Manual Update: Update Playlist?

In iTunes, if I drag a recently updated Playlist to my iPod, I get dupes in the Pod's Library of the tunes that previously lived in the Playlist.
I have a 2G Pod that can't hold all of my Library, so it's set to manual update. After adding a few tunes to a particular playlist in iTunes, if I drag the playlist to the Pod to update the playlist, I get duplicate tunes in my Pod's Library. Two each for every old tune in the Playlist.
I've tried first deleting the Pod playlist before updating, which worked exactly once, but every time since trying this method, it results in dupes. I wish Option-Delete worked for iPod Playlists.
Is this normal behavior, or is there a pref I can kill that might fix this? As you know, hunting down dupes on a Pod is a pain, and an Applescript isn't that helpful here.
Worst case I suppose I could enable Playlist Sync for the Pod, but I'd be relegated to Checkbox ****; I have well over a 100 Playlists. I'm not in a hurry to go down this road.

Didn't you just answer your own question. If you are already updating to a playlist then update the playlist then hook the pod up to sync.

Are you leaving the box unchecked to Manually manage music & videos? You don't need to to add anything to the iPhone.
Simply drag the playlist to the iPhone to manually add it.

Thanks! I have several ipod books and they told me about manually updating songs but not playlists. That tutorial is VERY helpful. I assume that if you manually update the playlist, all the songs contained in it would have had to been previously manually updated to the ipod....to say it another way, updating the playlist does not transfer any songs. Am I correct?

Cannot delete songs from iPod when in manual update mode

I am using iTunes 7 and i'm trying to delete some songs just from my iPod and i have always used the manual update option.
The problem is when i go into the songs on my iPod and go into a playlist and try to delete the songs within a playlist it won't let me. BUT when i search for those same songs within my iPod library (library shows all songs on the iPod) i can delete them.
So my problem is i cannot delete songs within playlists just from my iPod. I know that deleting the playlist on the left hand side navigation bar will still keep the songs there, it will only delete the actual playlist.
Also when i select a song(s) the edit menu is all greyed out except for copy.
Can anyone help please.

Try using the key combination Shift-Delete when deleting from a song from a playlist, this will delete it from the library as well.

Sync Play count between iPod & iTunes when manually update selected

Hello,
I use manual updating on iTunes simply because I have so much music, it wont fit onto my iPod, so I manually select the songs I want on.
I have been reading and find that doing this stops the iPod and iTunes from updating the Play count and Last played. Doesnt this sound a bit daft?
People have played suggestions such as creating certain playlists that are automatically synced with the iPod, but my songs are all in playlists.
Is there any addon or way that you can get the iPod and iTunes to automatically sync that part so it updates? Without turning on automatic syncing?

Playcounts only sync if you are syncing. They don't if you're manually managing your music. Sorry.

Manually updating podcasts in 7

I may be missing something but I can't find how to manually update podcasts in 7.

This doesn't work for me. I manually add podcasts (i hate syncing) but they do not appear under the "music" or the "podcasts" icon. They used to appear, along with music, under my ipod icon in itunes6. This served as the ipod's library and i could manage everything from there.
If I manually add podcast to my ipod icon (I can't to the podcast or music icon) it disappears into the ether. The podcast is transfered to my ipod but I can't find it through itunes. If I add it to say a "podcast" playlist i can access it there, but deleting it from the playlist does not delete it from the library.
I am at a loss as to how to find these files with itunes7 as I usually do delete them after listening to them. Unless I go back to itunes6 i'm going to end up with a lot of garbage on my ipod i can't easily delete.
If anyone has a clue to this I'd love to hear it.

Update playlists in itunes from ipod

Does anyone know how to update playlists in itunes from an ipod nano? I have been updating my ipod playlists (i.e. removing unwanted songs, duplicate songs, etc) but now I don't know how to copy these modified playlists back onto itunes. I have read about Yamipod and other programs, but I don't want to copy the actual files back onto my computer, just the playlists! Any suggestions?

You must have been doing this through iTunes and with the iPod set to manual transfer since there is no way to modify playlist in the manner you describe directly on the iPod.
You cannot transfer any playlist info back to iTunes from the iPod without using something such as Yamipod.
Or you will have to modify the playlists manually in iTunes to match those on the iPod.

Manually updating songs

I only want certain songs on my ipod because my husband and I both have one and I don't want some of his songs on my ipod. I tried automatically updating from just my own playlists per the help instructions but after updating it still has all the songs I don't want/didn't check on there...help please??!!

First, make sure when updating via playlist only that you have checked the box "update checked songs only" and sync to the playlist you've checked.
To update manuall, set the iPod to "manually manage songs & playlists" and highlight the songs you want on the iPod, right click & hold the mouse, then drag the selected songs onto the iPod icon in the source list in iTunes and just wait until the iPod updates.

Another Easier Alternative:
While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys in Windows (CMD + Option keys on a Mac). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes. The iPod will then appear in the iTunes source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto-sync and then you can release the keys. This action may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer.
You can then ‘right-click‘ on the iPod icon in iTunes’ source column and select iPod Options, then check the box that says “Manually manage songs and playlists”. You can now manage your library without losing any songs on the iPod.
Note: If connecting to a different computer than the ‘iPod’s Home Computer’, iTunes will ask you if you want to update your iPod and give you an opportunity to opt out. This will not happen if you connect to the ‘Home’ computer – iTunes will auto-sync without warning!. Best to know the difference.

I had read enough on these boards to know I ought to manually update my iPod rather than automatically update. But then I kept getting the "do not disconnect" flashing on my iPod. I went in to disable disk use in preferences as I'd read in some threads. It was grayed out- I couldn't disable it. I enabled automatic updates in the purchased playlists only, figuring that would limit damage of lost songs. Except it didn't. I have very few since I'm just starting out but now I'm also missing those songs in the playlist in iTunes. So...
1) How can I disable disk use AND manually update? Or should I just not be concerned about disconnecting my iPod as long as I don't hear the drive whirring, as the Apple website says?
2) I don't suppose there's any way to recover the lost songs?

Just make sure you let your iPod finish updating before trying to eject it.
And! If for some reason it seems to be disconnected (no longer appears in iTunes or Windows) but the screen still reads "Do Not Disconnect," shut down the computer and wait for the iPod to return to the main menu before you unplug it.

How can I switch from Automatic to Manual update without losing songs?

I have on my ipod songs from another computer, however I'm afraid to plug it into my computer because my computer is set to automatic update for my ipod. Is there a way for me to switch my ipod to manual update without losing songs on my ipod when plugging it in? thanks.

Here is what you do:
Open iTunes.
Plug in your ipod.
hold control and shift at the same time. this stops your ipod from updating automatically. Hold this until your ipod is finished docking.
Then go to edit>preferences>ipod
then change the setting from update automatically to update manually.

Turning back on the "manual update" feature in iTunes

Ok, there's two iPods, mine and my sisters, and we both use the same iTunes. My iPod is set up to update automatically whenever I connect it to the computer and hers is set so that it doesnt automatically update when it's connected, but I just drag and drop certain songs into her iPod.
Now, I tried putting a new video on her iPod and in the videos tab of her iPod in iTunes I clicked on upload all the videos, it wouldnt let me drag on drop.
This has changed the settings on the iPod and now whenever i connect it to the computer it starts updating the iPod with my library.
Is there any way of putting this setting back to the manual update function? As it is im scared to leave it connected for too long because i dont want it to erase songs she has on her iPod that i no longer have on my iTunes.

Just a thought - connect your own ipod, let it sync automatically and then change the itunes sync setting to manual. Maybe that changes the next syncing of your sister's ipod to manual as well?

Using a second computer with an ipod set to manual update

I want to prevent my ipod 60GB video which is set to manual update on my G5 from being updated when I plug it into my powerbook. The powerbook assumes the ipod is available for auto update. How do I mount the iPod without iTunes automatically replacing its contents. I can't "preset" iTunes in its preferences to treat the iPod as a manual drive as it just says: "no iPod connected. As soon as I attach the iPod the auto update starts. Are there keystrokes to interrupt the update so I can set the iPod preferences on my Powerbook?

Hold down the ⌥ and ⌘ keys while connecting your iPod. Keep them down until iTunes has opened and your iPod shows in the Source list.
