Manually mounting afp volume read-only

I have an automation server that will be accessing files on my servers. The account this server uses has access to all the files, and this can't be changed (long story). Is there a way to force an afp mount read-only? Is there a command line for making afp connections that I could "man"?

I wonder if With Sharepoints...

You could limit it to R/O, at least for certain Users/Groups?

  • Share a mounted AFP volume across user accounts on the same computer

    Hi all,
I have a Mac Mini with several attached disks (HFS+). I'm using it as a file server, to share these disks over my home network. I'm mounting these as AFP server volumes on a second computer (MacBook Pro). This all works fine. Both are running MacOS 10.6.2.
The problem is that my MacBook Pro has two user accounts, and when I mount AFP volumes under one user, the other user can't access them. It seems that mounted AFP volumes are assigned read/write permissions for only the user that mounted them.
Ideally, I'd like to mount a volume once, and have it accessible from both user accounts. I've tried changing permissions in the AFP volume's Get Info window, but the changes don't take effect.
Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks!!

  • Backup Volume Read Only error 99% solution

After about 2 months of the "Back Up Volume Read Only - select different volume..." issue, I found a 99% solution - or perhaps a fluke (I'm a mac newbie).
My computer would back up about 1/2 of the 20gig's of files before failing. After removing the apostrophe, erasing, etc. I went to options and chose most of my files as "do not back up". What do you know, it finally worked.
Then I went back and added the rest of the files back to the backup -- didn't work again.
Long story short, after a few, fun filled hours, I triangulated down to one file in Documents (a circus pony notebook file) that will cause my backup to fail. If that file is in there, no backup. Take it out, no problem. btw, I have other notebook files that backup fine.
Anyone have any suggestions besides leaving that file out forever?

  • Back up Volume Read only

My Time Capsule ha been working reasonably well for 3 months but I am now getting a message which says that my back-up volume is read only. Any suggestions?

    romor,
“The Backup Volume is Read Only”
For some this was cleared up with a simple reboot. For others it was not. Try the following:
    *Cold Reboot the Hard Disk*
First, unmount the drive from the desktop.
    Power it down.
Unplug it from the wall socket.
    Disconnect it from the computer.
    Wait 10 minutes.
Plug it back in to the wall socket.
Connect it back into the computer.
    Power it back up.
When it reappears on the desktop try backing up again. This simple step has worked for some in this situation. Regrettably, most who experience this error have had to reformat their Time Machine hard disks. So prepare for this eventuality.
If the above doesn’t work, let us know. We may have other options if you have access to another Mac.
*Use “Get Info” to Change Permissions on 3rd-Party Hard Disks*
Highlight the external hard disk on your desktop.
Go up to the "File" menu and select "Get Info".
At the bottom is "Sharing & Permissions".
Click the little lock icon in the lower right and enter your Admin Password.
Are you (Username) listed in the Name column? If not, add your user account with the tiny “+” button.
What does it say under "Privilege" beside your name?
If it is "Read only" change it to "Read & Write".
    Close "Get Info".
    Now try to backup.
    *By-Pass USB Hub*
If you are using a USB hub, try by-passing the hub and connecting the external hard disk directly into your Mac.
    *For Time Capsule Users*
Unfortunately, your going to have to reformat the TCs hard disk. While there are some convoluted procedures to recover from this error, for the average user they simply are not worth the time and effort. Just reformat and start over.
    *Reformat the TC Hard Disk*
You can reformat the hard disk in the Time Capsule.
Go to Airport Utility --> Manual Setup --> Disks --> Highlight "Time Capsule Disk" on the left --> Click "Erase" on the right.
Rename the disk and select the level secure erasure. You're done and ready to begin backing up again.
I would suggest connecting the TC directly to your Mac via ethernet. Your initial full backup will go much faster and doesn't fail nearly as often as trying to do it wirelessly. “If you have an Ethernet cable, you can perform your first backup to your Time Capsule via Ethernet; this will allow for the fastest initial backup especially with client computers that use 802.11b or 802.11g.” http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1176
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Auto mount externals as read only

I'm setting up a small network for a friend who has a small business. He wants the workstations to force any and all external drives to be mounted read only but I can't think of a way to force this to happen automatically.
All computers are eMacs running 10.4.9.
Anyone know of a way to do this?

Essentially what he is worried about is that at some point he may have an employee who brings in an iPod or flash drive and connects it their workstation. He's not against the employees copy music files, images, etc off the iPod and onto the computer, but he does not want them to be able to copy possible sensitive information onto the iPod or flash drive.
I'm somewhat familiar with mount and the syntax for it, but have never used the -fur flags. If I'm reading the man pages correct:
-f revokes the write status of a drive
-u allows an already mounted drive to be changed so is needed in order for -f to be able to do it's thing
-r sets the drive as read-only so not even root can write to it
I'm familiar enough with fstab to be able to edit it to mount a known disk as read-only. Is there a way to do it if I don't know the volume name?
For example, I notice that on my iBook my own iPods mount as:
    /dev/disk2s2 on /Volumes/POD ALMIGHT
    /dev/disk3s2 on /Volumes/MY IPOD
So on the eMacs we want this to work on, I assume flash drives and iPods will similarly show as diskXs# with X being a number 2 or higher, and # varying depending on the partitioning scheme of the device. If that's correct, is there some way to force anything that mounts to /dev/diskXs# as read only?
If it isn't correct, then where's my logic failing me?

  • Mount AFP volume error [-5002 (AFP Bad UAM)]

After reading many complaints about AFP in Leopard, I just have to ask again if anybody has a workaround for the “Connection Failed” error -5002 when trying to mount an AFP volume in Leopard. Does anybody have any more info about fixes, workarounds or info about this problem with Leopard? And what is UAM??

    UAM == user authentication method
Each AFP server, depending on its version, will have a set of UAMs that it supports by default. These are essentially authentication capabilities such as "no authentication", "cleartext passwords", "kerberos auth", etc. There are several others.
That error code would imply that your client is trying to authentication in a way that the server doesn't know how to handle. Is this another Leopard box you are trying to mount?

  • HT4538 10.6.8 does not mount afp file share, only mounts to parent folder

This article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4538 states that 10.6.7 and later can mount files from a url such as afp://myserver.mydomain.com/Sharepoint/Folder/File.txt
However in 10.6.8 instead of opening the file, only the parent folder is mounted.
Was this issue not truely solved or are there some files that might need to be purged ?

Maybe I don't understand how you are producing this behavior, but I can't reproduce it.
I have mounted an AFP volume. I have gone a few folders deep and created a folder X in some directory Y. I move folder X to the trash. I get the warning that it will be deleted immediately. I approve. Folder X disappears and I am still looking in folder Y (with X gone, now, of course).
I checked this in each of list view, icon view and column view, with the same result each time.
Am I not doing what you are doing?
If I am doing what you are doing, there is something peculiar about your server, I guess.

  • External Volume read only on Mac OS X server 10.5

My mac OS X Server 10.5.8 is having a FC volume is read only ,
What could br the issue ??

Same issue here. I even tried to import the cert directly into keychain. I did get the certificate to show up in server admin with the correct signed info, but when I assigned a service to the cert. It actually was handing out the old unsigned cert, so I removed it to try again. Now I cannot get the cert back in server admin at all, just in Keychain under SYSTEM. The self-signed certs only show up under My Keychains... It appears also that Server Admin will only see the certs that are located in MyKeychains. Anyone have any luck?

  • Time Capsule backup failed, volume read-only, can't delete

I've only been using Time Machine and Time Capsule for 2 months. This week it stopped working. First error message:
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
Checking the Time Machine preferences, "Last backup" would read "backup failed"
When I got this error, all the wireless functions went offline, even thought the TC light was still green.
I would shut down, shut down the Time Capsule, shut off my modem reboot everything in order.
I would come back online, but after about 20 minutes to 1.5 hours into the next backup, same thing would happen again.
    Next error message:
"Disk repair. The disk 'Backup of [my computer]' was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must backup your data and reformat the drive."
Then: "Time Machine Error: The backup volume is read only. To select a different volume ... Time Machine preferences ... "
I spoke to someone at Apple, who sent me the Time Machine Troubleshooting page:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3275?viewlocale=en_US
    Steps I went through:
    1. updated my system software
    2. updated the TC firmware to 7.4.1
    3. dragged the sparsebundle to DiskUtility. It took a while (more than an hour?) but said the disk could not be repaired. When I tried again, the repair function wouldn't run.
    4. tried to delete the sparsebundle, but it would choke at almost the end, sometimes it would just crash the finder, sometimes say "Sorry, an unexpected error occurred," sometimes "Operation cannot be completed because the item 'bands' is in use." I even tried to Stuff the bundle with 'delete original' checked, but the stuffing, after about 15 hours, jammed near the end (stuffed 20 gigs of 35 gigs).
    5. tried to reselect the TC, and run backup anyways ... now it can't find the volume, back to the error messages and crashing Finder
    6. checked password in Keychain, all ok.
    Now what??
Do I use Airport Utility to erase it? At least TC is still showing up there. Or press the rest button on the back of the Time Capsule to reset to factory defaults?
I've resigned myself to losing my backups. Now I would just like to get it up and running again.
    In hopes,
    Linda

Yes, open Airport Utility and erase the drive. Once the sparsebundle is corrupted beyond repair there's little more you can do. However, do not reset the TC. Doing so will not erase the drive, but it will remove any custom configurations you may have setup for the router. Only if that part of the TC is also misbehaving should you use the reset button.

  • Oracle VM x86_64 causes NFS Mount to go Read Only

I need a bit of help. I have a 64-bit installation of Oracle VM on a Linux 5.8 server. I have a mount point (/u99) which is shared with two servers (the other server is also a 64-bit VM server). Every time I attempt to write something to this disk it goes to read only. My network guys unmount it, run fsck on the disk partition and then remount it only to have it go read only again and again. This initially started happening when I was attempting to do an RMAN backup but now it happens when I just routinely write something to the partition. It is mounted just as the other non-shared mounts are mounted only it is shared. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Are you talking about Virtualbox or Oracle VM 3.1.1?
    If its Oracle VM 3.1.1
You shouldn't be mounting NFS shares directly from the Oracle VM server. The VM Manger should used to create NFS repositories.
If you're talking about Oracle 5.8 VM guest on a Oracle VM server.... then I had a similar problem a while back. The VM guest was doing a setgid on the file created. I ended up setting "Disable setuid/setgid file creation" on the storage side so the NFS wouldn't allow it.

  • Back up volume read only error

Was working perfectly, but now this error. using dick utility could not repair. . date stored on external disk. Attemped to erase disk but that failed with message about timeout. Any other options???

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Did Disk Utility have a message about '...task reported failure...'? If yes, it means it can't fix the problem. Solution is either to try Disk Warrior, which will work if it's a data structure issue, but can fail if there is a hardware issue, or replace the failed/failing hard drive hardware.

  • Fssnap on a Read-Only mounted volume?

    Hello,
Is it possible to create a snapshot of a volume that is mounted read only ?
My guess is that it isn't...
    Here is the scenario.
I have a mail server who's primary /mail parition is a volume on our new iSCSI SAN.
I have a backup server who mounts the same SAN volume read only.
I want to let the backup server backup that /mail volume to another volume, or to tape however...
In the past, when I attempt to perform a regular ufsdump w/o any fssnap I often run into errors and the dump is inconsistent.
DUMP: bread: dev_seek error: Error 0
DUMP: Warning - block 1922882290 is beyond the end of `/dev/md/rdsk/d20'
I'm finding this to still be the case, even though the volume is on the SAN and is mounted read only.
Are those errors indicitative of a major problem or are they simply due to the fact that the volume is actively being written to and read from?
From the mail server, when I run ufsdump after running fssnap on the /mail volume, I don't see these errors, however the load on the mail server severely increases to the point where users begin to experience problems and slowdowns.
From the backup server, if I can fssnap that read-only /mail SAN /volume then perhaps I can get reliable backups?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    --Raf

Here is a process I use all the time. And Yes you can fssnap a live system.
This artical is for x86 but you can adjust it to work for sparc.

  • Kinit mounts root filesystem as read only [HELP][solved]

    hello
I've being messing around with my mkinitcpio trying to optimize my boot speed, i removed some of the hooks at the beginning i couldn't boot, but then now i can boot but the root filesystem mounts as read only, i tried everything my fstab looks fine, / exists with defaults i tried to mount it referencing by it's uuid or by it's name and i get the same results, it mounts the filesystem as root only all the time no mather what i do.
There is not logs since i started playing with mkinitcpio, or anything i searched everywhere in this forum and around the internet, and i can't find any solution that would work, i restored all the hooks and modules on mkinitcpio and the result it's still the same. i also changed the menu.lst in grub to vga=773 but that's about it.
Can anyone help with this please i can't seem to boot properly.

    Hello
Basically what happens it's that it loads all the uDev events then the loopback, it mounts the root read only, then when it checks filesystems it says
    /dev/sda4: clean, 205184/481440 files, 1139604/1920356 blocks [fail]
    ************FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED****************
    * Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root *
    * file system is currently mounted read-only. To remount *
    * it read-write: mount -n -o remount,rw / *
    * When you exit the maintenance shell the will *
    * reboot automatically. *
Now what bugs me its that i can do that mount -n -o remount,rw / with no problems and when i do
    e2fsck -f /dev/sda4
it doesn't return any errors just says that 0.9 non continuous.
none of this makes sense to me!! thats why i though that the problem could be coming from mkinitcpio or something
    any ideas
Thanks for your help, btw thanks for the quick reply

  • Ipod now mounts as read only filesystem.

had to re-install base, as I ran amuk with mixing testing and non testing repos.
after re-install, the only packages from testing I installed were amorak-base and it's dependancies, and libgpod.
it recognizes my ipod when I plug it in, but mounts it as read only.  Even though my user has write access to the mount point.  Ipod is new classic, and I have followed the guide on amarok.  ipod is formated hfs+.  It was working great, until I re-installed the base system.  Everything I had put on the ipod under linux is still there, so the database shouldn't be borked.
any help?  I modprobed hfs, hfsplus, and still read only

The "problem" is libgpod. There is a new version in testing, it will be moved to extra this weekend. With the old version of libgpod it seems, that you write the songs to your ipod, but they don't appear after plugging it off. From the wiki of libgpod:
Starting with the 2007 generation of iPods, libgpod needs an additional configuration step to correctly modify the iPod content. libgpod
needs to know the so-called iPod "firewire id", otherwise the iPod won't recognize what libgpod wrote to it and will behave as if it's empty.
Wait until the new libgpod is moved this weekend, and follow the steps here: http://gtkpod.wikispaces.com/Sysinfo+File#ClassicNano3g
    Then it should work again.
