Managing iPad files with Dropbox

Hi there,
I'm very new to setting up an iPad and am wanting to do the following:
Be able to have a PDF template (ie. a costing sheet) that I can fill in the specific details for the client and then save a copy to a specific Dropbox location (often needing to create a new folder at this time) as well as renaming the file from the generic name to something more specific (ie. Smith Costings). I've created a PDF form which would work, but I'm wanting to save a copy to Dropbox and then reset the form to be able to do it again for the next quote.
Is this possible? I currently have the PDF Max app on there which will let me save to a specific Dropbox location, but it won't let me create a new folder or rename the file which is a really vital part of the process.
I'm also wanting to do a similar thing within an annotation program. I have the Bamboo Paper app by Wacom so that I can mark on specific requirements for the job and then I want to save it to a specific Dropbox location (once again, this may involve creating a new folder) and renaming the file.
Thanks - any help would be greatly appreciated.

I keep a backup of my music library on a portable harddrive, using microsoft's "Synctoy:"
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E0FC1154-C975-4814-9649 -CCE41AF06EB7&displaylang=en
Works perfectly for syncronizing a folder on the main harddrive with the portable drive, only copying whatever has changed or added since the last sync.

  • How to manage linked files with multiple designers?

    Hi,
    I work at a small company with multiple designers (5 of us) where 3 of us work remotely. We use dropbox to manage our files so that everyone has access--we keep client files in specific folders and stock media in a shared folder.
    Currently whenever we open a file that's been edited by someone else, we have to go in and individually relink the files. Some would prefer to embed the files, however this can increase filesize by 60-400mb. Our current files total in at around 500gb, so I don't think that's a viable option.
    4 of us are on Macs, 1 on Windows. 1 has CS5, 3 have CS6 and one has CC.
    My question is this:
    If we all have the same path to dropbox (or the same path to the file, either way) will Illustrator be able to automatically find the files?
    Eg. X:/Dropbox/...
    If so, will it work cross platform?
    I know InDesign has a better link management system, is there a good plugin that would help with this?
    I'm going to continue to do my own research and testing, but I thought I'd consult those more knowledgeable than me.
    Thank you!

    Thanks for your response. Currently, dropbox works so that it syncs online but also is stored locally on your hard drive (not like a network drive). So one person could have a different path to the dropbox folder than the other. As for the second part, that would be about the same as embedding it in the file as far as general disk space usage. We use many of the same stock photos in multiple files, so keeping them in the same location reduces the amount of space used. It wouldn't be a huge problem if illustrator used relative paths instead of absolute paths, but alas.
    I was forgetting that Mac OS doesn't use drive letters, so there probably won't be a way for illustrator to read things as the same path cross-platform...
    I'm still wondering if there are any good plug-ins which help find broken links.
    I found this: http://techblog.willshouse.com/2011/01/16/adobe-illustrator-linked-files-fix/ which might be helpful, but I'm wondering if there's a better solution.

  • How do you open Garageband for iPad files with Garageband?

    I was led to believe that Garageband could open up Garageband For iPad files, but not vice versa.
    However when a friend sent me his Garageband For iPad file, and I tried to open it, a "compatibility updater" started running then stopped halfway through and told me Garageband was "unable to complete the download" and directed me to go to Apple help.
    Here I am.
    Anybody got any idea how to open (and work on) this file?
    Tank you in advance.
    -Dave-id

    Apparently there were a two updaters I had to run first, before letting the compatability updater do it's thing.
    And since I got my Garageband for Mac through the APP store I could only do my updating through that.
    So if anyone else is having that same problem, update, update, update!

  • How do I properly manage audio files with iTunes?

    Hello Dear Readers,
    I am going to start using iTunes exclusively for my music collection management. Previously, I had only used iTunes for managing content for my iPhone 4. Now, I am wanting to import all of my media (music) files into iTunes for general use and playback.
    For example, I have over 3,000 music files, and I would like to know the best way to get them into iTunes. From a lynda.com training video about using iTunes, I learned that there is a folder called "Automatically Add to iTunes", which is monitored by iTunes for new files to import into the iTunes library. However, I would like to know if this is the *best* way to do this. For example, can I just*move* my 3,000 music files into this 'Automatically Add' folder and then let iTunes do its thing?
    Will iTunes *move*the files that it is able to manage OUT of this folder and into one of its managed folders, such that there would be no duplicate file left behind? Is it correct in saying that the files that are left in this folder that were not able to be handled by iTunes and must be handled differently before they can be imported into iTunes. Or is there just an all around different, and better, way to get these music files into iTunes? Thanks for your advice and opinions!
    There is also the issue of what to do with the commercial CDs I have (less than 50).  I would like to discard these and just maintain them on digital form, e.g., my 2 TB hard drive.  However, I am getting varying opinions as to how to do this.  I need 2 things:  1) to archive the CDs for retrieval later in case I need the songs that are on them, and 2) MP3 versions of the audio CD files for use on my flash drive which plays on my car audio system.  These would also be the files that I manage in iTunes.
    Some people have suggested using Exact Audio Copy to make a FLAC and a LAME MP3 copy of myCDs.  Others have suggested keeping an ISO copy of the compact discs for reference archive. Personally, I am wondering if I should just import my commercial CDs directly into iTunes, and then pay Apple $25 annually to maintain copies of these, as announced by Steve Jobs at the WWDC that this cloud functionality was forthcoming.
    I am in need of some informed, educated opinions and suggestions as to how I should proceed.
    Then, there is also the naming convention of the files.  When the files get ripped from CD, I can add the freedb information to them for the ID3 tagging.  However, I need to know how to specify in what system that the file names are comprised. This is what I am thinking of as my folder and file name format, at this point.
    For the naming scheme of the audio files, I am proposing the following:
    For most music by 1 artist on a disc, I would do as follows:
    Folder Name: AlbumArtist - Album Title (year)
    File Names:  Track number (from 1 on up, with NO leading zeros) Track Title
    For compilations with various artists, I would use the following for the schema:
    Folder Name: VariousArtists (album artist) - Album Title (year)
    File Names:  Track number (1 on up) Track Title - Track Artist.
    Do these seem like reasonable naming schemes that would be good for using on all audio software and equipment, such as my iPhone, my car audio flash drive player, and in iTunes?
    I know that this is a lot to ask, but I am just trying to learn how to do things correctly and most efficiently so that I don't have problems down the road with my iTunes library.  I welcome input, discussion and of course, dissent!  Thanks!

  • How can I manage existing files with folders?

    I turned on Creative Cloud syncing in Adobe Ideas, which I've been using for quite a while, and now I have a bunch of files in the root of the view that I want to organise into folders. I created a folder in the web interface but there's no way to drag'n'drop files into the folder. This is also impossible in the iPad app. Is this a forthcoming feature or is there already some way to do it?

    Did you figure out how to move your files? Here's a little video tutorial about moving and organizing files in Creative Cloud: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/learn-creative-cloud/selecting-moving-and-deleting-files-in-crea tive-cloud/

    I currently have a free app that syncs with dropbox but has no formatting features, which I am finding frustrating.

    You can't sync files with Dropbox in an automated way. But you can use the Share button to send edited files to the Dropbox app on iPad/iPhone which accomplishes the same thing. (Other PDF reader apps offer more automated solutions.)

  • Sync with Dropbox

    Hello there,
    Is it possible to synchronise the files with our dropbox library ?
    I'd like to mark comments on my pdf files and save them directly on dropbox.

  • How to recognize midi files with iTunes 10.6 ?

    iTunes 9.0 recognizes midi files and can it be easily converted into mp3 files.
    For the interfacing with iPad2 I must use iTunes 10.6 and it seems this version is not recognizing midi files.
    How should I do to manage midi files with iTunes 10.6 ?
    Is there in App Store any application with this feature ?
    Really it's a pity that a new iTunes version loses fatures instead of gaining !!

    The MIDI files in my library still work perfectly. It may be that you simply need to install QuickTime which is no longer installed as part of iTunes.

  • Can I open an encrypted pdf file from Dropbox with my iPhone, iPad, or iPad Mini?

    Mac OS 10.9.3 encrypts a pdf file using Acrobat XI, then sends it to Dropbox.  Mobile device retrieves encrypted file from Dropbox.  Then can mobile device user open (unencrypt) the pdf file?

    George, you wrote something that encouraged me to try to encrypt a PDF document again using the security icon on the menu bar of my old Acrobat 8 Professional. It worked this time (it wouldn't encrypt on my first try, and I wrongly assumed that it wasn't compatible with Maverick OS).  I dropped document into Dropbox, retrieved it with mobile devices; and when I tapped on the document, it simply asked for the password and opened perfectly. When moving to a different screen, then back to the secured PDF file, one must re-enter the password again (which is good).
    As far as what PDF viewer -- I don't know.  I have the Acrobat Reader APP on my devices, is that the reader the document is using??  I've never figured out which APPs are running at any particular time on these devices.
    Many, many thanks for your reply!!

    Consider using sshfs to mount your Pi from your Linux boxes.  It's much easier to configure and manage than samba.  It sounds like you already have your Windows machines mounting your Pi so Samba is doing its job in that respect.
    More info on sshfs in the Wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sshfs
    To help get you off the dime, here's a modified line from my fstab that I use to mount my Pi with:
    gav@PI:/mnt/backup /mnt/rpi/backup fuse.sshfs rw,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,allow_other 0 0
    Subsitute my mount points with yours.
    For a password-less mount:
         ssh-copy-id gav@PI
    after you've set up ssh and generated some keys on your client box.
    Here are some relevant lines from the smb.conf file on my Pi that I use for my one Windows box in the house that might help you with your write permissions:
       security = user
      hosts allow = 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0
      guest account = gav
    ; And my share setup:
    [rpi]
       comment = Public Stuff
       path = /mnt
       writable = yes
    ;   printable = no
    ;   write list = @krb
    [torrent_dl]
       path = /mnt/video/torrent_dl
       writable = yes
       create mask = 0770
       directory mask = 0770
       guest ok = Yes
       case sensitive = No
       read only = No

    Numbers file created w new version of Numbers on my mac and then transferred  via Dropbox to my ipad: file cannot be opened by iOS version of Numbers

    Hi Jocomo,
    That's correct. Dropbox does not handle Numbers 3.0 for Mac and Numbers 2.0 for iOS documents well at all. They will probably fix this.
    But why are you using Dropbox for this?  Numbers has built-in iCloud integration for the very purpose of syncing documents back and forth.  It's much easier than using Dropbox even if Dropbox could handle the new Numbers format.  And it's now quite reliable.
    To enable iCloud with Numbers on your Mac:
    In System Preferences>iCloud make sure you have Documents & Data turned on:
    And after clicking Options, make sure you have checked Numbers.app:
    On your iPad you need to make sure iCloud sync is turned on in TWO places:
      Settings>iCloud>Documents & Data>Numbers
      Settings>Numbers>Use iCloud
    If you have entered the right iCloud credentials on your Mac and iPad, Numbers will then sync back and forth. It's much easier than putting in Dropbox and then having to Open in... , etc.  You can of course still keep backup copies of your documents in Dropbox if you want.

  • IPad Acrobat DC with DropBox

    With the new Acrobat DC, I can not seem to find a way to access any of my .pdf files on DropBox. This will kill my business and that of most mobile Realtors and others that use this basic system. Am I missing something or did this new "update/release" leave me completely stuck without an option? Please help with any ideas that can assist thousands of mobile workers.

    Hi,
    Acrobat DC for iOS supports Adobe Document Cloud (formerly known as Acrobat.com) as the cloud storage.  It has never provided the "integrated" (in-app) support for Dropbox before.
    But you can use the iOS "Open In" feature to open a file from Dropbox and save it to Dropbox.
    Dropbox -> Acrobat DC
    To open a PDF document from Dropbox, please see the Dropbox section of the following FAQ document.
    How to open PDF documents in Adobe Reader (iPad on iOS 7 or 8 version)
    Acrobat DC -> Dropbox
    To save a PDF document (opened in Acrobat DC for iOS) to Dropbox
    Make sure that the PDF document is opened in Viewer (with the light blue icon ion the upper left corner).
    Tap the Share icon in the bottom bar.
    Select "Open In...".
    Select "Open in Dropbox".
    In Save to Dropbox, select a file location.
    Tap Save.
    Please note that Dropbox's PDF previewer does not show annotations (e.g. Sticky Notes, Highlight, Freehand Drawing) or filled forms data in a PDF document.  It does not mean that they are lost.  You just need to view the PDF document in Acrobat DC for iOS.
    Of course, it would require fewer steps if you use Adobe Document Cloud in Acrobat DC for iOS.
    Hope this helps.
