Manual PSE 4 Backup & Restore

Due to limited space on the external hard drive that I use for all my PSE 4.0 files, I am not able to use the "Backup" feature in PSE 4 to do a full backup.  The hard drive space issue occurs due to the fact that Adobe says that a temporary backup copy of my catalog and photos is created on the drive that I am backing up from.  I get an Error Writing To File message.
So to get around this limitation, I have been manually copying the "My Catalog.psa" file to a 2nd external hard drive.  I then also copy the folder that contains all my photos (that are referenced in the catalog file) to the same 2nd external hard drive.
I am getting ready to migrate to a new computer with Windows 7 Pro.  Assuming that PSE 4 will not work under Win 7, I am going to buy PSE 8 and install it initially on my old computer.  I am then going to open PSE 8 and point to my working PSE4 catalog and hope that PSE 8 will convert from PSE 4 to PSE 8 format.  During that conversion process, will PSE 8 create a new catalog that will reside along with my old PSE 4 catalog?  In other words, I am hoping that my old PSE 4 catalog will remain intact in case something goes wrong and I need to access it again.
If things go bad and I somehow corrupt my original PSE 4 catalog, can I still go to my 2nd hard drive, where I keep my copy of the psa catalog file and the associated pictures file, and simply copy those back to my original PSE 4 external hard drive and be back in business with PSE 4?
A 2nd scenario might be to just load PSE 8 on the new computer and then connect my external hard drive that contains my PSE 4 working catalog and pictures.  Would PSE 8 then automatically create a new PSE 8 catalog and image file on the new computer and not destroy my PSE 4 catalog on the connected external hard drive?
Thanks for any comments.
Bob

[During that conversion process, will PSE 8 create a new catalog that will reside along with my old PSE 4 catalog?]
- Yes, PSE8 would create a new catalog and your old catalog of PSE 4 would remain intact.
[Would PSE 8 then automatically create a new PSE 8 catalog and image file on the new computer and not destroy my PSE 4 catalog on the connected external hard drive?]
Yes, when you would install PSE8, it would automatically create a default catalog for you. There wont be any loss of information for your PSE4 catalog.
Hope this address your concern.

  • How to BackUp Restore Large Library "original file could not be found"

I've searched the archives for this with no clear answer, and am reposting to avoid confusing anyone.
I am working on a manual and seamless BACKUP-RESTORE process to manage my large 100-gigabyte-plus iTunes library.
    +++++
First, my iTunes folder is in default location:
    Boot drive> User> Music
I don't keep any music in this folder.
New music is imported into this folder, copied over to my Music Library, and then deleted from iTunes folder (to keep it and my boot drive clean, and my 100GB Music Library folder meticulously organized).
My iTunes folder is set at default:
    iTunes> Preferences> Advanced> Change> iTunes Music folder location
My actual 100-gigabyte-plus music folder is stored on a 2nd hard drive:
    HardDrive> Music Library
    This setup works perfect.
    +++++
    BACKUP
    To backup, I simply:
    1) copy my User> Music> iTunes folder (800mb) to a 3rd hard drive.
    2) copy my HardDrive> Music Library to 3rd hard drive
    RESTORE
    To restore, I simply:
    1) copy my backup iTunes into User> Music.
    2) copy my Music Library back to 2nd hard drive HardDrive.
    3) Relaunch iTunes and every works perfect.
    THE PROBLEM
However, if I change the name of my 2nd hard drive (where my 100GB music folder is stored) — iTunes shows everything in place — all songs, art, playlists — but I get following error on every song:
THE SONG NAMED ______ COULD NOT BE USED BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL FILE COULD NOT BE FOUND. WOULD YOU LIKE TO LOCATE IT?
Obviously I don't want to have to do this individually for 30,000 songs and am looking for instructions how to point iTunes database back to my 2nd hard drive> Music Library and complete the restore process.
I am hoping this can be done without changing my work flow — and it is a simple and logical move to tell iTunes where all the original files (missing songs) are stored.
    +++++
    Previous discussions have noted:
    Following this Apple Support Doc
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
I was able to Quit iTunes, relaunch iTunes holding Option key, and chose my existing library (from my Music folder) — it works, everything shows up — but iTunes still doesn't know where my songs are (on my 2nd hard drive).
If I point the Option+Open iTunes library prompt to my 100GB Music Library (on the 2nd hard drive), it tells me (logically) there is no library there).
I've also launched and manually verifies iTunes> Preferences> Advanced> Change> iTunes Music folder location — it works, everything shows up — but iTunes still doesn't know where my songs are (on my 2nd hard drive).
I anticipate more complications if I reset iTunes preferences to my 2nd hard drive or start dinking around trying to see what works and what does not work.
    +++++
At this point I am trying to make THIS workflow, backup-restore process work — so I am hoping someone else has slugged through this and can take a few minutes to clue me in the right direction (or at least tell me there is no way to do what I am trying).

If I simply rename the second hard drive to the name of the original 2nd hard drive — iTunes is successfully restored.
I am still looking for a better way because I want to change the name of the second HD...

  • PSE 10/12 catalog backup/restore deleted my data

I purchased a new computer today and also purchased PSE 12 (I had PSE 10 running on a different machine/laptop).  On the laptop/PSE 10, I had about 20,000 digital on an external drive (all were tagged according to color, theme, etc via the PSE organizer).  All of the elements were stored on the external drive under a folder called "digital kits".  I used the PSE 10 backup utility to backup my catalog to ease the move to my new machine.  After I performed the backup, I renamed the "digital kits" folder to "digital kits-glw" because I intended to just move the external hard drive to the new computer and restore the catalog to the same path, “E:\digital kits”, as I have other software that is dependent upon that path.  The restore went pretty quickly, and I can see the correct folder structure within PSE 12 Organizer, but all I have is a bunch of blank thumbnails.  Upon closer inspection, the restore did NOT recreate the E:\digital kits folder on the hard drive as I expected.  Worse, the E:\digital kits-glw folder is virtually empty (just a handful of thumb.db files).  So, it appears the backup process deleted/hijacked all of my files.  (Note:  I did NOT verify the contents of the digital kits folder before I renamed it.)  Tech support is closed until Monday, and I’m just sick over the possibility of losing all that data, so I’m turning to you all.  Any ideas what happened and/or how to fix it?  (I have a backup of the data, but without the catalog piece I would have to re-catalog all 20,000 elements!!)

    WickG0ld98 wrote:
Yes, I still have the PSE 10 backup available, and plan to try the restore again but don't have much hope.  I'm stymied as to the files missing from the hard drive. Is the PSE backup procedure typically THAT invasive that it DELETES files on the hard drive during the backup?!?
I have never seen the backup process delete anything.
What I have seen is that the backup itself must be done on a separate folder, which you create normally in the backup dialog definition. Sometimes, users are not careful and  specify an already existing folder : the root folder or a previous backup folder. They can overwrite preexisting files and create catastrophe...
Check that your backup folder, wherever it is, contains a lot of files starting with 'B00...' and a 'catalog.buc' and 'backup.tly' files. If so, you are fine.
About the restore process. You want to restore to another location than before : you have to tell the restore dialog that you want to restore on 'custom location' and speficy that location : drive and master folder. Additionally, you may want to keep the folder structure (arborescence). Of course, if you specify an already existing folder substructure as the destination you'll overwrite existing files.
Also, beware of the external drive letter in Windows. It can be changed by Windows if you insert another component before the external drive; that's why it's a good idea to assign a letter in the end of the alphabet, like R,S... rather than E:.

  • PSE 10 Backup Excludes Some tif & jpg

Goal was:  Backup PSE 10 catalog on laptop and restore it to desktop.
PSE 10 backup of 60K photos failed to backup 4K photos, many .tif and some .jpg.  Reconnected, repaired, repaired anyway & optomized all successfully prior to backup.  Also did same after backup & restoration and all steps were successful except Reconnect was not.  Refuses to reconnect missing files, so have manually found (by scrolling through the catalog) and connected 2.5K photos.  Remaining unconnected photos can only be located one at a time by clicking on Reconnect, which results in a total count of the number missing and then PSE 10 tries to locate just one and when doesn't find it, the PSE 10 closes.  Has taken weeks to reach this point by scrolling 60K photos so remaining, some of which are in stacks, by letting PSER 10 try to Reconnect each photo one at a time and close is a tremendous waste of one life!
Others have written of this same problem, but there has been no solution from Adobe.
Any and all help appreciated.  Thank you.
    Pam

Yes, when you think about it, it's impossible for PSE to backup photos that it can't find....
Where are those "missing" files now located?
Have you tried pausing the reconnection process by hitting the "Browse" button on its window and then pointing the reconnection to the parent directory of the missing files?

  • Erase and sync issues (backup/restore)

    Hello.
I have an issue with the backup/restore with my iPhone.
Sometimes, it is difficult to find an answer that fits your problem exactly on the forum!  Lots of good stuff though!
This post will be little longer than normal, but I need to get all the facts on the table.
I'll try to keep this brief.  Please hear me out!
    From another post ...
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12273122
    Kwopau stated ...
if you do a restore, you only have 2 options, Restore as new, meaning nothing will go on it
and you will just have to start fresh and no contacts will go in there.
The other option is "Restore from Back up _______" it will completely restore your phone
from your last back up and everything will be on there.
    End of quote ...
    Here is my situation.
    I have a 3g 16GB iPhone.
I am still running IOS 3 (not IOS 4).
I do not use sync.  I  manually manage the music and books with iTunes.
    I have an HP laptop.
A while ago, I had to completely rebuild the computer.
The computer has a new computer and user name (I don't know if this matters in iTune/iPhone matchup)?
I have not been able to connect the iPhone since then.
    Let me rephrase that.
I can connect with iTunes.  I can see all that is on the iPhone.
When I try to add or delete music or books on the iPhone with iTunes or set the manually manage check box, I get the following message ...
The iPhone "myname's iPhone" is synced with another iTunes library.
Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with the this iTunes library.
Most commands appear to be grayed  out,  I can't add or delete anything.
I do not have anything in current  iTunes library at the moment.
    My fear is this.
If I do the erase and sync as suggested  (iPhone message above) to the iPhone and then use the new iTunes library,  will I be able to use the backup (I just created) to restore to the iPhone that I just reset?
If so, will it have contacts and all the other stuff?
I can afford to lose the music and books, and perhaps the apps on the iPhone.
I cannot afford to lose my contact list.
I need to find another way to backup the contact list, Outlook, etc?
If there other posts relative to this, please point me to them.
I am afraid to pull the trigger for fear that iTunes will not recognize the iPhone after the erase and sync and then not allow me to restore.
Perhaps someone can put my mind at ease and convince me that it will all be good if I proceed!
Thanks for you time and help in this matter ...
    Bob

Do you know how to transfer purchases? Connect the iPad to the PC and launch iTunes. Click on the iPad nema on the left side of the iTunes window to select it. Then go to File>Transfer Purchases. That should put all of your purchased iPad content into the iTunes library on the PC.
Here are instructions in a very short, easy to follow article.
Transfer iTunes Library to a new computer
This discussion will be helpful to show you how to make the PC work wTunes from the iPad.

This is the discussion from which I borrowed the some of the text in my post from the discussion above.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11527071#11527071
What puzzles me is that if you had updated with the PC, I would have thought that you would have backed up and synced with that PC as well, but read the articles and instructions and post back with questions.
You can email the pdf files to the iPad, or use iOS file sharing, and open and save them in iBooks or another pdf reader app, but start with getting your stuff onto the PC.

  • REMOTE BACKUP & RESTORE on BlackBerry Protect for BB10 operating system ?

Does anyone at BlackBerry or anywhere else know if BlackBerry will introduce for the BlackBerry Protect on the operating 10 system, the >
REMOTE BACKUP & RESTORE feature as is available on the BlackBerry Protect on the
    operating 7 system ?
This is a vital secure cloud backup to the BlackBerry servers and was used by millions of BlackBerry customers on the BlackBerry Protect on the BlackBerry operating 7 system, but it was not included by BlackBerry on the BlackBerry Protect on the operating 10 system.
This is vital and needed most urgently so we can do secure and reliable cloud Backups and Restores from our BlackBerry 10 devices to the secure BlackBerry cloud servers.
All other third party applications to download and use as an alternative, simply do not work and are not stable or reliable or safe or secure.
This was the only totally safe and reliable and secure cloud Backup and Restore and BlackBerry must bring this feature back as either an update or as a new download, but it must be introduced in to the operating 10 software.
Please can anyone at BlackBerry or anywhere else tell me if it will be on the operating 10 software in the near future ?
Also BlackBerry must bring the ( SELECT ALL ) feature to its operating 10 software.
This was a vital feature on the operating 7 software that has also been left out.
This feature is vital when wanting to delete or transfer ALL files in a stored location on the phone or SD card.
If you have for example 100 songs or pictures or documents saved and you want to delete all in one hit, then you would just go in to that folder, for example, just the picture folder if you want to delete all pictures and then you would press >
( SELECT ALL ) and all the contents of that folder you selected would be deleted, in the same way, you can also click on > ( SELECT ALL ) on the contents of that folder to transfer those contents in one hit using Bluetooth to another mobile device or computer.
At this moment when you use a BlackBerry 10 device, this feature is not there and you need to go in to that folder and manually select each and every item that you want to delete or transfer, one item at a time, which is very time consuming and frustrating.
Does anyone at BlackBerry know if this >
( SELECT ALL ) feature will be available for the BlackBerry 10 operating system in the near future in a software update ?
    Can anyone please help ?
Any information on my above two issues ?

I know BlackBerry is working on their cloud service but no word on when or just what they will offer in the future.
As for "select all" that would be nice but haven't heard anything about it coming. It's not in 10.3.1.
    1. Please thank those who help you by clicking the "Like" button at the bottom of the post that helped you.
    2. If your issue has been solved, please resolve it by marking the post "Solution?" which solved it for you!

  • Where is the Bookmarks backup/restore function ?

Where is the Bookmark backup/restore function ?

wchapgm: Please ref cor-el's response. Pretty informative.
And, Thank You both for your kind attention and assistance.
Lastly, note that there seems 2-B another issue.
The backup file format used in the older version isn't recognized by the new version !
So, unless I can find a work-around, I'll have to resort to some "manual transfers" of those resources.

  • PSE 7 backup catalogus

When you create a backup on an external media, you don't create a copy immediately useable on the external media. The backup can only be used by the 'restore' process in the organizer. The restore process reads the backup folder containing renamed versions of your image files as well as your renamed catalog, then it writes them back where you want.
So, you should now use the menu 'file / restore' to write back the files to the new location. Warning : select a new master folder to receive the restored copy, not the same folder than the backup.
Also note that even if the backup / restore process is recommended (much safer), you could simply move your pictures folder trees by 'drag and drop' when you are in 'Folders' view. I assume you are using PSE11 ?

  • Hot Backup & Restore Files.

    Hi Team ,
I am new to the RMAN. Working on HOT backup & restore operation.
I want to know while taking backup which are the files i.e DataFiles , ControlFiles, Snapshot files , password files & archive log files we needed.
Also same for the restore operation.
    Thanks.

    RMAN can backup:
    Datafile
    Controlfile
    SPFile
    Archivelogs
If you want to backup anything else like ini.ora, password file etc then you have to do it manually.

  • HT1766 iCloud Backup, Restore iPhone to Factory Setting

If I restore my original iPhone (4s) to factory settings which will erase all saved data/information, will my back-up files in iCloud be deleted too? I am planning to give my old iPhone away. Thanks.

    No.
A an iCloud or iTunes computer backup must be deleted manually. The backup is not erased when restoring an iPhone even when restored as a new iPhone or not from the backup.

  • Scheduled daily backups of DMM fail - Backup/Restore process stops running

Hi, I have been testing the scheduled backups within the DMM AAI and have found it's performance to be unreliable.
Specifically I am performing FTP backups to a remote network location.  Manual one-off backups complete successfully without any issues, and scheduled backups occur on the same day, however successive (reoccuring) daily backups don't happen and the Backup/Restore process seems to stop running. I have checked the backup logs but these don't provide any insight as to why the backup process stops running.
Has anyone else encountered this?  I am running DMM v5.2.0.25.
    Mike

I am having a similar problem.  Is there a method to restart the backup service without having to reboot the entire DMM Server?
Note that there is no method via the AAI menu system, and the Web Admin console services section is not clear as to whether it will reboot the entire server (which is NOT an easy thing for me to get away with here).
Restarting the 5.2.3 DMM Server (not JUST the service??)
    =========================
I have now learned (per a Cisco engineer), that the 'Scheduled backup services' in the screencap above, is normally in the 'stopped' status "by design", and that it will not show as started in this UI unless the DMM server is actually in a backup.
    ==============================================
    =========================
My backups now work correctly.  I think that the original problem was my NTP settings, which are now fixed.

  • ACS 5.5 (3495) Backup / restore

Having issues with backup & restore on ACS 5.5 running on 3495 platform.
Incremental backups are scheduled daily at 2 AM.  Full backup is scheduled weekly at 6 AM.  Data Purge is scheduled for 4 AM (by the system - unable to change this value).
Log Collector has crashed a couple of times when a full backup is attempted (manual or automated).
TAC had us move database file to a repository and then clean the database.  After the clean, incremental backups sometimes run at 2 AM as scheduled and then at 6 AM.  No idea why.
The data purge job has failed.  I don't think it's running any more.
Incremental backup failed at 6 AM yesterday (1/21/15) because "another backup or restore was already in progress".  Incremental backup wasn't supposed to run at 6 AM.  Apparently, this caused the system to turn scheduled backups "off", so now backups aren't running at all.
Has anyone else experienced these issues?  Is there a known fix?

Took me a while to get the time to respond here.....
acs backup performs a backup of the ACS data so that when need to recover a machine the following process can be perforned:
    - reimage the box
    - restore the ACS data
This ensures the minimum data size is saved to recover the box
acs backup saves the following data:
    - ADE-OS configuration data (all node types)
    - certificate private key
    - ACS configration data (if node is primary)
    - M&T data (if node is M&T node)
If there is a single standalone ACS node performing all functions, data of all types will be saved
I am less familiar with the  "backup" command but I think is application agnostic and will just perform a full backup of the box
Note that additional backup related options are available from the GUI
    - From the deployment operations there is option to backup. On primary operations are "ACS Configuration Backup" or " ADE-OS and ACS Configuration Backup". On secondary instance only option is ADE-OS configuration data.
There are also options to backup M&T data from the GUI. See: "
    Monitoring Configuration > ... >
    System Operations >
    Data Management >
Removal and Backup". Due to the large volumes of data involved there is also an option to use an Incremental backup mechanism (this option is not available from the CLI)

  • AutoText backup & restore

Didn't find a solution reading old threads on this...
I got a replacement phone, same model & OS version, and could not transfer the autotext word substitutions, even using the latest Desktop Software.
It seemed to successfully back up the database, the backup shows 3 "word substitition" databases and 1 "word substitution version" database, but when trying a restore to the replacement phone, it says they didn't transfer.
I've already copied everything over manually, but what a pain, shouldn't this be able to be exported and imported?  I've got a lot of  shortcuts that generate customer service responses, and really need to be able to backup & restore those.
For now I've cut-and-pasted them all into a memo, which does get backed up, but that's a lot of manual cut-and-paste work to recreate them all.
Please RIM, if the databases can't transfer, then make a way to export to a file and import on the other phone.  There's also no apparent way to separate our own additions to what was built-in, which makes it harder.
    thanks

I was able to find a fix for this.
We are in an enterprise environment so encountered the problem
Issue: could not transfer autotext from bold 9700 to new bold 9900 Word Substitution
Installed latest version of BB Desktop Manager
Backup old device & disconnect it and put it away
    On new device go into
Options / Advanced System Settings / Service Book
Delete Desktop [SYNC] (dont worry you can undelete it later)
Connect new device to Desktop Manager
    Choose Restore
Pick the backup you just made of your old device
Choose Select device data and settings
    Choose AutoText (and/or others)
    Click Restore
    Disconnect Deviice
    On new device go into
Options / Advanced System Settings / Service Book
Press Menu Button, and Choose Undelete
Thanks to  Michele for the need, Brian for helping out and to RIM for providing solution on support call.

  • Sapinst error backup/restore phase create controlfile

    Hello experts
I am doing a homogeneous system copy using database specific tools backup/restore.Oracle 10.2.0.5, HP-UX, ECC 6.0
Source = ZD1 and Target = ZD1 (Yes they are both same) Source was a fresh install with brand new Export data (SID = ZD1) and now we are replacing the database with a copy of our existing Dev system (also SID = ZD1)
Restored the backup over target using OFFLINE backup. Have not run any "recover database ...." or "alter database open resetlogs" yet because sapinst is suppose to do this.
My control script looks like this: filename = CONTROL.SQL
    STARTUP NOMOUNT
CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE SET DATABASE "ZD1" RESETLOGS ARCHIVELOG
        MAXLOGFILES 255
        MAXLOGMEMBERS 3
        MAXDATAFILES 254
        MAXINSTANCES 50
        MAXLOGHISTORY 23371
    LOGFILE
      GROUP 1 (
        '/oracle/ZD1/origlogA/log_g11m1.dbf',
then all the data file paths (which I verified to be correct)
    ends with:
    '/oracle/ZD1/sapdata4/sr3_61/sr3.data61',
      '/oracle/ZD1/sapdata4/sr3_62/sr3.data62'
    CHARACTER SET UTF8
    Now here is the issue:
    1) When I manually run the CONTROL.SQL and then just do a alter database open resetlogs everything is fine. Database mounts and opens fine. However when I run the sapinst it tries to run the CONTROL.SQL again and messes up everything. I would like to skip this phase in sapinst and change ERROR to OK in keydb.xml file. Question is when should I do this ? Before starting sapinst so that it skips this or during the phase it stops and asks for backup/restore ?
    2) Instead creating files manually I also let sapinst do this. But it throws an error during control file creation. When I used the above CONTROL.SQL it says must use resetlogs to open database. Then I restored all over again and added the line alter database open resetlogs at the end of CONTROL.SQL
    '/oracle/ZD1/sapdata4/sr3_61/sr3.data61',
      '/oracle/ZD1/sapdata4/sr3_62/sr3.data62'
    CHARACTER SET UTF8
    ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESTLOGS;
And then ran sapinst again from scratch and now it throws error file 1 needs media recovery.
This is weird and I don't know why sapinst acting smart here and wont let me do it and when it does it by himself it messes up.
Is my CONTROL.SQL scripts correct ? Whats the best approach here.
    Thank you

    Hello Nicholas
Thank you. I have replaced the CONTROL>SQL in the installation directory itself. Its in /tmp/sapinst_instdir/ERP/LM/COPY/ORA/SYSTEM/CENTRAL/AS And yes it IS picking up the control.sql that I provided and not the default.
    DatabaseSAP
Thank you. I have never commented  anything in keydb.xml before. But sounds like a good idea because if I can restore it myself I really want to skip this step. Should I just do it before start of sapinst  and what exact lines to comment ? Which keydb should I edit ? I found several but looks like ./ERP/LM/COPY/ORA/SYSTEM/CENTRAL/AS/keydb.xml is the right one.

  • How do I backup/restore multiple IPhone on one computer

    Hi everyone
Need some help here. I work as a helpdesk and recently most of the IPhones are now due for upgrade. What is the best way to backup the data from old Iphone and restore to new Iphone for multiple users on one computer?  Basically everyone expects to hand me their old phone and new phone, and when they get the new phone back, the new phone will have the same data as it was on the old one.
I have done backup/restore just for myself before. Is there a easier way to do for multiple users on the same computer?
    Any input will be appreciated
    Thanks
    Charlie

First of all, thanks for quick reply.
How about backup to icloud and then restore from icloud?  I did not bring it up because I do not want the backup/restore to cripple to network.
I would normally ask the users to take their old phone and new phone to AT&T store or Apple store to get it done. But as I work in corp office, and all I dealt with are the CEO, CFO, etc. They want the upgrade process done and without them getting involved (I try to keep it that way to make them happy).
    any thoughts?
    Charlie
