Manual control over word processing page size.

Please help. I cannot find any tool or option that allows me to to create a word document wider than 8.5 inches. I want to create an envelope that is 9.5" x 4.125". What do I need to do? Thanks.

Hi more,
You should give some thought to changing that user name—this forum, and the entire discussions area is a place for solving problems, not an are in which to rant.
Page size (or 'Paper size') is set in Page Setup, found in the File menu. The sizes offered depend on your printer driver.
If Custom Size is among the options, you'll be able to set a size to match your envelope.
If not, and there's no listed size that's a close match, you could use US Letter, but change the page orientation from Portrait to Landscape. Then go to Format > Document and set the margins to allow printing only in the space that the envelope will occupy, and to place that space as close to the top and left as possible. Try these settings:
Top: 0.1
Bottom: 4.5
Left: 0.1
Right: 1.5
Adjustments will be required if your printer objects to the small margins (top and left).

Barry

  • Savining my Appleworks word processing pages to PDF

When I save a word processing page (done in Appleworks), to the PDF format, the file is multiplied hugely in size. Is this normal? Office Depot has trouble opening them to print my books. Will using the "compress PDF" interfere with the files in any manner? Will it damage the photos?

    Barbara,
I have never used the compressed version, but the increase in size of the file is often a common occurrence of the PDF generator that Apple has used. This was more prevelent in Panther (10.3) than in Tiger (10.4). The PDF generator in Tiger much improved over earlier versions. The only reason I would see that Office Depot has trouble reading your PDF is if you did not check the box to attach the extension.pdf to the file. Adding the extension to the file enables Windows users to double click to open it. The files will always open if the application is opened first and then the document is opened within the application.
If you purchase the full version of Adobe Acrobat, you can that applications PDF generator and then the files are much smaller than the word document. Since Adobe makes the reader software, their PDF generators are much better, produce higher quality results, most importantly, and are able to have the PDF significantly less in size without losing any of the features or quality.
    Good Luck

  • Switching b/w Word Processing & Page Layout

Is there a way to transfer from a doc in WP-mode to Page Layout mode?
Sorry for this very obvious question, but I can seem to find any info in the documentation or on the forum. Any help is, of course, massively appreciated.
    Cheers!

    UConn,
I'll use the same metaphor I used in another thread. Templates are like tablecloths. So when you set the table, then decide you want to change the tablecloth, you can't easily just switch over to another one. You have to remove the objects, then start over.
Whether you're in Word Processing or Page Layout mode is determined by which template you chose when you started up Pages. You can't just switch to another mode, because it's a separate template. But I've found that the major difference between the two modes is that the WP mode has a text layer, while the PL mode doesn't. If you began in the WP mode, you can just click on the page and begin typing; you can't do that in the PL mode. You have to create a text box or other object in order to place text.
    Hope this helps.

  • Version control for word processing

    Hi, all.
I've never used any kind of version control system (like git or cvs or anything), but know I think that I have a use for one.
Basically, my point is that I write documents mostly in markdown/xhtml (perhaps I'll start using LaTeX one day, but that's another story), so I only use a text editor and not a word processor. So I think that a simple revision control solution would provide me with a feature that many word processors have: the ability to track all changes and revert to any past state of the document.
So what would you suggest? Something simple, lightweight and smart. I'm not gonna use it for coding, or even publish it anywhere, so my requirements are rather humble.

The only problem with using a version control system with a text editor is that you have to either set it up to commit automatically on every save and every few minutes.  Word processors especially docs.google.com are very good about saving revisions for you.
So look at the DVCS list here and pick one (mercurial, git, and bazaar are the more popular ones) and think of a good system for auto-committing.  The day you realize you forgot to commit a version before a major change you will kick yourself for not having a good system in place.

  • Control over Source/Comments field size on Allergens Sensitivities and Additives

Is there a way for use to expand out the field size of the Source/Comments field in each of these sections??
    thanks,
    David

    Hi David,
You can expand out the field size or the text size by below steps:
1, go to \Web\gsm\BaseForms\UserControls\ctlComplianceContainedGrid.ascx, open the file
    2, go to line 102 :  <wcc:DatatableColumn ID="SourceText" Key="SourceText" TranslationID="lblSourceOccuring" Formatter="helper.getTextFormatter()" Editor="Oracle.PlmProcess.Ui.Datatable.CellRepresentation.getTextareaCellEditor(125)"  Parser="string" width="<%# IIF (IsInEditMode(), 478, 502)%>" runat="server"  />
3, change theCellRepresentation.getTextareaCellEditor or the width of the field, save the file, refresh your open page or create a new page, then this field will change to the newly configured size
Notes: the maxinum text supported is 4000 character
    hope this helps.
    Thanks,
    Jessie

  • I've Lost Control over my Home Page(s)

    Greetings Team Firefox,
I've just upgraded to Firefox 12.0, and I have a problem that I could use some help with. I can't change my home page(s). For some reason, Firefox insists on using my current home pages, which happen to be 6 different web pages. Firefox won't change to the default, a single web site, a blank page, or anything else.
    I'm running Windows 7 X64 on a laptop.
If anybody has any suggestions, I would certainly appreciate them. Thanks much.

    Hello madperson,
I had a look at the user.js file, and found it was clobbered. The first character in the first line was an illegal character, and notebook choked on it (notebook would not open the .js file). I deleted user.js, and Voila! I'm back in business. Thanks much for your immediate response and excellent advice.

  • Any control over page size when outputting PDF files?

Is there any way to control page size in the Book creation section (currently 8.5 x 11) or to control the final output page size when printing to PDF? I'd like to create some 10x10 pages (so I can print 10x10 photos) using the excellent Aperture book/album layout features.

It looks like this has been discussed in previous posts... I did find a nice workaround though which allows us to make pages with usable dimensions for going to photo printing...other than the 8.5x11 offered by aperture .

  • Page size

I am trying to convert a file in word file in A4 format to PDF with Acrobat.com.
I noticed that the resulting PDF file is produced in Legal page size.
Is there a way to change the PDF page size to A4?
Thanks all for your help, Simon

    H Michelle
Had a phone call from a friend only today on that issue. He created a PageMaker document in A5 and it prints via Acrobat 7 (Distiller) to the default A4. Having used Acrobat since vers 2 I am familiar with Distiller Joboptions and sent him one for A5. Using InDesign this is not an issue since ID can pass the document size to Distiller.
It is an issue with Word 2007 where the Acrobat plugin prints to the default A4 regardless of the document size, unless the default Distiller joboption is changed. Ironically, given the attitude ot MS to PDF over the years, I was surprised to find that the MS Save-to-pdf extensions does in fact honour the Word document page size.
I presume the Acrobat.com conversion to PDF doesn't use the normal Distiller (a server-based converter?) but for non-US folk this behaviour reminds us oldies of the frustrating time when much software was limited to US Letter output. I was surprised that the output Simon reported  was Legal rather than US Letter. Re-frying the PDF could fix the page size but in the process I doubt the original margins would be preserved. Printing US Letter PDFs to A4 and the converse usually requires the printer dialog setting Fit to printable margins and this will affect scaling and aspect ratios a little.
Hence I'm glad you will look at the problem  though I don't personally need the PDF conversion facility.

  • Where are custom PDF page sizes stored?

I built a new computer due to a failing hard drive and I want to copy over several custom page sizes that I created. It took a while to get these to mesh properly with Autocad and I don't want to have to make them all over again if possible. Are these stored somewhere in one master file or as individual files that I can simply copy over to the new computer? Thanks.

    Hi Rhinny2012,
The custom PDF page sizes are stored in the Windows Registry at "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Forms"

  • How do I shrink a MS doc to a smaller page size, not just divide the document into a smaller size?

I am trying to shrink a microsoft word document from a standard page to a smaller, possibly half page, to create a printable reference booklet I plan on laminating but when I try to change the page to a different size, it doesn't shrink the document to that size, it just breaks that page into a bunch of smaller pages, breaking up whatever chart or words were on the page. Any insight?
Ex. I have a chart that looks like this on a standard letter size MS word doc page layout.
    Header 1
    Header 2
    Header 3
    Header 4
I want to change this so that is it on a landscape "half letter" MS word doc page size, shrinking the chart, and keeping it in tact.
When I change the page layout size, or try to copy paste to the above mentioned half letter doc size, the chart breaks up into multiple pieces, creating 3 or 4 "half letter" sizes, with only part of the chart on each.
    Help MUCH appreciated!

You'll need to create a custom page size under "Page setup..." in Word. Word really isn't the best application for what you're trying to do, but a custom page size with custom margins should work.
EDIT: Oh, and you'll need to change the sizes on your table, obviously.

  • Change Page Size Equally

I'm working on a book that is 130 pages. It needs to print regualry (offset) and also needs to print digitally at a slightly reduced size -- original size is 6.5 x 9.25 in. The digital size will be 6.125 x 9.25. I know how to change a page size, but when I change the width the reduced size comes off the outside of each page (book is setup with facing pages). The client wants each page to remain exactly as is in the original book size (just with copy and images centered on the new page size) so I can't use Layout adjustment. Is there any way to control the reduction of page size so that the change in width comes off both sides of the page (which would save me the time of having to recenter everything)?
Any suggestions appreciated (File is in CS5)
    Jeff

Without checking, these three simple options come to mind:
Change the document from facing pages and make the width change, change back to facing -
Export to pdf and crop the pages in Acrobat -
Create a second document and place the original 130 ID pages into that, offset -.125.
I would use the third option as it would always reflect the live changes to the original.
    http://indesignsecrets.com/downloads/MultiPageImporter2.5-CS5.zip
Places the whole 130 page ID file into a new file.

  • Change Printer Default Page size to A4 from Letter in Firefox

Firefox overides printer default page size every time I print. I need Firefox to print to A4 but it automatically sets the Page size to Letter. I have to manualy change the size each time I print.
There are no options in Firefox to change this setting permanently. I am running the latest version of Firefox on Windows XP.
In control panel the default page size is set to A4 which Internet Explorer and other applications use correctly.
    Thanks,

I solved it! For anyone having a similar problem try this.
Change the default printer, choose another one.
Change something in that printer and close firefox.
Reopen firefox and choose yet another printer (not the first one).
Change something in that printer and close firefox again.
Reopen firefox and choose the first printer. Select A4 as default paper and close firefox one last time.
Reopen firefox and the problem should be gone. Weird, innit?

  • Generating html from word processing document

I've got a fairly short two-column newsletter with six graphics that I want to publish in html using AW v6.2. I select save as html but the resulting document includes none of my text or graphics, hmmm. So I look at the web templates starting points and export these templates as html and get the same result - headers but no content. TIA!

If you are expecting to get a page of HTML that will look exactly like your word processing page, that is not going to happen. ThisUser Tip tells you probably more than you want to know about creating HTML in Appleworks, but I would strongly suggest not doing this in Appleworks. If you don't have a regular web program, download the free NVU (nvu.org) and use that instead.
BTW, the "web templates" in Appleworks are not templates for web pages, but rather regular appleworks document templates that are hosted on a web server for download.

  • When I copy and paste a chapter from MS Word into Pages my tables and equations are trashed.  But importing them results in no control over my template How do I get my chapter into my template without copying

When I copy and paste a chapter from MS Word into Pages my tables and equations are trashed.  But importing them results in no control over my template How do I get my chapter into my template without copying?

Try just Opening the Word .doc from within Pages and see if that gets closer to what you want, then copy the chapter you want from the Pages version.

  • Combining word processing and page layout templates

Does anyone know how to (or if it's possible at all) merge or combine a Pages 09 document set up on the "Pages Layout" template with one set up on "Word Processing" template properly? Can these two templates "talk to each other"?
I'm trying to combine some of my separate class notes for my students into one file, and some were created in Page Layout, with visuals, charts, pics, etc. I also have some Word Document notes that I'd like to merge with the other notes to create one "class notes" file for my students. But I can't seem to do that, for some reason. I can copy individual pages from the Page Layout notes and paste them into my Word Document notes, but they paste as two pages (one page is blank). When I delete that page, the other one is deleted, too. I can't copy and paste from the other direction (word doc to page layout) at all, and like I said, the other way is a little off, as well.
Any ideas, or is this just not possible in Pages 09? Thanks.

    Re: Jerry
I'd like to stay in one or the other, but I just like features that are only in one or the other. For example, I like in WP mode that when I get to the end of a page of writing and keep going, a new page appears (with formatting and layout intact on the next). If I'm in PL mode and writing in a text box, it just goes beyond the viewable screen. I also like the ability to select and move around individual pages in PL mode, and that doesn't seem to be available in WP mode (they're all stuck together and move in clumps). But you're right, I'm just going to have to stick with one and figure out some workarounds for some things I like. Since I think I'll be more in WP mode, I'll try to move stuff over from PL.
    Re: Peter
Thanks for the advice... it's already helped me try to come up with some ways to fix things. The whole click away thing to give me floating objects has been great! You're right, this does seem like a design flaw, but I suppose Apple can't be all things to all people. Still, I'd like a little more...
    Re: Yvan
Hang in there! You're right, Pages is tough when trying to use created projects in other apps! Like you said, I'm working to rebuild the layout. By the way, my PL document was 16 pages, which when transferred to WP mode doubled in size! Sheesh...
Thanks to all—I think I'm going to be able to work through this "issue" after all. I appreciate everyone's help.
