Managing large nmbers of photos

I need some of your expert advice on using iPhoto 08 and Aperture 1.5. Scenario- one iMac 20 with 1 gig, USB 360 gig external hard drive. One user and two very prolific shooters. We currently have over 23K images taking up 73 gig in iPhoto 08. Have a couple of hundred images in Aperture. I really have not spent a lot of time learning this program.
I currently upload all new images to iPhoto from two cameras. No problem with the transfers. I sometimes shoot some Nikon raw images. Less than 10%. Aperture and iPhoto handle them very well.
Would it be more advantageous to up load all the images to a single file and have the two programs reference them? Is this possible in iPhoto I know it can be done in Aperture. Or is it better to upload into Aperture and have iPhoto look in the Aperture library for individual photos for activities that Aperture cannot support?

Radiochief
You've been reading my mail...
We've been using iPhoto since the beginning, and I've started to use Aperture and the other shooter is more comfortable in iPhoto.
I upload everything to iPhoto and reference them in Aperture. Why this way around?
1. The bigger investment is in iPhoto, we ARE using it, we MAY move over to Aperture
2. Aperture is much better at working with referenced files that iPhoto is. Including - if we move entirely to Aperture - turning those reference file to managed ones. You cannot do that with iPhoto.
3. The Aperture library is not easy to reference from anywhere - including iPhoto. Aperture has the ability to import the iPhoto library, including Albums, Rolls, Keywords etc.

  • HT2638 Iphoto freezes when I try and delete a large amount of photos

Iphoto freezes when I try and delete a large amount of photos.  I have tried all of the first aid options.  Can I only delete small batches?  I am trying to organize and edit my 16K + library and deleting small batches is very time consuming.  And iphoto is running very slow...  Is there simply better software for a large library or tips to erase these photos?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • How to manage ALL of my photos

I haven't found a good way to manage ALL of my photos, across multiple computers in my house (3 laptops & an external hard drive with large photo archive). Currently have different iphoto libraries on each machine. Want an easy way to merge all photos into one easily accessible archive. When I try to access the large archive over my wireless network, it usually crashes iphoto, because it takes too long to load.

The only way to merge iPhoto Libraries is with the paid version ($20) of iPhoto Library Manager
I've not heard of a slow network crashing iPhoto, why do you think that's the cause.
Note: A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.

  • Problems syncing large number of photos while choosing all photos option

I have 17,800 photos and have experienced problems with trying to sync in iTunes since release day 1.
If I choose to sync using the all photos option, the iPad will reboot during synch and appears to finish. Ipad will become unresponsive and hang with the apple logo on screen and a hard reset will then be required.
Then when trying to launch photo app in iPad it displays "updating library" for a minute or 2 and then photo app crashes back to home screen.
Have tried many options in trying to solve this including restore iPad software, deleting photo cache in iTunes, rebuilding iTunes library, etc.
Only solution I have found was to break down my 17,800 photos into events and choose to synch events instead of the all photos option and that works, getting all 17,800 photos into iPad. Photos take about 5.8 gb of storage.
There is definitely a problem with iTunes here in synching large number of photos using the all photos option and I have reported this to AppleCare support via two support calls. There does not appear to be a awareness of this issue in tech supports knowledge base and I am surprised to that there are not a large number of incidents reported as there are a few discussions started here on the issues of photo sync.
Hopefully this post will help others with the same issue.

Solved problem of synching iPad with desktop containing large photo library (20,000 photos): In summary, solution was to rename, copy and live iPHoto Library to XHD and reduce size of library on home (desktop) drive.
In the home directory, rename "iPhoto Library" to "iPhoto Global" (or any other name you want), and copy into an external hard drive via simple drag and drop method.
Then, go back to the newly renamed iPhoto Global and rename it again, to iPhoto 2010. Now, open iPhoto by holding down the Alt/Option key and opening iPhoto. This provides option to choose library iPhoto 2010. Open the library, and eliminate every photo before 2010. This got us down to a few thousand photos and a much smaller library. Synch this smaller library with the iPad.
Finally, I suggest downloading a program "iPhoto Library Manager" and using this to organize and access the two libraries you now have (which could be 2, 10 or however many different libraries you want to use.) The iPhoto program doesn't want you to naturally have more than one library, but a download called iPhoto Library Manager allows user to segregate libraries for different purposes (eg. personal, work, 2008, 2009, etc.). Google iPhoto Library Manager, download, and look for links to video tutorials which were very helpful.
I did not experience any problems w/ iPhoto sequencing so can't address that concern.
    Good luck!

I have a large number of photos imported into iPhoto with the dates wrong.  How can I adjust multiple photos (with varying dates) to the same, correct, date?

If I understand you correctly, when you enter a date in the Adjust Date and Time window, the picture does not update with the date you enter.  If that is the case then something is wrong with iPhoto or your perhaps your library.
How large a date change are you putting in?  iPhoto currently has an issue with date changes beyond about 60 years at a time.  If the difference between the current date on the image and the date you are entering is beyond that range that may explain why this is not working.
If that is not the case:
Remove the following to the trash and restart the computer and try again:
    Home > Library > Caches > com.apple.iphoto
Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.iPhoto (There may be more than one. Remove them all.)
---NOTE: to get to the "home > library" hold down option on the keyboard and click on "Go" > "Library" while in the Finder.
    Let me know the results.

You don't need iTunes for that. Simply connect the iPhone to the PC where it will be recognized as a camera. You can then select the photos you wish to transfer, transfer them, and delete them.

  • ADVICE ON IMPORTING LARGE QUANTITY OF PHOTOS FROM CAMERA

I am planning a European trip this summer and anticipate taking a very large number of photos.  I have purchased a 16GB memory card as I was advised this was simpler than attempting to upload to a cloud server or IPAD while travelling.  My question is:  Once I return I will need to load possibly a couple of thousand photos to Elements 11.  I imagine this will take hours and hours in the usual fashion as I will be shooting in RAW.  Is there a way to segment this uploading or does anyone have advice for me as to how I might better accomplish this task?
    Thank you in advance

I would not risk storing all the pictures of a trip to a single 16 GB card... Using your IPAD as backup seems a very good idea.
About the speed of uploading a library of 16 GB, it's not much more than copying 16GB to your computer from a card or a USB stick. You can test it yourself; 'getting' files from the card into the catalog is quick after the 16GB are copied, the only step which will be longer is the creation of the thumbnails, but that does not prevent you from working in the organizer before they are created.

  • How do I export a large no of photos to a flash drive .  Would prefer to have them as a slide show

I have a large number of photos as raw converted to DNG of  a fencing tournament that I have ask to put on  flash drive  for viewing by the participants!  I might even make some money doing it!!!!
I have absolutely no idea of how to do it..
Exporting to discs is no problem though but they do not want discs
    Thank you for your expertise

You would do this in the slideshow module. Get the slideshow designed the way you want it, and then use one of the export buttons in the lower left-hand corner. You can either export the slideshow as a PDF which your customers could view with Adobe Acrobat. Or you could export it as a video.

  • How do I delete large amounts of photos from my ipad?

    a

Are you using iPhoto on your iPad? Then deleting photos will depend on the album they are in and how they have been added to the iPad.
See this document for IOS 6 and earlier:   iPhoto for iOS (iPad): Delete photos from iPhoto
If you also have a Mac, you can delete quickly large amounts of photos from your camera roll by connecting your iPad to your computer using USB and importing the photos into Image Capture, iPhoto, or Aperture. Then set the option to delete the photos after importing.
Photos you synced to your iPad can only be deleted by syncing again.
If you are using IOS 7 you can delete larger amounts of photos from your Camera Roll in the "Moments" view:
n the Photos.app you can select all photos in a "Moment" at once, by pressing "Select" to the right of the "Moment" name. Then press the Trash icon.
    For example:

You should be able to do this via the iPad directly.  Open the Photos application and the forward arrow, then select all of the photos you want to delete and click the red delete button.

I want to delete large numbers of photos from Camera Roll.  Do I have to do it one at a time?

if you do it on the phone, yes - one by one.
if it is really many photos: connect phone to your computer. open digital images. import all your photos to a folder of your choice, tick 'delete after import'. import. now your photos are gone on your phone, and inside the destination folder you selected in digital images. delete this one, too. done.
