Maniging Hard drive memory.

Hey, I've had my macbook pro for a while now, and i see that its running slower, I so i check my free space and i only have 11 gb of free space left. I was wondering how i can see what apps and files are taking up most of the space and delete them. Does anyone know like an applicationt hat does this. Thanks

You need to clarify. First RAM (random access memory) are in separate chip modules that have nothing to do with HD space. Second, the OS X operating system uses free HD space for virtual memory. To get an idea of what's happening on your machine, launch Activity Monitor and check out the System Memory. Third, to check out disk space, click on the Disk Usage tab.

  • Can I add hard drive memory to my MacBook Pro (13" with retina display)?

I know I can use an external hard drive, but is there some way to add hard drive memory (either myself or taking it to an Apple store)?

OWC does offer internal storage upgrades which, depending upon the vintage of your MBP, may or may not be applicable:

  • Hard Drive Memory Issue..

Hi, I have an external hard drive that I download movies and television shows to directly from the web. The issue is that sometimes my external hard drive doesn't register with the program I use and then the file gets downloaded to the laptop itself, though I can't access the actual files. The program Disk Inventory tells me they are in a folder called "Volumes" but I can't find that folder even if I search for it. The room is being taken up on my laptop's HD anyways.I used to download directly to my computer and transfer the file to my external HD but after I deleted the original file, there seemed to still be some memory being used, not as much as the whole file, but a few bites had gone missing. What's going on?

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter /Volumes/ as the folder's path to access those files.

  • Deleting Photos from iPhoto doesn't return hard drive memory

    Hi,
I need more room on my hard drive. I have needed to pare down my photos for awhile, so I got information on my iPhoto library which was about 40gb and had about 12,500 photos. I spent hours deleting about 2500 photos and movies last night to try to recover hard drive space. I removed them by selecting move to trash or just hitting the delete key. The photos were removed from my libraries, but no memory was recovered (none of the photos ended up in the trash). I then restarted the program and computer to see if that helped to no avail. Any idea why the hard drive space is not recovered?

To remove photos you need to me in Library view - either Photos or Events - and when you hit delete the pics will go to the iPhoto trash. Then you have to empty the iPhoto Trash (that's in the iPhoto menu).
Tapping delete from an Album only removes the pics from that Album.
iPhoto has been known to be temperamental when deleting large numbers of files. Best to empty the trash every 100 images or so.
If space is an issue, you know you can move your Library to an external HD formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Any suggestions for hard drive memory management apps

I am looking for a software tool or app that can show me an overview of my hard drive in terms of memory, which will allow me to clear up space more efficiently and target which files are taking up the most room on my hard drive.

Both just as uninvasive as they can be - OmniDiskSweeper or Grand Perspective.
Personally, I prefer OmniDiskSweeper - just don't use any of those maintenance apps.
    Good luck,

  • Hard drive & memory test results different in 2 programs??

I want to replace the right parts.  Seems like both the hard drive and some of the memory need to be replaced.
Am worried that I'll be wasting money and effort if neither fix these problems:  Been having problems with computer crashing & Kernal Panics.
Per discussions, had me try original memory, which worked fine and passed the tests I used (Memtest & Checkmate).  Then one by one tested each of the cards, Samsung (original - good) and the 2 I bought - A-Tech - Nanya (good) but Kingston crashed.
On both program tests, at different times, they have indicated that the hard drive is bad (bad blocks and/or should be replaced).  But they don't test this way every time, why?  Does good or bad memory effect the performance of the hard drive and possibly cause hard drive malfunctions?
Also, should I just buy same brand for all 16GBs?  I've been looking into Crucial and OWC but the A-Tech brand I bought does have a lifetime warranty (Kingston didn't or at least it wasn't available through the seller, Amazon).  Thanks.  Charlotte

If I were you I would start with getting all good memory installed. Bad memory can affect a disk test. And, you cannot replace the hard drive yourself. You need to have an Apple retailer work on the computer to replace a hard drive.

  • Hard drive memory missing

I have a Mac Book Pro. It has been running very slowly so been checking the amount of memory available. Get info shows 277GB being used out of 319GB. Daisy disk sofatware showing the same. In both cases though if I dig deeper into each of the sub folders, the content does not add up to more than 200GB.
How can there be such a gap? Should I defragment the drive, is this the problem?
Not the first time I have had this. Had the same issue a few months back on our iMac but then it got stolen when we were burglared so never ended up solving the issue.
    Help really appreciated.
    Frederique

    So far, so good.
As verification, go to Apple (icon)/About this Mac/More Info, and tap on Storage. Disk should show "xxGB free out of xxGB". The second number will be your full hard drive capacity. According to your post, you have 277GB of 319GB.
I don't know your model, but it looks like you have a 320GB capacity. If that's so, your drive is perfectly normal. Disk Utility indicates your drive is fine.

  • We are puzzled as to why we are having hard drive memory leakage.  Tends to shrink with usage.Should we replace the hard drive?     rive lea

According to the get info on the imac hd icon we have used 249.7 out of a possible 250 gb of hardrive.  We have deleted some file, caches, but still face the shrinkage which occurs with usage.  It may rise to 320 MB but with use fall to 10mb.  Is there anything we can do or replace the hard drive?

The 'shrinkage' is due to the system using HD space as virtual memory. That is the reason why you should always leave a good chunk of disk space available for the system to use (depending on how much RAM you have and what sort of work you're using it for, that could be anything from 5 - 20GB or more).
Nothing wrong with the drive itself, you just need to offload some stuff to an external drive to free up enough space for the system to work.

  • What happened to my Hard drive memory?

I have iMac,24", early 2008, with 400GB memory. Up untill recently, about 90 GB was available out of 400. Now since the computer is slow, I was surprised to find only 20 GB is left. I can not account for loss of this memory. Is there any way to find what is taking all that memory and what can be done to recover. Thank you

You are confusing hard drive storage space with RAM (Random Access Memory).
You have 20 GBs of hard drive storage space left.
What year, screen size, CPU speed and amount of RAM installed?
How many applications do you run simultaneously in the background while working in another application?
Do you run any antivirus software on your Mac? Antivirus software can slow down the normal operation of OS X.
Do you run any "crapware" like Mackeeper or any other type of "crapware" like so called hard drive "cleaning" apps?
Hard Drive full or near full?
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Other things you can do to gain space.
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive older emails you want to save.
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its thing initially, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run all of the processes in the tabs. Let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
You may have to Purchase an external FireWire or Thunderbolt hard drive to move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be moved, also, to the external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

  • Questions... Hard Drive, Memory, etc.

    Hello!
I am hoping that someone might be able to give me some advice... I currently have an iBook G4 with these specs:
    Machine Name: iBook G4
    Machine Model: PowerBook6,7
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.5)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.42 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 142 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.3f0
    Serial Number: 4H6021ZZSE9
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
    Version: 1.0
    My issues are these...
I need a bigger hard drive! What all do I need to upgrade? There is no way that I can do this myself so I must take it somewhere to have it done.
Or... should I upgrade? If I decide to upgrade instead (educator discount and 8 gig ipod touch incentive) is it likely that I will be able to sell my iBook? It works great, no complaints and still has roughly 6 months to go under the extended warranty.
And last thing... if I do sell, is there anything special I need to do for the warranty to work for the new owner????
    Many thanks in advance!
    Lyndee

    Hi Lyndee,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
You don't state what size the drive is now but I'll guess it's 80GB.
You can have a larger drive installed at any Apple Service Provider. It should cost between $200-$300 for a 160GB drive minimum.
You can also buy an external firewire drive that is bus powered (no need for a power source other than the computer). A 250GB drive is about $145. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/on-the-go
If you decide to upgrade to a newer Mac you can easily sell your iBook on eBay. The new owner could have the extended warranty transfered to them if needed. It would be best for you to erase the drive and reinstall the OS and software before selling it to protect your private files.

  • How do I find out the hard drive memory space on a 2006 MacBook?

Hey guys, so I have a MacBook that is running IOS X 10.6.8 and is a 2006. I have been wondering how to check your hard drive space since I bought it on Craigslist. I just want to verify how much space this thing has. And also, since i'm 15 i'm looking to save some moey on a new battery and was wodering if anyone can guide me through buying a new one on eBay. Thanks!!

To see how much room you have on your hard drive right click (Control key + Click) and select Get Info from the drop down menu.and check Available.
If you have an Early 2006 White or Black plastic MacBook with the removable battery you can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay. Every MacBook from 2006 through Mid 2009 except the Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody use the same battery.
