Managing Pop Mail with Mail

Hello all,
I'm trying to manage my Yahoo! Mail Plus account via mail. The main I want to accomplish is have Mail tell the Yahoo server if I delete a message via mail, you can delete it from the Yahoo Mail server. Digging through mail's preferences brings me two options. One is under Mailbox Behaviors. Here I can check an option to Erase Deleted Messages when: and I can select when to do. This does not effect the Yahoo Mail server as best I can tell.
The other option is under Advanced. Here I can remove a copy from the server after retreiving a message either right away, a day from now, etc. No specification for do so when deleted.
The reason why specifying when deleted is important, is because I want to save the email locally in a separate folder/mailbox, so not to keep everything saved in my inbox. But under the advanced option the closed thing to 'moved to deleted folder' is "Moved from Inbox". So if I move an email out of the inbox and into a local folder, the email will be deleted from the Yahoo Mail server.
Hopefully I've made my situation clear. Any advice? AppleScript? Gmail? MobileMe?

It does appear that you want to write a script for handling this.

  • Managing pop mail account on iPhone

I have a pop mail account on my PC with my ISP.  I've added it to my iPhone so that I can remotely check mail.  But I have only 3 folders - Inbox, Sent and Trash.  I would like to add  a folder to save messages rather than save them in the inbox.  I don't seem to be able to do this.  Even syncing my account doesn't work in this respect.
Is there a way to do this?  It seems like a fairly standard thing...

I think what you mean is that you cannot have an email POP account on a laptop and on iphone look for the same messages on the incoming server.
I mean exactly what I provided. A POP account is designed to be accessed with a single email client only. When a POP account is accessed with more than email client, the setting for removing messages from the server when downloaded needs to be off with both email clients used to access the account.
And if accessed with more than one email client, you cannot have both email clients actively accessing the incoming mail server for new messages at or near the same time. If one email client checks the incoming mail server for new messages followed by another email client doing the same at or near the same time, the incoming mail server will lock the account's Inbox mailbox preventing the 2nd email client from accessing the account's Inbox mailbox and downloading new messages if any are available. This is a temporary lock and is due to a POP account being designed to be accessed with a single email client only.
The same does not apply to an IMAP account which is designed to be accessed with more than one email client with multiple email clients being able to access server stored mailboxes at the same time.
Please answer my question which was copied from my previous post and was provided first.
*Since this is a POP account, what is your account setting with Outlook for removing messages from the server when downloaded?*

  • Using POP Mail With Two Macs?

Is it possible to use two Macs with Apple Mail? I use Mail on my iMac, and I would like to set it up on my PowerBook as well. The only problem is accessing the same mail on both computers. It seems like if I were to open a message, it would store it on the respective computer that I open it with, and I would not be able to access it with the other. Is it possible to set it up where I can see the same messages on both? I use GMail. Thanks.

Like Kappy said, it's a hassle if you are using pop mail. But no problem with imap because the "master" copy is always maintained on the imap server, and your two computers are, essentially, nothing more than mirror sites.
I don't know if GMail is pop or imap.
What you would have to do for a pop account is set up account prefs to leave message on server after downloading on at least one of the computers, if not both of them. If you do that with both, I expect you will be hearing from your pop provider real soon about excessive disk space use. If you only do it to one computer, make sure that it is the one you will always be downloading mail from first. Plus, I can't remember whether that would cause multiple copies to download or not, on subsequent mail checks, when mail is left on server; it has been so long since I have had to play that game with pop servers.
Again, imap is no problem, because imap was designed to address this very problem.

  • Here's how to set up Yahoo POP mail with instant "PUSH" functionality

Originally I used iTunes to sync and dump my POP mail settings into the iPhone during my first sync after activation.
DON'T do it this way and if you did delete that account from the iPhone and then go into the Mail settings on the iPhone and set up the mail settings under the "Add Account" feature. The top selection is Yahoo. It will simply ask you for the mail username and password. Once you complete this you will now have the greatly useful and most desired instan "PUSH" mail promised in conjunction with AT&T, Yahoo and Apple. A great thing.
All other POP mail settings are set to simply check your email every 15, 30, 45 etc minutes. This is no fun.
Once I reset the iPhone and set up the new account email is instant and you get the beloved "bing" alert as the come in.

I was able to get this to work and push email works with my Yahoo account. Unfortunately, the iPhone mail does not respect the 'reply-to' setting for yahoo mail.
When I send mail from Yahoo mail on the web, the reply-to address makes it look like the mail is coming from my standard business account.
But when I send mail from my iPhone, the "@yahoo.com" email address is all that shows up in the outgoing message!
I don't like this because I would prefer that all the email I send has the same reply-to address, so my recipients don't get confused.
Is there a workaround or fix for this?

  • Thunderbird can download and send mail with Cox POP Mail, Mail cannot?

I have Thunderbird and Mail installed.
I can download and send mail with Thunderbird.
I can't even set-up an account with Mail because it cannot find the POP Mail server.
I have Firewall on with ports 25, 110 and 587 open.
This really seems strange that I can use Thunderbird to set up and use POP Mail access to Cox, but not Mail.
    My servers are:
    pop.central.cox.net
    smtp.central.cox.net
I've followed the steps on Cox's support web site, no success.
I've already called Cox, they're clueless.
Thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Hi Todd,
Well since Tbird works, we can rule out lots of things.
Mail cannot find the POP server
You are using the Welcome to Mail assistant to do this, and when you type in your incoming mail server info it spins the gear a bit, gives an error, and says that if you continue Mail may not work -- yes? What does the error say specifically?
No disrespect at all, but the most likely problem is a typo somewhere / mis-specified username. Please go 'round once more.
    Good luck,
    John

  • Slow outgoing Pop mail with Lion- is anyone else having this problem?  Email without attachments can take 10 minutes or more to go.

Outgoing pop mail is very slow - at times 10 - 20 minutes and more, even on messges with no attachments.  This has happened since my upgrade to Lion.  My DSL line tests out ok, but Apple says it must be a slow line.  Any one else have problems?

POP is only used for incoming mail.   Some POP servers are the same as SMTP servers.
Check to make sure your internet service provider can either give you an SMTP server, or that you are using password authentication to get to an outside line with the proper port.  Outside SMTP servers are often on one of the  ports 587, 2626, 2662, and often use your full e-mail address for username authentication.

  • Is it true that Thunderbird does no longer works well with POP mail servers and only works well with IMAP servers?

Our email host is telling us that our outdated POP mail server doesn't work well with Thunderbird and it the reason we're having sporadic difficulty sending out emails with attachments when using Thunderbird (no problems when sending emails directly from the email host's web portal and bypassing Thunderbird). We'll often get notification when using Thunderbird and trying to attach PDF'd documents to an email that "Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to SMTP server timed out." The email host company is advising that this problem will be solved if we upgrade from the free POP email to the not free IMAP email. True? Or are they just using this Thunderbird problem as an excuse to sign us up for unnecessary services?

I think they are using this as an excuse.
Messages are sent via SMTP. Both, POP and IMAP are protocols to receive mail.
In any case, it would be '''their''' 'outdated POP mail server', not yours.
Check this article for troubleshooting the problem.

  • POP Mail - Go Daddy: Problem with outgoing emails

I just set-up an email account on Go Daddy with my domain name. I want to use Mail as my client and followed all the instructions to set-up the POP mail in Preferences/Account.
The problem I have is with outgoing email which get rejected due to password not accepted. But the inconsistency is that I can receive email in Mail using the same password.
    What's up here? Please help!

What is the precise error you are receiving from the server? Does it say it cannot authenticate with that username and password?
What do you have your SMTP server set as? Is it SMTPOUT.SECURESERVER.NET? If so, try these different ports.
    SMTPOUT.SECURESERVER.NET:25
    SMTPOUT.SECURESERVER.NET:80
    SMTPOUT.SECURESERVER.NET:3535
It could be that your host does not allow you to send mail through SMTP servers other than theirs. If using the above servers and ports does not work, try your ISP's SMTP server.

  • Deleted POP mail account and messages went with it.  HELP!!!!!!

To start off, I am fairly new to the Mac world. I have been having problems with Mail and my outgoing smtp server. I thought that if I deleted my pop mail account and then recreated it it would stop hanging on my outgoing mail. I am a previous Windows user and this practice causes no harm there and I mistakenly drew the same conclusion here. So I deleted the account and then set it up again and low and behold all of my messages are now gone except for the 850 or so that I have had this year.
Is there anywhere that I can find the old mail messages hidden on my mac? I'm sure that it has them saved somewhere, I just don''t know where to look. I would really appreciate any help. I had about 6000 messages from the last couple of years and I often need to search back through old emails.
    Brad

When you go to delete an account, a warning pops up displaying
"This will permanently delete the account setup information, mailboxes, and messages from your computer. Copies of messages on the mail server, if they exist, are not affected."
If you acknowlege the warning and click 'OK' then the account setup information, mailboxes, and messages are permanently deleted from your computer.
If you want to have any hope of salvaging the data from the hard disk, you'll need to stop using the computer and either install data recovery software(FileSalvage, for example) on an external HD or send the disk out to a data recovery service.
For future reference, if you find yourself wanting to start over with a Mail account-or any app-you can delete the .plist file for the app from Users/~/Library/Preferences

  • How to change POP mail to IMAP and what's with Microsoft Exchange 2007?

When I set up two of my email accounts I had Leopard. And I set the email accounts up as POP mail accounts. But now I want to change them to IMAP accounts because my school recommends the school email as being IMAP and I would like to change my main email to IMAP. My more recent email set up as IMAP.
But every time I try to make a new email it tries to set up as Microsoft Exchange 2007 and I don't even know what that is. I would rather have it as IMAP because that's what I've been told to use. I have never been good at setting up email.
So may someone please help me.
I would just like to change these accounts that are set up as POP mail into IMAP.

  • POP Mail Question

I have an iMac in my office and an iPhone 4S, an iPad Air, and a MacBook Pro that travel around with me.  In the long ago past, before IMAP really got going, I used to be able to download my POP email to a laptop, read messages, and delete them without touching the copy that was on the mail server.  My desktop computer controlled what occurred on the mail server - delete, invoke mail rules, set a time for the mail to be removed from the server.  My mail was downloaded to my computer and a copy was kept there in lieu of the mail server.
I'm trying to do the same kind of thing with at least one of my handhelds or the MacBook Pro - be able to read and either reply to the sender, forward to appropropriate people, or delete or keep the message on the device until I was through with it - without all that activity being synced to every device I own.  (I honestly don't recall whether or not those actions somehow got back to the mail server.)  Meanwhile, my desktop computer and perhaps my iPhone or iPad would be the interface to the cloud and manage the mail - what happened on one device would be synced to all the machines using IMAP mail.
I'm a little confused by what I'm reading on these forums about this matter.  Some have said outright that iCloud does not support POP at all, and others give at least some hint that it may be possible to set up the kind of thing I'm looking for above.  So my basic question is:  can I set up a POP account on my laptop that reads email from my iCloud mail account independent of the interaction between my iMac and the iCloud mail?  If I can do this, would someone kindly tell me what mail server I should be using - clearly mail.me.com is not the correct choice.

iCloud email does not support POP. The old mobile me account was POP, but was converted to IMAP when iCloud took over.

    Hi Rob
It sounds like my problem is the same as yours..... Sorry, but I'm a bit of an iPad dummy so am writing for some more clarification...
My problem is..... I am away from home and only travelling with my iPad, however we have sold our house and my bigpond email address on my iPad is getting clogged with all the solicitors stuff etc, so I really need these emails for my files...
I want to be able to backup these up (so that I can retrieve them later to print out and file) and delete them from my iPad...
I've just created an iCloud email account (I think) is this what you did? So should I forward all my emails to this iCloud email account? And will I be able to retrieve them later?
I hope you login here to see my question.....
    Thanks Janet

  • Is there any way to sync POP mail between iOS and Mac devices via the cloud?

The title says it all.  I have Comcast email and would like to keep three devices in sync with email like I do with calendars and contacts.  I use an iPad, iPhone, and a Mac Mini and am having a hard time configuring the three to stay in sync.  It seems that a .me account is needed for cloud email, which I have, but that only seems to send via the .me outgoing server.  So, while a .me account can retrieve the POP mail, it doesn't send outgoing mail correctly for me.  Maybe it just isn't possible.

When I send mail from my mobile devices, it comes from my .me account.  Same for my mac.  But, I don't care because no matter which email the recipient responds to, I get the response.
I use my .me account now as my primary account, but I have a ton of folks who still use my cox account as my primary email address.  Most don't even know which account the email is being directed to.

  • How to preserve messages on ISP after setting up mac POP mail?

I recently (YESTERDAY) set up POP mail (mail 3.3) on my new macbook to collect mail from my yahoo account. AFTER downloading my yahoo inbox I noticed that one of the default advanced settings in mac mail was set to ''remove copy from server > after one week' from the ISP (yahoo).
As I certainly do not want this to happen I unchecked that option so that mac mail will not delete any messages it collects using POP and the contents of my yahoo inbox will remain unchanged.
But I'm worried that, even though I've unchecked the instruction to delete messages from server in 1 week, that somehow the instruction to delete will still be 'in the system' and that the contents of my yahoo inbox that my mac mail has already collected will somehow be 'tagged' for deletion in a week. Note that currently all my yahoo inbox messages are still in my yahoo inbox, but will they be safe in a week? Should I do something to safeguard against this like move those message out of my yahoo inbox and into a separate folder? Or ??
    Any advice appreciated

The default behavior for accessing mail via POP is to transfer the messages to the client and delete them from the server, but some clients can disable the erasure. However, after doing this, some clients are unable to retrieve the unerased (but read) messages for the second time. I haven't tried with Mail to see if this works with Yahoo; I know for a fact that it doesn't with our corporate mail server.
Is there a possibility to use IMAP instead of POP? (Which is what I believe .Mac mail uses)
