Managing photos using iTunes
From what I can tell I can only choose which photo's to put in my iPod by having a central 'root' folder that contains further folders with photos in them.
I may then select to have only some of those folders sync'd or have all folders sync'd.
Is that correct?
Is there a better way of doing it?
Also it is a pain to have this extra root folder specificaly for the sync process as I have to copy folders/photo's from other places into the root folder in order for iTunes to find them.
Is there a way round this?
Just wondering if I have missed the point or if that is just how it works!
Thanks
Anyone?

How do I manage photos using a folder - subfolder type structure?
How do I manage photos using a folder - subfolder type structure as I have done previously within Windows? For example, my photos were stored with a folder for each year and sub-folders for each month whicheach held the photos. Can I do this in iPhoto?
For example, my photos were stored with a folder for each year and sub-folders for each month whicheach held the photos
Why bother?
Check out the search box at the bottom of the Window. (Click on the Magnifying glass, it opens it) Now click on the mgnifying glass in the search box) and select 'Date'. Now you can find all the photos from any day, month or year. If you want to find the photos from a range - say a paticular week - then you can do that with a Smart Album.
Organising photos by date means you have to remember the date the shot was taken, and after a while, and after a few thousand shots, this gets harder and harder to do, so you spend more and more time rooting through folders.
iPhoto offers a range of organising tools and each offers more possibilites to quickly find the shot you're looking for. For instance:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
I keyword on a
Who
What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 45k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
File -> New Smart Album
set it to 'All"
title contains Seattle
keyword is mountain
keyword is snow
rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
New Smart Album
Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me. -

How do I automatically sync iPhone camera photos using iTunes?
Hey, gang! I'm confused about the "Sync Photos from iPhoto" option in iTunes. I clearly do not want to transfer *all* photos (years of accumulated digicam pictures), yet when I choose "Selected albums", iTunes gives me the following warning:
"This iPhone contains photos synced with another photo library or folder. Photos and albums on “Name of iPhone” will be replaced with photos and albums from this computer. Photos taken with “Name of iPhone” will not be affected.
Well, this is bizarre--what other library or folder could my phone have been synched with? Plus, no matter what I was using, I certainly don't want to lose those photos on the iPhone!
Of course, what I really want to know is:
"How do I use iTunes to automatically transfer the photos I've taken with the iPhone to my MacBook Pro?"
P.S. I know how to transfer photos using iPhoto, but that's laborious and I really want to transfer/back up my photos as part of my iTunes ritual.Plus, it clearly indicates that there are photos on my iPhone that could well be deleted as a result of synching!
The only photos on your iPhone that could be deleted when syncing with iTunes are photos that were transferred from your computer to your iPhone, which is selected under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes. These photos should remain on your computer so will not be lost.
Do I really have to go through 800+ photos in my Camera Roll and laboriously determine if they have matches in my iPhoto library?
Photos in the Camera Roll are not included or touched during the iTunes sync process.
Photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync process are stored in the Photo Library.
The other odd thing is that there is a third album on my iPhone. It contains the very same photos as in Photo Library, but is called something else and the photos are in a different order. I am unable to delete it the way one can with a regular photo album that one has added. What's up with that?
When transferring a photo album or folder or multiple abums/folders from your computer, all photos transferred from your computer are stored in the iPhone's Photo Library. The photos in the album or albums below that were transferred from your computer include a pointer to the original photos stored in the Photo Library. This way you can view the photos in an album only be selecting the album, or all photos in all albums transferred from your computer by selecting Photo Library. The same occurs when transferring only one album or folder or multiple albums or folders from your computer.
Photos transferred from your computer via the iTunes sync process can't be deleted direct from your iPhone. Photos transferred from your computer are deleted from the iPhone the same way - via the iTunes sync process.
Photos/videos in the Camera Roll can and should be imported by your computer as with any other digital camera, which is not handled by iTunes. When there are photos/videos in the Camera Roll, the iPhone is also detected as a digital camera when connected to a computer. -

Please advise how to resolve error message - cannot be synced because it cannot be read from or written to.
Hello Janet,
I would recommend this article named 'Disk cannot be read from or written to' when syncing iPod or 'Firmware update failure' error when updating or restoring iPod found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1207
Outdated operating system software
Make sure you have the latest updates for your operating system, which may include improvements for device connections. For example, many USB and FireWire improvements have been included in Windows Service Packs.Check for Mac OS X downloads. Check for Windows updates.
Computer needs updates
Make sure you have the latest updates available for your specific computer model (or components for home-built PCs). These are usually available for download on the support website for the maker of the PC (or component). Many USB updates are listed as "Intel chipset" or just "chipset" updates on PC manufacturer's support and download websites.
Software interference
Some software can interfere with iTunes, making it unable to write files to your iPod. Think about what software you have installed, and try disabling any add-ons that might be interfering with iTunes. Check your suspected software's documentation or contact the software maker if you need assistance with disabling the application. Out-of-date or incorrectly configured security software frequently causes this issue. See these steps for identifying and troubleshooting third-party security software.
Damaged files
If one of your music files or photos is damaged, iTunes may display one of these errors when transferring that file to the iPod. If you identify a file that is causing the error, try deleting that file and reimporting it from a backup file or from the original source. You may be able to repair files by repairing the disk (see the solutions in the next section).
Unregistered .dll files (Windows)
Malware or other software may cause an issue with the digital signing of Windows XP drivers. First try restoringthe iPod using the latest version of iTunes.. If you are unable to restore it or the symptom reappears, follow the steps in this document.
Damaged disk structure
These errors can also appear if the format of your computer's hard drive or your iPod disk is damaged.
To repair your computer's hard disk—Mac OS X users, read this article for instructions. Windows users, search the Help system in Windows for chkdsk to get more information on checking and repairing the disk structure.
To repair an iPod disk—Restore the iPod or iPod shuffle using the latest version of iTunes.
Warning: Be sure to back up your data before restoring an iPod. The restore process cannot be undone. All of your songs and files will be deleted.
Corrupt iPod photo Cache
If you're getting the error when transferring photos to an iPod photo, try deleting the iPod photo Cache and then starting the photo sync again.
Lost connection
Make sure that the connections from your computer to the iPod are snug and do not wiggle or come loose during transfers. For example, if you use the wrong size dock for your iPod, it can put strain on the connectors and cause a bad connection. See these articles for more information:
Learn about iPod Universal Dock
iPod Dock: Specifications
Conflict with third-party hardware
Third-party USB or FireWire devices may also interfere with iTunes' ability to communicate with your iPod. Remove all USB and FireWire devices except the keyboard and mouse before reconnecting your iPod to the computer.
Bad hardware
Hardware failure or non-compliant hardware can cause these errors. This could be an issue with iPod hardware or with the cable or dock you're using, but more often it's an issue with the USB or FireWire card or interface in your computer. Some USB and FireWire interfaces just don't work very well. If you isolate the issue to the USB or FireWire interface in your computer, you may want to try a different port, get the computer serviced, or replace the card or interface with a better one.
If you isolate the issue to an Apple-supplied cable or dock, or the iPod itself, you can get it serviced here.
Take care,

Sync Camera roll photos using iTunes?
So I did my first sync after the initial set up. In iTunes, I chose to only sync photos from a couple of folders. Once the sync was complete, I was surprised that the photos from my camera roll was not copied to my mac. I went to the photo tab and wanted to choose to sync the camera roll photos, but there is no option for doing that.
The only work around I did, was to launch iphoto and import the photos from my iphone 3G. How do I set it up in itunes so that the photos from the camera roll will be sync'd automatically each time??When the iPhone includes photos that were captured by the iPhone, it is also detected and treated as a digital camera when connected, so such photos are not included with the iTunes sync process.
If you use iPhoto for storing photos, you can use iPhoto for the import. If not, you can also use the Image Capture application located in your Applications folder to import these photos to the designated location on your hard drive.
How do I set it up in itunes so that the photos from the camera roll will be sync'd automatically each time??
You can't, but you can have iPhoto launch automatically when your iPhone is connected which will occur only when your iPhone includes photos that were captured by your iPhone. The import process by iPhoto or Image Capture is not automatic, but you can have either one launch automatically. -
Why photos already uploaded to Ipad are erased when I sync other photos using Itunes ?
Why previous photos uploaded to Ipad (retina) are erased when I sync it through Itunes to upload additional photos ?
To keep the photos previously loaded when you previously synced you have to continue to select them when syncing additional photos. If you don't they will be deleted.

How do I remove photos using iTunes?
I've read several threads saying that the method for removing photos that were taken with a camera (not an iPhone) is through iTunes.
I tried two different methods and neither worked.
The first method was to go to the Photos page and unclick the Sync Photos From and then hit the Sync button at the bottom right. The photos were not deleted.
The second method was to click the Sync Photos From box, select iPhoto and then make sure none of the Album or Event boxes are checked. Then I hit Sync again. This also did not work.
Please tell me what I am doing wrong.
Thanks,
CliffI also have this problem with my 4S.
I have 2GB of photos on my iphone that I need to remove to free up space but have been trying for weeks with no success.
Have tried the various methods with iTunes of unticking the various folders, or deselecting the whole lot, but no photos have been deleted. I don't get any message asking me if I want to remove them.
I tried synching the other way just with a couple of photos and found it will happily sync photos from my pc to my iphone but will not remove them when unselected in iTunes.
Does anyone know what is causing the issue? -
Organizing photos using iTunes
When I add a new folder of pics or files to sync they do not properly sync in the order of the file name. Many times they are just out of order. I have tried
countless ways to fix this and yet can't figure a solution. When I need my pics to go in order from # to # it will rearrange them in the order of the date they were taken or added to the gallery, even if you delete the album and start over, the **** thing still wants to do it it's own way? Can anyone help w/out having to reshoot these files just so they are in order? Make's no sense.Photos>Album

Purchase the software.
