Manual Keyboard Backlight Adjustment

Hellooooo
How can I manually adjust the keyboard backlight on my Spectre 13t Ultrabook?
It seems like there's only a switch to turn it on and off, with no adjustments in between, other than the automatic adjustment from thr sensor.
Thank youu,
Jimmy

Hi,
You can use the FN key +   (key with this symbol) on it to change the backlight settings.

  • The keyboard backlight is on all the time. I can only adjust it by manual. What can I do? (I checked the illumination box)

The keyboard backlight is bright even under the sunshine.
Is this a problem? Need I to take the computer back to the apple store? (Macbook Pro 2011: Mac OS X, Version 10.6.7; 2.3 GHz Intel Core i4; 4GB 1333MHz DDR3)

Did you check the F5 and F6 keys to make sure your backlighting is not set to the max? I would set it at half and see if the auto backlighting is working. You can also check it by covering the iSight webcam and a few cm to the left which is where the baklighting sensor is. Give that a try.

  • Keyboard backlighting - manually turning it on

Is there a way (short of putting a piece of tape over the camera) to manually turn the keyboard backlighting on? I'm regularly finding that the machine's idea of how dim the ambient light needs to be is different from mine - increasingly so as my eyes get older
    thanks...Bob

That did the trick! Too bad this kind of control is not built into the machine as it comes from Apple.
    Thanks...Bob

  • Circle with diagonal line when trying to adjust keyboard backlight

I have ever since I bought my Early "11 MBP 15" been able to use keyboard backlight in any ambient light conditions, at full or no strenght. However as I tried to clean up something I spilled on the keyboard, a magic key combination rendered the function keys for keyboard backlight useless. Instead I get the circle with a diagonal dash through it. In preferences keyboard backlight is set to on... Please help!

Oh I get it... It's supposed to be off if enough ambient light is around. Guess that makes sense... Covering the light sensor next to the iSight camera dimmed the screen and keyboard light came on!

  • How do you turn keyboard backlight off in silverlight?

    HI,
My settings are for the backlight on my keyboard to go off after 30 seconds of non-use but when I watch films using silverlight, the light won't go off. I have contacted Lovefilm and they gave me instructions for uninstalling then reinstalling but it still won't switch off. Any ideas? It's getting on my nerves big time. Thanks

    Hi esther40,
If your keyboard backlight isn't dimming on no activity when using Silverlight, you may want to try manually adjusting the backlight in those cases using the F5 and F6 keys. You may find the following article helpful:

  • HT1115 i cannot turn on my keyboard backlight

My keyboard backlight will not turn on, whenever i try to adjust it to brighten or dim the backglight setting i get the brighten symbol with a small circle with a line through it. I am not sure what to do. I have tried ever combination of settings regarding the keyboard settings and have yet to turn them on.

    Thanks, Reed.
I realize that this is a VERY old topic, but had to comment, because others might stumble upon it.
You inadvertantly solved my problem. For some time, I have had no backlight on my MacBook Pro 2012 model. I spent time reading Help files and searching through forums, bu tnobody else that I found has mentioned the brighten symbol with the small circle and a line going through it.
When I read that, it caused me to notice the F5 and F6 keys alternate function symbol, whose purpose I had never spotted in more than 6 years of owning MBP's. I'd used them during daylight, and didn't see what they did. Apple probably mention  them in their Help files somewhere, but I've never seen that.
If Apple could put a simple 'Use the F5 and F6 keys to adjust keyboard backlighting brightness manually' into the first Help file which is produced when people search for 'adjust keyboard backlight', tne it would save people like me hours of frustration.
    Thanks again.

  • Inconsistent Keyboard backlight...

I don't know if this is normal or not... since this is the first Mac I have ever owned. But the keyboard backlight of my MBP keeps turning itself on and off... as I write this message, the keyboard backlight is on for 10 secs... then off for 5 secs... then on again... then off again...
    what's going on...?? any ideas...?

This is probably because you've enabled your mac for auto light level detection. There are two sensors in your Mac (under the speaker grills) which detect ambient light levels in the room, and then automatically adjust the keyboard and screen lighting.
If the light is changing alot in the room, the inconsistency can become rather tiresome. Try turning off this feature in your preferences.
    From the Apple Manual:
    Adjusting Your Display
Your MacBook Pro is equipped with an ambient light sensing (ALS) system (located under the speaker grille) that automatically adjusts the brightness of the display
according to the available light. After you begin working with your new MacBook Pro, you might need to adjust your display so that the screen is easier to see. Use the F1
and F2 keys labeled with the brightness (¤) icon to adjust screen brightness.
To turn off the automatic display brightness feature:
m Choose Apple ( ) > System Preferences from the menu bar. Open the Displays pane and deselect the “Automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes”checkbox.
There are two options for your display that can optimize your battery life. You can find these options in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences
    Golan.

  • Keyboard backlight doesn't turn on auto in dark

hi i bought macbook pro retina 13(osx mavericks) few days back i observed that my keyboard backlight doesn't turn on auto in dark i have to manually turn it on every time so i want to know whether apple has removed this auto turn on in new mavericks or is i m having a issue with my keyboard

Auto keyboard backlight still exists: System Preferences -> Keyboard -> "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light". Is that option selected? If so, deselect and select it again. If that doesn't work: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • Keyboard Backlight Dies on Lowest Setting

My keyboard backlight acts funky. I like to keep the backlight on low settings since I think even half of maximum illumination is too bright. Many times when it is on the lowest settings it does one of two things.
    1. It will turn off after a brief period of time although I have set the keyboard backlight to never idle out. (could this be a power/hardware issue?)
    2. Or it will turn itself from 1 to 3 bars. Often when it does this I'll notice that tapping the keyboard backlight brightness increase once will cause a jump from 0 bars to 3.
Is anyone else noticing this problem? What setting do you like your keyboard backlight at? I've heard many forums talking about the ambient light sensors issues related to the keyboard backlight but never this specific issue. Maybe I have a faulty keyboard.
Resetting the PRAM seems to help a little and I've also deleted the preference file bezelservices.plist which seemed to help with the lowest setting consistency. The problem however, is back.

It does seem to auto-adjust, possibly as part of the energy saver settings.
You can manually override the OS control of the keyboard backlight with LabTick:

    Hope this helps...

  • Macbook keyboard backlight auto turn-on when room is dark?

I have a late 2013 13" Retina Macbook Pro (running Mavericks) and am a relatively new OSX user. I know that I can modify keyboard backlight settings and have the brightness level adjust automatically (similar to how the screen brightness adjusts) however I don't actually want the keyboard's backlight on when the room is light. The fact that the auto-adjust setting makes the keyboard brighter in a light room is annoying to me.
Is there any way to have the backlight automatically turn on ONLY when the room is BELOW a certain brightness threshold. Perhaps there is a 3rd party app that can add this functionality? Manually pressing F5 and F6 works fine, but ideally I'd like to have this automated somehow.
    Thanks!

Billy_budd,   Unfortunately it's not even that things are finicky for me. I haven't experienced any auto-turnon functionality at all. Are you running Mavericks? I've seen some older posts referring to this being a possibility. Is there a specific way you've enabled this option? I don't see anything in my settings.
If I select the tickbox I've highlighted in the screenshot below, the brightness of the keyboard mimicks the auto-audjust behaviour of the screen's backlight. With it unchecked, I have to use F5 or F6 to see any keyboard brightness changes. I haven't experienced the keyboard automatically turning on when the lights turn off.

  • MacBook Pro keyboard backlight not switching off

I recently bought a 13" MacBook Pro (2012, 2.9GHz i7) and it came with Mountain Lion preinstalled. The keyboard backlight isn't behaving as I had expected: when the "Adjust keyboard brightness in low light" option is checked, it does indeed adjust the brightness of the backlight when ambient light levels change. However even when the ambient light is VERY bright (desk lamp shining down) the backlight doesn't switch off; instead it just goes to full brightness. I understand that the backlight usually dims in dark conditions to save battery, but why would it go bright when the keyboard is fully visible without a backlight? Is there a way to make the keyboard backlight go off when there is plenty of background light and come on when the environment is dark?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Auto brightness operation usually works in the way yours is working.  It is dimmer in very low light and progressively gets brighter as the ambient light increases.  There are cases where this is actually helpful as in wierd backlighting situations.
You can override in the System Settings and from the keyboard "function" keys.  I'm not at my MBP right now, but I think the keyboard backlighting controls are somewhere near F5 and F6.

  • MacBook Pro Mid 2010 13", Lion 10.7.2, keyboard backlight / ALS not working

Since upgrading to Mac OS X Lion I have had problems with keyboard backlight and the ambient light sensor. I realized that the problem seems to be caused by ambient light sensor or hardware detection issues. LCD is not auto-dimming with light intensity variation. Since then I've done a Snow Leopard clean install and upgraded to Lion with no success. Then I have done clean installs of Lion using USB Keys with versions 10.7.0, 10.7.1 and 10.7.2 and the problem persists. Under Snow Leopard everything works like a charm.
SMC and PRAM reset did not solve the problem.
When I press F5 and F6 to adjust the backlight nothing comes up on the screen.
    No settings under Keyboard menu.
Any ideas on how to solve this?

    Max,
I have the same model MacBook Pro as you. Have you tried erasing your internal disk, reïnstalling Snow Leopard from your grey Mac OS X Install DVD, and running Software Update to get it  to 10.6.8, to see if it also misbehaves under Snow Leopard?

  • Problem with Macbook Pro early 2011, webcam not working in any apps and windows 7 or 8 on bootcamp, keyboard backlight not working?

    Hi Guys
I recently bought a second hand early 2011 Macbook Pro 15 inch and are having 2 problems. The first is that none of the apps detects my webcam at all, the second is, i have Windows 8 installed on bootcamp but are unable to get the keyboard backlight to work in 7 or 8. The backlight works perfect in os x 10.8.5 though. I need a little bit of help guys.....

Go to Apple Menu / About This Mac. Click on More Info ... next on System Report. In the left hand column, under Hardware, select USB. The right side will show the USB Device Tree. Look through that and check for "Built-in iSight". That is your camera. If it is not listed the camera is not working.
For backlighting, try this: go to System Preferences / Keyboard. Uncheck "Adjust keyboard lighting in low light".

  • Keyboard backlight not working correctly after leopard update

My mbp originally came with Tiger (10.4), when Leopard (10.5) was released I updated. The backlight for the keyboard works normally until I installed the 10.5.1 update. After 10.5.1 and all other updates the keyboard backlight no longer worked correctly. In low light conditions or while working in the dark I have to manually turn it on instead of it doing it automatically. Is this a bug or is there a way to fix it?

Yes, I have to cover the sensors with my hands in order for them to turn off when light is back on, otherwise they just stay on.

  • Keyboard Backlight not working anymore.....please help.

After installing Boot Camp 2.1, I can't get the keyboard backlight to work anymore. I am in the darkest of dark rooms. Pressing F8 just shows an attempt to turn it on but it has a circle with a line through it.
    I am running Windows Vista 32-bit SP1.
Are there drivers I can install manually?
    Thanks.

Here is something funny. I rebooted with the room completely dark. When Windows came back, the keyboard was backlit. But, when I turned the lights on, the keyboard stayed backlit. And, even better (or worse), when I rebooted again, the keyboard just stayed backlit even to the point where I was choosing between booting into OS X or Windows. That is crazy! I don't know what is going on anymore.
