What is needed to install an Oracle 9i database
on Mandrake?

Hi Claudia,
I'm trying to install 9i 2r on Mandrake 9 too.
In fact, I've installed procedures finished with one error message. But I cannot use the bank.
If you need some help ask me and I'll try to help you.

I had the same problem with Oracle 9i on Mandrake 8.1. I am not sure if the same fix will work or not. See my 9i on 8.1 notes at:
    http://members.home.net/joseph.j.flynn/oracle.htm
    snip---
You will get a link error after all of the copying and unpacking has been done somewhere in disk 3. Leave the error message up on the screen and go edit the $ORACLE_HOME/bin/genclntsh script. Blank out the LD_SELF_CONTAINED env var. Save and execute the script. Hit the retry button on the installer. The alternative approach to this involves downgrading the binutils but that seemed to get awfully messy to me. (thanks to a post from Helmut Seruega for this fix)

  • Installation problem with Oracle 8.1.7 on Mandrake 8.1

    Hi all,
I am trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 (Rel 3) on Mandrake Linux 8.1. I changed all the parameters, tested everything, created the users (oracle & apache) and groups (oinstall & dba) as per the documentation. I downloaded the Oracle's "tar" file from the Oracle's web site. I unzipped that in "/shared" directory on my PC. I changed to "/shared/Disk1" directory and gave "./runInstaller". A window is opening with the following buttons.
    About
    Deinstall products
    Exit
    Help
    Installed products
    Previous (disabled)
    Next
Only "About" and "Deinstall products" buttons are working. None of the other buttons are working. When I press "Next" nothing is happening.
Could anybody help with this problem. I really appreciate it.
Thank you very much in advance,
    Murali.

    Hi all,
This problem got solved. Its very silly thing. Number lock should be off, when you are running Oracle Installer. It worked for me. (This is for Mandrake Linux 8.1)
    Regards,
    Murali.

  • Problem install Oracle 8i (8.1.7) on Linux Mandrake 8.1

    Hello,
I want to install Oracle 8i Enterprise Edition (8.1.7) on a Linux Server (distribution : Mandrake 8.1).
I do all the task execpt the kernel configuration :
    - swap 273Mo + a temprorary file swap 300Mo
    - glibx 2.1 installation (compatibility from Red Hat 6.2 and glibc 2.1 compatibility SDK) -> i have glic2.2
    - install of JDK 1.1.8 from blackdown.org
    - 4 directories created as described in the article "Installing Oracle8i on red hat linux 7.1/7.2 (http://www.idevelopment.info/data/DBA_tips/Linux/LINUX_2.shtml)
    - add groups oinstall, dba, oper
    - add user oracle
    - permission changed on the directories
    - environnement variables for the oracle user
When i launch the command ./runInstall as oracle user and from the directory /usr/src/Disk1 (i decompress linux81701.tar in the directory /usr/src) in XTerm window, there's no GUI that appear, and in the XTerm window, there's no error.
I think i don't set the good value to the DISPLAY variable.
    DISPLAY=SRV-LINX1:0.0
where SRV-LINX1 is the name of my server. In th documentation, they say DISPLAY=<Any X-Windows Host>:0.0
    Can you help me.
    Thanks.
    Best regards
    Raphael KISTER

    Benny,
cd to the .../ctx/lib directory and check the ORACLE_HOME at the type of that file. Fix the path in the file or make sure that it's set propertly in the env of that shell.
    Type make -f ins_ctx.mk
Linking should complete w/out error messages in shell, then tell Oracle Installer to ignore.
This worked for me on RH 7.2, see http://www.alsutton.com/oracle_install.html for more details, or reference the text below.
    An error may occur towards the end of the install on ${ORACLE_HOME}/ctx/lib/ins_ctx.mk, to fix this I did the following;
    1. Start a new shell
    2. Type cd ${ORACLE_HOME}/ctx/lib
    3. Type vi ins_ctx.mk
    4. Inser a line at the top of the makefile which sets the ORACLE_HOME to the correct value. (Or set the ORACLE_HOME environment variable to the correct value).
    5. Save the file and close vi
    6. Type make -f ins_ctx.mk
Once the make is complete tell the Oracle install procedure to ignore the error.

  • Oracle 8.1.6 jre problem on Linux Mandrake 7.2

I tried to install Oracle 8.1.6 on a Linux Mandrake 7.2 distribution using bash (sh is a link to bash) as shell and glibc 2.1.xx (this is the last Mandrake distribution)
runInstaller script died complaining about command not found. Running the runInstaller bin in install/linux folder complains about not finding jre 1.1.8. I found jre in the stage subfolder and tried to run it manually but i fails (maybe java classPath). I tried even installing jre 1.2.2. the same failure.
I tried also with ksc & csh: nothing.
    Any idea??
    Thank you.

You need unset JAVA_HOME, for example
    $ JAVA_HOME=''; export JAVA_HOME

  • Problem with VM in Mozilla 1.1 for Mandrake 9.0

Alright. I'm really not sure what's going on here... I'm trying to get the java_vm working on my i686 Mandrake box. It was working fine on my 8.2 but for some reason it's screwy now...
So I download/install (via rpms from Sun's site) the j2re and I find the Netscape plugins that go into my plugins dirs ( /usr/lib/mozilla-1.1/plugins/ )
I go into mandrake, check about:plugins and it gives me a list including application/x-java-vm, and it says it's operational
But now, every time I try to access a java plugin it shuts off the entire program and pretends it was never running.
Any clue what I can do about this? Might be something to do with bringing over old preferences from my old 0.9.8 mozilla? I figured that I might try a Mozilla forum with this, but the exact same problem happens with galeon... any suggestions?

    Hi.
I'm with the same problem, I tried other versions of j2re and mozilla and nothing worked.

  • Cannot install JMF under Linux Mandrake 10

I simply cannot install JMF under the Mandrake 10 Official Linux distribution. I downloaded the jmf-2_1_1e-linux-i586.bin file and tried to execute it as root. It unzipped some files then showed me an error message about AWT and GTK+. I found a hack consisting of modifying the .bin file to have the PATH variable point to SUN JDK, the error does not show up, but the installation still does not work. In fact, the installation works, but the Diagnostics applet keeps telling me than class files are not present. My Mozilla 1.6 Java plugin is working and displaying the applet. My JMF lib directory does not contain sound.jar, such jmf.jar. I set the CLASSPATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH according to the readme.html file. I would like to know if it is a compatibility problem with Mandrake 10, the 2.6 kernel or if JMF just DO NO work under Linux. In the latter case, JMF is a violation to the Java portability philosophy and I would never use it on my own initiative, just if I were asked to.
After the files are unzipped, I have the following warning and error messages.
    Warning:
    Name: HorScrollBar
    Class: XmScrollBar
The specified scrollbar value is greater than the maximum
scrollbar value minus the scrollbar slider size.

    java.lang.Error: Can't open video card 8
    java.lang.Error: Can't open video card 9
    Done.
Even if I do not have a working video capture card (I have an ATI All-in-Wonder 128 but it is not working under 2.6 kernel), JMF should work because some people do not have a video capture card. I also tried with the cross-platform ZIP file, but this one does not contain sound.jar either and the Diagnostics applet keeps complaining about missing class files. I tried to search on the Web for solutions to this problem or for a way to change the CLASSPATH used by the Mozilla Java plug-in (if it uses a different CLASSPATH than the one from the environment variable), but nothing, nothing. Is there a distribution from which JMF would work better than Mandrake 10? Or can JMF work only under Microsoft Windows or Sun Solaris? I also tried Blackdown, but a README file directed me to the Sun's page, nothing to download here about JMF.

well, your not the only one.
I have it working in Debian, and JDS.(JMF is setup automatically in JDS).(2.6.6 kernel)
I looked at the installation structure of JDS, and was able to duplicate what they did for Debian.
Maybe it will work for Mandrake two??
ok, all you have to do is copy or create soft links from your Mozilla directory, just like you did with the java plugin, and link to all the *.so files in JMF-2.1.1e/lib directory.
    Should work.
I also read that not haveing the native files only matters if you are doing Capture. not play.
to get your ATI All-in-Wonder 128 to work, make sure you install the correct driver, and have it working under linux, then try it in JMSTUDIO

    Hi,
I hope somebody can help with this. I'm getting an error message during the installation for oracle 9.2 on mandrake linux 9. An error get thrown saying the IP address of a host cannot be determined.

Anyone know how to resolve this error and whether or not it is very critical to the oracle installation?
    Cheers
    Johnny

    Hi johnny,
You should first check the hosts file to see if the correct hostname and the IP address are shown. You can also check if the "hostname" command returns the correct result. If everything looks good so far, then next check if command "nslookup" returns the correct IP address. If the nslookup <hostname> command returns error, you will need to talk to the Domain Name Server (DNS) administrator to correct this network configuration problem.

  • Mandrake Linux 8.0 - can't get Oracle Universal Installer to run

    Hi all.
I'm having trouble getting Oracle's Universal Installer to run.
I'm trying to become DBA certified, so I went and purchased
    (among
other materials) a book titled "Oracle8i for LINUX Starter Kit",
authored by Steve Bobrowski, published by Oracle Press / Osborne
    McGraw-Hill, ISBN 0-07-212442-3.
The book includes a CD-ROM with Oracle8i Enterprise Edition,
Release 2, version 8.1.6 for LINUX.
I'm running an Intel P-III 500 MHz with 512MB RAM, 30GB hard disk
exclusively configured for Linux (no other O/S on it) and Oracle
(so LOTS of hard disk space is available), Matrox Millennium G400
    video card (32MB).
My hardware exceeds all requirements listed in aforementioned
book, and also in Oracle's own documentation (from their web
    site).
I'm running Mandrake's Linux 8.0, PowerPack Edition, with:
    kernel = 2.4.3
XFree 4.0.3 (and I've also tried 3.3.6, with identical results
    to those listed below)
    glibc 2.2.2
I've followed the book's instructions to the letter, and set up
the environment variables, oracle user, and subdirectories as
    required.
    So far, so good.
OK. Now, here's where the problem appears:
I log in as the oracle user, and try to start the Oracle
Universal Installer (following the instructions in the book)
    as follows:
    cd /mnt/cdrom
    ./runInstaller
The computer tries to do some stuff, then spews the information
listed at the bottom of this posting to the screen. I press
<ENTER> after "OK" and get dumped back to the bash prompt.
That's it. I can't go any further. No Oracle Universal
    Installer.
By the way, I've also downloaded Oracle8i Enterprise Edition
Release 3, version 8.1.7 from Oracle's website, and tried to
install that, too. Exactly same results.
The nice folks at Oracle have politely told me to get lost,
and not bug them for unpaid support.
I'd really like to get this stuff up and running, so I can
start studying and practicing for DBA, but I need help 'cause
    this problem is beyond me.
    So... can anyone help??
    Thanks in advance.

    I have Mandrake 8.0 on PII-600, 256 RAM. I used the downloaded
    8.1.7. Edit JRE_LOCATION in Disk1/install/oraparam.ini to point
to your version of JRE 1.1.8 v3 (JRE from
    http://www.backdown.org). Then try with NUMLOCK=OFF.
I just clicked the 'typical' installation. It failed at the end
and did not install the database manager. The error message was:
    SIGGEV received at bfffea90 in
    /u01/app/oracle/jre/1.1.8/lib/linux/native_threads/libjava.so
    Process terminated
Writing stack trace to javacore30299.txt... OK

If you get beyond this point, let me know. Good luck!

  • Need help on installation of 8.0.5 on rh 6.1 and mandrake 7.0

have anyone successfully installed oracle 8.0.5 on redhat 6.1 or mandrake 7.0? i can only installed on rh6.0.... any idea?

For RH 6.1, I'm guessing you're having problems when it tries to compile/link the Oracle code. This is because Oracle needs a different set of libraries that do not exist on RH 6.1 (glibc). There are RPM's that you need to install on RH 6.1 to get the compile/links to work (About 6 of them). To find these RPM's go to the page where you would download the Oracle Server for Linux. There is a README file for Oracle on RH 6.1 (And other Linux distributions as well). I think this will help.
I currently have Oracle 8.0.5 on RH 6.1 and am having no problems. However, I was running RH 5.2, and then upgraded to 6.1. Therefor I didn't have to deal with the install problems.

  • Oracle 8.1.6  on Mandrake 8.2

Could Anyone tell me the steps to install Oracle 8.1.6 on Mandrake 8.2?
    Issues as:
    - how is the best amount of swap?
    - how is the best amount of disk?
    - disk partitions may be created in advance of installation?
If it's not easy and you have a howto file you can send attached for [email protected]
Other question, musta Itry to install 9i r2, instead to 8i?
    Thanks in advance.

Ok, I was able to install O8i 8.1.6.1.0 just fine, but guess what you got to do? You got to turn off your num lock, go figure. If you don't turn of your num lock all buttons are frozen on the U installer.

  • Oracle 8.1.6 on Mandrake 7.2?

Has anyone been able to get the Universal Installer to work on Mandrake 7.2? It starts on my box, but then none of the buttons in the lower bar (Exit, Help, Installed products, Previous, and Next) work. It's weird, because if I click on "About Oracle Universal Installer..." or "Deinstall Products..." they work, but if I click any other buttons, nothing seems to happen.
Has anyone else had this problem?

  • Oracle 8.1.6 on Mandrake 7.1b

Has anyone successfully installed 8.1.6 on
the Mandrake 7.1 beta distro? I was running
Redhat 6.0 and had it installed, but just upgraded to the newest Mandrake and when I run the installer about 7 threads start up, and I get a grey square (splash screen?) and that is it? Any ideas, suggestions?

So I tried Mandrake 6.1 and I can't even get the install to work. The jre craps out with with some sort of dump crash, it shows the install screen briefly and then dies.
I checked other posts and tried to get my env vars correct, I also tried adding DISPLAY and xhost, but to no avail. I even tried the order of env variables but nothing doing.
7.0 uses the 2.2.14 kernel and 6.1 uses the 2.2.13 kernel
Well next choice is to try a Red Hat 6.2 install....
any ides would be interesting. This has taken me two days so far...<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
I sucessfuly installed 8.1.6 release on Mandrake 7.1. I think the variable $LD_LIBRARY_PATH is not correctly set on your system ?

  • Oracle8i Release 2 (8.1.6) on Mandrake Linux 7.1

I am trying to install Oracle8i R2 on Linux Mandrake. I've got the Oracle8i EE CD. I have followed the pre-installation steps of creating the groups, user and updating the .bash_profile file for "oracle" user with all the env. variables. After, I execute runInstaller from the CD, I get the Universal Installer Welcome screen. Mouse clicks on About Oracle and Remove Installed products work fine and show message/dialog boxes. But Mouse clicks on the Help, Exit, Installed Products AND "NEXT" button have no effect. The screen remain their without taking to the next step of installation !!!
I have to exit the Universal installer using the Closing icon on the Window (top right corner).
Also, I tried "ps -ef" on the prompt after execting runInstaller. It shows around 8-10 process running under installer. Is there any known bug/issue for installter working on Mandrake linux ?
    Any help/comments/assistance....?
    Thanks and advance.

    Hi Lloyd,
I have a HP Pavilion/733MHz/128MRAM Box with Mandrake 7.1 and Win98 dual boot setup.
you mentioned that u were able to install Mandrake and Oracle on a Compaq box. Did you try re-installing Linux and Oracle on the HP box. I havent received any reply. I will try some Linux forum to raise this question.
Do let me know if you come across any solution/workaround...
