How to manage oracle in linux

Hi all experienced dba out there. I had been administering oracle on Windows. But now I am looking for a dba role where the OS environment is mostl likely to be LINUX. Any guys who have worked on linux environment, can you please tell me, is it really hard to manage oracle in linux as I mentioned I only have experience in windows. I have also heard there is GUI in linux which is similar to windows. Do you guys mostly use command or GUI of linux to manage your oracle at work. If command is mostly used, what are the most common commands to manage oracle. Thanks alot for your attention

Manging Oracle on Linux is no more difficult than managing Oracle on Windows.
Managing Linux is about the same difficulty as managing Windows. Both require a degree of understanding of the environment. Once you are comfortable with the environment and the terminology / language used, you should have no big problems.
I think the biggest challenges in Linux are
- a different set of editors than you have used
- a lot more time in the command line and writing batch scripts
- Microsoft has many of the nix command capabilities but with enough changes (cp -> copy) to be confusing (remember, nix came first <g>)
- the idea of 'C:, D:' drives is totally gone ... in *nix there is no 'drive', it's all just 'files'
There are several GUI utilities to help 'manage' Linux. These may not be very useful when working with Oracle environment as they tend to relate to a file-oriented (or fire server) computing environment, not a database environment. However, you might want to search the web for 'WebMin' as a possibility.
I encourage you get a good basic reference. One I like, although dated, is Essential System Administration

The "Managing Oracle9i on Linux" special accreditation and its related exam was retired August 31, 2009. Those working with Linux are urged to pursue the newer gOracle Database 10g: Managing Oracle on Linux Certified Expert (OCE) certification.
CREDENTIAL VALIDITY
Please note that for those already holding the Managing Oracle9i on Linux special accreditation - the credential remains valid indefinitely. This retirement therefore has no effect on those currently holding the accreditation.

Firstly i am new to the Peoplesoft apps and i will be doing an internal implementation for Peoplesoft HRMS.As advised by my manager, he asked me to use oracle Enterprise Linux OS for the Peoplesoft server. Well what i need to you know from the experience people here, which Linux 32 or 64 that is more suitable or better for peoplesoft to run on. Please help me on this. Thanks.

Amusing, Peoplesoft changed the support for 64-bits OEL/RHEL the day after the last reply in this thread (mine of the 2nd of March).
If it is not too late for you, go for 64-bits, it is required OEL/RHEL 5.2 min and Peopletools 8.49.14 min.

Dear master blaster of oracle . I am here to start my discovery in the galaxy of oracle.
I am currenly working on Java application using oracle database 10g .
I would like to go for 1Z0-051 certification . I am using McGraw.Hill.Osborne .SQL.Fundamentals.I.Exam.Guide.Exam.1Z0-051 as referernce
I had read the book once , It covers general ascpect and few hidden thing which we will never untill peolple has spend years working on oracle OR if oracle source code is made open.
What other reference material is availble from oracle documentation which could be relevant before I appear in the examination

I believe that book is fairly good, as are many of the Oracle press books. It covers most of the exam topics and it's failry readable.
You could always look at the Oracle Database SQL Language Reference 11g Release 2 if you want to reveiw specific topics. It's definitely not something I would read start to finish though as it is more of a reference. It also covers a lot more than what you'll need for the Fundamentals exam.
