Manually using TM

looked for a definitive answer after looking through many posts and no luck.
a couple of simple questions...
i just got a 1tb ext. drive and did the TM back-up.
now it does a back-up every hour etc.
after the initial back-up can i just turn it off (TM) and whenever i want turn it on to do a back-up?
will it do an entire new back-up or will it do just for the stuff that has changed?
when i do have it off, can i at that point unmount/eject my ext. drive and shut it off? than of course turn it on when TMing again.
i know it's a bit basic but just want too MAKE sure i do it right.

i am in the process of putting all my dvds onto appletv.
it creates files that are all big and i just want to save the final version of each movie when i am done.
so i would convert we'll say 6 movies than delete the MTR version(and if it was a bad conversion) the main file, turn on TM it would save what is the good version...you get the point.
i just don't want too save wasted stuff especially when they range from 3 to 7 gigs each.

Thanks, but no dice. When I check Maunal manage, I get the dialog about erasing the phone and syncing to this computer. The only thing I can think of is to make sure my home machine is also set to manual sync. Although, I was able to manual sync just fine until I upgraded itunes to 11.0.1

Manual use of effects/transitions from themes...

I am new to PE, just installed PE10 yesterday... I wish to use the effects/transitions that are in the instant movie (themes) manually, but they are not provided as choices from the effects/transition menus. Is there any way to use them? The instant movie feature doesn't allow for the video editing I require. Thanks.*

As Bill said there is this facility called 'Break Apart Instant Movie' in the right click menu on Instant movie, which breaks apart the Instant movie into its components. You can do editing on these parts.
And the effects/transitions used in Instant movie are very well present in the effects/tarnsitions menus. All effects/transitions/titles used in Instant Movies are present there.
And if you want to know what effects/transition was applied in Instant Movie, you can Break Apart it. In the broken components, select the clip whose/effect/transition you want to know and click on Properties button(which is below the monitor).
It will give you the name of effect/transition used.

Managing iPod audio content *manually*, using the Finder?

Note: I realize that this topic has been extensively discussed in certain Usenet newsgroups recently; but I still haven't found a satisfactory answer there, so I'm asking here.
I have a collection of a few hundred audio files in iPod-playable formats -- lectures and seminars, actually; not "songs" -- which I would like to load into an iPod nano and listen to, with the following constraints:
--I want to be able to organize these files into a hierarchical folder structure of my choosing, located on my HD at a location of my choice, using only the Finder to do this organizing (and from time to time re-organize and re-name these audio files).
--I then want to dump the latest version of this entire structure onto an iPod nano, and be able to navigate to and listen to these audio files one at a time, using my file and folder names as the structure for this navigating.
This particular iPod does NOT need to contain any additional iTunes content or any other iPod/iTunes capabilities (music, video, whatever) if that simplifies things; and I don't mind having to go a few iTunes steps to accomplish this result, except that:
* NO duplicates of my primary files are to be created anywhere else on my HD, in some "iTunes Music Library" or the like; only my master files are to be used; and
* NO additional messing around on my part creating "playlists" or typing individual file names into some iTunes window or anything of that sort is to be required to accomplish this; my Finder-created folder and file names are to determine what shows up on the iPod screen after the files are dumped to it, and I should be able to navigate through the downloaded audio files and play them using those names only.
Can this (or anything approaching it) be done with a Mac and an iPod?
(And if not, any suggestions for some other Mac-compatible MP3 player that will do this?)

Creating Training manuals using FM with multiple SME's authoring

Greetings from Norway!
I am currently considering switching from an InDesign/InCopy workflow over to TC2. Our manuals are heavily dependent on SME input and participation, in fact they write a good deal along with the tech writers.
Is is possible to have SME contribution using Frame if only the techwriters actually have Frame on their workstations? I have read alot and see that if you use WebDAV you can save the Frame file as a .xml file. Can the SME's write content in an xml format and then have the tech writers import it into the long document in Frame? If my SME's want to write a new chapter outline for me to follow, is this possible with WebDAV?
To get 2 licenses in Norway is going to cost us $4,500, so I want to make sure that I can still have the SME input without any problems. We have been using InCopy for this purpose, but are having too many little problems and I would like to move towards Frame.
ANY input on working with Frame with multiple authors, some of which are not using Frame on their workstations, would be greatly appreciated!

If you're currently outputting your manuals from InDesign - whether to paper or PDF - there's probably no immediate or compelling need to convert to FrameMaker.
You'll have the same problems with SMEs maintaining strict style usage, whether in InCopy or Word for import into InDesign or FrameMaker, and you'll have the same problems with SMEs working in FrameMaker directly, even if your company should win a FrameMaker site license in a lottery.
Even in departments whose members are experienced technical writers, maintaining rigorous style requirements isn't automatic or easy.
One key reason to consider the Technical Communications Suite is its ability to create help systems. A related reason is its ability to create single-source material for reuse and/or multiple outputs; FrameMaker can work with content management systems, XML, and DITA. All of these are not trivial to implement.
RoboHelp can work with Word files, if help systems ability is important to you. FrameMaker wouldn't be necessary.
Though InDesign can work with XML, it currently isn't suited to the kind of XML authoring that FrameMaker is. It's not easy to author for XML in InDesign or InCopy, as it is in FrameMaker, and even in FrameMaker, it's not without problems. InDesign can't do DITA.
It might be worthwhile to create a small-scale trial in which your SMEs work in Word or InCopy, or some other application whose output maintains style names. Import that material into you InDesign templates, then analyze the problems.
One major problem will undoubtedly be inconsistent tagging of material with proper styles. A close second will be attempts by the users to apply custom formatting (overrides) to the content, rather than using styles. Other problems include inconsistent use of lists of items, and inclusion of items in running text.
If you can define a simple set of styles and requirements that the SMEs agree to follow, importing their material to any style-conscious application will require less manual effort.
If the SMEs will need to revise material that the technical writers send back, you'll want to experiment with round-tripping from your publishing application via RTF or Word file format and reimporting from whatever editing application the SMEs use. If SMEs will agree to edit in Acrobat, this is one way to avoid the inevitable round-tripping artifacts, though it requires manual attention from the technical writers.
Using a single-flow layout - "single story" in InDesign terms, "single text flow" in FrameMaker terms, rather than the kind of discontinuous graphic-designer's visual layout of pasted page objects and separate stories, will make it easier to reflow revised content. This is the usual way that FrameMaker users work. InDesign's improved long-document tools make it possible to work the same way.

How do I add a signature manually using Ctrl + another key?

I had programmed the Ctrl + S key so that I could manually add a signature. I upgraded to the new version of the software and it no longer works. Any suggestions?

Manually using itunes with 2nd computer

so i have my ipod all ready but when i want to put a song on it from my other computer, how do i do it? i've set it to manual so it doesnt delete the other stuff but how do i actually get the music on there?

Within iTunes.
Once the iPod is docked, since you've set it to manually manage your iPod's content, under the iPod in the 'Sources' panel, click the currently right-facing arrow. Simply drag tracks between the Music area of your Library and the Music tab under the iPod.

Sending mails manually using Tcode SOST

I am using Zprogram to send email to receivers in which i have used FM 'SO_NEW_DOCUMENT_SEND_API1' . Now the new requirement is to stop the mails sending automatically.
is it possible to adjust the program in a way that when executing the programme , the mailing is only prepared and eMail will only be sent via the TCode SOST?

Hello,
I don't think there's any good way to do this.
If you want to hold all emails from certain users you could try using CDG routing (note 311633) to assign their emails to a node that you leave turned off until you've checked the queue... But that only works if you want to stop all mail from that sender.
Or you could change to using a MAIL printer (device type M) and uncheck the print immediately so the email shows up in their print spool and needs to be triggered before being sent.

Monitoring manually using scripts/sql cmds to find the recent changes on Oracle Database

Hello All,
I have an Oracle database running on HP Open VMS Alpha server, need to monitor the actvities and changes made to the database.
I am not sure of any tools which supports HP Open VMS alpha server, Can you help with the scripts or commands to findout recent changes occured on the database.
I found suddenly a couple of schema sizes showing very less in size than usaul, how to find out the recent changes.

Exactly what do you mean by "schema sizes showing very less in size than usual"? Schemas don't have sizes. Only segments.
Perhaps if you were more explicit in exactly what problem you are trying to solve, we could give better advice, but whatever it is, I seriously doubt that the solution will be OS-specific.

What is the best program to use to make Technical Manuals?

I am trying to create a technical manual using ibooks author. I am require the manual to have certain sections.
1. a table of contents that auto adjusts to the titles
2. a list of Effective Pages with page numbers and revision numbers
3. a record of revisions
4. content.
Does anyone know if this is possible with ibooks author or with any other program available for MAC?

Again, iBA doesn't provide change controls for revision tracking - that would be up to you to manage manually. Did you look at Doxygen yet?

workflow . However, if an ad hoc approver is required, a business workflow is required to cater for the process
step. Please use a workaround by creating an own process schema for automatic approval if you want to
allow ad hoc approvers on this case.

Exporting the Browse Sequence XML file for Use in Another Project

When I generate a browse sequence based on the TOC using zero for the book level, instead of getting A, A1, A2, B, B1, B2, I get A, B, A1, A2, B1, B2. The TOC runs through all 1st level items first, cycles back through all 2nd level item, then 3rd level, etc.
My workaround was to auto-create the browse sequence at a 0 level and then manually manipulate it to output according to how my readers would actually read my online book (ie A Aa A1 A1a A1b A2 A2a A2b B B1 etc etc).
Now that I have my browse sequence in the correct order for this project, I do not want to repeat these steps every time I create a new version of my OLH for the same guide after some minor updates have been made to the FM source.
There is a file named whbrs.xml inside the output folder and it contains the browse sequence order I specified during my workaround steps.
Is it possible to export this file to another location for use in another project referencing the same guide?
This methodology is much preferred as I am working at an enterprise level with multiple documents (some numbering in the hundreds of pages) and do not want to have to manually use my workaround for each project I update over the next few years.

You probably wouldn't want to use that particular file as it's an output file. You would likely have better luck using the ProjectName.BRS file as that one should be a source file.
However, keep in mind that whether (or how well) this will work will entirely depend on having the recipient project using the same identical structure and identical file names.
