forth using USB and WiFi.

The only way I would recommend is to put the photos on an external HD, and also put the catalog file on the same external HD, and move that external HD back and forth between computers, and both of you work on the exact same catalog file.

Lightroom really wasn't meant as a multi-user tool, and the only other way I know to do this is kind of tedious and involves repeated manual operations.
If the photos are on a server, and you each have your own catalogs, then there's no problem with each user working on the photos independently on their own computer in their own Lightroom catalog. The problem comes in if you want to consolidate the changes made by the different users into one master catalog somehow. Then, for each change made, you need to combine the changes into the other catalog, and this can be done via File->Export as Catalog and then File->Import from Another Catalog. And then tomorrow when there are more changes, you have to do it again. And don't wind up in the situation where you accidentally forget to update a photo(s) like this, because then you have two catalogs that don't match.
Better you should look at software like Daminion which is designed to be multi-user. (Note: I have not used Daminion, and so I am not recommending or endorsing it, I am simply stating that it allows multi-user catalogs)

I just started migrating from my old iMac to my new one, both intel based. I am using my wireless system for this. I don't have many files, photos, etc, yet it says it's going to take 11 hours. Is this normal?

I'd like to stay below 5Gb on my iCloud account. How can I delete data from ICloud once it's there? For instance, once I've transferred files from my iMac to iPad (or downloaded and deleted Mail from both) do these data accumulate on my iCloud account, or can I selectively delete some. Hello and thanks in advance for any advice anyone has concerning this issue. I bought an iPad and I hate it! I can't transfer files, photos etc to my iPad. I would like to use Bluetooth since it's so fast. I don't want to sync the entire contents of iTunes to my iPad. If I did that I would lose all the pics I took with my iPad. I just want to be able to send files back and forth between the 2 devices. I don't want to be on the Cloud either. There's no reason for Apple to have a copy of my pics on their Cloud. My Samsung 3 Android phone works better than this iPad for file transfers. Help... please!!!

If you mean the same photos appear in all these places, then that's what is supposed to happen. If you mean you have more than one of each photo in each album, then you' em possibly added them manually and had them add automatically. You'll need to remove them manually.

A PowerPC Mac, if that's what it is, won't be able to see an Intel Mac's formatted data. Also ExFat formatting is not supported by 10.6.3 or earlier. I would try viewing the backup on another Intel Mac with at least 10.6.4. If it isn't there, then the backup never really took place. I much profer a hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner.

Yes, the duplicates appear in the iPhoto window. I have folders with same name occuring two or even three times sometimes with exactly the same set of photos (ie photos with the same ID) and sometimes with a limited set of photos. Other folders appear only once.
I normally take my MacBook with me if I'm shooting a lot of photos, such as on holiday, and then want to transfer them to my iMac when i get home. Other times I transfer the camera's memory stick directly to my iMac.
I have great difficulty transferring the photos from my MacBook to my iMac. I don't want to store my photos on my iDisk due to the length of time it takes to upload them.
