Manually managing videos but not music?

My laptop hard drive is almost full due to the fact that I have little space left for music and video after all my programs and files are factored in. Now, I am planning to purchase an external hard drive to put all of my videos on but I was wondering if I removed them from their location on my laptop if they would be removed from iTunes (as in, iTunes can't find them). I want my laptop to automatically update my music, but I want to manually manage the video on it. Is this possible? The only option iTunes gives me is to manually manage both.

I don't think you understood what I was talking about... I want to take the videos off of my laptop hard drive and move them to an external hard drive, but I want the music to automatically sync when I plug in my iPod, but the videos to be put on manually by me because they won't be located on my hard drive with the music.

  • Airplay works for phots and video, but not music on 2nd gen touch

Upgraded to 4.2 on 2nd gen touch. I can send photos and videos/movies to AppleTV via Airplay, but not music. I can select AppleTV when playing a song on Touch and the music stops playing from Touch, but never plays from AppleTV. Audio works just fine for movies sent to AppleTV.
    Anyone else experience this?
Support told me that this feature is not supported on 2nd gen Touch and I'd have to buy a new Touch. The Apple website says feature is supported. A second call to support and they said it is. ?????

Im having a similar problem where after a period of time I can get neither my iPhone 4 or iTouch 2G to see the Air Tunes speakers on my Airport Express base station. Always works fine from my computer's iTunes though. What I found works is powering off and rebooting the phone / iTouch (not just locking it). When it reboots go to your music and maybe you'll see the Apple TV or Airport Express icon appear now. Works for me anyways. After a while, they will "forget" and I need to reboot the phone again to find it. I think there are kinks in the 4.2 iOS that need to be sorted out.

  • Unable to synchronise videos, but not music automatically

I have a large collection of music that resides outside of my itunes library, and I only want to put it on the iPod; The itunes library choice is not one I would like to make, because I do not have much space left for the music. What can I do?

iTunes can only add content to a device if it is "known" to the library. If you make sure "Copy to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" is not checked under Edit > Preferences >Advanced then you can add content to the library from where it happens to be rather than creating copies in the media folder.
I don't recall if syncing or manual managment of music and videos have always been tied together but if not they certainly have been for some time. Either you manually manage the device or set it up to sync automatically with selected playlists and specific content.

  • Apple TV streaming videos but not music from iTunes

My ATV (latest updates) will stream video (and audio from that video) from my itunes on my MacBook Pro, but no music from the music section of itunes. I'm not on a VPN or anything.  I can see the ATV option from itunes and I can select it for a split second, but then it defaults back to the computer speakers with no sound ever going to ATV.  My ipad and iphone stream perfectly well to my AppleTV.  My accounts and home sharing are all set up OK. Music is currently checked and playing on Mac. Why will it stream video (and the audio that is with the video), but no songs?
    Thanks for any suggestions!

If your ATV is connected by wi-fi, switch it to an Ethernet cable and see if that solves the problem. If the wi-fi NIC is failing it will start dropping the network connection at random and that will cause it to drop out of iTunes.

  • I've upgraded my 4th gen ipod to ios6.  I manually manage videos and music.  My video playlists(which I can access via the music icon) are there but my videos aren't.  I can see the videos when tapping the videos icon so I know they are there. Any ideas?

I've upgraded my 4th gen ipod to ios6.  I manually manage videos and music as it is easier to access my videos through playlists which I access through the music icon.  Since upgrading to ios6 the playlists are there but when I go into them the individual videos aren't visible.  I know they are there because I can access them through the videos icon.  Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

Does it still turn on to the Apple logo?
If it does, turn it on and hold it up to your ear. If it's making a clicking sound, try hitting it easy a few times on the side. The idea is the hdd is "stuck" and hitting it loosens it. Just don't do it too hard to break it.

The reference article in question says "Manually manage music and videos" but I only have the option to "Manually manage videos" via the iPad on iTunes.  How do I actually manage music?
    Edit: classic Apple.

If you post from a a question from the bottom of an article's page then you should get its reference, e.g. HT1535 in your case, on the post's title. The ability to edit you post only lasts for 15 minutes and allows you to correct/add extra info.
I get the 'manually manage music and videos' tockbox as described on that article. If you only 'videos' then are you using iTunes Match on your iPad ? I don't use it but I've seen posts that say having it enabled on a device can affect the syncing of music.

  • I have a new mac and want to sync my phone to the iTunes on it, but it won't let me manually manage without deleting all music on the phone already from another iTunes. is there a way around this?

I have a new mac and want to sync my phone to the iTunes on it, but it won't let me manually manage without deleting all music on the phone already from another iTunes. is there a way around this?

    The best solution:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
An alternative which is really not what you should have to do, or the way it is intended to be done, if you properly manage your computer and backups:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
Sync transfer is one way, computer to device, matching the device content to the content on the computer (except purchased content as mentioned above).  For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will probably have to use third party commercial software unless you have an older model iPod. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):
    - Senuti - http://www.fadingred.com/senuti/

Do not regard your i-device as a reliable unique storage for your media. It is not a backup device and everything is structured around you maintaining your media on a computer which is itself backed up.

  • Home sharing is working fine for musics and videos but not for apps. What is wrong?

Home sharing is working fine for musics and videos but not for apps. What is wrong?

i had the same issue as everyone here after upgrading to itunes 10.x.  vista could see xp home share.  ipod touch could see xp home share.
neither could see vista home share.
after several hours of authorizing de-authorizing, rebooting router etc, i knew it had to be a firewall thingy with vista as xp was working fine
i went to this article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2553 and followed the instructions.  itunes was already in my vista exception list.  on a hunch i deleted the itunes exception and followed the steps to add it again and boom it worked!! i could now see my vista machine from my ipod touch immediately.
something must have screwed up the firewall exception on the upgrade to itunes 10.x
it worked for me, i hope this helps others

  • Being allowed to import music to itunes but not music videos?

Why can you import music you own to your itune collection but not music videos that you own?

You can, you just need to make sure that your videos are in a Quicktime-compatible format (.m4v or .mp4 work best), then drag the files into your iTunes library. You can then find them in the Videos section and showing the information of the file will allow you to indicate that it is a music video (as opposed to a movie or TV show) and that will allow you to access the video in the music library.

  • ITunes does only sync photo's but not music and video. Help please

I have loaded ios5 on both my iPad and my iPhone4. For about a week, all worked fine and i restored my music, video's and photo's.  However since about a week,  music and viceo's are removed from the iPhone. That was after the change from summer- to winter-time. And iTunes does not want to sync them back to the phone.  On my iPad all is still there. I looked at my settings and the only difference between the iPad and the iPhone is that on the iPhone i see a switch for iTunes Match, but that does not work in my country yet.  When i look in the left column of iTunes i see my music marked under the musicdirectory of my iPhone,  but with a sych mark. ( the little circle).  So i can add and remove photo's,  but not music or video items.  Has anyone an idea what to do?
By the way, all my other stuff(agenda, notes etc.) are synched thru iCloud.

Are you viewing on 'Videos' or did you find it in your music list?

  • "Manually Manage Videos" & "Sync Tones" at the same time?

So, I wan't to sync my ring and text tones manually to my iPad from iTunes as I have some tones that I did not buy from iTunes. I also want to "manually manage videos" synced to my iPad. However, it seems that iTunes will NOT let me choose both at the same time. Am I missing something? Why can't you do both at the same time? Are tones considered video (they have a .m4r extension)?
    Thanks in advance.

While I appreciate the link, it doesn't exactly explain why you can't automatically sync Tones while manually managing videos. When you connect an iOS device (that also has iTunes Match enabled) to iTunes 11, the "Manually Manage..." checkbox does not say music as well. It only allows you to "Manually Manage Video", since music is syncing over the cloud via iTunes Match. Thusly, this link does not take into account iTunes Match.
For whatever reason, iTunes must see Tones as part of video, I guess.
    But thanks anyways.

  • Manually Manage video

With songs, you can manually manage them. Transfering songs to your ipod by dragging them. You can then delete them from your computer to save space and they will still stay on your ipod. Why can I not do this with video? I have 10 GB worth of movies on my ipod and i dont have the room to spare on my computer. You can only automatically update video. Is there any way to do it manually? I need the diskspace.

    Right.
However, you cannot manually manage videos and automatically update songs.

If you haven't tried re syncing the apps using iTunes..
Connect the iPad to your computer. Select it under Devices left side of the iTunes window. Select Apps from the menu, make sure the boxes next to those apps are selected then click the Sync button bottom right side of the iTunes window.
