Manual transfer *replaced* my iPod contents! How prevent this?

New iPod owner here...
I have a very large collection of music on my hard drive already (I have a Squeezebox). Much of this is in FLAC and WMA formats, but there's enough mp3 content to get going. Ultimately, it is my intention not to even try to keep the iPod in sync with my disc collection, but to transcode and transfer albums from time to time (then delete the transcoded copy on the hard disc). I hope that iTunes can support this way of working; if it can't, then I might as well return the iPod.
I installed iTunes, and let it loose... Thankfully, I opted not to automatically convert the WMA files, for it is abysmally slow even for the few albums I've tried since (never mind 4000+ tracks in one mouthful!)
Whenever I connect the iPod, iTunes and indeed my PC grind to a halt for about 10 minutes; then iTunes complains about all the files it can't transfer; finally, it synchronises. So even if I've only changed or added a few tracks, any sync takes forever. (So a subsidiary question is: how can I stop iTunes from doing this 10-minute rescan on each sync?)
So I decided to switch to manual updates (which I will want ultimately anyway). At first, I thought this was working fine. I used "Add Folder" to convert a small number of WMA albums, then selected the results and dragged them onto the iPod icon.
It was only after doing this a couple of times, that I realised that the last drag-and-drop had replaced the entire contents of my iPod with the newly-selected files!
Why did this happen? And, much, much more important: how can I stop it from happening again?
-- Brian

Ok so HD video is not supported, which explains the problem so what is the solution?  Do I have to put it through a converter to make the data and bit rate smaller? Would that even be possible?

  • I understand you can transfer photos from Picasa to my ipad using an ipod. How is this done?

I want to transfer photos from my PC laptop (Picasa)  to my ipad. Someone told me I can do this via my ipod. How is this done?

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Just bought Ipad mini and trying to transfer DragonVale from Ipod.  How do I do this?

Just bought Ipad mini and trying to transfer DragonVale from Ipod.  How do I do this?

Redownload it from the iTunes Store or sync it from an iTunes library which contains it. If you want to transfer its data as well, back up the iPod and then restore the backup to the iPad mini.

  • I would like to manually transfer all my iMovie content from SL to LION.  How do I do this manually?

    HI!
I want to manually transfer all of my iMove data ( projects etc) from SL to LION.
What is the best way for me to do this?
Does the data need to be stored on an external drive so an OPTION / click OPEN is performed or is it emerly a matter of dragging and dropping a folder?
    Thanks

    Hi
or is it emerly a matter of dragging and dropping a folder?
    NO - No No No
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this intoEvents.
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project

Safari "Download Linked File As ..." dialog box seems to convert 3 or more consecutive period chars (\056) into a Unicode ellipsis char ( \342\200\246 ) in the file name that I type.  How does one prevent this ?

I know nothing about “EndNote”, but allow me to give you some general advice. Your first, commented-out, line (“--section to wait for window to pop up”) indicates that you need to change the basic way you are tackling what you want to do. When writing any script, if you know the name and location of a file or a directory (folder) you should not cause (or allow, or need) your script to open an Open or a Save window -- just use the path that you already know.

  • How do i transfer my complete ipod contents to the ipod program in my computer?

how can i transfer contents of my ipod back to my itunes program in my computer?

I use MusicRescue, which will move music, videos, notes, and photos. You can use it for free too, although you have to click off a reminder message every 50 files.

  • Can I transfer my old iPod content directly to new iPod?

I'm going to buy a new iPod and have alot of music on it that isnt in my music library.  Can the music be directly transferred to a new ipod?

No.  The music on the older iPod must be imported into iTunes first before it can be synced to the new iPod. See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • Why can't I manually transfer podcasts onto ipod?

I have an ipod classic, and I'm trying to move selected podcasts onto it by clicking and dragging.
It looks like it should work, but nothing goes onto my ipod. If I add the podcasts to a playlist and then add the playlist, then I can get the podcasts to move onto the ipod, but does anyone know why I can't do it the normal way?
I don't want to sync all my episodes as then I'll lose most of them because they're from another computer that died.

This seems very similar (if not identical) to my issue:

Has Apple removed the ability to manually select and delete individual Podcasts on your iPod via iTunes? And if so, why on earth would they do that? It can't be a "feature" can it?
I don't want to have to delete Podcast episodes from my harddrive/iTunes library simply to delete them from my iPod; I maintain a large library of Podcasts, and I like to manually move them to the iPod when I feel like listening to them in the car or whatever, and deleting them later (from the iPod only, not from iTunes).
I'm about ready to downgrade back to iTunes 6...

  • Mp2 files plays in iTunes, but does not transfer to my iPod

Hi, I have been recording digital radio programs using my Cyrus DAB 8.0. The recordings are on a SD card and are in mp2 format. These easily transfer into iTunes, but do not transfer to my iPod. How can I overcome this. I guess I have to convert the mp2 files, but I do not want to lose quality. The files are sampled at 192KHz. Would they play on an Apple TV? Any help and suggestions please?

You can convert your MP2 files into Apple Loseless. Those files are playable on the iPod and also its a uncompressed format. To do that, you'll have to change some preferences. Go to iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>Import. You can change the conversion format there. To convert the songs, select all the songs that you want to convert. Then option click on the selection. There is the convert to Apple Lossless option. And you can delete the old files if you want to.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
