Manually Updating iPod

If my iPod is set to automatically update when I connect to my computer, how can I change the setting to manually update instead. I have music that is no longer on my computer, but is on my iPod, and I don't want the iPod to ersase the songs on it when I connect to the computer.

You'll eventually want to Transfer music manually
But first, you'll want to Keep iTunes from automatically updating your iPod
Another Easier Alternative:
While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys in Windows (CMD + Option keys on a Mac). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes. The iPod will then appear in the iTunes source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto-sync and then you can release the keys. This action may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer.
You can then ‘right-click‘ on the iPod icon in iTunes’ source column and select iPod Options, then check the box that says “Manually manage songs and playlists”. You can now manage your library without losing any songs on the iPod.
Note: If connecting to a different computer than the ‘iPod’s Home Computer’, iTunes will ask you if you want to update your iPod and give you an opportunity to opt out. This will not happen if you connect to the ‘Home’ computer – iTunes will auto-sync without warning!. Best to know the difference.

  • How to manually update ipod?

I have chosen the option to 'Manually manage music and videos'. Previously I updated my ipod by dragging new songs from my itunes library and dropping them in my ipod library. However, since I have updated to itunes 7, I can no longer see my ipod library on itunes, instead I only see the summary of my ipod. How can I manually update the ipod?

Next to the iPod (on the left) there should be a little disclosure triangle.
Click on it so that it points down.
Underneath your ipod you should now see the word "music". Click on that.
Now do you see the songs on your iPod?

  • Manually updating iPod on seperate comp

Question, can I update my iPod with songs on a comp that is not my home one? I selected 'Manual Update', but if it'll still delete my songs that aren't in the Library, I don't wanna do anything. If the songs get deleted, I'll be in big trouble, cause I'm far away from home, and I still have a month left til I get back. I'm guessing that 'Manual Update' won't affect any of my current songs, but I just want some assurance.
    Thanks -

as long it is in manual update mode before you plug it in, you will be fine. it will not delete any of your songs if it is in manual. you will be able to drag and drop files into your ipod without any problems.

  • Manually updating iPod - Does it update star ratings as well?

I just bought a brand new 5G iPod, and decided to manually update it. So I have to click and drag songs to it. My question is when I connect the iPod, will iTunes automatically update any play counts / star ratings I've added to songs on my iPod, or do I have to do something special in order for those to transfer?

when I connect the iPod, will iTunes automatically update any play counts / star ratings I've added to songs on my iPod
No, it won't.... not if you're using manual updates.
This only works if you are automatically updating your iPod.

  • Manually Updating iPod on two versions of i tunes

I use i-Tunes 7 in work and an earlier version at home. Since updating my iPod manually in work I have been unable to drag any music on to my iPod at home. The music is from my own CD collection so it is not purchased and both versions are set to manually update. When I try and drag the folder I get a circle with a line through it as if this is not allowed. Is this because i have an earlier version at home? Is there any way around this as i dont have an internet connection at home.

as long it is in manual update mode before you plug it in, you will be fine. it will not delete any of your songs if it is in manual. you will be able to drag and drop files into your ipod without any problems.

  • Problem Solved : Manually updating iPod

    AH HA!
For all of you with this problem, you likely have Windows XP... its very simple, scroll down when you are at your iPod section (in the left side) and bob's your uncle...
maybe im late for this and look like a fool... you decide

The Itunes will only read my ipod once after restarting it, but it wont update it unless you format it. After that it refuses to sync saying the required folder doesnt exist. After i disconnect adn reconnect it doesnt show up.

  • Cannot delete songs from iPod when in manual update mode

    Hi
I am using iTunes 7 and i'm trying to delete some songs just from my iPod and i have always used the manual update option.
The problem is when i go into the songs on my iPod and go into a playlist and try to delete the songs within a playlist it won't let me. BUT when i search for those same songs within my iPod library (library shows all songs on the iPod) i can delete them.
So my problem is i cannot delete songs within playlists just from my iPod. I know that deleting the playlist on the left hand side navigation bar will still keep the songs there, it will only delete the actual playlist.
Also when i select a song(s) the edit menu is all greyed out except for copy.
    Can anyone help please.

Try using the key combination Shift-Delete when deleting from a song from a playlist, this will delete it from the library as well.

  • Using a second computer with an ipod set to manual update

I want to prevent my ipod 60GB video which is set to manual update on my G5 from being updated when I plug it into my powerbook. The powerbook assumes the ipod is available for auto update. How do I mount the iPod without iTunes automatically replacing its contents. I can't "preset" iTunes in its preferences to treat the iPod as a manual drive as it just says: "no iPod connected. As soon as I attach the iPod the auto update starts. Are there keystrokes to interrupt the update so I can set the iPod preferences on my Powerbook?
    Thanks

Hold down the ⌥ and ⌘ keys while connecting your iPod. Keep them down until iTunes has opened and your iPod shows in the Source list.

  • How do I set iTunes to manually update songs without connecting iPod first?

Hi. I just got a new computer and downloaded iTunes. The User Guide says that when you connect the iPod, iTunes automatically updates all songs in your iTunes and deletes songs that are not in iTunes. As far as I can see by reading the User's Guide, iPod has to be connected to change the setting to "manual update". I already have an iPod with songs in it that are not on the iTunes that I just downloaded. I'm afraid that if I connect my iPod, it will erase the songs already in my iPod because of the default "automatic update" setting. Does anyone know how I can change the setting to "manual update" BEFORE I connect the iPod to the computer?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Sync Play count between iPod & iTunes when manually update selected

    Hello,
I use manual updating on iTunes simply because I have so much music, it wont fit onto my iPod, so I manually select the songs I want on.
I have been reading and find that doing this stops the iPod and iTunes from updating the Play count and Last played. Doesnt this sound a bit daft?
People have played suggestions such as creating certain playlists that are automatically synced with the iPod, but my songs are all in playlists.
Is there any addon or way that you can get the iPod and iTunes to automatically sync that part so it updates? Without turning on automatic syncing?
    Thanks

Playcounts only sync if you are syncing. They don't if you're manually managing your music. Sorry.

  • Manual update - how do I add album art to songs that are already in ipod?

I recently changed to manual update as the auto update started to take a ridiculously long time to even recognize my 60gb.
I wanted to add album art to an album that was already in my ipod. I updated the songs in itunes, and then dragged them to the ipod when it was listed in itunes.
Itunes said "updating songs" - and I ended up with two copies of each song.
I deleted the duplicates from the ipod, but surely there must be an easier way.
So how does one properly update information on existing songs with manual update?
    60gb video     latest itunes

The easiest way to do this kind of thing probably would be to either make the alterations (album artwork, lyrics, etc.) on your iPod's songs themselves, not the iTunes library songs. (Click on the little arrow to the left of your iPod's name in the Source List of iTunes, so show/hide. Click on the "Music" library under your iPod to see it's songs displayed in iTunes.)
When you've gotten in the "Music" library, under your iPod's name in iTunes, you can select the songs here that you want to change, and click on "Get Info".
    Or, you could do this:
1 - Make the changes to the iTunes Library songs.
2 - Go to your iPod's Music area in iTunes.
3 - Delete the current songs off your iPod that will be replaced with the "modified" version of the track (that has additional or altered info on it.)
4 - Now, go back to the iTunes Library. Select those new changed songs, and drag them to your iPod.

  • Updating Ipod manually

OK, I have a home computer and work computer and have a library on each computer because I upload music in both places. I want to put all of the songs on one of the libraries on my Ipod without deleting the current music contents of the Ipod. I believe the way to do this is to set the setting on the Ipod to update manually. Can someone please tell me how to highlight and "drag" the entire contents of a library onto the Ipod so it will manually update all at once?
    Thanks so much.

I would suggest you to do in this way, using your iPod as a media.
First update your iPod with your home computer, then your iPod would carry the home's library, download a 3rd party software e.g. YamiPod and install on your work computer
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=701401&tstart=0
Connect your iPod with your work computer, then use this software to copy the songs from your iPod (home's library) to the iTunes on your work computer. Once completed, your iTunes on your work computer should have the home+work libraries. So do the update between your work computer with your iPod.
You will be a happy man
