Manually Transfer File - No Migration Assistant

I bought a Macbook Air last Sunday and after many unsuccessful attempts to use migration assistant in transferring everything from my 2009 MacBook pro, I am fed up and going to resort to manually copying files. All I need to move is my iTunes Library, Calibre Library with all of my e-books, and a few select documents.
Can I use file sharing between my old MacBook pro and new MacBook air to copy these items? What would be the best way to do this?

It sounds like you 2 libraries of content you want to move over to your new computer. As far as your iTunes library is concerned, you can certainly use File Sharing as an option if you like but you have to modify folder permissions and access to do that. This article should help you do that, named:

If these computers are both connected to the network via Wi-Fi, it may be faster to copy the iTunes library to an external drive, then copy the library over to another computer using this article:

As far as your Calibre library you may be able to use one of the above methods to copy your library over, but I would check with the support and/or documentation available from the developer for the best way to go about that.

What's the fastest way to transfer files with Migration Assistant?

I am trying to transfer everything from an iMac 21.5 over Ethernet with Migration Assistant and it is 20+ Hours estimated transfer time. Once I strt can I switch to Thunderbolt? Everything I've read states this is the fastest means.

Thanks. Through further investigation my old iMac does not have a Thunderbolt port so that's out of the question. I think it was going over wifi instead of Ethernet so I disabled my router and am now migrating from Time Machine via USB 2.0. Estimated around 3+ hours now.
Any idea how to get my old iMac out of migration mode?

Why did I wind up with two identities after transfer of files by Migration Assistant? How can I fix that?

At first I could not find my files after Migration Assistant completed a 45 hours transfer of files from my Macbook to my new iMac. Then I realized that I had two identities on my new iMac. What is the best way to correct this? Do I have to start over and wait another 2 days for the migration?

I originally wanted to reinstall my info from the MacBook using Time Machine. The iMac would not recognize the backups on my external hard drive.
I decided to use Migration Assistant to move from my MacBook to my new iMac. After migration I tried to backup (bu) with Time Machine using the external disk I used for the MacBook. The Time Machine said the bu (over 450 Gb) was too large for the disk. I found this odd. There seemed to be a much higher amount of data on my iMac than existed on my MacBook. I bought a new 2Tb external. I originally hooked it up to my Airport Extreme with a USB cable. Time Machine said the bu would take over 36 hours. This seemed rediculous. I hooked up through USB directly to the iMac. It said the bu would take over 18 hours. Still rediculous.
After looking through things I discovered that Migration Assistant actually double copied all the data from my MacBook to my iMac. There were two copies of every folder. I deleted all the copies. Now I am trying to deal with my sons old ID and getting Time machine to work properly. It appears there were some disk permission issues. That my also relate to my sons ID. I cannot find his ID anywhere on the iMac but App Store keeps asking my to log on using his ID.

Transfer emails with migration assistant.

My boss asked me to transfer all his old email from old macpro to his new one. Do i have to set up his email account on iMal first before i transfer them with migration assistant? Or will that set up autmatically while transfering?

On the old Mac. User/Library/Mail. Copy the folder to the new Mac to the desktop. Then on the new Mac from the Finder menu hold down the option key and click on Go. Select Library. Drag the Mail folder from the Library to the trash (don't empty). drag the Mail folder from the old Mac into the Library. Now launch Mail and check to see that all the email is there. If all is well empty the trash.

"Clean" install-- manual info transfer vs. Migration Assistant

I did a 'clean' install of SL from Leo recently. I wiped the hard drive using the SL disc's Disk Utility, then installed the new OS. It does seem faster (I previously did the normal upgrade and install). However, there are some problems, including the fact that iWork looks really strange, with all text looking light cyan-- if it even shows up at all.
After installing, I did use Migration Assistant to move my home folder and all its settings, and then I manually reinstalled all my software. Is this likely to re-install many of the same bugs that I was hoping to get rid of with the clean installation? And in that case, is it better to manually move my files/directories rather than bringing my home folder through Migration Assistant?
Bottom line: get rid of the strange bugs such as in iWork, and further reduce clutter on the hard drive (although I did seem to free up 10GB of space already).

Be sure you drive is not overly full. Rule of thumb would be over 85%. What size is your drive and what is the available space? (Tip- click on your hard drive and command-i (Get Info)
Create a new User go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" (make it an admin acct) and test the apps in this new account, if they work the problem is isolated to your User and not systemwide.

No but porting over your settings/preferences would do that.

As I said, it depends what you ask Migration Manager to migrate. If you wish to hand migrate here is a user tip that may help.

If you installed language translations try Monolingual
Also, you can delete all of your /Library/Printers/except the one(s) you use.
My advice, if you find the corruption to be systemwide (I know , groan...) would be to do another clean install and do a optional install without language translations. Then port over your apps and data but leave the settings and prefs behind. You just need to reenter them.

Missing iTunes 9 songs after transfer with SL Migration Assistant

I have a backup drive where I stored 82+ gigs of music, all imported from cd. They were saved using various versions of iTunes as AAC's. I transferred the Music folder from the external drive to a new iMac via OS 10.6.2 Migration Assistant.
I noticed this morning that some music was missing from the iTunes library that were still contained in my iPod... which I didn't sync! Whole artist folders are missing, some songs of other artists are gone. I lost 3+ gigs of music. I checked the new iTunes music folders, these artists and songs are not present.
Unfortunately, I didn't notice the difference in total storage when I opened iTunes after transfer, 8000+ songs, over 6 years of saving. And wiped the external drive and set it up as a clone backup for the new iMac.
The only factor I'm seeing is that every artist I've identified as being gone was a fairly recent save under iTunes 9. I've been doing a lot of saving over the last 3 months.
Anyone else losing MA transferred music with iTunes 9 and/or Snow Leopard?

Digital Camera Manually Transfer Files on Memory Card

I have a Canon Powershot Pro1 digital camera that I am able to connect to my MBP. My question is whether or not there is a way to manually move files onto the memory card in the camera. I have my camera connected via a USB2.0 cord and a 1GB CF Card inside the camera. I know there is a way to automatically transfer all photos and I know all about ImageCapture, iPhoto and Aperture. I was wondering if there was a way to make OSX recognize the camera as a external drive and manually move files back and forth because on my PC I have edited some photos and saved them as .PSD (Photoshop Files) which surely would not be transferred or recognized. For arguments sake assume I have other files other than JPG or other image files and I need to access them through a USB cord connected to the camera with a CF card inside. Thanks in advance.

Your camera should appear as a USB disk drive on your desktop as soon as you plug it in. If not, buy a USB card reader and plug the memory card into it and the card reader into your Mac's USB port. You can then drag files onto the card.
If all you want to do is transfer files between a Windows computer and your Mac, there are lots of ways to do it. An easier way is to simply buy a USB jump drive, or if both computers are near to each other, get a network hub, plug them both in via a cat5 ethernet cable and set up file sharing.

Finder can't locate files after Migration Assistant

So I did Migration Assistant from my old 2008 Macbook to my latest Macbook Pro.
I had it so it's all under a new User Login which is the same as my 2008 User Login.
I always sign in to that User on the new Macbook Pro.
I know all my files are in there I just can't do a search on Finder. I type it in Finder but no result.
How do I fix this?

Double-Click the Users folder.
You should have a home folder for your first account that you set up during the setup assistant on the newer computer, and another for the home folder that was migrated.
Most of the information you transferred should be in there.

Exactly what files does Migration Assistant migrate?

Does anyone know precisely what files and folders are copied when you select "Other files and folders" in Migration Assistant?

Help locating files after migrate assist.

I have just successfully moved files from my PC to my new MacBook Air. I couldn't find the files at first, but then read some other message boards and realized they were copied to a different user. So I logged into that user account. Still can't find my files. I got to Finder and there is nothing... no music, no photos, no documents. iTunes has updated... all my files and playlists are there, but I can't find anything else.
Another message board said I could type the file name into the Spotlight... I did this and there everything is! But how do I access it without typing in a file name? I am not going to remember the name of every single file. I just want to go to a folder somewhere and find my files. HELP!!! I love my new Mac, but this is soooo frustrating!
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance!
And once I find these files, if you would like to tell me how to transfer them all to my Admin user account, I will love you forever.
P.S. I have even tried turning on the Shared folder, but it doesn't show up in Finder. Ugh!

Open a Finder window and select
View ▹ Show Path Bar
from the menu bar, if it's not already selected. Select All My Files in the sidebar and locate one of the files. The path to the file will appear in the path bar at the bottom of the window. Click the enclosing folder to open it.

Can't Find Transferred Files from Migration Assistant

Hi. did full mirgation thru migration assitant from old to new iMac and while the MAC HD properties say that the right amount of space (~280 GB) has been taken up, i cannot locate ANY of the transferred files. what's wrong, and what can i do?

you need to log in as the migrated user. those files are most likely in that user's home directory. log out of your current user and log into the migrated one and your files will be there.

Have you tried doing it the other way? Run Migration Assistant on the Mac? I haven't used a PC since 1995, so I can't help at all from the PC side.

Migration Assistant transferred applications but not other files

I just bought a new MacBook Air yesterday and connected wirelessly to my 2007 MacBook to transfer everything via Migration Assistant. All of my applications were transferred, however none of my 'desktop' or 'downloads' files made it over. I've tried twice now. Any ideas why that might be and what to try?

If the data is from another account, then they're there, but only accessable by the account that has ownership. Transfer those manually or use the other account to change the permissions outside of the home folder, or in the shared folder for that aaccount.

Reason 105 of why Setup Assistant is better than Migration Assistant to use on a new Mac the transfer from an old Mac. You would not have had this problem.

HT2518 Migration Assistant set up new user to which I don't have access to any of the files!!!

I tried to transfer my PC files using Migration Assistant. It set up another user and when I try and go to that users files, it says that I don't have permission to access them. What do I do now?

I'm going to assume the consolidating files does not work due to hard drive space limitations.
Since you're moving to Windows 7, have you tried using the Windows files and settings transfer utility? That will move everything for you to the same location on the new computer, it also allows some control over what actually gets moved.
Alternatively, if you know the location of all of the media, it can be manually moved by copying it from the old computer to the new computer in the same location.
Also, using the Apple article on moving the library, take a slight twist on what it says. Move the iTunes library to the external drive, update the settings in iTunes to reflect the library being on the external drive, then consolodate it.
The options are endless for moving the library... it simply takes a little effort to make it happen and possibly a twist on existing "standard" methods depending on your unique situation.

HT4796 How to solve my situation of having several Mac users created for me as I used Migration Assistant multiple times to move files from my PC

I recently tried to migrate data from my old and perpetually unstable PC to my new iMac through the Set up Assistant. However, half way through the 6 hour process, my PC crashed (the exact reason why I finally bought a Mac!) and the connection was lost. I continued with the Mac set up and then tried again later to migrate the files with Migration Assistant. Since I was nervous that my PC would crash again, I decided to do the data transfer in multiple migrations (ie. first I did photos and then after seeing that that was done successfully I did music and so on). Unexpected to me, even though all of the 4 migrations were successful I now have 4 additional users (in addition to the one I set up durnig the initial process) because each migration created a new user. Each user has little bits of my data.
What is the easiest way to merge these users or at least the data that resides in each one? I really only want one user. thank you.

You may not have created a mess, it's possible you simply don't know where your data is after migrating. Had you followed the Setup Assistant's on-screen prompts when you initially turned on your new system you would be running just fine by now. My guess is you haven't been exposed to Pondini's Lion Setup Assistant tips.
Migration Assistant (MA) and Setup Assistant (SA) are cousins, similar but different. The primary difference is MA creates a new user account which can be confusing to some users. If you successfuly migrated then log out of your existing using account and you should see the new user account. Log into that account then you should see the migrated data. If you do then use Pondini's Transferring files from one User Account to another.
However if you have totally made of mess out of things then I'd start over, this time using the Setup Assistant Tips beginning where he discusses Second Chance.
