Manually set height of selected objects / smart objects

This might be a dumb question, considering how many years I've been using Photoshop, but ....
I was lining up and resizing these smart objects, each on its own layer. Typically I simply layout a guide and drag it but I was wondering if there is a way to set an exact height? When you first drag an object you see the height adjusting as a percentage, but once done you see it at 100% if you click again. Just wondering if I could set an exact height numerically somewhere.

Thanks. You'd think after all these years I'd have known. Maybe I did at one time (getting old). When there are many ways to do a thing you sometimes 'work around' a gap in knowledge to 'just get it done' and forget to ask the question "is there an easier way".

  • Smart Object Selection Highlight

Anyone know how to disable border highlighting when selecting a smart object in the layers panel?  Designing pixel-to-pixel is cumbersome when the highlight appears and temporarily extends the size of the shape by 1 px.  It's just a bit of a nuissance.

Are you talking about the path showing for a shape layer?
You can't disable it by default.  That's what we southern boys sometimes like to call a "design shortcoming".
Edit:  Oops, it seems I neglected to read Brett's comment, just above.  I may have been wrong about this.
Nah, on second thought it comes back on and sticks.  It's definitely a design shortcoming.
You can hide it after you've selected the layer to work on the shape by clicking the path icon in the Properties panel.

  • Photoshop CS4 smart object template just overwrote a raw file - HELP

So.  I've been working in Photoshop extensively for about 6 years now and I am well aware that nothing we do in Photoshop or Lightroom is supposed to overwrite a raw file.  I'm not talking about changing it to something a little lighter or darker, I'm talking about replacing a picture of one baseball player with another one - and the original? Gone.
Here's what happened: I have a poster template that contains several layers, 7 of which are smart objects.  I change the pictures in the template by right-clicking the smart object layer and selecting "replace smart object," browsing to the new image, selecting, and here is what SHOULD happen: the target picture opens in Adobe camera raw, I make some small edits, click done or okay or something similar, and that new image has replaced the old one in the template.  What DID happen was this: I followed the procedure above and selected my target raw file, the picture that was already in the template (the one I was trying to replace with my target file) opened in Adobe camera raw.  I thought - Hey, that's wierd!  Closed the ACR dialog and tried again.  Same thing happened.  I opened lightroom and saw - to my HORROR - that the target file had been changed to the same image that was in the template.
If it clarifies: pictures of player A (who played in 2009) is in all of the smart object layers in my template.  I want to make that poster be of player B (who played in 2012) so I begin replacing all the smart objects.  When I get to the 3rd image in the poster template, Photoshop overwrites my raw file of player B with the smart object photo of Player A.  There were no photos of player A on the network drive that the picture of Player B was on.  But there's one now.  My raw file shows that it was modified about 10 minutes ago.
We tried undoing in Photoshop.  That did nothing.  We tried deleting the xmp file.  That did nothing.  We removed it from the lightroom catalog and reimported it.  It is now a picture of Player A from 2009 and my picture of Player B from 2012 is just gone.
Anybody have any idea what this could be and how we could avoid it in the future?
    Best,
    Jamey

Now - JJ - when you say "overlay files" - what do you mean?  Because that feels like a good description for what happened.
We performed no save operation at any point during the sequence of events that ended with the image in one raw file being replaced by the image in the smart object.
As I wrote Smart Object layers embedded object is a copy of the original  and if you replace it you replace it with a copy of some other object. Embedded object are copies and independent from the original.  If after creating a smart Object layer who's embedded object is a copy of a raw file and its conversion settings. You change the original RAW files RAW conversion settings the smart object layer raw conversion setting are not changes for its a copy with independent raw conversion settings. When you replace a smart object layers contents you will replace the embedded object and you should replace it with an object the has the same pixel size and orientation. Because there is an associated transform for the object in the layer that is not replaced. The replacement is also a copy.  If the original smart object was created using  File Open where you choose a RAW file  ACR would open with the RAW files current conversion settings.  In ACR you can changes the setting then hold down the shift key to change the open image button to an Open Object button.  Using that button ACR will open a smart object layer in Photoshop the contents of the embedded object is a copy of the RAW file and the current ACR settings.  No File is written Photoshop is not a File Editor its a Document editor that has many data structures for different layer types.  When you replace the contents of a smart object you will be put into a "Place" file selection dialog if you choose a raw file it should have the same orientation as the image being replaced because of the associated transform. When you choose a RAW file ACR will open and you can change the conversion settings however there will be no Open Image button instead there will be an OK button.  There is also a save image button and you can save a RAW file that is a DNG file not a CR2 file. Like the DNG converter. If you click the OK button the embedded object in the smart object layer will be replaced with a copy of the selected RAW file and the current ACR settings. Again there is no file written Photoshop is not a File editor just the embedded smart object data is replaced in Photoshop smart object layer's data structure.
I do not think the use of smart objects in you process caused what you are experiencing and because it only happens once an a while I feel its more likely caused by some human error made during the processing in those cases. I would look elsewhere for what causing the overlay. In the place file selection dialog it is possible to rename files perhaps even by accident. Programs like LR and Bridge can rename and copy files perhaps overlay other files.

  • Can I change what layer is used to name a Smart Object?

I really love smart objects, and in particular I appreciate being able to combine a layer and its adjustment layers into a single smart object. However, when I create smart objects from multiple layers this way, I end up with names like "Hue/Saturation 31" and "Curves 16". Is there a way to set Photoshop to name the smart objects based on the primary layer, so I don't lose the layer names that actually indicate what's in the smart object?
For example, I do a lot of editing and combining groups of "selfies" that people send me. Once I extract them from their backgrounds, I bring them into a single file, with each "selfie" named with the name of the person pictured. So, for example, I'd have a Jane Doe layer, a John Smith layer, etc. Then I add adjustment layers to each one, to match their exposure and color as much as possible. Then, if any of the adjustment layers are not applied evenly to the entire smart object, I combine the smart object and its adjustment layers into a new smart object, so I can move and scale it easily without messing up the alignment of the combined layers. However, then I have to go back to the original files to know who is who.
Smart objects work much better than linked layers, but all the extra steps necessary to re-name them are driving me nuts. Does anyone have a solution?
    Paula

When I know i'll be transforming or adding additional filters, I prefer to go directly to creating smart objects rather than grouping them first, since the relevant layers are automatically "grouped" by being pulled into the smart object. My thought is that the default name for a smart object (or a group, for that matter) should be the lowest layer on the selected stack that has a non-default name, since in most cases that's the one you'd want to use for the new smart object. I don't know exactly how Photoshop recognizes layer names, but since it knows what number to assign to new layers or individual types of adjustment layers, it should also be able to recognize when a layer name is not a default name.

  • Smart object in PS: what if you crop or do perspective correction afterwards

Let's say I open a LR smart object in PS, and do some stuff in PS in layers.
Then, I crop or rotatate or fix distortion in the RAW image in LR.  What happens to the PS layers, which no longer match the size or orientation of the smart object?

When a file is passed from Lightroom to Photoshop as a Smart Object, there is no live link. From then on, changes to either instance won't affect the other.
You can make it happen manually, though.
First you save the Lightroom changes from the Lightroom database back out to the original file, by selecting the image in Lightroom and pressing Command-S/Ctrl-S (the shortcut for the Save Metadata To File command, which is under the Metadata menu in the Library module and under the Settings menu in the Develop module). If the image is a DNG, the edit metadata is written into the DNG. If the image is raw, the edits are written into the XMP metadata sidecar.
Next, in Photoshop, you select the Smart Object in the Layers panel and choose Layer > Smart Objects > Replace Contents. Then select the original file and import it again. This is sort of like updating a link. To save time finding the original file, from Lightroom you can right-click the image and choose Reveal in Finder/Reveal in Explorer, then drag it into the Place dialog in Photoshop that comes up when you Replace Contents. Once you get through all that, the Photoshop instance is updated because it re-reads the updated edit metadata you saved out of Lightroom, and applies it.
If in Lightroom you cropped, rotated, or distorted the image, it may be necessary in Photoshop to choose Image > Reveal All to automatically expand to the new dimensions or Image > Trim to delete extra space that resulted from the update.
It's a very tedious and time-consuming series of steps, but it can be done if you need it.

  • Smart Objects not Updating in PS CC

I'm designing elements in Illustrator CC and then copy and paste them into PS and select  Create Smart Object. I've also tried saving the AI element and then placeing in PS as well. Then if I double click the smart object to edit it, it will open up in illustrator and I make a change then save and close and when I re-activate PS the change does not apply.
Did PS change something that I'm not aware of? This is a huge pain in the A**. Anyone else having this problem?

I was actually just working in Illlustrator. Selecting the vector object and then select PS and Paste. I'm then asked if I want this to be a smart object. I select yes and it adds the object as a smart object layer. If I double click the layer it opens it in Illustrator, I make a change, save it and close it. Then back to PS and the smart object doesn't update.
I haven't used Place Embedded or Place Linked. I don't understand what those functions do. It's just not how I'm use to working.
Actually I have a large PSD doc. Inside it is a group of objects that I have turned into a Smart object. Inside that (by double clicking) is an AI file that is also a smart object. When I open that up to make a change it won't update once I save and close.
I have tried a coulpe of test with placed Linked and Embedded objects and I can't get those to work either. So what ever the change was. So far not really liking it.

  • Smart object masks problem

Let's see if I can explain the problem I'm having...
    1. I create a blank 12x12 320 dpi image.
    2. I choose place from the file menu and choose an image to place on the 12x12 document as a smart object
    3. I make a selection on the smart object (rectangle for example)
    4. Press the mask button under the layers on the layers palette to apply the rectangular mask for the smart object.
    5. Now select the smart object and try and re-size it with the layer handles.
The mask for the smart object gets all messed up. It's like it puts the mask at the bottom right of the smart object now. I can un-link the mask and object and move it back, but it seems it is behaving incorrectly.
    Can anyone verify this?
    Matt

The problem is your mask is not linked to the smart object, and therefore doesn't transform with it. The workaround in CS3 was to drop the smart object in a group and apply the mask to the group instead. I'm assuming by your post this is still necessary in CS4. You might try clicking between the mask and the smart object (in the layers panel) first and see if a link (chain) icon appears...

  • Smart Object Sampling Technique.

Hope I named this topic aptly. I'm pretty new to the whole up/downsampling technique thing. In years of web design, I just never had any real need of it.
However, I ran into the following scenario:
We have a big PS file full of pixel art & photographs, some of both are smart objects. We'd like to resize a bunch of them, but need bicubic for some, nearest-neighbor for others.
Is there any way to set sampling techniques for each smart object?
(If not, where does one post feature requests? ;D)
    Cheers!

First you need to know th all smart objects are not created equal.  An embedded smart object is a copy of something "Photoshop" can be just about anything Photoshop supports.  A Raw with Raw settings,  A PSD file, A Layer, A layer set etc. Smart Objects can resized two ways.
The first way is the re adjust the transform associated with the Smart Object Layer (Ctrl/Command+T).  Transform I believe uses your user id Photoshop preference for interpolation. When a smart object is resized this way Photoshop first renders the pixels for the smart object the resize those pixels like a raster layer using your default interpolation method. Even if the embedded smart object is a vector or text graphic. I guess you could set your Photoshop preference interpolation before doing each transform.
The second way to resize a smart object is by editing it in Photoshop and use Photoshop Tools.  You do this be double clicking on the smart object icon in the smart object layer in the layers palette. When you do this Photoshop or ACR will open the embedded smart object in Photoshop as a temp work document in ACR the raw file with its current ACR settings applied.   Use the tools approbate to resize.  For example if the embedded smart object was a PSD file use menu Image>Image Size. Check resample the size and interpolation.  Text and Vector layers will be resized using vector graphics or change font size raster layers will be resized using the method you set. When you commit the resize In ACR or use menu File>Save in Photoshop the embedded object in the smart object layer doubled clicked on will be update with the changes you made.

  • Actions & Smart Objects

If an image is opened from ACR normally, the base layer will be named "Background".  If an image is opened as a Smart Object, the base layer will be named as the filename of the image.
If an action is programmed that creates new layers on top of the Smart Object then selects the base layer, the step in the action will be 'Select _MG_1234' or whatever the name of the image file is.  If you try to run that action on a different image file, an error message will pop up at the step where the base layer is selected indicating that the file is not available because the action is pointing to a specific image file name.
How does one go about making an action with smart objects generic so that it will run on any image file?
    Thanks.

One way if your action always adds the same amount of layers is to use a keyboard shortcut while recording the action to select the smart object layer.

How make Ps save its smart objects directly on the current folder project?

Assuming you are on windows - Right click on the smart object layer in the layer panel and select export smart object. This will create a psb file than can then be opened later by photoshop using the normal File>Open.

  • Why use smart objects

Been away from photoshop since early days of CS6. At that time I did not use smart objects. Now I see many tutorials using smart objects and smart filters. Is the use of smart objects in the mainstream now? Reasons for and against using them.

Smart Objects are a very good thing!
Photoshop Help | Work with Smart Objects
"Smart Object are layers that contain image data from raster or vector images, such as Photoshop or Illustrator files. Smart Objects preserve an image’s source content with all its original characteristics, enabling you to perform nondestructive editing to the layer."
I can't think of reasons NOT to use them.

  • "pop-up" smart object?

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me how I can create a pop-up object (Smart Object or otherwise).
My goal is to do the following:
    1. The learner clicks a button
    2. The resulting action is a pop up message which is displayed for 3 seconds and then
    3. Automatically executes a line of javascript
    Is this even possible?
Currently, I am doing something similar, only I am using a 'phantom' slide where the message resides. Unfortunately, this method messes up my lesson page count display by: "Page $$cpInfoCurrentSlide$$ of  $$cpInfoSlideCount$$"
I'd rather do this with a pop-up, if possible?
    Thank you,
    Doug

Would be possible with micronavigation: put the pop up message (in a shape if you want) at the end of the slide for the wanted duration and hide it. When clicking the button, show the message, navigate to the start frame of the message and execute the JS. If the button is not clicked, the message will remain invisible. Of course I do not know what has to happen more on that slide, or if there is some audio synchronized.
