Manually Moving VMS from HOST to HOST *WITH* Shared SAS Storage

Hi,
Environment will be 2 Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V servers.
They will be connect via shared SAS. These are two identical IBM servers with shared SAS storage
I am hoping to eliminate using MS Clustering of the Hyper-V servers just to keep things straight forward.
In the event, I had a complete failure of one of the physical server Hyper V hosts, I was hoping be able to manually add/import (not sure what the terminology is here) and run the virtual machines on the second host until the first is repaired.
If there is third party software that can do this, I would entertain it.
In VMware (I had two hosts and would manually remove them from inventory on one server and add them to a second server).
Ideally, if I could keep both Hyper-V hosts in a Windows Workgroup and as vanilla as possible.
Thanks in Advance,
G

Hi,
Sorry for the late reply. I have been researching all I can. And thanks to all for your patience and help!
Let's start with the hardware to help paint the picture:
2 @ IBM X3550 M4
1 @ IBM V3700
The two X3550's are going to be connected via 6GB SAS Cards (2/server for redundacy)
Current environment (residing on VMWare with older IBM Xseries servers DS3524 connect via SAS connections) 40 users total.
Windows servers are:
1 @ SBS 2011 (One and only AD/PDC)
2 @ Windows 2008 Servers that are CRM (these are Windows Member Servers)
5 @ Windows 2003 servers that are going to be replace with Windows 2008 Servers (these are Windows Member servers) (low usage servers)
Just to recap:
The current environment running VMware 4.1 has both IBM X3500 servers able to see a single 1.5 TB lun (SAS connected) presented by the DS3524.
Currently, in VMware, I can see the same LUN on both servers. I have all my VM's on HOSTA, if HOSTA should suffer a system board failure, I manually connect to HOSTB with the VMware client and add the VMs that I can see on the shared LUN
and add them to HOSTB.
My understanding is that its strongly recommend that my DC (not sure if they are implying PDC or BDC) on a physical server. My hesitation is now I have to introduce a DC to SBS 2011 and manage a physical server and deal with with SBS 2011's quirks.
So I was hoping that if I presented a LUN to both my HyperV hosts (In a Workgroup), and created on my VMs on hostA, if something went very bad with HOSTA, I could connect to HOSTB and "Import" them and manually start the VMs, especially since
SBS 2011 is sensitive.
The client is okay with some downtime, so if the process is supported and works, then I am okay with doing the work.
Clustering or even Replicas will add:
Complexity to the environment
Patching needs to be carefully planned as it would not look good to have to failover due to a Windows update on the primary host.
The tech's that support that environment will now need to know about Clustering and/or Replication ontop of the SAN stuff
I am looking at Veeam, Double-Take to see if they can work with 2 @ 2012 Hyper-V hosts configured in a Workgroup.
The SBS 2011 is the "hinge" that will make or break the success of this project. I personally love the way 2012 Hyper-V works, but it would be great if a physical server outside of the HyperV hosts was not required.
Thanks !

• Moving VMs from Standalone Hyper-V to Hyper-v Failover Cluster

Hello All.................I need to move Virtual Machines from Standalone Hyper-V based on Windows Server 2012 R2 to a Hyper-V Failover Cluster based on Windows Server 2012 R2.
- The VMs OS is Windows Server 2012 R2
- Applications installed on VMs are SCCM, SCOM, SharePoint, etc.
1. I am looking for a Checklist that I can run through and move them. To make sure I do not miss out anything.
2. Would a downtime be required in this scenario while the VM is being moved?
3. What requires special attention in this scenario?

Thanks for the reply.
So, I do not need to do anything and just simply add both the cluster and standalone into VMM and then simply use the Move option. Please, confirm if I have understood it correct.
Yes. But be carefull. First shut down your VM's
if possible and configure them in such a way they don't automatically start. If you install the SCVMM Agent, some Hyper-V related services are restarted, when some VMs start during that process you system may stall. I have seen this multipe times.
There is another dirty option that worked of us perfectly. Export the VMs. Then import those VMs to a local disk on one Hyper-V Server. Refresh the Hyper-V Server and Virtual Machines on that Hyper-V Server. Give it a few minutes. Then do
a Live Migration while at the same time makeing it "Highly Available" by moving it to your CSV. Works flawlessly. DO NOT IMPORT THE VMS TO YOUR CSV, otherwise you can't change it to "Highly Avaiable" unless you have
two CSVs. Importing it straight to a CSV does not make them Highly Available.

• Moving VMs From One Hyper-v 2012 R2 to Another Hyper-v 2012 R2

Hi everyone, was hoping for some help in something I am confused about
Currently I have SERVER1 running hyper-v 2012 R2
I want to move all my VMs (around 20) to SERVER2 also running Hyper-v 2012 R2
But I am confused on the best way to do this
1) should I just click on "MOVE" on SERVER1 to move to SERVER2?
2) Should I do an export and then import
3) should I setup replication from Server1 to Server2 and then do a failover?
4) or should I shut the VM down, copy the VHDX file and then create a new VM and use that VHDX
I just want to be cautious and use the best method to ensure it goes smooth and not worry about any corruption. Can anyone offer some advice?

It all depends on your environment and your current Hyper-V configuration.
I asume both servers are domain-member of the same domain and don't use SCVMM. If so, then make sure you do the following:
First enable the "Live Migration" feature in the Hyper-V settings on both Hyper-V Servers.
Make sure both Hyper-V Servers have a vSwitch configured with the same display name and connectivity. They must be somewhat identical, but not everything. As long as the connectivity is the same.
Make sure you have a location to store the VM files on SERVER2.
Then do a Live Migration from SERVER1 to SERVER2, follow the wizard. By using the Hyper-V Manager console on SERVER1.
NOTE1: Without computer certificates and Kerberos configuration on your Live Migration settings you cannot initiate a Live Migration from the Hyper-V Manager cconsole on SERVER2. With the default configuration, you have to login on (or connect
to) SERVER1 en then initiate the Live Migration.
NOTE2: If you can't configure the vSwitches the same. Then you have to shut down the VMs and do a Quick Migration. Then re-configure the VM network properties and power on the VMs.
I hope this information will help you goin on. If you need more detailed information use the following link:

• Moving images from library to library WITH Faces information

Ok.
iPhoto 09/faces
Can someone out there tell me, first off, is it even possible to move photos from one library to another library WITH all the Faces effort I've put in on those photos (say from my default library on my hard drive to another person's library on an external hard drive)?
That way they don't have to be rescanned and then I have to go through and correct the crappy scanning effort that the program did all over again.
I tried exporting/importing, straight copy, etc. with no dice.
I don't want to keep having to re-correct all the faces in images I transfer between libraries.
"Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi....You're my only hope!"

For folks out there here is the results of Terrence's suggestion (which was a good one BTW, I don't want to dump on him - it was good thinking on his part! Thanks Terrence).
iPhoto Lib Manager still ***** (on my system anyway - iMac OSX 10.5.6).
I installed the thing and tried moving 1000 photos with faces info organized nicely - no dice - it crapped out.
First make sure all the permissions are set properly and the library mounts automatically (under the options). Then it will at least ATTEMPT to copy everything (also edit prefs to reflect all the metadata that goes with the photos like faces info, dates, desc. etc).
But while thing appear to go well, it craps out at the end leaving you stymied. It re-scans the imported images and the faces data does not come through in the end despite it's trying to do so.
I tried it with 80 photos, just to make sure I wasn't trying to fit 20lbs of manure into a 10lb bag. Same story with the smaller transfer
If I go any smaller, I may as well have used the public version (free) which limits you to 20 at a time.
So bottom line - according to my experience - if you and someone else have the same photos in your separate libraries and want to share the effort one of you puts into organizing faces info - you're hooped/screwed/pooched!
Nada - diddly - bupkiss!
VERY DISAPPOINTING! Both the iPhoto 09 AND the failed (but valiant) attempt by iPhoto Lib Man.
Should've stuck with iLife 08 and lived with it...sigh.

• Moving user from OU to OU with modrdn fails

Hi All,
I'm trying to implement the followin scenario:
A user is created in the Actice Directory when the DN is as follows:
DN=CN=%MSKEYVALUE%,OU=%DEPARTMENT%,%$rep.LDAP_STARTING_POINT%
Now I want to implement a pass that moves the user if his department changed.
I tried doing so with the modrdn changetype, but it just wouldn't budge.
I created a job with the following passes:
From LDAP (to a table in the IDS):
objectGUID objectGUID
sAMAccountname sAMAccountname
To IDS
MSKEYVALUE %sAMAccountname%
AD_GUID %objectGUID%
To LDAP
DN <GUID=%AD_GUID%>
changetype modrdn
newdn CN=%MSKEYVALUE%
deleteoldrdn 1
newsuperior OU=%DEPARTMENT%,%$rep.LDAP_STARTING_POINT%
The first 2 passes work fine, when it comes to the thirs, I get the following error:
putNextEntry failed storing<GUID=To v?M??Y??)??&gt+
Now if I specify the full DN of the user like so:
DN CN=%MSKEYVALUE%,OU=%DEPARTMENT%,%$rep.LDAP_STARTING_POINT%
putNextEntry failed storingCN=P0003312,OU=1000,OU=IDM,DC=QANESS,DC=COM
I tried encoding the GUID in the first pass to HEX and removing the prefix, but no difference. What is this putNextEntry function and why does it fail?
Thanks in advance,
Eric Labiner

Ok, so paying even closer attention to spelling does help:
dn CN=User01
changetype modRDN
newRDN CN=User01

• Why is apple moving away from the optical drive with the new Macbook Pro?

Now I know that they are still selling the Macbook Pro's with the optical drive, but why abandond the drive in the newest model? CD's, DVD's, and Blue-ray's are still big parts of our lives, why push people to swithch over to digital? I do not want to go out of my way to buy digital copies of my favorite movies, softwares, and games when apple stops selling the incase optical drive, nor do think it's practical to carry around an external drive?
Now I know this is a harder question to answer, but why does it make the product better? Does this make the product more efficient? Is it more eco friendly? And please, be specific. Thanks.
- Pappyprops
P.S. I am not looking for a new computer, I have a 2011 Macbook Pro and love it!

Let me take your specific questions in order:
Why abandond the drive in the newest model?
There are a couple of reasons - I should note that I do not agree with them, just stating them. They want to pull more WinDoze 'ultrabook' shoppers over to the Mac line. That's a good thing. The impression is that lighter is better for that market so, they had to lose some weight. Also, Apple obviously believes that 'culturally', we will at some point fail to utilize physical mediums. I can tell you that is never going to happen. Not this year, not in ten years, not in 100 years. Now, before some smartass calls me on my inability to time travel, thus, my answer must be wrong, let me point out the obvious, which is that everything physical has a limit. DVDs do not last forever, but once encoded, they are a solid medium and billions exist. Thumb drives sound great in theory but in practice, despite being able to hold more data, they are no more solid than DVDs and it will be a long, long time before DVDs go away in the marketplace. People want to have physical mediums. Look at the iPad - great for reading books, but every survey shows people prefer actual books. Personally, I do not want to have to have 500 TB of space for all my media, nor do I want a company to have the ability to 'pull the plug' on my media - if it's not physically in my hands, they can do that. Same kind of reason there is opposition to the US healthcare bill; do you feel safer with your information in a folder in an office where the only real fear is fire or safer with your sensitve healthcare information on a drive somewhere where a hacker can wreak havoc? We are simply more comfortable with touch-and-feel.
Why does it make the product better?
It doesn't. IMHO. Now, the Retina screen is something better (I questioned this when I compared it to the anti-glare version of the prior incarnation, see prior post) but the SSD, while tiny, is technically safer and more solid for data (no moving parts, etc). But the lack of a DVD drive (I felt they should have gone the other way and provided at least an option for an internal BluRay Superdrive) does not, by itself, make it better. It makes it lighter, not better. For people who have one computer in their home for business and home use, an external drive will now be a must; the kids will want to watch their movies on roadtrips, etc. In my case, clients want DVDs, so an external is now a must for me, unfortunately.
Does this make the product more efficient?
I can't imagine it does in any way, but I'm not an engineer and, more importantly, I do not have one (yet). However, barring OS issues, loading a DVD vs. loading a movie in iTunes - loading the iTunes movie is faster, but it's obviously not better, since BluRay is much better image quality. Does the speed of the load make it more 'efficient'? That will be argued. I would say it is negligible. It may help airflow not having it in there, it obviously makes it lighter. But that does not automatically equate into more 'efficient'.
You also asked about eco-friendly and frankly, I think these machines are as eco as you can get and can't really be moreseo. MHO. I cannot imagine not having an optical drive makes it (net) any more eco friendly.

• Moving data from a dead G5 with serial ATA drives to a Mac Pro

I have a dead Power Mac dual 2.7 GHz G5. The red light on the edge of the mother board is on - and the machine does not start up. It has been dying slowly - the dual monitors turn off when I send an image to my printer.
It is under Apple Care - and today I purchased a Mac Pro quad 3.0 to replace it.
But - I need some files from the 2 drives in the dead dual 2.7 G5. They are 250GB Serial ATA; 7200 rpm drives.
From what I read here I cannot simply put the drives into the new Mac Pro.
So - I think that I need a firewire enclosure for the 250GB Serial ATA; 7200 rpm drives that will let me get out the data.
What is a good enclosure to do this - or is there another way? I can't send in the G5 for repair until I rescue the data from the drives and erase them.
Dual 2.7 G5, 2 intel iMacs, 1 MacBook, 1 Powerbook, 18 G4 Macs, 3 iPods Mac OS X (10.4.9) I teach Digital Photography clases - on Macs

You can install them - you just won't be able to boot
from them.
Don't move programs over - you should re-install them
instead.
That would be great. I don't need to boot from them - I just need to rescue some files.
Can I erase them from the Mac pro before I send the G5 off for service?

• How do I upgrade/update my iPhone 5 from my MacBook Air with limited space/storage

Hi There!
I am desperately trying to update my iPhone from my MacBook Air. But before I do so, I am trying to back up my iPhone. Every time I connect my iPhone to my laptop and hit 'manually back up', it stops with the following message:
"iTunes could not back up the iPhone because not enough free space is available on this computer."
I have a 60G laptop. I have deleted everything I had stored on this laptop (which was not much to begin with).
I then tried checking out my MacBook Air usage/storage by clicking Launchpad and going into 'System Information' then clicking on storage. It then showed me the following:
Volume Name: Macintosh HD
Capacity: 59.81GB
Available: 1.55GB
What i'm struggling to understand is what is taking up so much room/storage on my laptop? I barely use it and I save practically everything onto my hard drive.
Can anyone shed some light?
Kind Regards,
TeeStrang

Try a few things: 1) restart in safe mode (restart holding the shift key) and this will repair the drive (if need be) and trim/delete cache files. Restart normally.
2) if you use iPhoto or Aperture launch the program and then empty the trash folder of the program(s). Launch your Mail program and check out how much is in the Trash and Archive folders. You can delete the really old stuff if there is any.
3) Download omniDiskSweeper (free) to see what's on your drive. Be careful about deleting anything that isn't in your personal drive space and be very careful about deleting anything in the Library folder.

• Using An Array Collection Produced From XML In Conjunction With Shared Object

I have an old app that Greg LaFrance helped me out with greatly which allows the user to drag items between two tilelists and then save the contents of both tilelists by clicking a save button using the sharedObject method. The tilelists are populated by array collections defined in the app. I want to change this so that the tilelists are instead populated by an array collection which I've retrieved from a remote xml file via http request but I can't get this to work. • ITunes Fix for Manually Moving Music and other Media

Intro
Any iTunes 7.x user who manages their own music library outside of the "iTunes Music" folder might be able to tell you that iTunes DOES NOT respond well after manually moving tracks from one place to another on their computer systems. In fact, any file you move becomes immediately unplayable in iTunes. And, if you're anything like I am, losing several years worth of song rating metadata and playlists is not a good incentive for change. However, one thing others might not be able to tell you is that there's an easy workaround for the problem and you get to keep your playlists, ratings and other info. Read on to learn about the workaround.
About the Workaround
The workaround is a simple hack I devised after recently transferring a good portion of my music library between hard disks and running into problems with iTunes. The fix steps provided below are intended to circumvent the problems with iTunes and give users the freedom to move songs and other media files on their computers while maintaining the integrity of both the ratings and the playlists. Meaning you won't need to manually update the song locations in iTunes one-at-a-time, which, at version 7.02 is the only way to accomplish this task using the program.
Please be aware that not all information is retained using this workaround. What will be lost are the following: the "Recently Added", "Recently Played" and "Top 25 Most Played" iTunes Smart Playlists; any media file play counts; last played information; and possibly some other data used only internally by iTunes.
So, if you're comfortable parting with some metadata while keeping your cherished song ratings and playlists intact during file relocation, read on to learn how to use the workaround.
Workaround Steps
The following instructions walk step-by-step through the process of this workaround.
Note: All backslashes used in file paths have been converted to forward slashes so that they will adhere with MySpace XSS security validation checks. These altered paths can still be copy/paste into Windows Vista's Explorer program once the Username is changed to the User Account where the iTunes files reside.
Preparing for the Move
Before you move your files, do the following:
1. Close iTunes.
2. Create a backup copy of the following files:
iTunes Library XML (iTunes Music Library.xml)
Note: Vista users can find the Library XML at C:/Users/Username/Music/iTunes
iTunes Music Database (iTunes Library.itl)
Note: Vista users can find the Music Database at C:/Users/Username/Music/iTunes
Moving Your Files
This part should be self explanatory, but while you do it make sure to note the following two things:
1. The path where the files were previously stored (e.g. D:/Music).
2. The path where the files will end up (e.g. E:/Music).
Execute the Fix
After your files are moved, complete the following steps to implement the fix.
Note: Do not open iTunes during this process.
Hack the iTunes Library XML
Once the files are moved the Library XML file locations will be out of sync. Follow the steps below to update them so that they now reference the correct file locations.
1. Open the iTunes Library XML with a Text Editor with a Find/Replace function.
Note: Vista users can find the Library XML at C:/Users/Username/Music/iTunes
Tip: Do not try to do this with Dreamweaver if your Library XML is greater than 10MB.
2. Perform a Find/Replace using the following inputs:
Find: Path from Step 1 of Moving Your Files
Replace: Path from Step 2 of Moving Your Files
3. Confirm your results, and then save and close the Library XML.
Delete the iTunes Music Database
Hacking the iTunes Library isn't enough to fool iTunes. Like the Library XML, the Music Database also holds the file locations of all of the media stored within the program. And it's smart enough to wipe out the Library XML hack if iTunes is opened before completing this step.
Ensure you have backed up the iTunes Music Database (iTunes Library.itl) and delete the file.
Note: Vista users can find the Music Database at C:/Users/Username/Music/iTunes
Back in iTunes
Once the fix is in place you can now open iTunes again. You will notice that all of your playlists, music and other items have vanished. In order to recover them all (with the exception of the Smart Playlists mentioned in the About the Workaround section above) we'll need to import the hacked Library XML file back into iTunes.
1. Open iTunes and press CtrlShiftO or go to File > Import…
2. Navigate to and Open your modified Library XML (as pictured below).
3. iTunes will then begin importing the contents of the XML file (as pictured below).
Note: This process may take a while, depending on the size if your library.
Wrapping Up
Once the import process is complete iTunes will look almost exactly the way you left it, with the exception that some playlists have been duplicated and the number of songs may be a hair off. To fix this problem delete any duplicate playlists in the "Library" panel in iTunes. You can now test out the changes by selecting an item moved earlier and testing it out. All that's left from there is to let iTunes perform any automated analysis it needs to do and rock on.
Other OS

Holy Smokes:
I appreciate your detailed workaround post. My question is this: I use iTunes to keep everything organized (though I'm well aware of the shortcomings...) and can use the simple solution that Chris from CA posted, but I don't have room to consolidate everything. My read on consolidating is that you copy from wherever you have your music located (and right now my music is outside of the MyMusic/iTunes folder, as that backs up to my work server) and so you have to have enough room for all of your music to be copied (and then you delete it from its prior location). That's how Apple describes it in, e.g., http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748. I ain't go that kind of room. Is there any way to make the move to a completely different PC by following the simple option? From the posting I just linked it sounds like you MUST consolidate whether you use you iPod to move things or use an external drive.
Of course, I can use your workaround, but I thought I'd ask first. Many thanks.
