Managing multiple sub clips

I have just migrated from Final Cut Studio to Final Cut Pro X.  I am trying to get my head around the workflow of managing clips and sub-clips.  I am working on an interview, so I have a master shot which was recorded to tape and lasts an hour or so and is a single clip.  I am having problems with the following:
a)  I have an audio recording from a portable digital recorder which I need to synchronise to the master clip (it has a poor quality audio track from the camera's microphone).  I have connected the digital audio track and removed the camera audio and it is more or less in synch but I can't see how to easily move the audio track in small increments to improve the synch with the interview video.  (The automatic synch option failed - the digital audio was first followed by the camera video/audio, so the whole clip was over two hours.)
Any suggestions on how to do this with accuracy?
b)  I started making subclips from the master track using keywords but I really want to give a sensible name to each of the subclips and then group them.  I see that I can add additional ranges with Command Shift "i" - but if I forget and press just "i", I lose all the marked up ranges!  I still have the subclips so I can add them one by one, but this seems very clumsy.  Using keywords works okay - but I can't order them unless I name them alphabetically - again, its very clumsy.  It seems to me that the developers assumed the clips would be short and probably only one in and out per clip.  They must never work with a master shot from tape...
Any suggestions on a better way to do this?

Hi Karsten - thanks for the suggestions - I still haven't figured out how to move the audio clip by frame (rather than by dragging with the mouse) but it is more or less in-synch now.
I don't like the keywords option - I want proper name for each subclip and bins to put them in.  Keywords on top of that would be great - but not instead of.  That's how my mind works - a heirarchical structure provides a lot more information than the vagueness of subclips in multiple buckets - how do you know if you have included every subclip in your movie?  How can you be sure you havent used the same clip twice?  Also, if you delete the last keyword, the subclip vaporises!  I have an hour long clip from the tape on the main camera for an interview.  If i make a mistake at ANY TIME by pressing just "i" instead of Command "i" all my subclips vaporise - they still appear in the keyword collection but you cannot favourite them, and therefore you cannot name them individually. They are like phantoms!
I found a solution today after 2 hours with Apple support on the line - You can knife up the long clip, create new compound clips and give them a new name.  Then you can use keywords to organise them - this is your only choice because you can't put clips in a folder.  Its not ideal - if you knife in the wrong place you can't roll back the edit like you could with a subclip in the old Final Cut Pro.
I don't think the Final Cut Pro X development team use the product - there are so many problems related to assumptions they have made about the original material that it is very difficult to figure out how to use this software for a serious project.  If you have lots of short clips then perhaps it makes sense - but if the keyword has to substitute for the name of the clip it becomes very unwieldy...
I recorded an interview - so every sub-clip has to tell me what the interviewee is saying.  And then I want to organise the clips in a hierarchical system (I'm a computer programmer by trade).  I want one copy of each clip in an order which makes sense to me.  No extras!  No multiple copies.  Keywords is MUCH too vague...
Its not a professional's program any more.  Every edit is now destructive - nothing goes to trash in 10.1.1 it just vaporises, and unless you remember to take a copy of your library before you start editing, if you delete something important you have to start again from the beginning.  With a library of nearly 400Gb for this project, taking a copy is a big deal!  I wonder if its the iMovie team who developed this software?  If I hadn't thrown out my old software I would go back to the old version immediately.
This is a fiasco on the scale of the Apple Maps disaster...  I hope they sort this out soon!

  • Best way to organise multiple large clips and hundreds of subclips

    Situation
I have the task of producing a suite of short 2 minute videos comprising highlights of several hours of footage in multiple large files.
I want to extract and manage the highlights in a non-destructive way and organise them according to subject matter.
I would then use these in several projects to create the highlights videos required.
I am using Adobe CC, so it's CS6.
My approach so far is to:
    1. Import all the footage into a single project as individual large clips
    2. Scrub through each clip, set in/outs and extract to subclip, store in subject matter bin
    My questions:
    1.  if I go back to the original footage and edit it, it doesn't seem to flow through to the subclips. How do I make the subclips inherit the attributes of their parent? (e.g. could be sound, colour, etc)
    2. how do I access these highlights bins from another project?
    3. is this the best way to handle my situation?
    Thanks for your input.
    Ric

I suppose applying the effects to the source clip and rendering out a new source file is one way of doing it.  Just be very careful that you don't compress the output.  And, of course, it will double the amount of hard drive space.  I'd still make all the sub-clips first and use the "paste attributes" command.  I think you can even lasso a whole bunch of clips and paste attributes to all of them at once (they have to be in the timeline, though - not the project panel).
It shouldn't take an awful lot of hard drive space to duplicate projects.  Just duplicate the "prproj" file, not the whole projects folder (and certainly not the source material).
Here's a screen shot of my set-up for a complicated, 5-camera shoot of a play:
The original project (syncing all the cameras up) is 1 MB, each successive archive gets a little bigger but the current project is only 3.8 MB.  I would imagine if you are deleting bins and sequences for the mini-projects, the prproj file would actually get smaller than the original master.
Okay.. so here's the mantra about non-tape based video... First you back up the card (including the complete folder structure) onto an archive drive.  Next you copy this folder onto an external or RAID or other "real" archive drive.  Then (and only then) do you start editing the material!
Ideally, you need at least three, physically separate harddrives (not partitions) in an editing station (this is true Windows or Mac).  One drive for the operating system and applications only (no media or projects or anything!).  One for working projects (each project in its own folder) where everything except the source video is stored.  And finally one for the source video.  On my system my OS drive is Tardis ('cuz I'm a geek!).  I have a Projects drive for projects (duh!) a Scratch drive for working video files and an Archive for "finished" projects waiting delivery and back-back-ups of my SD cards.

  • Relink sub clips that have been renamed

I had a problem.  I created a series of sub clips and changed their names.  Then I deleted the source files and had to redownload them (sports event).  I relinked the main files but the sub clips I can't get to display how do I relink those?

Thanks for the reply. That seems like such a huge function that's missing from the architecture. I mean, The reason I wanted to rename the clips on the timeline instead of in the Project window is because where I'm identifying something as being "VFX Shot 01" it might include a clip from the media file "A001C001" which also have a different portion of video in that file which will provide a clip that will be "VFX Shot 33". So I'm unable to apply my naming structure, unless I go through the timeline and 'duplicate' the source clip and re-drop it back onto the timeline. The frustrating thing is that the Project Manager is already aware that it will have to create multiple files originating from the same source file, if that source file provides multiple separate clips on the timeline. So why would it take the naming of those files from the Project window instead of the timeline, where they're better identified? I guess all I can do, now that I have my trimmed project, is go through the clips one by one again and reveal them in the project window and copy/paste the name from the timeline, then use the Project Manager AGAIN to create the new file names. Bit of a pain. Will have to put in a feature request with the guys at Adobe.
Thanks for replying though Ann, much appreciated.

  • Long-form workflow best practice? (sub clips)

I am struggling with the new media management and organizational challenges of FCP X.
Am I the only person in the FCP community who used sub clips?  In all the extensive belly aching about the new FCP, I've yet to see anyone list the death of subclips as a dealbreaker.
This leaves me to believe that even in the pre-FCP X world people used a different (better) workflow than the one I used for over a decade.
Tom Wolsky tells me that I'm trying to force the new software to work like the old...  Maybe, but I think it's reasonable to expect that an "upgrade" means that the new version of a software will have all the functionality of the software it's replacing with new capabilities added....  What we have, however, are lots of new (and admittedly) very desirable new capabilities with (infuriatingly) many of the capabilities most of us thought were crucial to our editing approaches stripped entirely.  Of course there's the promise that "some" of these capabilities will return at some future, unspecified date.
Enough of my mini-rant, here's the question....
If I shoot 22 hours of raw footage and hope to mine 90 minutes for the final cut, which has approximately 45 scenes, how should I use these radical new organization features to be able to easily locate my clips?
In the old way, I'd get my Sony PMW-EX3 clips into FCP (not intuitive--another question, when will FCP accept the native SxS files?), then look at each of those master clips and cut those clips into sub clips.
Each subclip would have a unqiue name.  And I would create a series of folders for the subclips.  Very clean, very organized and when I need a cutaway shot of the dog barking in scene 22, I look at folder 22, open it and there it is... "Dog Barking."
The new FCP X uses Favorites or Keywords... both approaches inferior (in my opinion) to my old workflow...  So what am I missing?  How is the new way better?  Was there a better way before that I was just missing???
And now I'm getting the whiff of an even bigger problem...  I haven't encountered it myself but others are finding that once a project exceeds twelve minutes, things become terribly unstable.
Oh, well.  Growing pains, I suppose.  And people are correct, I can just use FCP 7...  but I had such hopes... such hopes....
    Dale

Yes, I know FCP X is an upgrade in name only.  That's part of Apple's PR headache over this whole debacle.  When people launch a program and 10.0 Final Cut Pro X stares them in the face, they are justified to expect that it's a true update (upgrade) of Final Cut Pro.  And with Apple overselling the product.... oh, well, it is what it is.
Most of us would have been happy with Final Cut Pro 8, a true 64 bit upgrade of the program that was working for us.
Yes, Favorites and Keywords are similar to Subclips but they are still so tied to the Master Clip.. If I Favorite 10 clips and sort by favorites, I get the Master Clips and have to hit the triangle beside them to see the Favorites.  Even if all 10 Favorites are from the same Master Clip, I get ten redundant lines I have to wade through....
The old way was better... One bin with ten uniquely named subclips.  Clear and clean....
The new program does not seem informed by anyone who ever made a movie longer than five minutes... and evidently (from all reviews) it wasn't influenced by anyone who considers himself a professional editor.  (I do not consider myself a professional editor, just an independent movie maker who writes, directs, acts, edits, etc., and who happily used Final Cut Pro for over a decade.)
I'm hanging around for FCP X 10.1... I've never seen Apple so mishandle a situation...  On a much smaller scale, it's Apple's Vista moment....
    Thanks for responding...

  • Script for moving multiple subtitle clips in the works - EXAMPLES NEEDED!

    Hi everyone!
One severe deficiency of DVD Studio Pro is the inability to move multiple subtitle clips back or forward in a track by an arbitrary offset.
I ran into this problem while I was creating a DVD from an EyeTV recording of a DVB broadcast, the subtitles from which have to be extracted to a SON file and a bunch of .bmp images with a separate piece of software, ProjectX. For some reason, ProjectX messed up the subtitle timecodes, so I had to move the entire track forward by a fixed amount. Unable to do this inside DSP, and unable to find tools that would do this for SON files, I set out to code my own tool with Python.
Currently, I have a very simplistic working version of the script, which I successfully used to shift the timecodes of the aforementioned SON file.
This got me thinking: I can't be the only one who has faced this problem. So, in the spirit of giving something back to the community, I thought I'd try my hand at turning this little script into a versatile tool for timescaling several different subtitle formats.
If possible, I would like to receive real-life examples of several different plaintext (no binary formats, thanks) subtitle formats from you guys, both those that DSP supports and those that it doesn't.
For now the tool only shifts entire tracks and works on the command line, but who knows, maybe I'll create a GUI at some point and add the ability to shift specific subtitle clips instead of whole tracks - time permitting, of course.
If you think you might have some juicy subtitles laying around, please reply or contact me directly by e-mail: elamaton (at) nic.fi. Don't worry, I won't redistribute anything you send me, it will only be used as test data.

Sounds like a very good idea... but have you seen Subtitler:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26322
Not to say you won't make a better version, and I'd be delighted if you did! Manipulating subs in DVDSP is not something I do any more - I use an external text editor for any job where more than a few subs are needed.
The problem in DVDSP is that you cannot extract the subs directly, you have to export an track item description which has the subs and time code buried within the XML. You might find that PHP will give you a web based tool to extract the subs and time codes and write a text file, which you can then manipulate.
In fact, wouldn't a web based tool be a good idea? People could upload the track description, it would export the subs and you could get it to adjust the timecodes and write a text file back in the correct format to import back in to DVDSP. Once the subs are in a text file it is a simple matter to manipulate them further...

  • Include multiple sub-interfaces in Cisco ASA for VPN tunnel

I am trying to create a VPN tunnel between two Cisco ASAs where one ASA has multiple sub-interfaces.
Say, In Cisco ASA 5550(in datacentre), I created multiple subinterfaces with VLAN ID as below:
    Inside, int0/1 : 10.1.1.0/24
    DMZ, int0/1.100: 10.1.100.0/24 (VLAN 100)
    Production, int 0/1.101 : 10.1.101.0/24 (VLAN 101)
    Management, int 0/1.102: 10.1.102.0/24 (VLAN 102)
And another Cisco ASA 5505 is only configured with 1 x inside interface Inside, int 0/1: 192.168.1.0/24
So far, I have only been able to provide outside access to one of the sub-interfaces as NAT rule on inside interface didn't work for VLANs. Hence had to issue Global NAT rule to be applied on Production subinterface so that production VLAN can have outside access. I have managed to establish VPN tunnel between two ASAs on Production sub-interface only, Source interface = Production subinterface
    Additional settings:
Have ACL to allow all sub interfaces to access outsite ( lower security level)
NAT rules is configured on Production subinterface with Source NAT Type as Dynamic PAT; when this was configured with source interface as inside, PCs behind various VLAN coun't access internet.

  • How to move multiple subtitle clips?

    Hi!
I want to move multiple subtitle clips in the timeline. How can i do that? I want to select multiple subtitles and then drag them to left about 2 minutes. Just click+drag doesn't work. I didn't find help in the manual also...
    Waiting for the small tip.
    Timo

    Hi Timo
As you have discovered you can't drag all the subs in the timeline - you can only drag one at a time... which is why you will find most people recommend creating your subtitles outside of DVD-SP and then importing them. If you have to adjust them you can then go back to this file created outside and adjust the in outs of the timecode.
One way you could save the situation (I''m assuming you made the subs in DVD-SP) is to export an item description of the track then use a little utility called Subtitler
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26322
This can extract those subtitles back out of the item description and can (I believe) adjust the timings as well and create a DVD-SP friendly STL file which you can re-import into SP... then if any others need tweaking you can go back to that external file adjust, re-import...
I've only ever tested it to see if it coul indeed extract a sub from an item description so can'tr vouch for it's other abilities - we normally use Lemony or Subtitle Workshop on a PC to adjust subs
    Hope that's some help

  • In Prelude is it possible to export my sub clips as complete files?

I work at a youth sports camp, and have a massive amount of footage to work with each week to create a highlight video. The video used is collected by multiple employees with different skill levels. Is it possible with Prelude to save just the sub clips from the ingested footage? Or do I need to save the original file that the subclip is linked to? I would like to cut out any bad footage from the weekly bin before editing begins.
    Thanks

    Hi –
In Prelude CS6 there isn’t any method for exporting just subclips as new media files. However, you can select your subclips and send them into Premiere Pro from Prelude using the “Send to Premiere Pro…” menu command under the FILE menu. This will package your subclips and create items in Premiere Pro’s project panel which you can then easily export into new files on disk.
Thanks for making the post and the request. We have heard this request from others as well and are looking into this workflow for Prelude.
    Thanks!

  • Batch Capture vs Record Now and sub clips

Can FCP do scene detection on capture?
If not can I capture an entire tape, go back and create sub clips then use the media manager to delete what I don't want.

I just completed logging and batch capturing a 1hr DV tape and the interaction between my camera and FCP is not terribly responsive. The picture quality while scrubbing wasn't very good either.
So I thought it would probably be quicker, easier on the camera [and my eyes] if I captured first then logged, or created sub clips and then delete what I didn't want - otherwise I might end up with too much data.
In PPro I just started capturing and it automatically made a new clip for every scene then all you had to do was re-name them. Very fast. You could also use sub clips but it didn't work very well so I'm a bit suspicious about doing it that way.

  • Make sub clip from a sequence?

I am a recent convert from FCP and am used to placing multiple clips on a sequence and making sub clips from the sequence.  I shoot a lot of 20 -30 minute interviews and this sub clipping from the time line in FCP was my workflow to select the best sound bites.
    What am I missing?
It appears you can only make sub clips from the source window?
    Help
    Thank you

Thank you, that is so easy - now that you showed me.
Yes as I have several clips from each segment of interviews (especially if they take breaks, or I to need shut off the camera) then I scurb through them all, by subject, which may cross over multiple clips to make sub clips and rate them based on a star system to do final assembly in a new sequence.  If do this in the source monitor I would have to load dozens and dozens of clips, one at a time to preview.
Can you suggest a better workflow?
Maybe with Prelude?  I have not even opened this app yet

  • FCP X sub clips???

Anyone know if it's possible to create subclips in FCP X???
I don't believe Steve Martin mentions this in his Ripple Training tutorial on FCPX.

    Hi
Apple really want you throw out the old ways of thinking and introduce you to a shiney ewcworld of relationsl databases and metadata. You almost have to stop thinking about your media as a bunch of files. The fact that you click on them and play them is almost irrelevant. The important thing is the metadata you give your imported clips. So the short answer is no to sub clips, but yes to setting multiple in and out points to a clip and giving each one specific keywords. Then you can display just the clips you want based on a search of keywords. it's a bit like searching a book for keywords and having phrases returned, ultimately more powerful than just cutting thevphrases out and having them in a long list. Well tharpts the theory anyway.

  • How import prior Backed-Up Fox Favorities in multiple sub-folders rather than one at a time in Fox 6.0

How do you import prior Backed-Up Fox Favorities. This involved many short-cuts and contained in multiple sub-folders.
How can I import the whole folder library rather than one short-cut at a time from each folder.

The favorites shortcuts were not IE but from Firefox. I had a operating system failure. So, after re-installing the operating system, I then had to re-install all applications anew.
After installing Fox 6.0, the problem is my prior use of folders and sub-folders with many favorites shortcuts in each.
It appears that I will need to start anew with creating a folder system in the new firefox application. Then take all of the favorites shortcuts, individually, out of folders and put them in a file in a row, in an antilog fashion. Then try to get Firefox to accept them in some fashion.
I also do not know how to (1) export IE Favorites (2) in IE (3) to an HTML?
    I am just lost.
