Manually organizing in iPhoto 11' is grayed out

I just installed iPhoto 11'. I am trying to make a book for a business and NEED to organize my photos manually. I does not let me, I tried the steps presented in the tutorial. No luck! Buy the way, what happened with iPhoto, it thinks everything needs to be done for you automatically! LOL, Apple, we do have a proficient brain, you know!

Are you trying to manually organise in an Event? That's not supported. You can do it in an Album, and that's what's done in the tutorial.

  • IPhoto sharing command grayed out

I am running a brand new 20" Intel iMac with Leopard 10.5.1. I successfully initiated video chat with my brother's MacBook running Tiger. I successfully put up PDF's and JPG's on his screen by dragging them onto the video window or using the "Share a File With iChat Theater" command.
However, I couldn't access the "Share iPhoto With iChat Theater" command. It is permanently grayed out. My brother thought it was because he was not on Leopard, but this doesn't make sense to me. Even when I am not chatting with anyone, the "Share a File With iChat Theater" command is black but the "Share a File With iChat Theater" command is grayed out.
It seems like iChat doesn't recognize that I have iPhoto '08 installed. I did manually install iPhoto '08 off the Apple installation discs after doing an clean install of the whole system (Leopard was not pre-installed). iPhoto '08 has been working great on its own. But I can't access it from iChat.
    Anyone else experiencing this problem?
    Jason

More follow-up, since I have seen this discussed a lot in other threads... I just chatted with my parents, who don't have Leopard, and was able to share photos and movies via both menu commands and drag and drop. On their screen, the images filled the screen and the small window remained with their own video feedback. On my screen, their video filled the screen and the images I was presenting filled the small window. So, this tells me that without Leopard on both the sending and receiving sides, you don't get the side-by-side iChat Theater presentation.
I also went to the Apple Store at the mall and played with iChat Theater on two Leopard laptops. When I shared any image or video, the video feedback of myself disappeared and was replaced by the shared content on a large angled window. The incoming video from the other party went into the small angled window at the bottom left. However, the other party saw both me (in the small angled window) and the shared content (in the large angled window), just like in Steve Jobs' presentation. What's more, I was able to continue running special effects, including background effects, while sharing content. In other words, the other party could see the shared video in the large window and the special effect video of me in the small window, simultaneously. Powerful stuff.
When I was chatting with my parents, though, I was not able to run the background effects simultaneously while sharing content. The normal special effects (Twirl, etc) were available, but the other two pages of effects didn't even show up in the Effects window. Clearly, there is some dynamic throttling of capability going on in the app, just as others have suggested.
Finally, I would note that, at some point at the Apple Store, I could no longer get the shared content to go into the side-by-side Theater mode. I could still share content, either through menu commands or through drag and drop, but it would always fill the screen. I brought an employee over and he played around for a while looking for a toggle switch, but to no avail. I figured it was a memory problem and suggested restarting iChat. When we did that, it fixed the problem and the side-by-side Theater mode was restored for images, videos, Keynote presentations, etc.
I thought these were some very interesting experimental results that gave me better insight into the behaviors of iChat Theater. Hopefully someone else can benefit from this information.

  • IPhoto Library file "grayed out"

When I start up iPhoto, it prompts me to choose a library. My library file is "grayed out", not letting me choose it. Any help? I'd like to try and keep all my albums if I can. Thanks!

    Terence,
Thanks for the quick reply and the good advice. Problem solved

  • My external iPhoto folder is grayed out - how can I open it in iPhoto?

My old Seagate external drive which had my iPhoto folder died but we were able to move a copy from my TimeMachine to my new LeCie external harddrive.
But now when I try to open iPhoto and then point to the LeCia folder for my iPhoto Library - the folder is grayed out. But all 194.4GB is in the iPhoto Library.
How can I may the iPhoto Library not gray so I can open this in iPhoto?
    Thanks

Got it fixed!  The Folder was set to Open With Terminal!
Maybe when you moved it over from your other system, the Open With got changed?  To change this, in your Finder, select the iPhoto library from your User/Pictures folder and do a Get Info on it Command+I.
Then change the Open With to iPhoto application!
Then from the Finder, double click the iPhoto Folder and it will be opened with iPhoto!  WALLA it worked!

  • Preview issue. Send to iPhoto option is grayed out after Lion upgrade

Preview issue. Send to iPhoto option is greyed out after Lion upgrade.
In Snow Leopard it was an option to send pics from Preview to iPhoto, but now it is greyed out if I right-click on the pic. I have searced and tried everything, but I cannot fix it, so does anyone have a fix for it? Please :-)

I can offer no help but would also like to see this issue resolved.  Firstly, it would be useful to know if this problem is seen by everyone.  When viewing photos in Preview, with thumbnails in the sidebar, right-clicking on any of the thumbnails results in this:
Prior to the upgrade to Lion, "Send to iPhoto" was not greyed out and worked as expected.

  • Iphoto still grayed out after iphoto upgrade after mavericks install, what should I do?

After upgrading to mavericks Iphoto was Grayed out. The computer Notified me that I would have to upgrade iphoto from 9.2.1 to to latest version.
went to the mac app store, the upgrade page showed the iphoto upgrade, it downloaded and installed the upgrade but iphoto is still grayed out in the dock and in the applications folder. The mac app store shows the iphoto upgrade as being installed. whot should I do?

First, make sure the new copy of iPhoto was not installed as a separate icon in your Applications folder.
If that's not the case, try launching it anyway; I've seen instances where the icon fails to update until the associated application is launched for the first time.

  • Address Book Does Not Link to Faces, Button Grayed Out

The import face from iPhoto button is grayed out and not active on my computer, is this new Lion feature not working or not yet acitved within Lion?  Here's a description of how the feature was supposed to work (see bold text description).  I can only browse for a photo or use the camera button.
If you like to match faces with names, the new Address Book can now pull pictures of your contacts from your iPhoto library. Double-click on the picture box on a card, then click on the Import Face From iPhoto button in the lower left corner. You’ll be presented with a grid showing up to eight faces associated with that name in iPhoto—complete with dates those shots were taken—with the current contact photo (if any) in the middle. If you have more than eight photos of a contact, you can use arrows at the bottom of the photo pop-up window to scroll through the others.

I have the same problem but only with a couple of my contacts.
matt.sheppard is right about having to have matching names in both applications but I still have a couple of contacts, with matching names, that it won't let me access their "face" in iPhoto.
    Sorry not much help... :-/

  • Grayed out pictures in "Faces"

In process of creating DVDs , of pictures from iPhoto, the "Faces"portion of the iPhoto library shows Grayed out photo instead of the typical photo. May have been result of migration to iMac with HDD plus SSD. Any way to restore " Faces"?
             Using  Lion 10.7.3
                         IPhoto 11

Right your are, Beat. I'm planning on getting a Spyder3, but in the meantime
I thought I would try running the Windows monitor calibration procedure
    (partly described below).
    Kind regards,
    Ron
Calibrating your display helps to ensure that colors are represented
accurately on your monitor. In Windows, you can use Display Color
    Calibration to calibrate your display.
If you have a display calibration device that came with other software,
consider using the color measurement device with the accompanying software
instead of Display Color Calibration. Using the calibration device with the
accompanying calibration software that often comes with it can help you get
the best color on your display. In general, using a color measurement
instrument to calibrate your display will result in a better calibration
compared to the results of doing a visual calibration (which is done in
       Display Color Calibration).
Display Color Calibration is not available in Windows Server 2008 R2.
       1.
       Click to open Display Color
    Calibration.<shortcut:%25systemroot%25\system32\dccw.exe>
image: Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an
administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide
       confirmation.
       2.
In Display Color Calibration, click Next to continue

  • Iphoto manual sort is grayed out?

View / Sort Photos / Manually.. is grayed out in iPhoto, but I'd like to manually order the way the event groups are display in the "Photos" view... Is it possible?

I'm looking at the folders in the photo view...
No, in iPhoto world, you're looking at the photos with the Event titles showing, that's all.

  • In Iphoto my manually sort is grayed out. I am unable to rearrange my photos. Any suggestions??

In IPhoto (Events), my "manually sort" is grayed out. I am unable to rearrange my photos. Any suggestions??

    Hello Terence,
Okay I will try reformating the camera's card. However all is well when I export photos to my iMac at home or onto my iPad.
If your suggestion does not work should I try reinstalling iPhoto from the iLife disk? If so, how do I go about doing that or is there a website somewhere explaining this?
    Regards,
    Tom

  • How do I sort photos the way I want them to appear within an Event? Sort Manually is always grayed out. SAR

Keep trying but sort manually stays grayed out. All I want to do is sort photos within one event the way I want them to appear.

    It's like iTunes:
You can view an music album on iTunes and there are all the tracks. The hit single, the annoying filler that they stuck on, all there.
Or you can create a Playlist of just the singles, or tracks from various albums that work together well, or just your favourite tracks from different artists and so on.
In iPhoto: the Event has all the photos taken at that time. So, all 812 photos you took at the Wedding. All there.
An Album allows you to just use the 50 best ones, and possibly group them with 12 from the Rehearsal and five others from the day after. Just the best shots. Or bunch all the photos of the groom from birth to today, or all the photos of the bride and her dog. Or whatever. Really, the limit is your imagination.
Like Playlists in iTunes, images in an iPhoto album are simply referenced from the Library. So a photo can be in any number of albums and use no extra disk space.
Then, once you couple your imagination with metadata...
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 50k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • I am trying to install Iphoto on my new MacBook Air adn the install button is grayed out  Any suggestions

I am trying to install iphoto 09 on my new MacBook Air and the install button is grayed out.  Both for installation and custom install.  Is there a problem that I am not aware of?

    Check for receipts
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • I have Windows 8.1 on my PC. Ever since downloading the latest version of i Tunes 11.1.4 it will not recognize any of my i Pods (3). Never had any problems syncing until this latest version of i Tunes.Manual sync is "grayed out", any ideas ? Thanks

I have Windows 8.1 on my PC. Ever since downloading the latest version of i Tunes, it will not recognize any of my i Pods (3) and therefore am unable to sync any music from my i Tunes to the i Pods. I've tried all the obvious things like resarting the PC as well as the i Pods tried different patch cables but the i Tunes software will no longer recognize my i Pods. I have automatic sync selected, but I even tried to manually sync by clicking on devices under File but the sync icon is "grayed" out. When I look under Preferences and click on devices the serial numbers of my i Pods appear and are correct but again will not recognize the i Pod when plugged in to the PC. Bottom line I'm dead in the water....appreciate any suggestions....thanks
