Managing photos on a mac??

On my laptop I have iPhoto since ages, and I've never used it until my friend who recently told me that he uses it to manage his family pictures etc, so I tried it out and I found it really easy to put my pictures in place, but I use adobe photoshop CS6 to edit my photos, and what exactly want help from you is that I want to edit photos with photoshop, but I want to keep them arranged in iPhoto '09, if this is not possible then do let me know and I will switch back to arranging them in FINDER.... Any help will be great!! Thank you!

The following will give you tips on:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
The screenshots are for PS CS3 so may not be what you see in your CS6. However, the general idea is the same.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • "Managed Photos" Folder on MAC

I have a "Managed Photos" folder in my LR folder. It contacts a empty folder structure that looks similar to the folder tree where I store my original photos.
I'm wondering if this folder was related to my beta install...
Do you think it would be safe to delete the folder?

Do you have space to temorarily back it up to. If you do. Delete them. See if this has any affect on LR and if not delete the back-up.
You might want to makesure it is truly empty first.

  • Managing Photos on Multiple Macs

We have currently 3 Macs in the house and unfortunately the photos are spread across the 3 Macs. Some photos are on multiple machines and some on just one.
I would like to get all the photos into a single iPhoto Library. What is the best way to accomplish this?
Export all photos on all machines
    Delete the library one machine
Import all photos into a new library
Once that is done, I would like all the computers to have access to that single Library and work from that Library.
    Possible?

    gpryzby
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The easiest way to consolidate all the libraries into one is with iPhoto Library Manager
which will facilitate the moving of both pics and associated metadata.
When it comes to sharing you have two options:
    1. Go to the iPhoto Preferences -> Sharing in the principal library and enable 'Share this Library', then, in the other libraries, go to the Preferences and enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. The other users will be able to view the pictures in the main library. For this to work iPhoto must be running in the host library.
    2. If you want everyone to have total access to the library - that is, add pics, edit pics, remove pics etec., then move the iPhoto Library Folder to the Users/Shared Folder and set the File Permissions to allow everyone Read/Write access to the folder and enclosed files. Then, in each case in turn, hold down the option (or alt) key and from the resulting dialogue select 'Choose Library', and navigate to the location of the iPhoto Library Folder. Thereafter that will be the default location of the Photo Library for all such machines.
Some caveats: iPhoto is NOT a multi-user app, it simply does not have the code to negotiate simultaneous users. So, only one user can have the library open at a time, and other users attempting to open it, or attempting to save to it can corrupt the database. So backing up is the order of the day. Further, if the connection between the machines is wireless many people have reported horrendously slow import times using a wireless connection.

  • Two users on same Mac jointly managing photos?

My wife and I have seperate user names on our mac, and upload pictures from cameras and iphones under our logins.  What is the best way to joinly manage all our pictures?  In other words I'd like to have all the photos and videos in one central folder/album so that either of us can see all our photos in one location.
Right now I've shared my photos with her and vice versa, but I can only see hers when she is also logged in to the Mac, etc.
Also, if I import all her photos to my iPhoto, am I physically making duplicate copies of all those photos on the Mac, or when I import, am I really just adding those photos to my own profile without doubling the amount of space our photos take up?
I'm sure there's a straightforward way to do this...

The point of having two accounts on a machine is to keep your data separate so what you want to do involves a little bit of rule bending.
For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
    What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder - but many users report permissions issues with this on 10.7 and later - you can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

Is there a way I can stop
    this ?
No, Photo Stream is syncing with iCloud. The most recent 1000 photos in iCloud will be buffered on your mac, even if you do not import them to your photo library, if you enable My Photo Stream.
See this link:   iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
iCloud pushes all your photos to the My Photo Stream album on your devices and computers, and manages them efficiently, so you don’t run out of storage space.

  • Managing photo storage on my iPhone/iPhoto/Pictures/External Hard-drive

Hello, I need some help with managing photo storage on my iPhone/iPhoto/Pictures/External Hard-drive.
    Background:
I have 1,200 photos/videos on my iPhone 4S on the camera roll and need to delete them to save space. Most are photos/videos of my new baby which I would be devastated to lose, so I want to be 110% sure that I have them backed up properly and accessible.
I frequently hook my iPhone up to iPhoto to download all of the latest photos to iPhoto.
I have done Time Machine back ups and just did a latest one yesterday.
I would like to save my camera roll into a folder on my hard-drive so that all of these photos are in one place in case I need to access them (and not spread across different folders like in iPhoto).
My Mac (Macbook Pro - circa 2009) is now telling me that my 'Starter Disc is nearly full' and won't save all of the photos from my camera roll.
    My questions;
Are photos stored both in iPhoto and Pictures folder, and if so are they duplicates?
I've heard that Time Machine only backs up full libraries and so cannot be used to access individual photos - is this true? If so, how do you access individual photos/files from my external hard-drive?
How and where should I delete older photos from to save space on my Mac - iPhoto or Pictures? (once I know how to access them from my external drive if needed).
How do I delete all of my photos from my iPhone camera roll in one go? - I can only see a way to delete the 1,200 of them individually.
Going forward where is the best place for me to synch/upload my photos for medium term storage/access on my Mac?
I would consider myself quite intelligent but when it comes to this topic, I'm happy to be spoken to in very simplistic terms!
    Thank you.

Import the photos to iPhoto - then select the photos in iPhoto and export (file menu ==> export) to the desired location

  • Managing Photos with new iPad Air???

    Hi,
I was looking to get some insight from experienced users on the best way manage photos with the new iPad Air. Oviously, im not too familiar with the subject as, i do not use any iPad and i am trying to set one up for someone else who recently purchased one.
So here is what i need to be able to do:
There are a bunch of pictures i need to upload into the iPad (more or less 15gig for the first batch).
Id like to be able to manage these pictures as in be able to delete, organize folders, etc.
Preferably also be able to export these photos, later on, as a backup in their respective folders as previously organized in the ipad.
Mainly, the ipad will be the main storage unit of the albums, as this person enjoys viewing them on daily basis. So i believe this rule out using itunes photos syncing. After searching for a while i believe there are multiple third party app which would be better for importing, organizing and exporting photos. Im just not quite sure which as i have not experience it yet.
*This has become quite a pain since im trying to find a way to minimize the usage of a PC or MAC, so the person would be able to manage their photos with the ipad and i believe it would be simple to transfer pictures taken from their iPhone.
Any insight would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

Have a look at Photo Manager Pro.

  • Managing photos with iPhoto in iPad

My target is to manage my photos with my iPad, iPhoto and iCloud without PC or Mac. Now I have noticed that their is quite many limitations: 1) iCloud backups only the camera roll (not other albums although I have created them by the old Photo apps?) 2) in iPhoto I can copy only one photo at the same time from the photo stream to the camera roll (and after that iPad copies automaticly the copied photos back to the photo stream) 3) in iPhoto I can't create a new album from the photos which locate in the photo stream (in the old Photo app this is possible). Could somebody give hints to me if there are some other possibilities to manage photos without PC or Mac?

iPhoto for iOS uses the photos and photo organization found in the Photos app. You might just have to go back to that app to accomplish those tasks it does well and iPhoto for iOS does not.

  • How Can I Manage Photos?

I have taken 631 photos with my iPhone. I can't seem to copy them from the phone. I can't even sync them with my computer. If I choose a folder to sync the photos to, iTunes tells me this will delete all the photos on the phone.
I'm baffled as to how you can manage photos you take on the phone. Any tips?

Phoney, you have not mentioned if you are on Windows or Mac.
On a Mac, iPhoto (and iTunes simultaneously) pops up and recognizes the iPhone. Ignore iTunes. The photos display on the iPhoto panel. Create an Event and Import Selected Photos (as you would do from a camera or SD Card).
Unmount the unit on from both iTunes and iPhoto and you're done.

That is an indication that iPhoto has broken the link/file path to the orignal photo.  So make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Data loss -- managed photos mis-badged as missing referenced photos

I always import all photos as managed photos, and never use referenced photos. Yesterday, I noticed that the last 29 photos from a group of 96 photos imported Feb 18 were badged as "The referenced image’s master file has not been found."
Indeed, although I had worked on many of these images in Aperture shortly after importing them, I could now only view a large but low-res thumbnail.
Weirdly, when I right-click on one of these images and select "Manage Referenced Files..." I get a message that "The selection doesn't use any referenced files." I get the same message when I select "Manage Referenced Files..." from the File menu with the entire project selected.
Using the Finder, as well as the find and locate commands in the terminal, I have verified that the missing images are not on my main or backup hard drives (unfortunately, I use a simple rsync script for backup, and I didn't discover this problem until after the deletions had propagated to my backup).
The other 67 photos imported at the same time (same import group) seem fine, and, using the Finder, I can locate all of them in the Aperture library.
To test one user error scenario, I imported some test photos into the Aperture library and then relocated the masters to the desktop. I then quit Aperture, deleted the photos on the desktop, and relaunched Aperture. As expected, the test photos had the same "The referenced image’s master file has not been found" badge, but when I right clicked and selected "Manage Referenced Files..." I got the expected dialog, unlike when I select the same option for the missing 29 photos.
    Any ideas what went wrong?
    G5 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Thanks for responding...
It sounds pretty odd. First try to rebuild the
database...as was suggested (Option>CMD on launch of
    Aperture).
I will try this eventually. But I want to get some insight first, in case this could create more problems than it solves. I am also holding off on updating to 10.4.9 for the same reason.
This might help. If not, try to make an
adjustment on one of the images. This will force the
thumbnail to redraw. If the adjustments aren't
available for that particular image, then the image
    is really offline somewhere.
I am unable to make any adjustments on these images.
I assume you went into your Library "Show Package
Contents" to confirm they are missing. If not, try
    that.
Yes, the images are not in the folder with the other images from that import. Further, I used the unix 'find' and 'locate' commands to search my entire hard drive and backup drive, and the images were not found.
    Can you Export the image?
That was how I first stumbled on this problem -- I tried to export and got an error message that "Versions with unavailable master images cannot be exported."
The weird thing is that when I try and get the 'Managed referenced files...' dialog, Aperture claims that "The selection doesn't use any referenced files" -- that tells me this data loss might be the result of a bug and not user error.

Im trying to sync photos from my mac to my iPod nano 3rd generation, and an error keeps coming up that says "format could not be converted". How do I fix this?

    Hi newipoduser,
    Here are some possible solutions:
Do you use musicmatch jukebox on your computer? If you do, you have to go into task manager on windows and end process mim.exe. It interferes with disconnecting ext devices
    Empty your "trash/recycle bin."
If that doesn't work, try quitting all your programs, especially music-type programs, basically things that look for mp3's etc.
if that doesn't work, "log off" then "log on" and that should refresh/purge your OS system.
Finally, you can restart your computer.
    Hope one of these helps!
    Cheers,

  • How to Efficiently Manage Photos Among iPhone, iCloud & iMac

I have an iPhone 5S and a late-2009 iMac running OSX Mavericks.  My on-line storage capacity limit on iCloud has been slightly exceeded and I wish to avoid unnecessarily buying more iCloud storage.  I recently went on a trip, taking many photos and quite a few videos; I suspect they are the reason I exceed my current iCloud storage capacity limit.
Can anyone recommend a preferred method for efficiently managing photos on my iPhone, iCloud storage and my iMac?  While I normally "cloud sync" (over WiFi), today I connected by lightening connector to my iMac to deliberately transfer all my iPhone photos to iPhoto.  Now safely stored on the iMac (which is backed up each day), I thought iPhoto would offer to delete the images from my iPhone, as it used to do with my Canon digital camera.  But it did not and they're still there.
Once copied to the iMac, what's the preferred way to remove the extra photos and videos from my iPhone?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

iPhoto should have prompted you after it finished the import, asking if you want to delete. It does in mine -- version 9.5.1
One way to quickly delete the photos still on your phone is to connect the phone to your Mac and open Image Capture. It allows you to select and delete photos from the camera roll without importing them via Image Capture.

If you manually manage the device the you can remove the content from the PC after you have put it on the device. However this isn't the recommended way. At some point you'll probably need to restore it which involves wiping all the data. If you don't have all this data to hand then you'll have to try to recover it from a now problematic device first. It's much easier to sync with your library - yes you have two copies, but that's not a waste, it is prudent. As long as you have two copies you can afford to lose one knowing you have a backup. In practice I keep a complete backup of my library, in addition to the subsets of it that I can put on my devices.

I do not find iphoto to be a particularly intuitive or user friendly app to manage photos with.  Are there any other options?

    Shoebox Express
    Shoebox Pro
    Picasa

    Photo Supreme
    MediaDex
    EzyPic Photo Organizer
    Daminion
