Manually deleted duplicates, corrupted library, now what?

I'm new to Mac. I imported photos into iPhoto, played with iPhoto for a while, and decided for a variety of reasons - including the fact that I ended up with a TON of duplicates - to install Picasa and use Picasa to manage my photos.
I used Picasa to identify, and then manually delete photos. I identified folders that contained duplicates and deleted them. They're still in the trash.
Then, I realized that I was better off sticking to iPhoto. So - in the Photo display, all of the photos are still there, but attempting to zoom into them reveals a black screen with a "!"
So, how do I get out of this mess? It seems that I can rebuild the library, but what should I do about the folders that I dragged into the trash?
I'm trying to figure out how to get myself out of this mess...

To delete an Event, delete or move all the pics within it. You can merge Events simply by dragging one to another.
FWIW here’s a canned answer I use when folks are thinking about organising their photos. Maybe something will strike an idea for you.
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums exensively. I title the pics broadly.
I keyword on a
Who
What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 25k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
File -> New Smart Album
set it to 'All"
title contains Seattle
keyword is mountain
keyword is snow
rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
New Smart Album
Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
Keywording takes time to set up, there's no doubt about it. I use Keyword Manager as it's much more powerful than the inbuilt system, and adds the possibility of nested keywords. So, for instance, if I add John to a photo it also adds 'Family'. Now I can add many keywords to a pic quickly.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

Consolidated Library, now what?

I reformatted my hard drive after consolidating my library, now I want to put the music back, and am having trouble. I tried importing, then adding files, and it's a flipping hassle. Anyone know how to do this? Do I have to manually add each file from every artist from every folder? I can see the songs that I consolidated, now just getting them to the Itunes library...oh, and I don't know what I did, but I was somehow able to copy over those playlists, like 90's and recently played, ect. So those are in my library now, but that's it. Thanks!

Corrupted. Now what?

My 160GB Classic is corrupted (error 1439). I've reset it to factory settings. When I connect to iTunes, it won't connect. The device doesn't show up in iTunes.
I've made sure to download the most recent version of iTunes, and restarted my computer, etc. Now what?

Hey I have the same problem! I bought a used iPod, I restored it but everytime I plug it into my mac it says iPod corrupt. So I can't do anything but keep restoring it... it's weird. So if you know of anything let me know!

Deleting duplicates in library

II've noticed over time I've got a few duplicates in the library but want to is there a easy way of deleting them all or do I have to do the tracks one at a time ! I know through view I can show duplicates but is there a way iTunes will do it for you instead of me doing it one at a time ! Oh plus im on iTunes match / cloud so do that cause I problems

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here: Find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership, or that sometimes the same file can be represented by multiple entries in the library and that deleting one and recycling the file will break the other.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created. If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.
I don't have access to iTunes Match for testing, but I suspect it might be a good idea to turn it off while cleaning the library.

Song won't download because the "File seems to be corrupt". Now what?

I purchased a song through iTunes and am trying to download it on my PC. The song tries to download 4 TIMES, then displays an ERROR MESSAGE that THE SONG COULD NOT BE DOWNLOADED. THE FILE SEEMS TO BE CORRUPT. RETURN TO THE "CHECK FOR AVAILABLE DOWNLOADS" IN THE STORE MENU. I have done this several times. NO CHANGE, ALWAYS THE SAME ERROR MESSAGE. What do I do next. I either want the song to correctly download or get a refund for the purchase. Please Help.

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copy of the track and try redownloading a fresh one:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not downloading properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the entry, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.

Imported iPhoto library now what?

Probably a real newbie question.... After importing my iphoto library and keeping files in original location, I'm confused how to get new images into Aperture without manually selecting each file. I still use iphoto to upload new images/videos, but it looks like if I try importing my iphoto library again it will create another duplicate library of all my files (even if I check the "do not import duplicates" box). Is there an easy way of having Aperture 3 import files as new ones are placed in iphoto? Or do I now need to start having Aperture manage my files?

You select one or the other. Do not use both. The only exception is for some publication projects which are only available in one or the other, in which case you would export your edited images and import them just for that project.

Manually deleted a java application - now getting errors

I mistakenly started deleting an application manually instead of going through Enterprise Manager, now I'm getting error messages whenever I try to manage any of my oc4j instances and deploying ear files.
We are running Oracle 10g Application Server and our database is 9i. The error message appears in the Application Server Control window. Please let me know if you need more info.

Personally I would make sure that my configuration was ok by checking the default-web-site.xml and application.xml in %ORACLE_HOME%\j2ee\%OC4J%\config. If I knew for a fact that this was all ok, then I would issue: dcmctl updateconfig force -v (can't remember the exact syntax of the force flag, but it sure looks like this). This would cause the correct (=local) config to sync into the respository.

Deleting Duplicate iPhoto Library?

I recently had to rebuild my iphoto library that was unresponsive and would not import photos from any source. I used a fix found on this site by utilizing the iphoto library manager. I did a rebuild of the default library. I understand that I now have an originaly (non-working library) and now a 2nd rebuilt working library. If I understand things correctly I now have 2 libraries of the exact same photos but one works and the other does not. Therefore, can I safely delete the original, non-working, library in order to free up space since I will not be using that original library every again? Or is there something being used by the rebuilt library that is needed from the orginal?
Bottom line: I would like to delete the original, non-working, library so I don't have to worry about it and free up space. Can I do that safely? If so, how (specifically)?

The Masters folder is just that: one of the Folder within the Library.
If you want to move the Library
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

[SOLVED][Code::Blocks]Installed needed library, now what?

Hi ARCH-ers,
Today I've got IMO quite easy question but which I cannot overcome by myself - I want to start making some OpenGL stuff using GLFW in Code::Blocks enviroment. I've installed glfw package from official ARCH repositiories. But when I choose GLFW Project in Code::Blocks it asks me to point GLFW location. So now my question is : where it is? Where had this package been installed? Or maybe I'm missing some important puzzle in this whole thing.
I've also googled out this page http://wiki.codeblocks.org/index.php?ti … lling_GLFW but this zip file seems to lack in Linux make files.

@Raynman Thanks, 'pacman -Ql <name>' is what I was asking for.
But unfortunately things have now turned out to be more complex than I thought. The way pacman have installed it seems not to be matching Code::Blocks needs - files are scattered all around dirrefent directiores while it need a proper arrangement.

I tried pointing different directions but only /usr/include/GLFW have required glfw3.h file. and nonetheless Code::Blocks shows an error like this:
The path you entered seems valid, but the wizard can't locate the include directory. The wizard cannot continue.
Do anyone know Code::Blocks well enough to point me out a solution?

System Deleted... Now What?

I bought a used powermac g4 off the net for $50, i got it on friday and everything works good. Today i connected my ibook to it via firewire to transfer data and accidentally erased the powermacs memory. Now when i turn it on i get an error message "unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac3,1"" with a bunch of writing on a black screen down to a final line of "Kernel Version: Darwin Kerner Version 8.11.0 panic: we are hanging here..."
Anyone have experience with this?

I'm just posting this out of coincidence of the thread, not on actual advice for the problem.
I have Panther, this ACTUALLY sort of just happened to me as well for the first time ever. I've had this computer for five years and my computer one day, just out the blue, started up in Darwin instead of OS X. It freaked me out because it kept doing it and I don't know the command to get to OS X from Darwin. I thought I messed up my computer and I had no way to search Google for a solution from Darwin, but luckily I remembered that if you hold the "X" key while starting up, it will change system startup to OS X and "sigh of relief" that worked. I must have bumped a key at start up that made it start in Darwin. This is probably not your solution if you erased something, but it sounds like what you are seeing is Darwin.
Like I said, I'm posting this more as conversation than advice, but you never know.

Deleted old iPhone update, now what?

I received an error message during the new iPhone update 1.1.1, and I read some of the discussions here about removing a previous iPhone update (iPhone1,11.1.1_3A109aRestore.ipsw) to allow for the new 1.1.1 update. I did that and the update worked, but I am not sure - do I need to keep that other update, or should I just toss it? Thank you!!
P.S. My update worked just fine after deleting the file above.

It won't do you any good to keep the old update since you supposedly cannot revert to it anyway. Trash it and empty the trash.

Indesign CS3 Installer Database Corrupt? (Now what w/Win 8.1)

I have tried to install CS3 from my CD and from a direct download off Adobe and get this same message: Installer database corrupt.
Does CS3 not run on Windows 8.1? Any ideas on how I can make this work?

If Bob says so, I'm sure he's right. I know we had a problem running the installer for the downloaded files and needed specific directions for that. Additionally, I believe that Acrobat 8 was not supported by Win 7 and we did get that working properly too.

How to delete duplicate music in itunes

I have been downloading a lot of my old CD's and have found I have a lot of duplicate songs from a variety of my album sets...how can I delete them so I only have one of each one?

Dupin may be what you need. If you have the same song as part of different albums then, in my opinion, these aren't really duplicates. Personally I wouldn't throw away some of the tracks on the Beatles "White Album" because I also have them on the "Blue Album".
For some more thoughts, including tips on how to manually delete duplicates if you have the patience, see this post. It's written from a PC perspective so you may need to use Option or Cmd instead of Shift or Ctrl.

The problem you may face with pursuing automated approaches is that the dupicate check occurs on the basis of song title alone. Automating the removal would have it choosing between different versions of the same song - when you may actually want both since they aren't true duplicates.
Examples:
One is "unplugged" and the other is electric
One is the studio version and the other is live
One is the original version and the other is remastered
One approach to delte multiple ones is to change the sort to being a manner that makes true duplicates more evident. (Album by artist, or date, date added, or whatever makes sense for your library.)
Then you could paint multiple ones and delete them at once. (Select the first one, hold the shift key, then select the last one that you want to delete. Then press the delete or backspace key)
You will likely have to do this more than once, but it should/may reduce the amount of manual actions while avoiding the concern of songs misperceived as duplicate being deleted.

Can I delete my iphoto library?

Folks, I upgraded from Iphoto to Aperture. Ive moved the Iphoto library to Aperture...can I safely delete the iphoto library now so as to save space on my hard disk? thank you.

As Kimmba alluded to it depends on how you imported the masters into Aperture.
When you run File->Import->iPhoto Library you are given a few choices of what to do with the masters. The most import option is Store Files:, this determines where the masters go.
If you chose In the Aperture Library then it should be safe to delete the iPhoto Library.
I always recommend to new users that they keep there iPhoto Library for some period of time after switching just to make sure everything went as expected. This way if you should need to, you could wipe the Aperture library and start from scratch (except of course for any new images imported only into Aperture). It's very rare that you get the desired Aperture structure right on the first attempt and while you could rearrange things in Aperture it sometimes is easier to just start over.
Of course it's always best to make a backup of the iPhoto Library and keep it safe before deleting it no matter what else you do.
