Managing RAC intances

Hi all,
I am applying new dba job online, and I encountered JD which says:
•        Must  have good experience in RAC environment and troubleshooting
•        Must  have experience implementing a multi-node RAC environment in Oracle 10g
Can you share me what are daily activities to monitor or manage a RAC environment?
Can you share me docs & links on how to install 10g RAC on a laptop VM environment?
Do installing 10g and 11g have the same procedure?
Thanks a millions for your unfailing sympathy and undying love.
mk

10g? This might not be a job worth pursuing. That's a personal decision for sure, but let me say that I would probably pass on this "opportunity" if the company is still using Oracle 10g RAC.
Can you share me what are daily activities to monitor or manage a RAC environment?
Same as the activities for a single-instance database. And use Enterprise Manager....
Can you share me docs & links on how to install 10g RAC on a laptop VM environment?
Do installing 10g and 11g have the same procedure?
Sorry, but I'll only provide for a more recent version. For installing Oracle 11g or 12c RAC in a VM environment, Google for "oracle 11g rac virtual box" and you should get plenty of help.
10g and 11g do not have the same identical procedures. Guess why.....they are completely different versions!!!! So you should refer to the 11g-specific documentation:

    Regards,
SohaybAnd he should refuse to give it to you. I've not worked with RAC, so don't know what might require root access, but I can say that if I were an SA I wouldn't give it out either. If you need to do something that requires root access, you need to be working with your SA. And this is why it is important for DBA and SA to have a good working relationship.

  • Accessing and Managing RAC 10g database with 9i OEM

can i Access and Manage RAC 10g database with 9i OEM? If yes How?

9i EM can 'see' a 10g database and perform some basic functions (rsp. all what is known to 9i). But it cannot manage any 10g functionality , because it doesn't know it. So such a constellation doesn't make really sense. On the other hand 10g EM can manage 8i,9i and 10g databases.

How can I run oem from RAC2?When EMCA (started on local node) configure Database Control for Oracle RAC, you configure the Database Control for each instance in the cluster. However, by default the Database Control Console will only start on the local node. On every other node of the cluster, only the Enterprise Manager agent will start. This is because the Database Control Console opens several connections to the database. If an instance of the console is running on every host in the cluster, then you may easily exceed the maximum number of permitted open connections.
To remedy this situation, the Database Control is started only on the local node. On every other node, the commands emctl start dbconsole and emctl stop dbconsole only start and stop the agent. Each of the remote agents will upload their respective data to the console running on the local node, from which you can monitor and manage all the targets in the cluster.
To modify the existing configuration in a release 11g and later database, use the following command where nodename is the public name of the node and node_list is a comma-delimited list of nodes where the database is configured:
$ emca -reconfig dbcontrol –cluster –EM_NODE nodename -EM_NODE_LIST node_listAlso you can configure more than one Database Control Console in a RAC Database
In this scenario, there are two Database Control consoles running, one on node1 and the other on node5. From either of these consoles, you can manage and monitor all targets in the cluster.
You can use this command to start the console on multiple nodes. For instance, on an 8-node cluster with nodes node1, node2, node3, node4, node5, node6, node7, and node8, you
can run the following commands in succession:
    $ emca -reconfig dbcontrol –cluster –EM_NODE node1 -EM_NODE_LIST node2,node3,node4
$ emca -reconfig dbcontrol –cluster –EM_NODE node5 -EM_NODE_LIST node6,node7,node8For information about the current cluster configuration, run the following command:
$ emca -displayConfig dbcontrol –clusterHope this helps,

I don't know what your cron jobs do. If (for example) they logon to the database through a service published by the scan listeners, they will be happy. If they logon using a deterministic connect string, you have a problem - a problem caused by mis-using the system.

what other utilities we can use to manage RAC DBs, any body has some notes for RAC Utilies?

  • Restore single instance rman backup to rac database

Hello all. I have a 10gR2 single instance database that I have been taking backups using the oracle's suggested backup strategy, that is, once full database backup and incremental backups here and there. That's is all fine as I have (many times) being requested to rollback the database resulting in all operations being sucessfull.
However, since this is somehow a pre-certification database, I am now being tasked to restore this database to what is going to be our production database, which is a 10gR2 rac database. I have already set up the RAC database sucessfull.
Now, my question is: How can I take one of the backups that I have on the single-instance database and restore onto my RAC database ?
    Some information about the infraestructure:
Both operating systems are HP-UX. Single instance is 11.23, RAC database is 11.31.
Both database are using ASM as datafiles storage and flash recovery area storage.
    Any help will be appreciated!
    Thanks!

In general terms, there are several ways you can convert a single instance into a rac intance, and it involves much more activities than just adding redo threads.
    Use of DBCA
    Enterprise Manager Grid Control
    rconfig utility
Considering your case, if you don't currently have Grid Control, the first option is rconfig.
    1. Migrate your database from the current environment to the target environment by a regular cloning procedure, this will create a single instance into your rac environment. Your regular rdbms rac installation allows you to manage both, single instance and rac instances. Use this procedure to clone your database to the target RAC environment using recovery manager --> http://madrid9999.googlepages.com/rmancloneadatabase
    2. Once you have started your database in the RAC environment proceed with the rconfig tool, this requires some files to perform the conversion, the ConvertToRAC.xml file which is located at $ORACLE_HOME/assistants/rconfig/sampleXMLs
    3. Once you copied/edited the ConvertToRAC.xml file, you have to run the rconfig. Save the ConvertToRAC.xml under a different file name.
    rconfig editedConvertToRAC.xml
    4. For further reference on the rconfig command, you may refer to this page Oracle® Real Application Clusters Installation Guide

  • OEM in 10g RAC (10.2.0.2.0) has some troubles!![ help]

    Hi, all.
The database is 2 node RAC (10.2.0.2.0 ) on 32 bit windows 2003 EE SP1.
The Enterprise Manager is not Grid Control.
I created a RAC database by using DBCA, and Enterprise Manager was
    installed by default.
Currently, It seems that the database has some troubles.
Depending on the cases, OEM sessions go into pending status.
Now, I stopped "DBconsole windows services" and thus emagent is not running.
    1. Does Enterprise Manager have something to do with ADDM and AWR snapshots?
    2. Are there any Enterprise Manager bugs?
I have to make a quick report to my boss. :(
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Dear rodneyli.
    Thanks for your reply.
My understanding is it's better to use Grid Control to manage RAC. From the >documentation, it says database console can be used as well but i haven't used it.Could you give me the html link, which explains the difference between Grid Control and DB console?
    Thanks and Regards.

  • Enterprise Manager Menu Missing

Running CF8 with multiple instances. After doing a hot fix
update, I lost my "Enterprise Manager" menu in the coldfusion
administrator for my primary instance. I know it's not suppose to
be in my secondary instances, but now it's not in the one I managed
those intances in. How do I get it back?

    OK, I found it.
There is a folder called "entman" in the wwwroot
cfide\administrator folder. There is also one of those under:
    JRun4\servers\cfusion\cfusion-ear\cfusion-war\CFIDE\administrator
or at least there should be. Mine wnet missing. I just copied the
one from my root cfide\adminitrator down to the one under JRun and
    it came back.

  • Tuxedo 7.1 and RAC

Have anyone deployed Tuxedo 7.1 with Oracle RAC
    Specifically:
    - Is this a supported configuration?
    - Will the Tuxedo application transparently failover in case of a node failure?
    - Any specific configuration or limitation?

    Lior,
The enhancements to Tuxedo needed to ensure that Tuxedo XA transactions
access at most one instance of a RAC configuration and needed to ensure
prompt and proper recovery of Oracle 10gR1 transactions in the process of
commit at the time of a RAC failover are supported in Tuxedo 9.1 and as
rolling patches for Tuxedo 8.1 and Tuxedo 9.0. Tuxedo 7.1 does not include
these enhancements, so Tuxedo 7.1 with Oracle RAC is not a supported
    configuration.
Further information on support of Oracle RAC in Tuxedo is available in the
"Using Tuxedo with Oracle Real Application Clusters" documentation at
    http://edocs.bea.com/tuxedo/tux91/ads/adorac.htm#248431 .
In one of your later messages, you mentioned that you are using Oracle 10g,
but didn't mention if it is 10gR1 or 10gR2. Oracle 10gR2 RAC introduced the
concept of DTP Services, which were not available in 10gR1. The use of DTP
services greatly simplifies the RAC environment, and allows Oracle RAC to
automate instance failover and failback and transaction recovery. With DTP
services in 10gR2, the use of FAN and TMS_rac_recovery to manage RAC
instance recovery is no longer needed.

  • New To Rac 11g

    Hello,
I am new to RAC and i need some guidance here. I will be responsible to set up RAC on the servers which i think i should be able to manage. My concern is that since i'm new to RAC i would need to refer to some quick material on how to manage RAC instances e.g startup/shutdown nodes , maintainence , backups etc..
Could some one give me a place where i could refer to really quick on how to manage RAC rather than going through in depth oracle documentation, which i surely plan to go through in the future. I need something really quick to get started.

  • Hetrogenous RAC - is it possible ?

Is it possible to compose a RAC Cluster using nodes runing different OS's ( I suspect the answer is no ) but I want to tease out a couple scenarios
I recall challenging Oracle on their Grid concept (I suppose really now replaced with their cloud concept ) which was lauded as being able to add in any spare servers to consolidate processing power. I then asked the question could you therefore combine a Windows Server with unix server in regards to the processor grid. In pure grid theory the answer should be yes but when pressed Oracle they admitted no.
Q1. So I am guessing the same is true of RAC - I suspect you could not have one node as Windows and another node as unix ( the difference in the file path specification alone would surely scupper it ).
Q2. What about a unix node and a linux node ?
Q3. What about binary compatible nodes eg one node being RHEL and the other being OEL ?
Q4. Finally what about 2 nodes that were the same OS but had a slight different version of ORACLE_HOME eg 11gR1 and 11gR2 ?
    any thoughts appreciated,
    Jim

In pure grid theory the answer should be yes but when pressed Oracle they admitted no.RAC is not Cloud. Despite what the marketing suits may spin.
Q3. What about binary compatible nodes eg one node being RHEL and the other being OEL ? Yes. In fact did this recently on a test cluster. Not a good idea though (obviously) as there can be some kernel driver issues (e.g. ADVM of 11.2.0.2 runs on 5.4 kernel and not on the 5.7 kernel). Also makes o/s management more complex. I'm a big believer that each and every server node in a Grid/RAC needs to be identical at o/s level. Same kernel version, same drivers, same rpm's, same +/etc+ configs (such as hosts, multipath, udev) and so on.
Q4. Finally what about 2 nodes that were the same OS but had a slight different version of ORACLE_HOME eg 11gR1 and 11gR2 ?Well, you can have multiple Oracle Homes on the same server. So you should be able to have a 10 node Grid, policy managed RAC, server pool 1 running a 10gr2 RAC database as 5 instances, and server pool 2 running a 11gr2 RAC database as 5 instances. Offhand I do not see why this would not be possible.
Some years ago (due to circumstances) I had another Oracle Home on node 1 of a 4 node RAC, running a standalone Oracle db instance on the RAC sever node that was running RAC db instance 1. (since has moved that to its own dedicated server). So I do not see why this 2nd Oracle Home could not run another RAC db version...
any thoughts appreciated,Well, the obvious thought is why do you want to throw heterogeneous stuff together into an Oracle RAC? To achieve what need, and address which requirement, exactly?

  • Oracle RAC on solaris Cluster - advantages

    Hi,
I wonder what are the advantages of installing Oracle Rac on solaris Cluster.
Oracle Rac is a cluster solution by itself and puting it to solaris Cluster will complicate a whole system a lot.
One advantage I know iis that solaris cluster will secure a voting disks but those could be also secure by using NFS.
Please give me your opinion if its worth in general to iinstall RAC 11g in solaris cluster 3.2.
How do you think, will Oracle extend the solaris cluster solution for databases in the future ?
    Many thanks in advance.

CRS is built to manage RAC. Using any other cluster software for RAC will complicate the solution without adding benefit.
But if you are building a cluster to run application servers etc, then it would be better to use a more flexible cluster solution. (e.g NOT crs)

  • 2 Node RAC -Adminstrator Manged ORpolicy-managedDatabase - which is better

We are planning to build a 2-node RAC 11gR2 . I went through the documentation and found that administrator managed datbase is better when the no of nodes are very less .
Need your inputs on this as we are still in the designing stage of the setup.

    Shashi,
It all goes back to your objective. As you mentioned, it is two node RAC and I assume that you are gonna use this cluster database for one application. If that is the case then go with Administrator managed database because then you will have more control and require less configuration. Policy managed is more useful when you are implementing a true grid solution where database is used as a service and multiple applications are accessing data via the database services provided inside the large real application cluster system. When I say database as a service, people may want to consolidate smaller databases into the bigger RAC system to reduce operating cost and overhead while providing same level of database access to the applications.
So to answer your question, go with Administrator managed RAC. I hope I have provided you enough information for your decision :-)

  • Oracle EBS R12 implementation scenarios

    Dear All,
We have below 3 different scenarios, please give your comments/suggestions; keep in mind client wants cheeper solution.
HP DL580 G5 servers will be used with 64bit Redhat Linux 5.0 on all scenarios.
    Scenario 1:)
Oracle EBS R-12 implementation with RAC & Load Balancer
    Required H/W - 8 Server (4 Production & 4 UAT / Development), Hardware Load balancer
    Software - RHEL 5.0 OS
    Licenses - Oracle RAC
Advantages – High Availability solution, Redundancy
Disadvantages – Specialized network administrator required for load balancer management, Complex System and costly
    Scenario 2:)
Oracle EBS implementation with Active Passive mode / fail safe
    Required H/W - 8 Server, 4 Production (2 active & 2 passive) & 4 UAT / Development as replica of production environment
Software - RHEL 5.0 OS & Cluster software on OS Level clustering
Licenses – OS Cluster from Red Hat
Advantages – OS Level clustering is cheaper compared to Oracle RAC
Disadvantages – 2 Servers will used as Passive will not be optimally utilized they will only come into play when primary servers fail.
    Scenario 3:)
Oracle EBS implementation Dual tier (DB & APPS)
    Option – I (Active + Active)
Required H/W – 2 Servers for production and 2 UAT / Development as replica of production environment
Software – RHEL 5.0 OS & Cluster software on OS Level clustering
Licenses - OS Cluster from Red Hat
Advantages – All the servers are optimally utilized
Disadvantages -if one of the servers fails you might experience performance issues as both application and database services run on one node till server that failed is brought live.
Option – II (Active / Stand BY)
Required H/W - 2 Servers for production and 2 UAT / Development as replica of production environment, 2 server of UAT will be configured for stand by
    Software – Oracle data guard
    Licenses – oracle data guard
Advantages – Simple configuration and easy to maintain when compared to RAC and OS clustering
    2) Will not experience performance problems when one of the primary fail .This is achieved by shutting down UAT or test instances till the issue on primary server is addressed
Disadvantages - Sudden spike in load cannot be addressed since load balancing feature is not available.
    Best Regards,

Scenario 1:) Oracle EBS R-12 implementation with RAC & Load Balancer
When designing for "High Availability", this is quite a common infrastructure. It is pretty straightforward, though you are right, you need additional skills in managing RAC and Network. On the other hand, most larger companies have load balancers operational already. RAC may be expensive, however, if you want availability, it is what you will have to pay for, if you really cannot afford any downtime. Consider RAC when either of the following will be answered "No"
    1) Can your customer really not afford more (unplanned) downtime than 20 minutes.
    2) Is the maximum size of your hardware (single node database tier) sufficient to handle the amount of concurrent users in peak and will it be able to handle the expected growth for the next 12 months.
If either of the above questions answers no, consider RAC. Otherwise, one of the two alternative scenarios will probably be better.
Scenario 2:) Oracle EBS implementation with Active Passive mode / fail safe
This scenario requires additional skills as well: OS Cluster Administration skills. The main advantage in this situation is that the architecture in which EBS has to operate is quite simple. No clustering (EBS will operate on one db node and one appnode). Issues you might encounter: If dbnode fails, what will your appnode do? Will it have to be restarted? What about downtime in such a case? How much can you afford (see scenario 1). You will end up with some 'dirty' data in your database (concurrent manager). It might be necessary to clean that out first.
Another question to answer is how much do you trust your hardware/os. If it (almost) never failed on you for the past years, why would it be different in this situation. Having an active/passive cluster can be a costly architecture as well (half of your capacity being passive...)
Scenario 3:) Oracle EBS implementation Dual tier (DB & APPS)
    Option – I (Active + Active)
I suspect you mean to establish a cluster that runs database package on node 1 and application package on node 2, each of them having the other node as failover node. In this situation, you will definitely encounter a performance degradation, but this can be managed by oversizing each of the nodes and/or defining a threshold for performance degradation and keeping this in mind when sizing the hardware. You would still need the cluster managing skills, though.
Option – II (Active / Stand BY)
This option will deliver you more High Availability, because this is a truly disaster resilient solution. Dataguard will duplicate the database, taking away the Single Point Of Failure(SPOF), which the database is in all previous scenarios. You should keep in mind though that the UAT environment will be affected by the standby database activity (not very much, but nevertheless). You will need additional skills, like Dataguard administration skills. I could argue about your statement that it will be easy to maintain, compared to RAC. However, like I said in my comments about Scenario 2, the operational architecture for EBS is quite simple in this architecture as well. Consider the implications on the application tier when your database switches/fails over to the standby.
Conclusion: There is no yes/no to each of the proposed scenarios. You will have to discuss with your customer to find out what the requirements are on a business level and translate them to an IT solution.
The solution should meet the needs for which it is realized and the people should be able to manage/maintain the solution. Additionally, the investment should be in line with the solution the customer requires.
