MANUALLY GET A CD DISK OUT OF DRIVE when SOFTWARE is missing...
My iMac is missing some extensions needed for the CD/DVD internal drive. I put a CD in by mistake to re-install
the software for an EXTERNAL CD drive, forgetting I don't have
the extensions needed to use my iMac internal CD drive.
So now I cannot "tell" the machine to eject my CD.
Is there a way to manually get it out, or....?
All replies appreciated! - Leslie

Keep getting errors that Disk Space is full when it is not
This past week I have had problems with my mac. It started last week when it stopped letting me save files to my hard drive along with running very slow. I still had around 100gb left on my drive at this time. I checked my disk through disk utility and all was fine. The problem persisted and because I have projects due this week I went ahead and backed up my important files and wiped my drive and reinstalled OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.5. The problem still persists and applications are hit and miss at opening. When I try to save a file I occasionally get the disk space error. When I try to install bundled applications such as Illustrator or After Effects they always fail. I installed clamx to see if there was any vicious malware, clams would not update its virus definitions and would always fail when attempting too. I finally got it to update and the scan found nothing. I went to disk utility and when I verified disk I got "Problem with EFI partition" I repaired the disk and still issues persist. The Macbook Pro is only a year and 3 weeks old. I had to use a friends computer to post. Any help would be greatly appreciated here.

One year old Macbook Pro with 256 GB SSD. Not power users by any stretch as it's not a work computer (family computer for 3 kids). We've enjoyed iPhoto and iMovie to process a single flash drive with~32 GB of pictures and movies. 90% of the kids work is done through Google docs so it's not like we've got 200 GB of docs.
As we become more photo enthusiasts, today's project was to explore LIghtroom, PhotoNinja and Nik Effects suite. I installed PhotoNinja, Nik, and Lr. As I begin importing a 32 GB flash card into Lr, the system crashes and I am unable to log in using my account. I boot it in safe mode, and delete Lr, I get about 6 GB of available storage back.
1. Why am I almost out of storage? This device is designed for graphics professionals. What did I do to burn up 246 GB of storage for casual use?
2. Is there master app that allows me to see which users are using how much storage? Is it possible my daughter burned this much storage loading movies from iTunes? Is it 5x iPhoto that is killing us with 2 photo users and 1 moderate user?
3. What can I do to install Lr in the future so that I don't hit this wall? I thought Lr served a portfolio mgmt role, and I can't believe that it died after downloading <1,000 images.Did you ever use iPhoto? If you did and you copied images to your hard drive and then imported them into iPhoto, iPhoto made a second copy of them. This might be where all you disk space went, or part of it.
The best thing to do now is get an external drive and install OS X on that then start the system from that external and move some of your files to the external. Then you might be able to boot back into the internal drive.
To install OS X on an external drive you'll need to boot the system from the Recovery HD. At startup hold down the Commadn + r keys. Have an external drive connected before you boot to the Recovery HD. Once in the Mac OS X Utilities use Disk Utility for format the external Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a partition table of GUID. Once you do that exit disk Utility and select Reinstall Mac OS X and point the install to the external drive. -
How do I get a mini disk out of my macbook pro?
In my infinite wisdom inserted a mini cd into my macbook pro. How can I get it out?
Put double sided tape on a business card, tilt your laptop on the side and pull out the disk with the card while pressing eject... It works, I just had to do it.

How to get a mini-dvd out of drive
I'm sure this has been asked dozens of times, but I can't find it on here---maybe someone can point me in the right direction. My kids put a mini-dvd from our camcorder into our slot-loading drive. I know this is a big no no, but is there any good way to get it out? Thanks.
The best you can hope for is to try and shake the disc out of the optical drive, but it's not likely to work. You'll need to take the computer in for service in order to get the disc safely removed.

Take out hard drives when recycling old G4?
My ancient G4 quicksilver no longer powers up and is not used any more. I want to take it to the dump but should I remove the hard drives first? Obviously I can't do anything to wipe them as it has no power.
If your sole reason for disposing of the Quicksilver is its inability to power ON, you could post a new Topic in the "Desktop Power Mac" Forum and ask for suggestions from other Quicksilver owners. There have been many instances when a "dead" Mac has been revived by replacement of the internal battery (3.6-volt ½AA lithium) on the motherboard. If you'd care to use the G4 again, the battery is an inexpensive fix to try, typically costing less than $8 USD.

Dear all,
What should I do? I keep getting the "startup disk full" message even when I already moved all my files and documents to an external hard disk.
Thanks a heap. For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size with the largest at the top. It may take a few minutes for ODS to finish scanning your files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal. -
I have a seagte back up plus. I pulled my hard drive out without ejecting it and now finder dosn't find it but I see it in disk utility (although I cant repair permissions) How do I get finder to recognize my hard drive after pulling my hard drive out without eject...? Is my hard drive dead? I see it in disk utility... Can I get my info back?
Thank you so much for any helpIn Disk Utility you need to see a volume or partition in addition to the drive.
If all you see is the drive, then when you ejected it you proably corrupted the volume or partition on the drive.
If that is true then your chances of getting anything back are slim at best.
About the only thing I know that might work not is to send the disk out to a service for recovery. This is going to cost like $$$$.
Is the data worth that much?

How do I get a disk out of the drive on a PowerPC G5 that won't boot

It wouldn't boot ... multi-lingual restart screen with a message that a driver might be missing

without the disk the machine boots to the old system
how do I get the disk out ... then what do I do to clean the machine to sell it?Niel,
thank you. Incredibly easy when you have the right combination.

this (I'm pretty sure) is the original disk that came with the machine (10.4.9) -
How do I get a stuck cd out of my drive
How do I get a stuck CD out of my drive on my macbook. It shows up when I first start my computer up. I press eject and it makes some sounds, but doesn't eject. The CD then is gone from my desktop. I have to re-start my computer to see the CD and try again to eject.
Anyone have a solution here ??Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.
