Manual Migration vs. Migration Assistant

I am finally going to upgrade my Mac Pro to Mavericks. It is currently running SL 10.6.8. I will definitely perform a clean install and then reinstall all applications manually. But I can't decide if I should use the Migration Assistant to move my data over or if I should do it all manually.
Reason for a completely manual migration:
A clean start. My system currently contains over a decade's worth of clutter. My user library folder is several hundred GB in size and I have no idea what most of the stuff in there is. It's a mess and it doesn't feel right.
Reason for using migration assistant:
It basically guarantees that nothing important is forgotten and - more importantly - it automatically takes care of stuff that can be very troublesome to transfer manually, like Mail data for example. The Migration Assistant seems safer in this regard than a completely manual migration.
What do you think?

I would use neither of those, and use Setup Assistant instead. Setup Assistant is available right after you boot up from your newly upgraded system; it asks you if you want to transfer your data over. Answer yes. It will be quick and easy. Answering no and attempting to do it later, whether by Migration Assistant or by manual copying, is usually a mistake in my experience.

    Hi Prasad S,
Based on your description, I understand you want to migrate a standalone printer server to a clustered print server. However, the Spool can’t be loaded. Would you please
let me know whether use resource kit utilities (such as Print Migrator tool) to help you automate the migration or migrate manually?
Please refer to the following KB and check if can help you.

  • Can I move my Mac from one house to another while its migrating in migration assistant or does it have to stay close to PC?

My Mac is getting files from my PC using migration Assistant and I am about to go to my friends house & was wondering could I take my Mac with me or does it have to stay in the same house as my PC while its migrating?

Your new Mac will need to remain on its original network, until the migration is completed.

  • How to migrate when Migration Assistant isn't helping

I'm helping a friend move from her old MacBook (OS X 10.4.11) to a new MacBook Air (OS X 10.7.1). Her home directory on the MacBook is Filevault-protected.
The first thing that I tried was using Migration Assistant to migrate via wi-fi. However, the two machines just stall at the "searching for other computers" stage. Neither computer is ever able to see the other (I had a similar experience migrating a Snow Leopard MacBook Pro to a newer machine, making me think that wireless migration just doesn't work).
I tried on a non-Apple wireless network, and on a network using an Airport Express. I also tried having the Air create an ad hoc network, and connecting the MacBook to that. In all cases, Migration Assistant on the Air was not able to detect the Macbook and just stayed at "searching for other computers" indefinitely.
The Air doesn't have a Firewire port, so a Firewire connection is not an option. I believe that it's not possible to connect two machines using USB and have Migration Assistant work over the USB connection.
I don't have the USB-to-Ethernet adaptor, so Ethernet isn't an option. The MacBook is running OS X 10.4.11, so making a TimeMachine backup is not an option.
I used Carbon Copy Cloner to create a disk image of the MacBook's disk on an external drive, in the hope that Migration Assistant could import from that. However, Migration Assistant on the Air won't migrate user data from a Filevault-protected home directory.
It looks to me as if the best route is for me to remove Filevault protection from her home directory, image the disk to the external drive, and then migrate from that image.
However, my understanding is that disabling Filevault protection requires free space on the hard drive equal to the size of the protected user home directory (at least temporarily). There simply isn't that much space available.
Is there a way that I can duplicate the user's home directory to the external drive, removing FileVault encryption as I go? Or can I clone the user's home to the external drive, and then strip FileVault from the copy there?
Any suggestions or tips would be gratefully received.

Also, I want to add that in the accounts section I DO NOT see two accounts there. I have been reading the forums and some suggested that after using MA it creates another user profile and all the files should be there. However, I do not see another profile. Also, I think it is strange that it took less than 1 minute to transfer my files! Help!

  • Mail did not migrate using migration assistant

I just used migration assistant to transfer all data ans settings from my old MBA to my new MBP Retina. Everything seemed to have transferred well except for Mail.  I have no accounts in Mail and need to set up every mailbox all over again.  Did something go wrong? How do I transfer my mailboxes to my new machine without having to set everything up again?  Both machines are on Mavericks.
    Thanks!

    I had the same issue.
    1.  Quit Mail (if it's running) on new mac if it's running.
    2.  Go to your /[username]/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
    3.  Rename file "Container.plist"" to "Container.plist.old" (confirm when asked about extension)
    4.  Launch mail.
If it works, yay!  If not - then revert steps above.

  • Migrating without Migration Assistant

I installed something or some program that kept causing shutdowns of my iMac. Archive & reinstall couldn't fix it. And since I'm no pro at reading Console logs I couldn't figure out what it was. So I decided it was about time I did a full reinstall of 10.5 anyway. Thought it might speed things up to not have all that program clutter.
So, are there any guides out there on how to migrate without the migration assistant? That way I can possibly keep my iTunes Library files without having to re-rate and organize everything? How about Mail and Stickies and iPhoto? Is it as simple as moving the old files to the same place they were in?
I'm afraid using the Migration assistant on anything might bring over whatever was troubling me.

I used the migration assistant and unchecked the applications. The transfer went smoothly enough but my horrid restart problems have begun again! See my other post http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1950807&tstart=0
I can only imagine that this means the root of this problem was not in my applications but in my preferences or network settings?
    HELP!

  • Partially complete PC to MAC migration using Migration Assistant

I recently attempted to migrate data from my windows laptop to a new MacBook using Migration Assistant.  When the process started, Migration Assistant estimated approx 30GB for the new data.  I aborted the transfer after 24+ hours, but the hard drive shows less space available as if the process completed.  Is there some migrated data now on the MacBook?  If so, where is that data stored?  Can I delete it since the Migration Assistant hung, and how would I do that?
    Thanks.

When you use Migration Assistant it creates another user account, please log out of your current account (click teh Apple Symbol in the upper left of the display and choose log out.) You should see another user account which is where your PC files are located. If you still cannot find them then call AppleCare, you have 90 days of free AppleCare telephone support. This may be the perfect time to use it. Also if you have not already purchased AppleCare I would VERY STRONGLY recommend that you do.

  • Can Mac Mail nicknames be migrated with Migration assistant?

I have a user that moved from a computer running 10.8 to another running 10.8 using Migration Assistant.  The only issue she had was with her Mac Mail.  Her local folders and contacts transferred, but nicknames associated with those contacts did not.  So, when she types in, for example, her daughter's name, it no longer populates the address field with her email address.  Is there a way to recreate those nicknames?  Thanks!

I think this is because of Mail menu > Window > Previous Recipients. The next time, it probably will save it and populate the address filed in next email she sends. You could try a copy paste from her old system but I'm not sure and can't test that right now.

  • Migration problem: migration assistant won't migrate both user accounts from time machine backup

My Mac was formatted due to some technical issues. Before handing to the lab- I backed it up using time machine ( and only that ).
I had two user accounts on the Mac before handing it to the lab.
One of them I never actually used -I'll call it the secondary.
The second one was the main one - which I used  all the time - the principal account. All my data is there on that account.
The Mac was formatted at the lab.
Using the setup assistant I migrated one user from the Time Machine Backup.
Only later I realized it was actually the account I never used.
Since I never used it - I couldn't remember the login password and had to reset it, took a while.
I then tried to to migrate the principal account - the one I actually wanted to migrate, in the fist place, during the setup procedure -  using the migration assistant.
At the relevant window I tick the principal account- the mac does some thinking and then in the login window my only options are the secondary account and guest account, the principal account is not to be seen.
I'm really really stressed and worried.
BTW -when looking into the actual external disk used for the Time Machine at this path: computer name--> backups-->macintosh HD -->users--> principal account - I see all the folders and files with a 'no entry' icon next to them.
clicking on the folders - I get the following notice - 'the folder xxx can't be opened because you don't have permission to see the contents''
    What's going on?
    I'm running on a 2.9Ghz intel core i5
    16GB RAM 1600MHz DDR3
    SW version: 10.9.4
would appreciate any kind of help,
    Thanks
    Dana

    thanks,
the thing is the Mac was behaving strangely - that's why I sent it to the lab in the first place.
This Mac is just over a year old but it's content was initially migrated from the older mac.
And it (the new Mac) wasn't working properly from the get go..
It took ages for it to start up and wouldn't start up if any external disk was attached (via USB).
I had to start it up and only then connect external disks.
In the lab - They couldn't find and HW issues.
So they formatted and reinstalled the OS - I think that's all they've sone in the lab
The idea was to start afresh and slowly reinstall softwares - only those necessary.
So, having said all that- does that change your answer?

  • Access 2003 to oracle 9i Migration(Oracle Migration Workbench)

    Hi Experts,
I have taken up a project to migrate Access 2003 application to Oracle 9i.The Forms and Reports will continue to run in Access 2003 with Oracle 9i database. I decide to use Oracle Migration workbench for the migration purpose. What I think is the back-end i.e. database and queries will be automatically migrated to Oracle 9i but I'm not sure about the front end application.
Do I need to change front end application to point to database in Oracle 9i or OMW will do that itself.I am also confused with lots of queries that reside in current Access database. I presume these queries will be converted to Oracle procedure without any manual intervention but will the front-end application also be modified automatically to point to those stored procedures.Otherwise an extensive code change will be required which may result in huge cost.
So, could anyone help me in this issue by giving some ideas so I can manage the job efficiently.
    Thanks & Regards
    S C

The Migration Workbench will modify the Access mdb file as part of the migration if you request it, to create the necessary link tables to oracle, it will use an ODBC DSN to do this. This is explained in our documentation. This should be transparent.
However for complex application, you often have a tuning exercise, to ensure that the jet engine does the "right" thing, and there changes are required, e.g. a two way join, you would want that to happen on the server and not done on the client. This would be same tuning exercise, if the back end was SQL Server.
In the latest release of the Access plugin, we did a better job migrating queries to views, but you need to plug this into your code.
Yes, the exporter should extract the information about the linked table, assuming the link is valid at the time of extraction.

  • Migration/Live Migration fails with shared storage (SMB), but not all the time

I have 2 Hyper-V Hosts using shared storage via SMB. I'm having intermittent issues with migrations failing. It'll either go through the motions of doing the whole move and fail and/or when I try to start it again I get the following:
I've done a lot of reading on this and have done various things that have been recommended. For each Hyper-V host I've setup delagation via Kerberos. ie. HV_Host1 has CIFS - HV_Host2; CIFS - SMB Server; MS Virtual System Migration Service - HV_Host2 and
    vice versa.
On the actual SMB share on the Shared Storage server I added permissions to the folder for HV_Host1, HV_Host2, Storage Server, Domain Admins and my user account for full access.
In Group Policy, I've blocked Inheritance for the OU containing the Hyper-V hosts, though I have added some of the Group Policy's manually that I needed.
Last thing, I also added Domain Admins to the Local GP on each Host for "Log on as a Service" and "Impersonate a client after authentication" as shown in this thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/windowsserver/en-US/7e6b9b1b-e5b1-4e9e-a1f3-2ce72ea1e543/unable-to-migrate-create-vm-hyperv-cluster-2012-logon-failure-have-to-restart-the-hyperv
I get these failed migrations regardless if I start them on the actual Host or via the admin console from Win8.
At this point I'm not sure what else to check or the next step to take for this.

    Hi Granite,
Please refer to following article to build hyper-v over SMB :

  • SQL Developer Migration Workbench - Migrate only one Database?

    Hallo!
We want to use Oracle SQL Developer Migration Workbench Early Adopter for migrate some Databases from SQL 2000 to Oracle 10g R2 (on XP SP2 SQL Developer 1.1.2.25.79).
The first Database we can migrate to Oracle. The Loader files in OMW are better!
On next day the menu capture schema was not reachable ( gray) . What can we do?
    Thanks.
    Michael

    Michael,
<p>Have you seen the Getting Started guide? It looks like you have just started and not taken the next step. Once you are connected to your repository, select the SQL Server connection and use the "Capture..." option in the context menu for that connection.

  • E-Business Suite R12.1 on Exadata with Database Rel 12c - Upgrade and Migrate, or Migrate and Upgrade

    Given:
    E-Business Suite R12.1 running against non-RAC database release 11gR2
    Aspiration:
E-Business Suite R12.1 running against database release 12c RAC on Exadata
In the context of Oracle best practices, what would be a preferred approach for the database tier to meet the above aspiration, i.e. (a) Upgrade database on source and then migrate to Exadata OR (b) Migrate database to Exadata and then upgrade ?
Appreciate thoughts from community members/Oracle support.
    Thanks,
    Rakesh

    Rakesh,
It is necessary to refine Srini's statement:
EBS does not need to be "certified" on Exadata.  See:
Running E-Business Suite on Exadata V2
    https://blogs.oracle.com/stevenChan/entry/e-business_suite_exadata_v2
    E-Business Suite 11i, 12.0, and 12.1 are certified with Database 12.1.0.1.
E-Business Suite 12.2 will be certified with Database 12.1.0.1 soon.

  • Active directory migration , profile migration using admt

    Hi,
I have request to migrate the users using admt tool, where profile avg size is 100 mb. how much approx time it should take..  considering below
    1. if profile is local or roaming , does it make any difference in time taken
    2. size of profile is 10 mb and 100 mb, should i assume assume it should take 10 time more time?
    3. what are the other parameters can affect time taken for migration
    thanks

I think what you need to use is User State Migration Toolkit (USMT), ADMT is used for migration of domain accounts and from the way I am reading this it sounds like you are trying to migrate profiles on a desktop.

  • Manually starting Database Configuration Assistant

I have installed Oracle 9i on Solaris 8 and it stopped with an "Out of Memory" error during the Starter Database creation. I think I have fixed the memory problem. Now I am trying to start the Database Configuration Assistant manually and I cannot find out how to do this so that I can continue on with the installation process from where I left off.
