Managing imported photos and originals

I have several thousand photos that I'd like to import into iPhoto 09. However, I'm concerned about the originals. I'd like to keep them and just have copies imported into iPhoto. Is that the default?
Then, as time goes on, I'd still like to add new original to my non-iPhoto folder on my desktop (where they are now), and have copies added to iPhoto. That way, I’ll always have the originals as a backup. Plus, I sync these originals to an online source (using SugarSync) as a backup in case something happens to my computer.
Bottom line, I like many of the iPhoto features and would like to start using them, but backup of the originals photos is my primary concern.
Is there a web page somewhere that goes over the theory of managing photos? Or general comments of how to do this would be appreciated.

However, I'm concerned about the originals. I'd like to keep them and just have copies imported into iPhoto. Is that the default?
Yes. By default the will be copied to the Library on import.
But why do you need to keep the originals - and that way use twice as much disk space?
Also, copies of files stored on the same disk are not a back up. They’re just copies. They won't protect you in the case of disk damage, for instance...
When you import an original to iPhoto it makes a +byte by byte+ of the file. It's identical in every way. These are simply stored in the Finder - just like your files are right now.
Are you concerned about the Package File format of the Library? With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to look inside? Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
If you're worried about back-up - and you're absolutely correct to be - then simply back up the Library, and protect everything.
If you really want to go the way you describe: then simply use the Finder or Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) to move the files from your Camera to wherever you want to store them, and then import them to iPhoto.

  • Can I rebuild iPhoto library by importing masters and originals?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and iPhoto 11 and subsequently lost most of the photos in my library, going through the same disastrous experience as many others posting here. All of the recommended methods of rebuilding the library have failed. At this point I'd simply like to rebuild my library by importing masters and originals from the Time Machine backup. I don't care about losing edits to photos; I basically want to start from scratch. Two questions: First, will this work? Second, will the photos still have their metadata (date, geolocation if available) when I import them?

I have to admit that I haven't yet tried iPhoto Library Manager. I'm fairly certain the files are gone from my hard drive; my disk usage shows that 90GB has been freed up since my photos and videos were lost. Also, after multiple attempts to remedy the situation through iPhoto itself, I'd rather just take control myself.
Oh, that raises another question: Will videos also be imported successfully via the method I asked about?

  • Import photos and video into different folders

Hi, is there any way to import photos and videos into seperate folders?
I use lightroom to manage my photos and videos, but the videos are much larger so I prefer they are stored in a different location.
I can import them together and drag the photos to a new folder, but this does not create the same folder heirarchy as importing them would.
Currently I import once for photos and onece for videos, but I'd prefer to just "import"
    Thanks!

  • Importing photos and videos from a previous version | Learn Photoshop Elements 11 | Adobe TV

Importing photos and videos from a previous version of Photoshop Elements or Premiere Elements.
    http://adobe.ly/QAckAp

The title implies "importing photos & videos from previous versions" and only deals with "Organizer".  It does not mention if regular "JPG" or other formats need to change.   It does not discuss if images have been moved from one location to another folder or directory.  It does not discuss any issues of previous versions or backward compatability of formats.

I Nearly bought from Amazon too but I found a thread from Adobe stating that the only recognized outlet for lightoom is themselves and other outlets serial numbers will not be guaranteed.
THat at was sufficient for me to buy direct from Adobe, hope you get it sorted.

  • IPhoto takes long time to import Photos and Videos

From a software standpoint why iPhoto sometimes takes so long to import Pictures and Videos?
    Example Scenario:
on the iPhone 5 - iOS 7 there are:
    2851 Photos in Camera Roll
    1000 Photos in Photo Stream
51 Videos (each videos average of 3 minutes long)
    on the MAC - OS X 10.9
iPhoto start to import photo, and more or less, after importing almost 500 photos, just get stop at one particular photo and thats it.
    What are the reason?
    Thank you

    Thank you leonie,
so my question is why a photo became corrupted in the iPhone?
    Step 1
    Take a Photo
    Step 2
The taken photo goes into Cameral Roll
What are the reason that became corrupted?
    Thanks

Cannot load Photoshop Elements 10. 1st (of 3) disks only gives me option to import photos and videos, not to install. How can I install?

    Are you sure that:
    1. You have the correct disc for your operating system? You have both mac and windows versions on the discs. If you have a mac you want disc 3, not disc 1.
    2. PSE is not already installed?

  • Problems importing photos and iTunes

Have been using iMovie for years - current version 11. All of a sudden, I cannot import photos and music from iTunes into my project. It looks like it will (green plus sign and green bar) but then the perpetual beach ball starts and never stops. I have 22 GB hard drive left and should have plenty of RAM. Bad time for a snag - graduation videos coming up. Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance.

You cannot actually sync photos to iTunes, it just accesses the folder you specified and copies the contents to your iPod. When it says it will replace all photos, it means the ones on the iPod, as you can only either sync (and mirror the contents of your photo folder, whatever it may contain) or not sync (and keep the photos on your iPod the way they are)
Also, copying them to the iPod drive will save them there, but to view them on the iPod, you need to go through iTunes.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to import photos and videos from Android device?

    Hello
I just bought Photoshop Elements 11 recently and I'm trying to import photos and videos from my phone, Samsung Galaxy SIII, but having a little trouble.
When I go to "Import from Camera or Card Reader" option and choose my phone from the "Get photos from" drop down menu in "Source" section the "Photo downloader" finds
every single photo and/or video stored on the device and it's memory card but I'm trying to import only photos and/or videos I've shot my self with the phone, witch is kept
in an folder named DCIM, but I simply can't figure out how to so my question is:
How do I import photos and/or videos from my Android device?

Try clicking Advanced button (bottom left) in the downloader dialog. You should then be able to select and deselect thumbnails and import only the ones you give the checkmark.

  • Can't Import: Import Photos and Videos Grayed Out

This is perplexing.   I had this problem in LR3 so I decided to upgrade to LR4 thinking it will be better but same result.  I can't import at all.  Import Photos and Videos Button in the dropdown is grayed out.  Import button is also grayed out!  I can't do anything!
By the way, I'm using Mountain Lion.

Have you tried resetting the Preferences file?

  • I have recently updated to iPhoto 9.2.1, more by accident I guess. In the older version off iPhoto when I imported photos and gave the event his own name, this name was also used in the "masterfile"

I have recently updated to iPhoto 9.2.1, more by accident I guess. In the older version of iPhoto when I imported photos and gave the event his own name (for exampample "110723 birthday son 2011"), this name was also used in the "masterfile", so I could find the file by his name ("110723 birthday son 2011") in the "masterfile" on my HD and copy and paste it from there to other computers.
In the new version the file gets stored under a seemingly random number, which does not give me any information about the content.
Is there a way to fix this? Would it be different in apperture?
    Thanks
    Harald

I have Iphoto '09, version 8.1.2 (424). I am having an identical problem.  All my pictures are imported into Iphoto when I downloaded them from my camera.  Until recently, I thought that the pictures were actually saved in the library.  Since I need to crop my pictures for the web, and Iphoto doesn't do that, I purchased Photoshop Elements to do that.  To my surprise, when I try to get a picture from Iphoto to Photoshop, it can't be done. That was when I realized, after wasting a lot of time, that the photos are not in the Iphoto library.
I started naming the pictures on Iphoto so I had a recognizable file name to open on Photoshop. Couldn't find it.  I looked in the Backup folder and the Transfer software folder (I have a Nikon camera), and the names I entered in the Iphoto display, could not be found.
When I am trying to upload a photo to the web, I get the Finder folder showing  with an active folder called "Photos" under "Media", which only displays Iphoto and PhotoBooth.  This is a folder name that I cannot find in my HD anywhere when I look for it.  If I edit a picture with Photoshop, I am not going to save it back to Iphoto (not sure whether it will work properly).  How do I get my folder of edited photos to show when I want to upload a picture to the web?
Where (the name of the folder) do I find the pictures I see displayed on the Iphoto library, including any name changes, keywords added, and so on?

It looks like the card may be the problem, and your best bet is to try the Card Reader - this will make the card accessible by the Finder and you may be able to drag the pics off to the desktop or, at worst, try recover the pics with an app like MediaRecover

When I try to import photos and videos, I'm told that there are none. And when I go into the DCIM folder (the only folder I can see), there are no files inside. What else can I do to move my photos onto my PC?

Are the photos in question in the Camera Roll of the iPad? If not, where on the iPad are they (in what part of what app do they appear)?
