  • Problems with Smart Album after Computer "crashed"

    Hello
While working in Photoshop the cursor froze and nothing worked anymore so that I had to force the computer to shut down (while my aperture library was open). When I started the computer new. All the JPEG files that I created before were corrupt and the aperture library as well. I was working in a smart album and had about 1'000 pictures manually dragged together. When I started the library after the crash, the "custom-sort" was not functioning anymore. All pictures were sorted according to the image date. If I create a new smart album now, there is no more the possibility of "custom"-sort. Can someone please help me? Thank you very much in advance. Sarosa

I wrote some programs that will probably help:
This one removes the tracks that iTunes cannot find:

This one removes the duplicates (if they are exactly the same file, or one that is like "foofile.mp3", and "foofile 1.mp3")

  • Customized contact sheets from manual sorted iPhoto 7.0.2 albums.

I manually sorted photos in my iPhoto '08 album and want to print contact sheets showing the photos in this sorted order. Everything is working fine choosing the preselected contact sheet with 3 rows and 4 lines i. e. 12 pictures on each page. But when trying to customize the preselected contact sheet (for I want 4 rows and 5 lines) the manual sorting is gone and instead the pictures are sorted otherwise (by name I guess). Does anyone has any idea to solve the problem?
(I use Tiger 10.4.10, Mac Pro QuadCore, iPhoto 7.0.2)

    Gunther:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Have you tried dragging the photos in the contact sheet customize window to arrange them as you want? It works that way for me.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto manual sort, not in events or albums.

I'm running Mavericks on MBP, I would like to manually sort my photos in iPhoto in order uploaded. Not in events, in photo view where you can see all your photos. I do not want to organize an album. I cannot drag and drop photos in order. Manual sort is grayed out, I cannot change this. Past answers to this question suggest if start manually moving things then the option will become available. I cannot manually move anything, it just won't respond. Help please.

You can't do what you want. The Library (whether in Events or Photos view) cannot be sorted manually. If you want to use manual sorting you must use Albums.

  • Sorting movies in iPhoto smart album

I created an album of our summer vacation which includes photos and video clips.  I would like to separate out the video clips and stitch them together.  Either in iMovie or otherwise.   Any thoughts on how to separate out the movies?  I tried the New Smart Album > Keyword > is > movie.  It sorted my whole library, not just the album (and I did have all photos/clips selected).
And then, how best to stitch them together?  iMovie or is there a function in iPhoto?
Any thoughts are appreciated.  Thank you.

In your summer album flag just the video clips.  Use the Events ➙ New Event from Flagged Photos to create a new event of just those flagged video clips (assuming you have no other flagged photos).
Or give the video clips in the summer album a star rating and use a smart album:  Keyword is Movie and Rating is XX.

  • Manual sort of images

How do I manually sort images in the grid mode?

You grab the image part of the thumbnail, not the grey surround, then drag to new position. Also, note that you can only manually sort from within the folder containing the images or Collection.

  • Can you manually add photos to a Smart Album?

I have created Smart Albums using faces.  IE one for my daughter.  I have some other pictures I want to put in the album that I want in her album but don't have a face that is hers.  It wont let me drag onto it.  Help!

That is correct - smart albums are automatic and photos are added or removed based on meeting the set criteria - one way to do it is to add a keyword for thos photos and include that keyword as ann optional criteria for the smart album

  • Blank album after import from iphoto

after try to open one of my iPhoto library (500gb) in new photo apps....
it take some time to update and then later on it show blank album of photos which is ready to import and none of the pictures is there

It sounds as though you may have imported the thumbnails but I can't imagine how.
It all depends on what you mean by very low quality.
Your iPhoto  pictures will be around 4,000x3,000 pixels but when they are imported into a standard def timeline they will be around 720x540 which is a tremendous reduction.
They should still look OK but not  as good as the brilliant hi-res originals.

  • ITunes split my album after importing

just got my new imac with latest version of itunes.
and turned on home sharing, merged both libraries from my macbook pro and this new imac.
and most albums has been split, and i drag to think to import the entire collection all over again.
so i thought i import a brand new album into my new imac to see if is still the same, and yes, itunes split it again.
    any help is much appreciated.
    thanks.

This is entirely a metadata issue. I have had the problem with various imports of music. Generally, to get a full album together that has been split, you can select all the tracks of that album, then alter the metadata - there are many ways to use the 'get info' metadata editor to bring all the tracks together for a particular selection.
As suggested above, checking the compilation box can work in many cases - I prefer that only for compilation albums because I use the iTunes keep media folder organized option.
Also, as mentioned above, setting an album artist - as different than what may be in the song artist for individual tracks - can work.
Also, if an album has more than one CD, then you can use the disc number, 1 of 2 then 2 of 2, and so on, to further refine how iTunes lists your music collection.
Another trick I have used is to set the album artist as 'Various' - if you do that, then you don't need the compilations box checked, but iTunes will create a new artist called various, and put the music so designated there.
Most of the things you can do that will help are in the 'get info' - info window, but sometimes it helps to use the 'get info' - sorting window.
Also, sometimes you find metadata that you want to delete in various fields as you work through the metadata of your collection.
Unfortunately, there is probably not much you can do with the entire library at once in this regard that keeps iTunes music folders organized nicely. But there is the unlikely possibility that, if you are viewing your entire library, say in list view, you may have selected a header that causes the albums to be split - set to view as list, highlight 'album' (as opposed to album by artist or artist/year) - then scroll though fixing any split albums as you go, using the method of selecting the album tracks, get info, and adjusting the metadata as you prefer for each album. It is a process, but it is also thoughrough.
There are some free scripts you may want to download that will do some helpful batch processing
I have made much use of  - hubi's iTunes scripts - the download page isn't English, but the script download is easy to find, just click the following link and scroll till you see
    hubi's iTunes scripts
the read me instructions and script list are in English
hubi's scripts work for batch selections of tracks - so if you import an album and find the metadata screwed up somehow, you can select the whole set of screwed up tags at once (even across a series of albums), run the easy to use script, and watch it all be fixed automatically while you sit back and relax... I would advise running a script on a small test selection of tracks first - just to get used to and familiar with how it works and to see that does what you intend - I haven't had any problems with the ones I used.

there are other useful scripts out there, like Doug's Scripts
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=itunestrackcpr
Anyway, I hope all that helps.
just for reference, here is a sampling of what some of hubi's scripts can do...
    01-(un)capitalizes
    01-(un)capitalizes
This script changes.... THIS TEXT into This Text... or this text
    01-Delete spaces
Sometimes invisible blanks are behind an artist name or album name...this script deletes these blanks behind or infront of the strings
    01-Delete x first-last chars. of Title
A Name like "01--Ray Of Light" will be changed to "Ray Of Light" and the01 will be entered in the tracks tracknumber id3 field =)
    01-fix combined Artist-Title
    Sometimes Tracknames look like:
"Madonna---Ray of Light" and in the artist field you see something like"Ripped by Me"... this script puts Madonna back to the right field... all youhave to do is to enter the right delimiter ("---" in this case)
    01-switch Artist<->Title...
Switch ID3 field a with ID3 field b (not only Artist with Title any more =)!
    01-z_filename ->Title
Sets the ID3 field Title to the track's filename)
    01-z_trackNr-Filename->ID3
When a track's filename look like "01-Madonna-Ray of Light.mp3" andyou don't have the track's tracknumber stored in the ID3 Tag... this Scriptcan do this for your =)

  • Sorting within iPhoto albums:  eliminate carryover from prior manual sorts?

I am working with a large series of photos from a recent vacation, arranging the images for captioning and sharing as slideshows.  I've pulled the images over to new albums, one per day, and would ideally sort them once by date, then change to manual sort and adjust a few images' position in the queue.  But when I switch from date sort to manual sort, the images immediately revert to a relatively random-looking order that I think must be the order in which they were edited and then pulled into the finishing album.  Since some of these albums include several hundred photos, the idea of starting over with completely manual sort of all of the images is VERY painful.  Sorting them by date and then copying and dragging the sorted images to a new album, and then resetting to manual sort, reverts them to the same order they had in the previous album.
Any suggestions for how to fix the date sort some way, then do a fresh manual sort that leaves the date sort as my starting point?
    (and is the question clear?)

    Another thank you.
I could not figure out how to manually movie my photos & videos.  "Manually" & "Reset manual" were greyed out in Smart Albums.  So I deleted Smart Albums and just made an "Album."   "Manually & "Reset manual" magically appeared un-greyed.
Took me awhile to figure out that you can only manually move the last picture or video.

  • Changing Sort Order in Smart Album when Looking for Roll Name=Corruption

We've confirmed via testing and from new posters that changing the sort order in a Smart Album who's criteria is to look for a roll name will cause iPhoto to crash and then crash upon launch after that.
So to avoid corrupting your library do not change the sort order of a Smart Album designed to locate rolls.
    The thread discussing this is:
IPhoto keeps on crashing, cannot use it
Rebuilding the library with iPhoto Library Manager recovered the library. However, I don't know if a rebuild via the Control+Option key will do the same.
    G5 Dual Core 2GHz, 2G RAM, 22 Display, 250G HD, 200G FW HD, QT 7.0.4P   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Canon S400, i850 & LIDE 50, Epson R200, 2G Nano

Ha! I upgraded to iPhoto 6.0.3 and opened the dummy library I had created. (This was the library where the crash on launch kept happening because I had a smart folder looking for rolls and sorted by title or something else other than the default.)
Guess what, it opened just fine! 6.0.3 fixes the crash. Not sure how much it helps people who started new libraries, but at least others won't run into this.

  • Trying to make a book - iPhoto changing the order of my manually sorted album.  Help?

I'm trying to make a book from an album.
I have manually sorted the photos in the album and wanted autoflow to fill the book in.
However, when I create a new book from the album, iPhoto seems to re-order the photos by one of the other options (eg: by date.)  If I change that sort option under view - sort, and switch it to manual, it wants me to manually re-sort based on the previous setting.  I have already done my sorting in the album.  Is there a configuration I can do that will get iPhoto to recognise that manual album order?
    (iphoto 11 v9.2.1)

The only solution I've seen reported is to change the dates of the photos using the batch change command with a increment so the date sort will be the same as your manual sort - you can search the forum for one of these posts - and I do not remember how they proposed to undo the date change

  • How to arrange photos in a smart album

I have a hundred or so pics put into the library. I then created smart albums based on keywords but the pics are out of order and need to be arranged. It won't let me. It will be difficult to just go into the library and do it since I wwill be looking at pics from all categories. Suggestions? Thanks,

You can change the order with the different View options, but you can't manually arrange items in a Smart Album. Select all photos in the smart album and copy them into a regular album, where you can manually rearrange them.

  • Smart Album conversion problems

My Aperture Smart Albums were imported, but the text "(modified)" was appended to each album name.
Aperture Smart albums allow you to apply the selection rules to a subset of the library, but in Photos the rules are applied to the entire library. So my "Best of 2014 (modified)" smart album in Photos selects every 5 star image from my entire collection, not just last year.  At least the star ratings were properly converted to keyword phrases and the selection rules were changed to match.

You'll probably need to modify them. Make the "best of 2014" album be of a certain rating, and add a date to it as well. You can change the name at the same time.
Photos doesn't have as much power as an organization tool as Aperture did. You can probably come up with a system that works for you, but it will operate differently than Aperture did.
