Managing files on an iPhone

Hello. New to iPhone, veteran of Windows.
In studying the phone and manual, i cannot find a way to upload files to the iPhone and then manage those in some sort of folder heirarchy. For instance, PDF files, or text files, or spreadsheets.
Is there a 3rd party app to do this? Any solutions?
Thank you for your advise.
-Marc

So far there are four real options, as far as I know, that are worth checking out. They all sync over wi-fi or, in the case of one of these apps, through a web-based service. To use these you must know how to manage a basic wireless network or follow fairly simple directions.
The first option I would recommend trying would be Air Sharing because it's free until the 22ndish of September. I have downloaded it but have not tried it so I can't be much help there, but it's free for a limited time.
The second is what I use, and chose based on reviews and the fact that it was out before Air Sharing, is Files ($7). It's easy to use and I've had no problems so far. For all of these solutions, make sure you have installed all your updates to your OS, as problems have been known to occur in systems that are not up to date.
The third is DataCase ($7). I know it is similar in functionality to Files, but I have heard in the reviews that there is very little support or set-up info available (Files comes with a Read Me document built in). Now, remember, these are reviews and some people really like DataCase and hate Files, thus is the nature of subjectivism.
And the fourth is ReaddleDocs ($15). This service is unique as it creates a "cloud" for you to upload documents from your home computer and lets you download them, from the cloud, to your phone. I hear good things about Readdle and I have their Shakespeare program and am immensely satisfied. But, because of the price, I would recommend trying the others first.
A couple other random notes:
There are file size limitations to each program so I would look before you leap.
No apps allow for editing yet (so far) and you can view your docs on any of these programs.
Hope this helps.

How can I solve these stupid restrictions?

    Where are iTunes files located?
No, I do not mean just the music.  Copying just the media/music files or the media folder creates problems.

    Not possible.
Either unselect it during what it syncs, or manually manage > delete song.

  • How to import old iPhone SMS.CSV file into new iPhone?

    Hey everyone,
So I've spent a couple days on this as I just upgraded to the iPhone5S from my 4S.  Long story short, my backup restore didn't work after multiple tries (gave me the file is corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone error).
    I tried:
    -reinstalling itunes
    -updating itunes
-combining the 5S backup with the old 4S backup
    -tinyumbrella
and a few of other things as I've forgot now.
The most important things I needed was the contact list and SMS history.  I've got the contact list from extracting is successfully from the iTunes backup folder and using iCloud, but cannot figure out how to import the SMS.CSV file into my iPhone5S.
Any suggestions on how I can get my SMS messages from my iPhone4s into my 5S?
If anyone has any other suggestions on getting my Backup Restore to work that would be awesome too!
    Thanks!

A word on SMS text messages. It is pracitcally impossible to import an SMS text-messages file to a new iPhone and have the Messages app on the new device read the messages.
You can transfer, however contacts and other individual data (such as calendars and notes) from one iphone to the next. I had my old Nokia which whose contacts I exported to a CSV file. I then imported the file to my iphone which converted the file into multiple contacts in the Contacts app on the iphone. You can use a contact management app such as this one in order to import the contact file to the new iPhone.

  • How to manage files in ipad

How can we manage files in ipad?

If you are used to a Windows computer and now have an iPad, you might be thinking the same thing.  iOS doesn't want you to worry about files on your iPad, so everything is run through the apps themselves.
If you need a bit more control of your files, you might like FileManger Pro, it's 4.99, but it will manage them through Dropbox, iCloud, etc.  Everything is now run throught the cloud usually, which means you might have to pay for Cloud Storage with a Apple device.  Hence cloud storage is popular these days, and also dangerous if you know a little about hacking.
Here are your file management options through another app you download with the App Store,
Best File Management with iPad, iPhone:  http://bit.ly/X2KPHb
Now if you do have a Windows, or a Mac Computer, plug it into your USB on your computer and install iTunes Software.  It will lManage your files through the iTunes Software.  First on iTunes go to your iPad button on the top right, then click on your Menu where it Says Apps, and manually control the Files from there.
Dropbox is a helpful for a lot of this and the File Manger Pro will integrate the file management there, so it's worth the 4.99 for that option too, it also integrates with the iCloud and other Cloud option you may have.
Here is my Blog, I hope to write more posts like this in the future.

  • Best File Manager / File Browser / Finder / Explorer ?

What is the absolute best file manager / file browser / finder / explorer ?

There won't be one for the iphone system, or I guess other apps files.
But there are a few that can open photos, documents, videos from the album and email.
iOS is quite closed as far as searching around inside the file system.
This I believe is to protect the system and make it more "fool proof" (and reading many posts on this forum you get an idea why it is good to be this way).
There are iphone browsers for on computers that browse the iphone when connected.
But you would have to jail break your iphone to really open it up to looking in the system; and should not be attempted unless you really know what you are doing.
Or are you looking for an app to browser a computer over wifi?

  • Most "native" way of managing files

Hi again! I continue learning to use my iPhone. Now I'm into managing my files in a convenient way. I know the "natural" way for managing files on iOS is app-centered (so each document type is "saved" in the arena belonging to each app).
However, let's imagine you're preparing a presentation about a city you're visiting. Let's say you're visiting Venezia, and you're collecting material for your presentation. Such material is photos, notes, audio clips, and even some pdfs. If you were using a computer, you'll create a "Venezia" folder, and manage all your presentation stuff into such folder. However, on the iPhone... what would be the iOS-way of doing this? I suppose you don't have to go to the photo app for the photos, the note app for the notes, iBooks for the pdfs, and so on, do you?
I suppose there're third party apps for doing this, but I don't want to work in a way opposite to the iOS design.
What would be a good way, fully integrated in the iOS design, of managing files of different types that belong to the same subject?
    Thanks!

Apple has always believed they know what's best for you, whether you like it or not.
When they developed iOS, they decided that users did not need access to the underlying file system, and decreed that this would be so until the end of time.  This made some sense for iPods and iPhones, which were not meant for general purpose computing, but you've shown that even with those you run into trouble.
This philisophy became totally ludicrous when they came out with the iPad, which is capable of "real work".  This is evidenced by the profusion of ad hoc work arounds.  The most natural of these link various cloud services, and DropBox has become the lingua franca.
For example, I don't have an Airprint printer, so I have to use a third party printer program.  To get around the fact that it's not integrated into the operating system, it's got its own email and web support, but the natural way to use it with other programs is to connect them all DropBox, GoogleDrive, etc, and just pretend *that's* the native file system.
Apple would of course just advise me to throw out my perfectly good printer and buy one with Airprint

  • Can't copy music files over to iPhone 4s

I upgraded to iTunes 11 and I manually manage my files.  Usually I just click and drag files to my iPhone and they copy onto the device, but now when I do that, they don't copy over.
When I look at my phone in iTunes, the files are there, but they are greyed out and don't appear on the device after I disconnect:
Even after I click "Sync" they still don't copy, but I shouldn't have to do that since I am manyally managing.
    Help......

same problem here..any solution out there?  I dont want to reload my ipod

  • Cannot play Protected AAC files on my iPhone 5

I purchased a new iPhone 5 and have synced my music to it. However any purchased AAC files that are in iTunes will not play on my iPhone. They show up and when I try to play it will just skip to the next song it can play that is not the protected AAC file format. Purchased AAC files play fine. It is the Protected AAC which you find in the "kind" column. The new iPhone 5 is obviously running iOS 6.
I have an iPad 2 that is also running iOS 6 and it plays those Protected AAC files just fine.
Does this have something to do with the iPhone is not authorized? I had an iPhone 4 (not 4S) that I upgraded from. I sold the iPhone 4 so when I did I went into my account in iTunes and managed devices and removed the iPhone 4. I set up the iPhone 5 and put in my Apple ID, shouldn't it automatically authorize the phone to play these purchased songs? One interesting thing is if I look at my managed devices now in iTunes it says an iPhone 4S is associated with my apple ID. I've never had a 4S and the date it says the 4S was associated is the date I got my iPhone 5.
How can I play these files on my iPhone 5?

I'm having the exact problem with a track purchase on iTunes.  Works fine on my 3rd gen iPad, but recently was dropped from my iPod touch (pre and post IOS 6).

  • Voice Memo .mov files lost in iphone Limbo

    Hello.
After doing some research it appears that:
There is a bug with iphone (mine is 3g) that when voice memos are recorded they are recorded as .mov files, and then converted to .m4a.
I assume this is because .m4a is a more complex algorithm and the little iphone processor can only record .mov on the fly.
The issue is that if the iphone is interrupted in this process, you will have a voice memo that goes for 0 seconds and a .mov file on your iphone taking up space.
I noticed in iTunes that i had 3.9 GB of "Other" taking up space on my iphone. After using third party software, i looked into the files on the iphone and found that most of this space was being taken up by files in my "recordings" folder. I went into 'voice memos' on my iphone and individually** deleted all the voice memos (after backing them up) and freed up a significant amount of the 3.9 GB. However, there are still 1.2 GB of .mov files still taking up space on the iphone, and I cannot find a program that will let me delete the files (write to the iphone hard disk) and the iphone itself cannot recognise the files!
It seems the only way to delete the files is to Jailbreak. I don't want to jailbreak the phone, simply because i believe that when you pay for apple products, you are paying for a product that 'just works'. In other words, they have done all the trouble shooting and tweaking of things to make it all work seamlessly. Jailbreaking reopens the can of worms of software clashes, and you get back into the land of using a windows style system.
Does anyone have a way around this?
    I have iPhone 3g and Macbook 2.4ghz Core2Duo.

They won't sync back to your phone as far as I know. You can sync them from your phone to computer to listen to them in itunes. If you delete a voice memo on iPhone, it isn’t deleted from the Voice Memos playlist in iTunes. However, if you delete a voice memo from iTunes, it is deleted from iPhone the next time you sync with iTunes.
    You might try this:
In iTunes, select the voice memo you want on your phone, go to “Advanced” and select “Create MP3 Version”. See if you can sync that back to your phone.

  • How can i print my files from mi iphone 5 throught the airport express?

How can i print my files from mi iphone 5 throught the airport express?? i have the last iOS version installed and also the last firmware version of the printer. the printer is already connected to the USB airport express and when i look for printers in airprinter there is no printer found. i have an HP LASERJET P1606dn(i think that is supported by the airprinter).

In order to function with AirPrint, a printer must connect to the network wirelessly.
Even if you have an AirPrint compatible printer, iOS devices will not be able to print to the printer when it is connected via USB.
    So, you have two options:
    1) Reconfigure the printer to connect to the network using wireless only and the iOS devices should be able to print that way....assuming that you have up to date drivers for the printer installed.
    2) Leave the printer connected via USB and then use a third party App like Printopia installed on your Mac as a "workaround" to (hopefully) allow the iOS to device to be able to print.  If you want to give this a try, there is a free trial for Printopia, so you will know if it will work before you buy. You must have a Mac running on the network in order for Printopia to function correctly.

You would each need to use your own user account on the Mac, you can do this at system preferences > users & groups.

The title of my initial post is a bit misleading. I already took a chance deleting one of the iPhones, hoping if I deleted the wrong one, I can still reauthorize it (all with the same Apple ID acct, so not subject to 90-day waiting period, right?) The iTunes database just updated itself, and it says I have 4 "devices" "in the Cloud", but 5 "computers" associated w my account. How can I find out what computers are associated? Isn't there a list I can see? I dont have a clue what computers they might be. If I use the  "Deauthorize All" option, is it a pain to add them all back in. I assume I would have to log in from each computer to reauthorize each one. Would I have to be running the newest OS or version of iTunes to reauthorize? I think I have a PowerBook G4 Titanium with an older OS and iTunes. I'd like to keep that authorized, if possible.
