Managing photos in iPhoto library vs. albums

I just realized that my method of importing photos from my iphone to iPhoto does not work the way I thought. I've been dragging photos into an album ("Temp to Review") from there I move them into specific folders and "delete" the ones I don't want to keep. Oh so I thought. I've just figured out that deleting from an album does not remove them from the library. This goes a long way to explain my storage problem. I now have 10K photos in my library; this is years of stuff including drek I never meant to keep. Is there anyway to identify photos in my library that are NOT associated with an album? This would enable me to scan my library to really delete the ones I never filed.

Yes. Create a smart album with the following criteria:
That will show all photos that are not in albums. Don't try deleting groups of photos much larger than 100 at a time as iPhoto is know to crash when doing so for many users.
This may be preaching to the choir but here are the keb combinations for deleting photos from various items in iPhoto:

1 - from an Event or the Photos mode: select the photo(s) and use the Delete key to move the photos to the trash bin. Then empty the iPhoto Trash bin as follows:
2 - from an album, smart album, book, slideshow, card, etc.: select the photo(s) and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move the photos to the trash bin. Then empty the trash bin as above.
NOTE: deleting a photo from an album, slideshow, book, etc., with only the Delete key only deletes that photo from that item. Deleting a photo from an Event deletes ALL occurences of that photo in the library.

Is it possible to copy the iphoto library and albums from a G5 to a macpro

I would like to copy my iphoto library and albums from a G5 10.5.8 iphoto 8 to a macpro 10.6.2 with iphoto 9. I would like all the photos and albums to appear in the macpro just as they were in the G5. I have vantecs ezshare adapter that allows you to drag files between two computers mac or windows. Copying photos should not be a problem but its the albums I want to go with the photos and appear in iphoto 9 on the macpro.

Firewire target mode is a good way to transfer the iPhoto library - make the connection and drag the entire iPhoto library at one intact as a single entity to the new computer (put it on the desktop or somewhere so as not to mess up what you have done - depress the option key and launch iPhoto on the new system and select the library you just copies (be sure not to select the one on the old computer - you do not want to convert it - conversion is a one way operation) - it should open and convert and be ready to use - then you can quit iPhoto and place it where you want and do the option launch again to tell iPhoto where it is - and do the option launch any time you want to switch between multiple libraries

How did they get there and how do you know that they are there?
If they were not imported and iPhoto is not aware of them then you can be sure your current backup is up to date and tested, quit iPhoto and drag them to the finder trash - But be very careful because if you trash any items that iPhoto knows about you will corrupt your library
Before you empty the trash, launch iPhoto again and be sure everything is working correctly
It is recommended that you never modify the iPhoto library using anything except iPhoto or iPhoto aware programs like iPhoto Library Manager including adding, modifying or deleting items, files or folders within the iPhoto library
Your current case may be one of the very unusual exceptions to this - if they were put there without iPhoto's knowledge

Same photos between iPhoto library and iCloud. Detected as duplicated wrongly

I use Gemini to clear duplicate photos in iPhoto library, it works well on my macbook pro, however when i run Gemini on my another mac, it found my photos in iPhoto library are duplicate with iCloud, which is wrong, and it cleans all pics in my iCloud(photo stream and shared photo).
I have the same settings in two macs, as well the Gemini.

I agree wholeheartedly with léonie. Uninstall Gemini and try another duplicate finder.

If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates: PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto. None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates. IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

Managing a large iphoto library

There's plenty of discussion on this topic but im not sure there is a clear winner on the best way to manage a large iphoto library stored on an external hard drive across a MacBook Air and an ipad. Ideally I want to have all my photos on the ipad for viewing and sharing, reduced file size is fine, and be able to sync with my latest photos that are to be uploaded on the mac book air.
I have aperture, and currently have my library split so old photos are on the external drive and newest ones on the macbook air. This gets around the fact i cant fit my full library on the air However, this means I can't sync with the ipad without erasing the older photos not currently in the MacBook Air.
One idea I read about was to store the originals on the harddrive and only thumbnails on the MacBook Air allowing all photos to be stored in a sync-able library. However I'm worried that splitting out the originals will mess with the library.
Any suggestions much appreciated

I have no idea where you read this but it is not possible with iPhoto - it is with Aperature
generally the best idea for iPhoto is to keep interesting and recent photos on your MBA and the complete library on an EHD using iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ - to manage the libraries and move photos as needed
as to the iPad - best to ask in the iPad forum - you can not "share" an iPhoto library with an iPad - you can only share selected photos from the library - I would think you would do this from the complete library on the EHD

I dragged one photo to the My Pictures folder in Finder. I knew it was just one photo because it was the only one highlighted in yellow. When I saw it in Finder, it was labled iPhoto. I thought it was the wrong picture, so in Finder I deleted the file. When I got back to iPhoto, EVERYTHING was missing. Events, photos, recent, and even trash. At this point, I went into my Trash. I searched for iPhoto and iPhoto was there. I opened it and it was still empty. All I want to do is to get my collection of photos back!

Best solution is to load your backup from before you did this?
Where did you drag the photo from?
Have you tried dragging it from the trash to the desktop? What size is it?
What size is your iPhoto library in the pictures folder?

Your only other option is to stop using your Mac as soon as possible to minimize precious data being overwritten to, purchase a high quality, fast external hard drive, preferably a FIreWire external hard drive such as these

using an OS X Snow Leopard install disc, format this external drive as a Mac OS extended (journaled) formatted hard drive with a GUID partition scheme and then, using a install disc of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, install a fresh copy of OS X Snow Leopard and boot your Mac to that external hard drive by using the Startup Disc icon in the OS X System Preferences Panel to boot your Mac to the external hard drive. Once your Mac is booted and running from this hard drive, then use the OS X Software Update feature to update that version of OS X Snow Leopard to OS X 10.6.8.
Then, you need to do a web search for a Data recovery software such as Prosoft Engineering's Data Rescue and purchase, download, install and use this software to perform data recovery of your iMac's internal hard drive following the proper instructions on how to use the software. to recover the data.
Be advised that any images you recover will no longer be in a format that IPhoto will read and most like will just be a folder with just the images alone without any more linkage to the IPhoto library, but I am not completely sure about this as I always have redundant backups of my entire system.
If this seems all too complicated and complex to you, you need to stop using your Mac ASAP and either contact an Apple Store or Apple Authorised reseller/service/repair center to find out how much it will cost for them to recover your data and bring your Mac in for a more professional data recovery.
I still strongly advise you purchase a high quality, large storage, fast, external hard drive to use for future data backups to prevent such a catastrophic data loss from happening, again.
Every computer user SHOULD have, at least, one external backup drive and having redundant backup drives is even better.

I can't use Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Editor to edit photos from iPhoto Library. If I choose File, Open, and then select 'iPhoto Library', error message is "could not complete your request because of a program error."

You can't do it that way. Any attempt to poke around in the iphoto library from outside iphoto is very likely to damage the library and cause you to lose your photos, so PSE won't let you. You have two choices:
1. Set PSE as your external editor, send the photos from iphoto, and save them without changing the name or format (you may need to adjust the editor prefs>Saving Files>On First Save to let you do this). Then iphoto will remember your original and the last edited version.
Be sure to choose this file in Applications>Adobe Photoshop Elements 10>Support files as your external editor, not the one at the top level of the PSE 10 folder in Applications:
2. Export the photos from iphoto, use File>Open in the PSE editor to open the images and then save them with whatever changes to name or format you like, and reimport the saved images to iphoto as new files. This way you can save as many versions as you like.

How to access iPhoto images for use in Photoshop
1. In the Finder, navigate to Users > [user name} > Pictures > iPhoto Library.
2. Control-click the iPhoto Library file and choose Show Package Contents.
3. A Finder window opens that shows the contents. The Masters folder (or called Originals folder) contains all of the photographs that are in iPhoto.
Photoshop cannot access this folder, but if you make a duplicate of the folder, the dupe will be accessible -- so:
4. Control-click the folder named Masters (or Originals) and choose Duplicate.
5, Drag the duplicate folder which is named "Masters copy" or “Originals copy” from the iPhoto Library Finder window to the Desktop.
6. Open images in Photoshop from file on desktop.

New photo app does not import all of my photos from iphoto library

I have just installed 10.10.3 on my Macbook and the new photo app does not import all of my photos from iphoto library. I have about 3200 photos in the library and only 2300 are presented for import. I only have 1 library so I didn't choose the wrong one. Any suggestions?

Upon closer inspection it appears that the missing photos are in a folder called IPhoto Library. This folder is greyed out when I choose the import folder.
When I use 'show package contents' it reveals the missing photos (below). Why is my iphoto library so scrambled! Thanks for any insight.

If you set PSE as external editor, be sure you pick the right file, which is not by any means the logical choice. You want this one:
You can also export the photos from iphoto, edit them and save them under new names and reimport the edited photos as new files. This is more trouble, but lets you save as many different versions of your image as you like (iphoto only remembers the last edited version + original).

Manage or Reference iPhoto Library?

A newbee question - what is the consensus about doing a hard import (manage) of my iPhoto library?
And what about miscellaneous pictures - just leave them where they are and Reference?

Part of the answer will rest on how you plan to use your pictures. Another part depends on your personality.
As a rule, I don't use external editors (photoshop, photoshop elements, etc..) very often. I find the editing features in Aperture to be sufficient. On occasion I will use PSE and/or a plug-in. If I was in a situation where I found myself using a lot of external editors, I would most likely consider using referenced files.
Also, how disciplined are you? Using referenced files might require you to be pretty disciplined in how you set up/manage your folders and how you set up your images. I no longer remember, maybe somebody can clarify, but I wonder if Aperture/iPhoto behaves like iTunes in that any file/folder deletion has to be done via Aperture or else it gets very confused very quickly.
Personally, I like iPhoto/Aperture for its organizational and management features. When I work with my images I prefer for Aperture to take care of the image storage. One less concern.
Of course there is a question of personal preference. Many prefer to deal with referenced files. It gives them more flexibility. For example, a person will have a much easier time switching from iPhoto/Aperture to Lightroom if they use a referenced file system.
Just my $0.02 worth, and of course YMMV. Good luck with your quest.
